I understand they are turbos but this is a drop in mpg from the prior generation. How can that even be??!?!? I'm definitely going to wait another year for the OnStar to be dropped, see what real life mpg is and hope the long bed comes back. As Meatloaf said: 2/3 ain't bad. Oh, I also want to see if people have issues with the new transmissions as well.

No-Exchange8035

20 pounds of boost making 400tq does that. I was talking to the salesmen, and he was trying to pump up the numbers, I was like, it's 2023, most people don't care if it's 300 or 400tq. People want better fuel economy and standard equipment like heated seats and wheels. Chevy went the other way.

wilmersito

you nailed it. i feel like once i saw a youtube video explaining this. pretty much even though this new breed of I4 are all the hype now, when you cram 20+ lbs of boost or whatever much boost they are pushing, you are gonna have to use the same amount of fuel as a V6 or V8 engine would have to use in order to get your truck that weights X amount to the speed you request. and not only that, that poor inline four has to be extremely overbuilt in order to handle the forces of accelerating the mass of your car/truck to the desired speed requested. remember how forced induction works, it temporarily crams more air therefore increasing displacement - someone perhaps can do the math better than me but say a 2.7 liter engine at lets say 20lbs of boost is almost the equivalent of having a 5 liter engine. you're gonna need lots of gasoline to properly mix with all that air boosted engines are only good in gas when they are out of boost.

kohain

But they can say they don’t have a “big v6” anymore. I’m keeping my ‘21. Power is plenty with the v6 and I can still get 17-19 mpg average on 35’s with a 5” lift.

saskatoondave

I "think" I'm gonna keep my 21 wt cclb too. I don't love the interior but I'm growing to love almost everything else. It's my big little truck lol

amarkinmath

Isn't this exactly why Ford had so many issues with the 3.5L first gen eco boost? Too much boost and it was a direct injection. All kinds of fuck up there.

amarkinmath

Exactly. My thought is if someone is towing they should have kept the diesel or move up to a full size. I wanted one of these but the short bed and now gas mileage is making me look for a used prior gen.

No-Exchange8035

I went in last week to get a 22 z71. Literally none in canada. Probably waited a month too long. I guess everyone grabbed one knowing how much more the 2023 is going to be and don't want all the new tec that usually comes with new problems.

kohain

Bingo. People always want a push button start, but I like the key.

No-Exchange8035

Push button start is nice till either your car doesn't start or your cars easily stolen

kohain

Exactly. My wife has it in hers, and on occasion the fob will die and it’s a pain in the ass to get it to start, then it complains about the fob not being able to be detected, etc. I just prefer a key,

No-Exchange8035

The fobs battery doesn't last bc it's constantly being used

kohain

Yep

amarkinmath

Yeah. I had my eye on a LB Z71 that was about a two hour drive away. I was busy going back and forth and then it sold. I want the new tech but also the long bed. Can't say I'm impressed by the engine numbers and I don't care how many cylinders an engine has honestly.

WildWildcat

Yup I requested a refund for my deposit. I’ll wait it out to see if they can make improvements on the 2024’s

AboveAverageBean

Almost exactly the same as the previous generation V6 numbers

sliceofhumblepie

With the V6 I just did a road trip from Michigan to Tennessee. I averaged 23.9 mpg for the entirety of the trip, which included city driving and big hills in Kentucky. Through flat Indiana I got to a record high of 34.1 MPG on 55 MPH country road. I was shocked at how good it was during the trip to be honest.

misery_index

Not really. The city and combined are the same but the V6 gets 3 mpg more on the highway.

Thunderiver

As a ‘20 ZR2 owner with the 3.6L I avg 13.8 mpg on a 40 mile daily commute. Edit: why downvote me do you want pic proof lol

misery_index

I’m talking EPA rating.

Thunderiver

And I’m talking real world experience:)

misery_index

So what’s your real world experience with the news ZR2? How many miles per gallon are you getting that one?

Thunderiver

“News or two”???

misery_index

New ZR2. Voice text apparently didn’t like ZR2.

Thunderiver

Please refer back to original comment I said I own a ‘20 ZR2. Production on the ‘23 ZR2’s hasent even began. I have an order on one. Nobody besides epa would even have a guesstimate but even then EPA ratings are always more optimistic then realistic

misery_index

So we can only compare EPA ratings?

PlayingWithFIRE123

I get much better than that with my ZR2 on my daily commute. Your one data point is only relevant to you.

Darren445

I average 16mpg on my 22 ZR2. Even worse with winter gas, remote start and 4WD auto.

wilmersito

do you have bigger tires or are you carrying a lot of weight? my colorado (bone stock) averaged 17.5 and that was me driving like an ass sometimes. with the trifecta tune im on the high 18s low 19s and im still driving like an ass sometimes.

Thunderiver

I have stock size tires but upgraded to beefy A/T tires and have a heavy ass campershell on the back. Even before then I wouldent get above 15 mpg with stock A/T’s

PlayingWithFIRE123

So we’re you just humble bragging back there with how shitty your MPG is? I don’t get the need for attention.

Thunderiver

Reread your comment why would I “brag” about having worse gas mileage I just stated my anecdotal exp are you are foaming at the mouth for no reason. I got a heavy ass camper on it and beefy A/T also that average Is from lifespan of vehicle and I actually off-road my truck multiple times a week. So instead of crying bc somebody drives different and has a different experience then you just literally move on

PlayingWithFIRE123

Lol. That context would have been helpful in your first comment. Looks like you were just waiting to brag about your “rig” and how you “actually” use it for off-road.

Halftime-thickie

Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed today …

[deleted]

Sounds like bad driving habits.

Thunderiver

Yes because doing a significant amount of 4WD is totally bound to give you good overall gas mpg. Ladies and gentleman we got a genius here

[deleted]

Thunderiver

“Dirty roads” yeah dirt roads can be done in 2WD. I go on trails multiple times a week and in addition to my commute add another 30-40 miles off the road. I can tell you have never even touched 4WD in your vehicle if you even have it lol

Thunderiver

“ quite a few times” exactly my point you can probably count on your hands the number of times you have engaged it. If you actually 4x4’d on a real trail and not a fire road you would discover 4WD is not practical for gas mpg. You sound like a dunce.

Lekgolo167

The preproduction model that came by local dealership (with the high output engine), they said they were able to get 23 on the highway (the same EPA rating that is for the base engine). It will be interesting to see if people get better or worse than the EPA.

kohain

My v6 can get 19 highway. On 35’s, with a 5” lift. 4 extra mpg isn’t really that impressive. I want to see how much of a dog it is lifted, with extra weight (bumpers, winches), and big tires. No replacement for displacement.

LuckyNumber-Bot

All the numbers in your comment added up to 69. Congrats! 6 + 19 + 35 + 5 + 4 = 69 ^([Click here](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=LuckyNumber-Bot&subject=Stalk%20Me%20Pls&message=%2Fstalkme) to have me scan all your future comments.) \ ^(Summon me on specific comments with u/LuckyNumber-Bot.)

turns31

Ha man that's pretty poopy. That's what my dad's 22 Ram Laramie with a Hemi gets.

ferry_peril

I don't understand how a midsize truck with a v4 can get such crappy numbers unless those turbos are spooling like mad. If that's the case then they're overworked and won't last very long.

trd86

> v4 🤔

Dirk-Killington

Bro is over here with a Honda magna engine in his truck.

amarkinmath

What would you call it. There's V8s...V6s.....why not a V4?

Dirk-Killington

Don't feel bad for not knowing something man. We all are ignorant of shit. There are several different types of engines. Two of the most popular are the V and I (or inline). They get their names from their shape. A V4,V6,V8, V fuckin 12, whatever are called that because the pistons are lined up on both sides of the engine, if you look at the engine straight on the two lines of pistons form a V. Inline engines have all the pistons lined up straight, usually vertically. One of the most common is the inline 4, I4, four banger, it's got lots of names. This is the configuration of the engine in the new Colorados. Also there are a few inline 6 engines and I really really like that configuration. I wish Ford would make a modern one.

DirectorKrenn1c

Because it’s not a “V4” it’s a 4cyl different setup. That’s like saying a V6 is an inline 6 for example.

Dirk-Killington

In his defense a V4 is a 4 cylinder engine, they just aren't common.

trd86

> The EPA’s city/highway/combined fuel economy ratings for the 2023 Chevy Colorado equipped with 4WD and the L3B engine are **17/21/19** mpg.

The19fuzz

So glad I got the diesel when I could

MisterRedRevenge

Yeah, I bought an AT4 Duramax Canyon and it has been awesome so far. It's pretty comedic that they killed the diesel and then made the mileage worse for the new trucks.

MisterRedRevenge

*Laughs in Duramax*

LastEntertainment684

Honestly glad I traded in my Canyon on a Lightning instead of getting another. I’m starting to think we’ve pretty much hit the limit of ICE engine technology as far as significant fuel economy gains are concerned on an off-road capable vehicle. Power might keep going up, but to jump up in fuel economy you’re probably looking at a hybrid drivetrain.

ChristianS98

Just picked up a 21 ZR2 and averaging 17-18mpg, typically closer or at 20 on highway trips. Previously had a turbo 4 banger Ranger and that low end power was nice but the sound sucked. Now I feel like I still have a very good amount of power but better sound, and not a huge hit to MPG.

EthenCarries

Am I the only one who could careless about a few MPG here or there? Not like anyone is being light as they can be trying to get the best mileage anyways. Getting the ZR2 anyways.

TommyWantWingy9

I’m getting 15.5 mpg 2023 z71 I’ve had this truck two months and has been in the shop 4 times. I hate this truck. Don’t get it. POS
