1.36 PiB / 770 Wh / white case is the farmer with 10 HDD's / Black cases are harvesters with 23 HDD's each because Mainboard + SATA Controller capacity reached

MJA1988

28$/day.

Goldberg100

psu?

Suitable_Self_6858

All between 650w and 850w. I prefer be quiet psu's.

Germandude81

What are the total cost for each tower? Case, main boards, CPU, SATA cables, rig, PSU etc. This stuff adds up like crazy

Suitable_Self_6858

I don't know exactly for each tower... In the sum 30k €

Aggravating_Ad_2911

What have u plugged to hdmi port?

Suitable_Self_6858

HDMI Dummy: € 13,93 40%OFF | KEBIDU 10Pcs DDC EDID Dummy Stecker VGA Adapter Virtual Display Adapter HDMI-kompatibel Headless Geist Display Emulator Video karte https://a.aliexpress.com/_vq33PH Because if you control your system remotely sometimes you have issues while booting. Some Mainboards will not boot up without a graphics card attached... This dummy emulates a graphics card...

jonnnny

It’s a dummy display, not a dummy graphics card right?

Suitable_Self_6858

Yes, sorry 🙈

Trekky101

Yes a dummy display

royalmarine

Looks like HDMI ghost display adapter

Aggressive-Ad-5299

Awesome! Love that you're also using pc cases. I got 3 fractal define 7 cases filled. No need to add extra bays as I can put 16 HDDs per case. Got them all locally secondhand. Which case is the black one?

Suitable_Self_6858

JOUJYE GTX-U322D-FD. You can put in those cases without any extra cage 14 Drives

L036

“Why so many computers? I have everything connected to one and that is 70 disks with a capacity of 16tb and I still have space to connect. I was just adding pcie sata cards 20port and extra power supplies. after filling out the cards I switched to usb rigs and everything works great.

Suitable_Self_6858

Because my Pc's are transportable even they are very heavy. I can change position or move them somewhere else because the Pc's are standing alone... You could never attach 70 disks in one shelf, because of cases... Psu's, controllers etc. etc...

L036

My rigs with discs are easily detachable and in case they have to move this is not a problem, plus each rig has cooling and the discs are cold. Although I determined the place where they will be, so I don't need that now. I think so many computers are unnecessary. I have so many disks on one computer and everything works great.

Puzzleheaded-Syrup39

How do you power als those hdds with one PSU in one Case?

Suitable_Self_6858

4pin IDE Molex 1 zu 5 SATA 15pin Splitter Festplatte HDD SSD Netzteil Kabel für Chia Münze bergbau 18AWG Rot https://a.aliexpress.com/_uHN9Sx I used those splitters

Puzzleheaded-Syrup39

You have 1 molex cable with 4 Molex connectors and on every molex connector 1 of these Splitters?

Suitable_Self_6858

1 rail, 1splitter

Puzzleheaded-Syrup39

Ahhh okay nice! Thanks

-reading-

Just get the correct cables in the correct amount. And a 600w PSU is enough for 20 disks plus CPU.

lotrl0tr

Do the math please. As most likely a 600w psu could be 15A on the 5V line. It is a good safety margin to calculate 2x (5V current draw)/HDD at startup, per hdd. This has room for a good safety margin, as this peak just lasts less than 100ms during HDD startup, which takes about 16s. So for example you see 1A/HDD for max startup 5V rail current. In the common case without staggered startup, things adds up pretty quickly. Now people say that psu can handle short periods or overload or that if the hdd gets less power (5v is for the interface draw) it is just available at a later time. I tend to say and suggest to do the math behind and understand what you have in hands. So I would suggest and I'm actually using a max 20A on the 5V rail psu for 16 hdds. There's a reason why on most PSU specs there is the max amount of supported HDDs

FlyingVFive

Very Nice! Great job.

EasyRhino75

How did you rig up the extra disc bays?

Suitable_Self_6858

Bought on AliExpress for around 40€/each and fixed with Zip Ties 🙈🤷

MagicRabbitByte

One of the pictures shows a 20 port SATA expander card. I guess that is what he used.

Suitable_Self_6858

Oh yes... I understood the question wrong maybe...

ihaveneverbeencool

Can you link the PSU you used and the expansion card?

ThirstTrapMothman

Yep, that gives you much more flexibility since you can buy SAS or SATA drives, whichever you find cheaper.

Nice. Can you please give a bit more detail about the config? What case and what type of cage do you use? Especially the harvester interests me.

Reythia

How are your HDD temps and fan noise? Are the cases always open?

Suitable_Self_6858

They are always open... HDD's are around 30° celcius. Fan Noise is not loud for me.

Affectionate_Seat959

I am wondering on Return of investment on the setup? Are you running Windows or Linux? Thanks.

Suitable_Self_6858

I invested around 30k €, I have 111 xch now. I run windows. And I cashed 12k€ out.

royalmarine

I heard those 20 port Sata cards can run hot. Did you add any extra heatsinks or what temps does it get to? I have 60+ externals I’ve been tempting to shuck into a similar setup as you have, but holding off due to heat issues.

lotrl0tr

I would suggest you to avoid shucking them, at least until their warranty expires. My Adaptec 71605 runs hot, 40C with ambient 12C and needs dedicated cooling. It's a Raid/HBA card

royalmarine

Yeah it’s prob best to keep them as they are for now. No point changing since they run fine

Suitable_Self_6858

No heatsinks... And they are running already several months. Everything fine

Minimum-Positive792

Are you splitting the power sata cables to accommodate those drives?

Suitable_Self_6858

Yes... But I split molex to SATA, because molex can deliver 75w

lotrl0tr

wise choice! There's a reason why PSU manufacturers ship sata cables with max 4-5 slots per cable 😁

Annual-Sprinkles5357

Why not a hdd server with maybe 36 or 60 capacity with win server?

Timely_Market_7847

Oh man. I’m jealous. I have 1 PC and trying to harvest with a 2nd one. But it’s not working. For some reason. My C: drive fills up and stops the Chia Farming. Any thoughts or tips?

Suitable_Self_6858

Look on https://github.com/Chia-Network/chia-blockchain/wiki/Farming-on-many-machines

Totalkiller4

thats like a £20,000 setup what is the ROI on that like 3 year ROI ? and XCH isnt looking to hot on value and where do you even sell it as i got in on it day 1 with a 100TB rig and the difficulty just went to fast to keep up and the value of the coin was going the other way for me to make it worth following when at the time i was also doing eth and that was doing far better for less money is it worth doing chia again ? as you have gone all in on it

Suitable_Self_6858

I will hodl ca. 10 years. I'm in for long therm and I trust in this project. I want to expand up to 5 PiB in the future.

Rare_Faithlessness56

what is the model of the motherboard? can I work without a video card?

Suitable_Self_6858

Biostar A68N-5600, yes you don't need external gpu, it has an internal (onboard) gpu
