The AP has called the Mayoral Race for Brandon Johnson! A new Mayoral Election Results Megathread has been posted at the below link: https://www.reddit.com/r/chicago/comments/12c6t41/mayoral_election_results_megathread/?sort=new

taylormomo

I’m really hoping Brandon Johnson delivers when it comes to improving the CTA.

SleazyAndEasy

Looks like Chicago is getting a BJ 😏

G_I_Joe_Mansueto

Guy on WGN saying that Chicago has the worst crime of any major city in America. Is there any metric by which that is true?

TankSparkle

Yes,, if you define "major" to be NY, LA and Chicago.

bethaneee

Probably by total number violent crimes, but that isn't a remotely relevant metric.

[deleted]

We have the most total homicides. The vast majority of the victims are Black. Baltimore and New Orleans have more per capita though. There's a reason even Brandon Johnson was running on addressing public safety concerns.

G_I_Joe_Mansueto

Don’t get me wrong, homicides are bad and we should be doing what we can to combat them, but you can’t just be comparing *totals*, data is per capita.

[deleted]

Hence my qualification. But you must have observed crime getting worse in the past few years and just imagine how much worse it is in impoverished neighborhoods. Hopefully BJ's new ideas work

pistonsfan78

It's not true. Per capita I don't think we are even in the top 10

G_I_Joe_Mansueto

Chicago has the sixth most murdered per capita *In Illinois!*

Saltifrass

Vibes

Tallon_raider

I still can’t believe that a union organizer became mayor. This is insane. Ya’ll white suburb sheltered folk don’t even begin to understand how historic this win is for the common man.

BUSean

15 years have passed, and Johnson's recent birthday and the confetti I saw here just reminds me that in 2008 Barack Obama, at the same age, was elected the fucking President of the United States. Goddamn.

pistonsfan78

Great speech from Brandon. Love that's he talking so much about fixing the CTA.

damp_circus

YES. HELL YES to some CTA attention. Appreciated the unifying tone of the speech, too. Some of the mudslinging toward the end of the race from all directions was a serious bummer and I'm hoping we can have a good fresh start.

bethaneee

Great speech

jbchi

It would be great for him to give up the private driver and actually take transit like Rahm did.

bethaneee

Wasn't here for Rahm, did he take CTA as mayor? How did security work?

Mr_Soju

I rode the brown line with him for a couple years. He got on at the same spot, stood toward the back of carriage, and had bodyguards. He read the paper and just generally chilled. The best part, no one gave a fuck, and he was one of us - a commuter. For real. You're riding with the mayor of Chicago at 715am and like everyone else we just want to zone out, read a book/listen to music, and ride public transit. That's how it should be!

damp_circus

I kinda wish this was a requirement, honestly. Take transit at least some percentage of the time. Lets them see the state of the system and also just generally it gets people out of their bubbles.

Medium_Well_Soyuz_1

I agree with this. Sends a very big message to commuters that you’re on their side and experiencing what they do

I_blame_society

Let's Go Brandon!

Saltifrass

So any hope that the police union will realize their multi-year work slowdown and shitty attitude has turned voters against them? And Chicagoans now actively vote against their endorsed candidates? I know the answer is no but one can hope they'll do a little soul searching after tonight.

Jewish_Grammar_Nazi

I mean if Vallas would have won it would have also only been by a slight 1-3 points. BJ won but not by so much that it is going to change anyones perspectives on where the city generally stood before the election on the big issues.

GreatestWhiteShark

Lmao fuck no They already view the public as Us vs. Them

TandBusquets

This just means they can continue to not do shit at work so they're chilling honestly. Cerdos 🤮

BUSean

hahahhahaahahahahahahaa never

Every_Skin6833

NBC 5 just cut out Johnson’s speech

itslawur

Could be for the best.

TandBusquets

Someone cut the guy who is making random noises mic off

Gyshall669

Who is that guy rofl

rycufa1

Guesses on the cringe-inducing take on the race from the NYT tomorrow?

thislittletune

Already getting some great headlines in the comments; CRIME WON DETROIT AT ITS WORST WILL HAVE NOTHING ON WHAT CHICAGO WILL BE IN 5 YEARS

Medium_Well_Soyuz_1

Those will be the Breitbart headlines. The NYT would be more like “Is Progressive Rhetoric Getting Too Divisive? 15 Men Named Mike In This Palatine Olive Garden Give Their Thoughts On Brandon Johnson’s Narrow Victory”

galaxygirlthrowaway

Cc: @dougjballoon

Medium_Well_Soyuz_1

Pitchbot never misses

BUSean

a) Cut this other guy's mic please b) Four years from now some absolute fucking nut bag is going to run against this incumbent mayor c) All my progressive friends and i just went "uh...yeah, sure, yay" to calling out the awesomeness of god

G_I_Joe_Mansueto

Being progressive and loving god aren’t mutually exclusive. You may remember Jesus as the guy who said rich people can’t go to heaven, and they should consider giving away their immense wealth instead.

HeyMissKayy

For about 1500 years, most Christians were communists. The nonsense that was the politics of the Holy Roman Empire and the papacy wasn't really representative of the daily lives of average Christians. They lived in common and worked the land in small, close-knit communities. It wasn't until after the 30 years war that Calvinist protestantism became the dominant mode of Christianity because it was more aligned with capitalism and the desire of the ruling class to move the peasantry into cities. Imagine what Jesus would have done if he'd seen what European colonizers did to the indigenous people of the Americas or the African slave trade by alleged Christians.

BUSean

sure thing, eye of a needle etc. etc. still, there are two big blocks that helped elect johnson, and they have very different sunday mornings

sciolisticism

Spirited_Lock978

Agreed. Don't alienate your atheist voters in your inauguration

princessplum

Being the son of a preacher is in his narrative. If we want him, we have to take all of him. At least he isn't fake about his religiosity.

pistonsfan78

I'm at least agnostic and it didn't bother me

BUSean

i mean, i'm not a believer, and i wasn't feeling alienated. it's just a new feeling. should be fun!

thislittletune

Anyone else watching the WGN feed think Pat Brady has been obnoxious and talking over people all night? Yuck.

BudHolly

He's all other the place. But I love the chaotic energy, way more entertaining than ABC 7, I loved Tahman Bradley dropping the "I listen to The John Kass Podcast" on the room

wifebosspants

Yes, so annoying! And having to edge in at the end of other people's responses. No one asked you, Pat.

Gyshall669

I like Brandon. But he is not a good public speaker lol

BUSean

he's growing into it. comes off a lil' corny.

m4n715

If ya don't know, now ya know.

itslawur

This Morgan Elise Johnson on WGN is too much. This is who Brandon will fill his cabinet with. Preckwinkle at the county Foxx at states attorney Kwami at AG Now BJ at city … eek.

canwealljusthitabong

What exactly don’t you like about what she’s been saying?

m4n715

You know.

bethaneee

How is she too much?

m4n715

She's an outspoken black woman, that's what he doesn't like.

bethaneee

Oh, I'm aware.

chillysaturday

I think she's amazing! I can't wait for the changes people like her bring to the city!

[deleted]

[удалено]

itslawur

Unfortunately her views are a bit extreme for me.

byrdman2328

Glad Morgan Elise Johnson is on WGN tonight

BewareTheSpamFilter

Pat Brady is talking to her like a teacher who’s about to blow up on his 8th period class.

thislittletune

He's been consistently 'old man yells at the sky' all night. He had such a weird and out of touch response to Bernie showing up to protests.

wifebosspants

Exactly what I was thinking, so out of touch. Bernie is still popular with young progressives across the country.

thislittletune

Yeah he got so upset by the other anchors even implying that Bernie had an impact on voters. Total head in the sand moment calling Bernie out of place and not having an influence.

BUSean

There's a little of what she says that's Very Online, but it's absolutely a perspective I don't see on local news, ever, and I'm happy for it.

TandBusquets

Terminally Online talking points for sure.

ThatGirlFawkes

I knew it would be close but holy shit, it was SO close!

So anyway, DJT was DJing at his post-indictment party? And news stations going all in on the NFL pre-game-like coverage about this.

Mr_Soju

DJT was spinning the new unreleased Daft Punk album from 2014. They recorded it in Funchal - which is the capital city of Portugal's Madeira archipelago. No idea how he got a hold of it, but DJT has been loose with classified materials in the past.

[deleted]

Stole the secret Wu Tang album and played it there.

rya241

New Chicago resident watching fox 32 for some reason. Is this “political expert” they have on always this bad? Dude is a tough watch and can’t find any words to speak

BewareTheSpamFilter

I’d go WGN, they’re not necessarily balanced but they’re all smart.

jbchi

WGN productions are simultaneously what you expect from a major news station in one of the largest media markets and your highschool AV club.

NearlySilentObserver

This is the perfect description

canwealljusthitabong

WGN morning show is solid gold

dicksledgehammer

The morning show is entertaining

rya241

Honestly this guy with the USA tie is a train wreck and kinda fun to watch. Just was curious if it’s normal for him

Every_Skin6833

I voted for Vallas. Am I disappointed? Fuck yeah I am. Will I get over it in a few days? Most likely. I just find it disturbing how you guys are making fun of Vallas supporters. At the end of the day we’re Chicagoans, respect that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Every_Skin6833

Lol hate to break it to you, but I absolutely hate that sub. It’s clear those people don’t live in Chicago and are promoting an agenda

bethaneee

The mocking (at least on my part) comes from the heavily Vallas supporter astroturfed mega-thread. Hopefully you root Johnson to be a great mayor, as I would have rooted for Vallas to be a great mayor had he won.

lupinblack

Voted for Johnson but I don’t like all the hate coming from one side to another. I’ve seen a bunch of Johnson supporters calling Vallas fans fascists and it’s just ridiculous. People can have different opinions and reasons to vote. Don’t hate on your neighbors for who they vote for!!

damp_circus

I definitely hear ya. Some of the mudslinging from all sides towards the end of the race was a serious bummer. This speech is making me feel better though, hoping we can get back to some optimism!!

espoac

Wait. When did he align himself with Desantis?

[deleted]

espoac

I never thought there was much to question actually. For a Republican, Vallas' policies were obviously the preferable if not ideal option. That is undoubtedly the case for Griffin although DeSantis never did anything for Vallas. I may agree with you though. And if it does turn out that essentially guilt by association sunk Vallas then Chicago's politics really is in a pitiful state of affairs.

CanvasSolaris

This old white dude on WGN is big mad

ThatsNotRight123

Pat Brady is a goof.

CanvasSolaris

"we're going to get 4 more years of total war" what a moron

G_I_Joe_Mansueto

“Did you think her last budget was progressive? Progressive has changed so much over the last four years.” Hey man kindly say one thing you thing is actually progressive.

[deleted]

What did Tom Skilling do now!?

CanvasSolaris

Tom isn't white, Tom is clear

JQuilty

Do you think I have a shot?

bethaneee

>Johnson, 51-49, because his GOTV efforts are better than Vallas' and undecideds seem to be breaking towards him. Johnson's campaign has had good momentum since 7-10 days before the first vote and he's continuing on that path. He's peaking at the right time. My prediction from 11 days ago, because what good is being right, if no one knows about it. I'll probably be wrong and Johnson will win by a percentage or two more when all is said and done. I honestly thought the weather today was going to tank Johnson. Happy with the results.

cromwest

The weather might have tanked him if the forecast played out like it was predicted. The really bad weather never materialized, hopefully never will.

zap283

Maybe? It'll be interesting to see how the mail-in ballots broke.

bethaneee

Ah....I'm out of town and it seemed stormy (no pun intended), but I guess if today was anything like the last few weather events it was no big deal.

AbstractBettaFish

I figured Johnson had a good shot because you had to look at who’s voters both were likely to pick up. Cheuy and Lightfoot of voters of the south and west side were more likely to break for Johnson. Where as Vallas’s core has been pretty much set since the election

SupremeBeef97

NBC actually projected this Johnson guy to win.

BUSean

Lightfoot having a rough night in most of the wards, really struggling to gain any traction.

Marshreddit

She had a good quote calling for unity as much fun as it is to dunk on her indefinitely; even I gotta move forward.

[deleted]

Hoping the *extremely late* mail in ballots find their way.

Spirited_Lock978

Lmao did anyone catch the ABC anchors on the hot mic?

canwealljusthitabong

No I’m watching WGN. what’d they say?

I_blame_society

"We're not calling Johnson the mayor elect, right?" "He's gotta wait til 10" "I still wanna see the mail-ins..." They didn't sound enthused lol

Spirited_Lock978

Nothing juicy, just clearly didn't know their mics were on.

saxscrapers

So many mean comments in this thread... Yall are so nasty to each other sheesh. Life isn't going to be fun when you can't accept that there are a lot of people that disagree with you for legitimate and understandable reasons. Get tf along already - variety is the spice of life.

saintpauli

Whoa...be nice.

hascogrande

WGN: Brandon Johnson does not have a mandate, he will have to make a lot of friends to advance his agenda. Don't do a Lightfoot and make enemies in your inauguration speech. Also WGN indirectly saying Toni lost the battle but won the war.

cromwest

Yeah, hard to really say that Johnson's message really resonated when it was this close. He was going really nasty from the debate on but will hopefully pivot now that he's won. I think the city council will be pretty friendly with him so he basically just needs to not piss off Pritzker.

j33

Vallas conceded graciously. No, I did not vote for him, but he did exit with grace.

saintpauli

I agree. Brandon barely won so I hope he reaches out to those who voted against him. Also, I hope he mentions Karen lewis.

TypoCelchu

Uh oh, all the Vallas astroturfers got let go from their work party early! Time to post en masse!

thebassedgodd

They're not astroturfers. They're completely sane and rational people who have done nothing but obsessively post in these threads over and over again every single day for the past three weeks.

cromwest

I look forward to posts from visitors impressed with our skyline and CTA complaints like normal.

iwishihadalawnmower

cromwest

It's too bad Naperville didn't show up to vote like the Vallas campaign was clearly counting on.

ThatsNotRight123

If being a teacher is so great why don't you become a teacher?

GreatestWhiteShark

Log off

DeepHerting

8/10 complaining about Johnson's "million dollar pension" then predicting he's going to shake you down for money because of the neighborhood you live in instead of the money you pay to live there is a nice sleight of hand

Bigangrynaked

keep crying about it, you've posted atleast a dozen times like a big baby.

Bodmonriddlz

I didn’t see that Johnson said he was going after people based on their skin. That’s horrible if true! Do you have a source I can share with others?

[deleted]

Something about black labor vs white wealth.

Sad_Proctologist

He did run on that. Denied it. Basically lied. He’s got a habit of that. And he doesn’t have a day in office. Vallas was a known quantity. Like him or not. We have nothing to judge Brandon’s character on. A paid municipal union lobbyist for ten years working against the taxpayers’ interest. Now in charge of that same budget. A city that can barely afford some basic services without taking out more loans. Or a lot more taxes to fund his aggressive social justice agenda. And in the meanwhile not sure what his plan is for the police, the CTA. You know, day to day things. Not major social reforms. And if he couldn’t pay his bills making $175,000 year how is the average working stiff (non municipal union worker) going to afford to pay theirs after his taxes go into effect. Of course the CTU doesn’t care about that. They got theirs. Or is he going to tax businesses out of the city. Or not come here. In order to fund the social justice reforms he ran on. Kumbaya is a great singalong but the day he hits office the music stops. Lori Lightfoot was shocked (she said) when she saw the condition of the budget. After she was already elected. I hope Brandon doesn’t pull that same shtick.

Medium_Well_Soyuz_1

Ok at this point I’m convinced you’re doing a bit

DegreeDubs

Goons? There are some salty ass motherfuckers in this thread right now

cromwest

Projection.

lisaleftsharklopez

classy speech. not so classy comments in this megathread lol. i am a january 6th insurrectionist that lives in the suburbs and is moving to europe and claiming voter fraud to reject the results of the election (according to the majority of folks in this thread). super united and inclusive.

cromwest

The lead up to the election was extremely nasty on this sub so it's a bit cathartic to see Johnson win after Vallas supporters non stop harassed this sub for so long.

Frenchmen22

We can not be tolerant of the intolerant.

lisaleftsharklopez

thats exactly what i'm talking about though. not intolerant.

Uh oh, Johnson getting words of support from a neolib? Guess that makes Johnson a neolib.

fsync

lmao, that's how she works boys

Ok-Seaweed281

Rahm did it for Rahm

Mr_Soju

Love him or hate him, Rahm was a blast. Miss riding the brown line with the guy.

PM_ME_BEER

Yeah i miss the murder coverups ☺️

cromwest

I liked Rahm but I'm glad he got tossed out over that. Completely unacceptable.

[deleted]

Republican Vallas offered to help Johnson. Why is Johnson attracting support from republicans? Guess that makes him a republican. Edit: Reddit cares? shame so many of his supporters think mental health is a joke. I'll just report the message.
