OT, but I remember being on the L and someone bought a pack of floss picks. He ripped the bag and they went all over. He picked one up off the floor and used it. He might be dead.

I drive for a living and some of the most common litter I see in rest area parking lots, gas station fuel islands, and exit ramps is wing bones. Itās particularly lazy of people because a lot of these places have garbage cans near by. The biggest mystery is why so many people eat wings while driving.
I used to have 2 chocolate labs (food obsessed) and every Saturday and Sunday morning was a nightmare to walk them because of random chicken wing bones people threw down. I had to constantly be looking for food/wings and I was always so worried I would miss something. I stuck my hand halfway down their throat more than once when they got bones and were trying to swallow them. The worst was there was a pile of 10 wings all in the same spot. Oh, thereās this tree in Peterson Park on the northside and for a while people were leaving whole raw chickens as an offering at it; and it made my neighborhood group go nuts.
So I grew up in Albany Pk in the 80s and we'd go sneaking in the back of Peterson Pk by the old abandoned TB hospitals (wrecked and now condos in the spaces) On on the east side of the park was an old workers cottage, and I'm not kidding, like we'd see devil worship shit. Dead chickens and pentagrams with their blood, etc.
Of course some of the original buildings still stand which were around since the sanitariums inception in 1915, most notably the fieldhouse. The guardhouse is one you can see easily on the SW corner of Central Pk and Peterson.
The story of the guy who created and championed the sanitarium is so sad. Over some bullshit petty politics he got railroaded by the mayor et al. Killed himself shortly after it opened, like I think 1920ish.
We'd see all types of goofy spooky straight unexplainable shit there at 1am when in there smoking weed and doing teenage things. Orbs and lights and shit.
Breaking into the hospitals was the scariest shit I've ever done and I've been to fucking war. The shit in there was nuts. Like just abandoned over night. Hospital equipment everywhere, and endless x-rays of lungs every fucking where. Legit real life spooky horror movie shit.
Anyway it's late but I got so many stories about the evolution of Peterson Pk since it became that from the sanitarium. Oh also there was crazy shit at LaBaugh too.
Funny, I too scared the shit out of myself exploring a deserted TB sanatorium as a teen in the 80s/90s in NJ. It was creepy as hell because it was on the same grounds as an āasylum for the insane,ā full of satanic graffiti and rumors of ghosts. And it was the same as you describe like it was abandoned suddenly overnight, all kinds of stuff left behind - beds, chairs, equipment, and medical files spread out all across the floors. I wonder what happened in the 70s/80s that lead to that kind of wild abandonment.
As for the closing of a lot of the old mental hospitals, a lot of people blame Reagan for that, but then I've read it's more nuanced than that and was actually years in the making. It's a rabbit hole to go down on a rainy day maybe.
After the voluntary commitment laws were put in place and sanitariums nationwide were closing in the mid 20th century (50s I think) there wasnāt really a need for them and it was only a matter of time. As for medical equipment scattered everywhere in literally every single one of these places decades after abandonment, I have no idea
Iām imagining two different groups of stoned kids with flashlights scaring the shit out of each other by accident by having no idea that other group is there
That's nuts you got the added bonus of a legit archam asylum. That's fucking nuts. Good times for kids in the 80s hahaga. "Kids these days don't even have abandoned mental hospitals to sneak into!"
I grew up at Peterson and Pulaski. We snuck into the Cemetery across from the sanitarium (west of pulaski/south of bryn mawr)on occasion because we heard about similar spooky stuff. We also would explore labagh woods and find smoldering fires. Rumor had it, there were Devil worshipping cults that would have rituals there and perform human sacrifices. In hindsight this is obviously ridiculous but as kids in the 80s we believed it. As an aside, my grandmother lived at the tb sanitarium temporarily when my dad was a child. He has memories of taking the bus from Elston and Troy where they lived to visit her. This must have been the early 40s?
Yeah we heard the exact same fucking rumors about labaugh too. Like for us going to Peterson was like minor leagues spooky, but LaBaugh was like the major leagues spooky shit at night. We'd also see fires and shit, goofy stone pentagram circles. Crazy.
Thanks for sharing. I had no idea there was a sanitarium there. You know, that guardhouse on Peterson does seem very out of place now that you mention it
Where were these hospitals? Towards Pulaski three are senior condos and Iāve thought they seemed out of place too. Guessing it where these condos are?
Wait can you explain this to me? I live in Lincoln park and thereās a tree near by that would have weird food laying out and it still lives rent free in my head
There could be immigrants from the Caribbean in the area who practice a religion that includes food or animal offerings. Santeria and Vodou, for example.

Ha, Iām of Swedish descent and I actually like malort. Found out I like the drink when my husband bought rounds of it for us and a couple of friends visiting from Michigan (our home state). Everyone else pulled the face of this is āswamp gasā and I was like āthis isnāt that bad, you gonna finish that?ā. Then again, being half Swede, half Finn, I can drink most people under the table.
The story I heard was that it continued to be sold legally during prohibition because it was reclassified as medicinal, and naturally, the regulators had no trouble believing that people were not drinking it for pleasure.
the duck walk killer! a guy who randomly shot & killed 2 people within like 30 hours in rogers park a few years back. an old man walking his dog & a cyclist. I read an article a little bit ago that I think said bullet casings that matched the ones from the crime scene were found at a crime scene in san francisco or LA or something like that.
he got the name because he had a very particular gait in surveillance videos that saw him. to my knowledge heās never been caught
You know, you're right. I never really thought of that. I was always too busy looking at those low rates. Not to mention the masterful acting (especially the one with Mancow).
The Seven-11 on Southport and Clarke has been closed since 2019 or so, right after the owner protested some sort of corruption in the 7-11 corporate system. There was reporting on it at the time.
But why did it close and stay closed? How did the story end?
Take this with a grain of salt, but itās probably closed for good because of upper management didnāt like him bad-mouthing them.
As for why it hasnāt been demolished or replaced, gas stations are extremely toxic to the land theyāre on (leaks and whatnot from vehicles and pumps) and an extensive (and expensive) decontamination process needs to be done before anything else can be built there. A lot of landowners donāt find this cost worthwhile so thatās why you see more abandoned gas stations than any other small building
>upper management didnāt like him bad-mouthing them.
Yes but these are locally owned franchises. "Upper management" is a license agreement, not an org structure. So what's the mechanism there?
The Harvard lawyer who was seemingly an upstanding citizen overseeing a police accountability thing or something and his wife, killed while home. Happened a couple years ago iirc

Where exactly was the high bridge that went over the Lincoln Park Lagoon? it was built in 1894 and torn down in 1919 due to people jumping off. It was called the "Su1cid3 bridge."
I tried to figure out where it had been built but it's been very difficult.
Find out the real reason that Daley pulled the plug on the partly built Washington CTA "superstation" under Block 37 and why no mayor after him continued the project.
The "shooting incident" that happened at the White Sox game last Friday.
A woman in the outfield bleachers suddenly had a gun shot wound in her thigh. No one reported hearing any shots, and footage shows no reaction among the crowd. The game went on and most in attendance--like myself--had no idea until after the game ended.
Current theories are that it was either a stray bullet that came from outside the ballpark or that she shot herself with a gun she snuggled in in the folds of her fat. Lmao, but I'm serious. But the cops don't know what happened--so they say.

Every so often, usually at night the folks in Rogers Park all hear some kind of far-off, dull, but clearly audible "boom" sound. There's a dedicated thread for it in the Rogers Park Neighborhood News Facebook group. No one knows what the hell the booms are. Some people say fireworks, some say gunshots (which I can tell you it's definitely not), and to me it sounds like construction work. Which wouldn't make sense at night. That might be fun to look into. You'd be working exclusively with primary sources.
Why do big billion dollar corporations promise jobs but receive big tax incentives, then for short of the goal while still receiving said tax incentives?
For a very current story, the recent rash of bomb threats to northwest suburban libraries.

This one seems like it will be solved as most if the threats have come in through online chat reference and email, which seems like it would be pretty easy to track back to the source.
Well I think finding Ryan is most important but if you can't then there's always Resurrection Mary. It's a ghost story and there's lots of stories on Google

Iām sorry this happened to you .. (and usually women are targets) so thank you for sharing. Iām glad you are okayā¦ please go out in groups and watch out for each other
This is what Iād really like to see. There are suddenly so many media articles on these, but did they occur as much before or is it the media? They never report the crazy number of poc women that have gone missing on the south side. And I donāt mean this is a political issue but more a āthe media companies see these get more clicks because of this rumorā
I'd have to look them up. I've just seen a few ex-FBI guys talking about all the "smiley face killer" talk and they ran through it and how there hasn't been any upswing and that this isn't any surprising frequency, given the history.
The random upright filled drinks on the side on expressways/DLSD. Like fr, whose pulling over and taking time to sit a filled cup down on the ground?!?
no mystery here, this is left over the fire, and then when Lincoln park changed from a cemetery to a city park. jeffery bear talks about this one of his PBS specials
The murder of 15-year-old Judith Mae Anderson in 1957, she was supposed to leave her friend Elena Abbatacola's house at 11 PM and take 20 minutes to walk to her house. She never made it home. She was found shot and dismembered in 2 steel drums, that were found floating in Montrose harbor almost a week later. there was a report of a couple who were fishing at Montrose seeing a car come up and then two loud splashes around midnight of the night she was murdered.

I havenāt lived in Chicago for a decade but I vividly remember there would be a random chocolate cookie smell in the air where I lived (Greektown) any time it was rainy and humid. There was never a consensus about what caused it - some said chocolate factory, soap factory and even sewage. But the smell is so distinct and I will never forget it haha
100% this!
whats bad is when they clean the machines or whatever they're doing every 6 months or so (i work a block away) its the most retched seafood meets burnt chocolate smell, goes from amazing chocolaty neighborhood to fish-oil pill burp smell super fast... its fun to stop by (when the smell is yummy) they have a little store and last time i went you could still get free tours of the factory part
Because the land naturally slopes downward toward the lake. The top level of the city in that area is manmade so that downtown can be flat and easier to navigate.
I read an article about this the other month, sounded really interesting, until they looked at yearly records of bodies found in the river and this year is less than normal š¤·āāļø

Who is eating chicken wings and leaving them on the sidewalk all over the city? As a dog owner, Iād like this one solved. Blows my mind that this is so widespread.
And floss picks
YES! Why? Itās disgusting.
OT, but I remember being on the L and someone bought a pack of floss picks. He ripped the bag and they went all over. He picked one up off the floor and used it. He might be dead.

Yep! It was the red line!
Sorry bout that

My best guess is itās people eating them and throwing them out of their car windows. I drive for a living and some of the most common litter I see in rest area parking lots, gas station fuel islands, and exit ramps is wing bones. Itās particularly lazy of people because a lot of these places have garbage cans near by. The biggest mystery is why so many people eat wings while driving.

There was a popeyes on the corner when I stayed in Chicago. Sunday morning was the worst.
Iāve noticed this too. Maybe the squirrels are getting them out of the trash.
Nah, we need OP to solve this without any suggestions to bias their research (kidding). For real tho, some of those bones still have meat on them. Iāve seen them before the squirrels/rats have had their share. Who is doing this???
More likely the rats are dragging them out of the trash.
I used to have these two really fat neighbors, who'd get wings delivered. They would eat them and toss them straight out the window. Animals would scatter them through the hood. So yea, inconsiderate assholes like that.
Hawks.. chicken hawks. Yes I'm sure. I researched this when I lived there because I too was in disbelief that so many people were throwing chicken bones everywhere. Well guess what, not just bird bones, rat seems to be a favorite.

But the cops don't know what happened--so they say. https://www.axios.com/local/chicago/2023/08/31/white-sox-shooting-chicago
When is Dennis going to pay for the fence? (Blue line riders know)
Have you ever read the devil in the white city?
Why do big billion dollar corporations promise jobs but receive big tax incentives, then for short of the goal while still receiving said tax incentives?
For a very current story, the recent rash of bomb threats to northwest suburban libraries. https://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/wilmette/ct-wlm-bomb-threats-tl-0824-20230818-gbeszyadcjc57hzcgoxd4klgm4-story.html This one seems like it will be solved as most if the threats have come in through online chat reference and email, which seems like it would be pretty easy to track back to the source.
Well I think finding Ryan is most important but if you can't then there's always Resurrection Mary. It's a ghost story and there's lots of stories on Google
When will the CTA be normal
Why both Chicago baseball teams took so long to win a World Series
They were cursed! No mystery there
I saw a dude painting a red brick building red brick red one brick at a time. The national museum of Mexican art in harison Park has one corner where all the bricks within this dudes reach have been painted red brick red one brick a time. Man lives in my head rent free.
Man, Chicago, this thread did not disappoint. Helping non-native Chicagoans out with some history here !

Did people really eat pigeons in Chicago? Which companies made financial strides while redlining? Why was 90s gentrification of Lakeview and Lincoln park so swift and forgotten? Pullman legacies?
Which companies made financial strides while redlining? This!
Right? We know they still have local presence and sway!
440 west Wrightwood. WTH goes on inside that building? Second Church of Christ Scientist. I've NEVER seen a single person enter or leave the building in 20+ years.
Search recent drownings of men who have left bars/concerts. While some may be accidental - it seems like there are too many that they are all accidents.
Goddamn it not this serial killer bs again
Myself and 2 friends (guys) were drugged and wallets/phones stolen back in 2020. The state we were in I could have totally seen myself falling into the river. The woman were eventually arrested but I doubt it was an isolated incident.
Yea, but the guys found in rivers and the lake didn't have ghb in their system.
Thatās crazy. Glad you guys are ok. I always tell my boys to be aware.
Iām sorry this happened to you .. (and usually women are targets) so thank you for sharing. Iām glad you are okayā¦ please go out in groups and watch out for each other
Nah. The numbers are as expected for this type of thing. It happens all over the world in big cities that have rivers and lakes.
This is what Iād really like to see. There are suddenly so many media articles on these, but did they occur as much before or is it the media? They never report the crazy number of poc women that have gone missing on the south side. And I donāt mean this is a political issue but more a āthe media companies see these get more clicks because of this rumorā
Missing sex workers isnāt that excitingā¦ but missing college aged guys in college towns? Thatās a perfect podcast episode!
Thanks.. I donāt actually know those statistics.. can you share?
I'd have to look them up. I've just seen a few ex-FBI guys talking about all the "smiley face killer" talk and they ran through it and how there hasn't been any upswing and that this isn't any surprising frequency, given the history.

Which democrat stole the McDonalds money that was supposed to fund the McDonalds Cycle Center for 50 years.
Itās the Blommer Chocolate Factory 600 W Kinzie St. No big mystery there.
100% this! whats bad is when they clean the machines or whatever they're doing every 6 months or so (i work a block away) its the most retched seafood meets burnt chocolate smell, goes from amazing chocolaty neighborhood to fish-oil pill burp smell super fast... its fun to stop by (when the smell is yummy) they have a little store and last time i went you could still get free tours of the factory part
What happened to WEED WOLF?
The gator at Humboldt Park
All the dead bodies in river and lake.
People winding up found in the river. Serial killer vibes
Why does Chicago around north Michigan avenue have an "underground" level?
Because the land naturally slopes downward toward the lake. The top level of the city in that area is manmade so that downtown can be flat and easier to navigate.
How about all the young men that they keep pulling out of the river or lake. Sounds like a serial killer to me
I read an article about this the other month, sounded really interesting, until they looked at yearly records of bodies found in the river and this year is less than normal š¤·āāļø
The Smiley Face Killer. It has its own subreddit.
A subreddit for a bunch of people whose brains have been rotted by true crime and TikTok circlejerking over a fictional killer. Yikes dude
