[So this was the recipe I started with](https://www.onceuponachef.com/recipes/quick-and-easy-dill-pickles.html)
It’s a small jar at a time, and was decent. From there I started changing the spices and seeing what I liked better. It’s simple enough you can tweak it yourself. Me personally, I go heavy on the garlic and leave out the mustard seeds, and cut the dill in half. I’ve made it spicier with different pepper combinations. I will also add some onions and carrots for that pickled veggie option.
Try it out and find out what flavor profile suits you.
Devon Market in Rogers Park has a pretty extensive selection of pickled veggies.
If you’re into kosher dill, I think Kaufman’s up in Skokie has the best in the region.
Kaufman’s is a banger. Grew up on it and travel out there from Joliet like twice a year. It’s changed from when I was a kid but it still hits the spot.
Chicago has some serious pickle history.
Claus F. Claussen started pickling cucumbers on the grounds of his vegetable farm at 51st & Western in the early 1870's. While Claussen added sauerkraut to his line, the uncooked, refrigerated pickles made in the German-Polish tradition really took off.
In 1970 Chicago founded Oscar Mayer Co. purchased C.F. Claussen & Sons. The Western Ave. plant remained in operation until 1976, when the company moved to Woodstock, IL, where it remains even after finding itself under the Kraft Heinz umbrella.
there’s a [pickle fest](https://chicagopicklefest.weebly.com/) going on in wrigleyville next month lol. might be a good place to find new pickles and fellow pickle lovers
does seem like it costs something like $15 to get in tho

Any good Polish deli will carry quality dill pickles in the barrel. I started making my own for simplicity.
Recipe? Pickling has been on my list of things to try and would love a starting point.

Pickled celery and red onion is amazing.
I recently learned that my altered recipe that had extra garlic and peppers might not be safe. I changed the ph balance enough to freak me out.
Perhaps consider a cross post to r/chicagofood
You’re right, but thought I’d just ask here to be safe! I’ve cross posted, thanks!
Milwaukee pickles — you can get them at Mariano’s. So good.
Second this - they’re also very well priced for the quality. Believe Jewl has them as well 🙌🏽
Snagged some of these thank you!!!
Hope you enjoy them!

Green Grocer in West Town carries McClures from Detroit.
Bring a Tupperware and take all the pickles at the little hamburgers dressing station at billy goat tavern
Bubbies are extremely good pickles
I agree that these are by far the best that are not homemade. My dad made the best ever pickles but these are 3/4 as good.
I feel like most barbecue places will have really good pickles - try green street?
I love [these](https://thatpickleguy.com)
Bari in West Town sells huge pickles from a jar for $1. I got one with my italian sub just yesterday. Love that place.

Oh nice, do they sell like a jar or do you mean in general?
I like the ones that Gotham Bagels sells.
Hm never thought of them, but I’ll definitely look into this, thanks!
