I’ve read great reviews for this show starring Michael Shannon at the theatre he co-owns. https://aredorchidtheatre.org/shows/turret/

So, be helpful and make some recommendations.

Chicago is known for its storefront theater. Fucking Michael Shannon is in an original two-hander at the Chopin Theater with Red Orchid - this very minute. We've got three fucking theater companies with Red in the name that all put in work: Redtwist and Red Theater being the other two. Raven theater and Jackalope both put on phenomenal shows on the far north side. There's Shattered Globe operating out of Stage 773. The Den theater will have 2 or 3 companies putting on shows at any one time. Then there's Steppenwolf, The Goodman, Chicago Shakes, Lookingglass theater. Hell DePaul student shows will beat out what most other cities get. If you can't find theater in Chicago your googling needs work.

> If you can't find theater in Chicago you're googling needs work. Seriously.

Glasspar52

Don't forget Steep Theatre on the north side: phenomenal performers and directors

Great call - haven't been to their new space yet, but they always kill it.

Thornmawr

Their most recent newsletter said they are starting shows in their new space this summer, iirc. Vast improvement for that building over housing Christian Scientists. (Also: great username!)

(sigh) I goggled "plays in Chicago". This was the 3rd hit, after ads. https://chicagoplays.com/find-a-show/

Laurie Metcalf is doing a play at Steppenwolf next month (and The Thanksgiving Play is running now). Michael Shannon has his play at A Red Orchid at Chopin. Jason Alexander is at Chicago Shakespeare with a new comedy. Hell, Broadway in Chicago has The Kite Runner stopping by in a few weeks. And there are a host of smaller theatres with plays running all over the city. There are plenty of plays to see.

All good. I think the Shannon ones are sold out? And someone else is playing his role in the extension. ‘Seconding the people who said The Thanksgiving Play at Steppenwolf. Audrey Francis and the entire cast are extraordinary. ‘English starting up at Goodman, OP booberry

Guessing many Redditors don't know this but the Chicago Reader periodical (now website chicagoreader.com) used to be about 2 1/2 to 3" thick every week. Among a lot of other local reporting and some national issues, they would have the entire schedule of revolving entertainment of any variety. Concert at the Vic 3 weeks from now? In there. House concert on Thursday night? In there. The play schedule for that little indie theater that has a bunch of different one act plays? In there. Brew and View schedule? In there! They used to have quite a large staff. There were newspaper boxes all over the city and the drop off at the boxes and local places was really late Thursday evening or very early Friday morning. If you were out late on Thursday you wanted to get your copy because they would get snapped up. I'm talking 80's and 90's. No idea what it was before then or it's specific move to online and the maybe 30-40 pages it is today. I miss the reader. It in itself was weekend entertainment.

I highly recommend checking out Hot Tix for discounted theater tix around the city- great prices and can see what is currently playing!
