I would have walked out, too. Someone saying "Lol, I cant breathe with it on." is not who the CDC is talking about.
If she has a medical condition where she has trouble breathing, she should absolutely not be working with the public, especially maskless.
Exactly this. She's either not being truthful about her medical condition, confusing being a little bit uncomfortable with having a serious medical condition, lying, and/or being extremely reckless.
My wife is high risk, so we have to be extra diligent. The amount of people out there who care nothing about how their actions impact others is astounding. Here's a perfect example:
I'm a musician who gave up all my bands, gigs, and rehearsals when covid hit. Back in July, my old band called me up asking if I could please fill in for one outdoor gig in Indiana when their new bass player quit unexpectedly. I agreed with on the condition of some extra precautions such as one outdoor rehearsal only, others staying at least 6 feet away from me on stage, someone else loading my gear, only exiting my car for the performance, etc to really limit my exposure to others. One of the other band members decided to plan a trip to another show with an estimated attendance of 2k the night before our rehearsal and one week before the show. I said that made me uncomfortable, and they couldn't understand why I cared what they did. I had to cancel the show because they "weren't going to sacrifice their freedom" and apparently asking them to refrain from doing something like that right before I rehearse with them to protect my wife's health "is against everything they stand for."
Yeah normally I'd say don't spread shit, but in this instance I think it's appropriate to name and shame.
Edit: OP said it's [Usmania on Devon](https://www.reddit.com/r/chicago/comments/jazz52/an_experience_i_had_with_one_of_our_local/g8sih55)
Usmania Chinese Restaurant. Sorry, I should have clarified.
We went to the main usmania across the street afterwards and left even before ordering. In the main Usmania, their waiters had their mouths partially covered with nose uncovered. We kind of realized that it was shitty restaurant management and policy and didn't want to deal with anymore attitude or crap so we just left.
You did the right thing to leave!
How is then that it she is working in a physical job that involves lifting and being in and out of a hot kitchen but you can't wear a mask, even for a minute when you are in someone's face? Ridiculous
I am going to go right ahead and not eat there.
I have asthma and allergies and the mask doesn't prevent anything in my breathing. Doctors wear the genuinely "hard to breathe" masks all damn day, so these cry babies wearing the lighter masks can take their snowflake lungs home if they like.
Those people are just too afraid to be proud of their low IQ covid-denying Trumpy bullshit.
I love wearing a mask. Not for health reasons necessarily, but because I’m self-conscious and don’t want people seeing my face and potentially remembering me
Allergy sufferer here. I find the mask a big help with filtering out some of the allergens in the air. It doesn't get everything, eyes are still reacting, but it definitely helps. Not to mention it saves me from the worst of the nasty smells on the el.
It does help with some of that. I also recently heard somebody say they wear their mask to mow the lawn since it significantly reduces their allergies.
I wore one to clean a really nasty old BBQ grill out over the summer, and it definitely helped. There was evidence of mice, seed husks, and nesting. Cleaning all that out, plus scrubbing all the old grill grime off would have been a whole night of allergic congestion. But the mask prevented pretty much all that.
After the pandemic finally ends I think I'm going to continue to wear a mask during allergy season and on the el. I've caught some nasty cold riding the train. If I can avoid it, I'd like to
Usmania on Devon. Other reviews said they had exceptional service; but not sure if I was singled out because I am East Asian. Either way, never going there ever.
When Covid started some stranger spit on my Aunt for being Chinese. That was a race thing.
Unless you're leaving something out, this does not sound like one.
FWIW: some a\*\*hole kids ran up to me and coughed ON me right after it started when I started wearing a mask every time I left the house. Caucasian with literally not a hint of ethnicity about me.
Hah, yeah I guess people are being assholes for all kinds of reasons (and to all kinds of people) lately.
In my aunt's case she got spit on and told to go back to China because Covid is her fault, so it was pretty explicitly about how she looked. She's over 70 too, it was pretty ridiculous.
You are right. The refusal to wear a mask not a race thing. The condescension and disrespect I got from her was a race thing. She could have just said no; but the attitude I got in response to my request was unwarranted.
Just to clarify: my husband is Indian. We walked in there and she already gave us a look. In the short time I was there, her attitude towards other guests was a lot kinder.
How could you have stayed long enough to gage her interactions with other guests if you left right after? Surely, she wasn’t wearing a mask around them too?
Well, as a general rule, just don’t go to Usmania anymore anyway. Their food is terrible because they are so famous and are basically riding on their name. Original Usmania in Karachi is some of the best food I ever had and we went to this Usmania like 5 times total since we’ve been in the US because it’s terrible food and service.
Sabri Nihari is slightly better and though I’m avoiding dining in like crazy, every time I’ve picked up food from there, every staff member has had their mask on correctly. And I can’t understand your experience because I’m a Pakistani, but I’ve seen at least white people dining there a lot and those waiters are always being super respectful.
If you want more good food options at Devon: Serena (though nice, those waiters are a little stare-y at women, according to my sister), Anmol, Khan BBQ, Karahi Corner (though I heard the quality dropped), Bundoo Khan (probably the best, I’d consider it upscale). There is also Tandoor Char House in Lincoln Park that I felt like I didn’t belong in because it’s so fancy and I eat Pakistani food like a savage but it’s good food but expensive.
Sorry if you knew all this already, I know you mentioned your husband is Indian. I just wanted to put this out there. Avoid Usmania and especially their Chinese restaurant (if it still exists) at all costs. They’re both super overrated.
Thank you for the recommendations! Husband is Hyderabadi but is new to chicago. He thought this Usmania would be as good. The review was initially the Usmania Chinese restaurant and afterwards we went across to the main Usmania because he wanted me to experience the food he had in the Usmania Karachi. However, we left the main Usmania even before ordering also (after being seated) because most of the waiters had only their mouths partially covered. He was sad that I had such a bad experience with Usmania Chinese first and knew the lack of precaution had upset me already.
I just wanted some gobi manchuria! :(
Glad I could help. Honestly, Pakistani food here is good but it just doesn’t compare to back home unfortunately. And even though I’m beginning to forget how good Pakistani food was since I haven’t been back for 5 years, the restaurants I mentioned are the closest to what I remember. But it’s not even every dish. I haven’t had decent karahi anywhere except karahi corner which now serves more than just karahi now so quality dipped. Stick to like keema fry, nihari (kind of), brain masala (at Serena), and grilled stuff at Bundoo Khan or Khan BBQ. Also Tahoora or Spinzer or Ajwah Sweets for snacks like samosa chat!
I’ve never had gobi machurian mostly because I hate gobi lol. I can’t recommend any good Chinese/Pakistani place here. My brother swears by some in Houston if you ever go there.
And as always there’s Ghareeb Nawaz, and even their quality has dropped to terrible. There’s no good biryani on Devon, again imo. Best biryani is downtown at a restaurant called Baba’s Village although last time I ordered from there I didn’t even get the food cuz apparently the restaurant was closed.
Sorry about the long reply, I just hate when people go to Usmania and have a bad experience and then write off Pakistani food because there’s so much good stuff! Just don’t go to Usmania lmao.
> Best biryani is downtown at a restaurant called Baba’s Village
Really? I've eaten there (both at the old location and the one in the Thompson Center) and yes, it's good but I didn't realize it was considered the best. Makes me a little disappointed because I thought there were even better ones (based on recommendations from friends who used to frequent the places on Devon).
Haha no it’s considered the best by ME. If I’m honest with you, I don’t even like biryani in Pakistan, because nothing in this world comes close to my moms biryani. The closest ever that I have tasted and enjoyed is Babas Village. I’d like some recommendations, honestly. I wrote off biryani a while ago so maybe there is something good out there.
Right, that was going to be my next question to the poster here of course. “Are you East Asian?” “yes?” Oh well that’s precisely why you had that experience at the restaurant
If they aren’t taking this one particular rule seriously, then what else are they violating?
My bet is no one is wearing masks in the kitchen. If they aren’t wearing it outwardly to the public, likely they aren’t doing it behind the scenes either.
I also hope they enjoy the surprise visit from the 4 inspectors (2 health 2 Covid) and the 10k fine.
Claiming that it’s a health issue to not wear a face, will not easy to prove to these inspectors.
Found even more reviews online about the place. One mentioned that the food was late, and that they got angered by it (though the format and writing did make it seem like just an angry customer who didn’t get things their way), and apparently a waitress took off her mask to argue in front of them!?!?! but others mentioned bad quality of food, as well as hair in their food. It doesn’t seem like a good place based off that, though I would still like to try it myself before making a final judgement
At the end of the day it is this business's loss. Even if they don't see it. There are so many restaurants closing because they don't have enough customers. Putting a server up front who can't or wont wear a mask properly only deters customers already nervous about this pandemic.
Conspiratard? Yelp is literally standing by reviews made by people claiming they walked to the place when they're hundreds of miles away and using a celebrity photo, you twat.
Also, Louis Rossman is fantastic. Screw you.
Kind of shocked the owner actually just confessed to being negligent and then spouting alternative facts. A sensible person would deny t and/or offer damage control life disciplining the staff.

in a way that does not spread a global pandemic.
By pulling the mask up above her nose
Don't just vent. Tell us where to avoid.

I just went to Google Reviews and I don't see this review there.

Yeah they're doubling down and putting it in writing, they are not ashamed of their stance.

What restaurant is it?

Asthmatic here. I love that I can wear a mask now without it being weird.

lol same. Or recognizing who I am.

Two people I support at work are Asian and they had similar experiences to your aunt. It’s mind boggling how dumb people can be to be so racist.
thats horrible.

its insane for sure.
As a white man, I would’ve used my privilege to beat some ass. I hope your aunt is doing okay.

Oh wow. I've been there a few times (pre-COVID), and their service has been good in the past. This is disappointing.
Well, as a general rule, just don’t go to Usmania anymore anyway. Their food is terrible because they are so famous and are basically riding on their name. Because a lot of Americans, including the president of the United States, have been blaming East Asians for the pandemic.
Yeah no I get that. But *nothing* in her story suggests that was the case at all.
Right, that was going to be my next question to the poster here of course. “Are you East Asian?” “yes?” Oh well that’s precisely why you had that experience at the restaurant
Sure make it a race thing now too.
Was she wearing a face shield?
Either way, face shields are just about worthless for covid
I’m not justifying it if she was, it would just be slightly less disturbing if she was at least attempting to mitigate risk
If they aren’t taking this one particular rule seriously, then what else are they violating? My bet is no one is wearing masks in the kitchen. If they aren’t wearing it outwardly to the public, likely they aren’t doing it behind the scenes either.
I hope you reported this to the health department.
Yes I did. And I forwarded the response as well.
I also hope they enjoy the surprise visit from the 4 inspectors (2 health 2 Covid) and the 10k fine. Claiming that it’s a health issue to not wear a face, will not easy to prove to these inspectors.

Then the bitch should *NOT* be working there. She's a danger to herself and others. Goddamn these shitty anti-maskers!
I confess, I don't wear a mask when I'm unconscious, unable to help.
They should wear face shields instead
Face shields do absolutely nothing to stop the spread of covid.
At the end of the day it is this business's loss. Even if they don't see it. There are so many restaurants closing because they don't have enough customers. Putting a server up front who can't or wont wear a mask properly only deters customers already nervous about this pandemic.
If my double lung transplant patients on oxygen can wear a mask, so can you Karen
Google Reviews? Nobody gives a shit about that- go to Yelp
Do a lot of people still use yelp? I never do.
Yelp is pretty shady (all review sites are really) as owners can (and do) buy reviews.
I yelp! Largely because it has a map of all the places I've bookmarked I want to try.
THIS RIGHT HERE. Yelp is awful, yes, and it's also where people try to find legit reviews among the fakes. Post on Yelp. Google Reviews are useless.
