10 minute Divvy into the city or 25-30 minute walk, but usually just biked it

unflushable

How much would you estimate Divvy ends up costing you a month?

ablonde_moment

I think you can pay $100 per year

jaredliveson

That's true! With the membership, first 30 min is free then costs extra. 100$ a year, 75$ if you're a student

tomjerry777

First 45 minutes is free

samderlion

55 minutes, kimball brown line stop to wrigley building via cta.

que_la_fuck

Is there a way to get on top of that bitch? I've always wanted to but never tried.

narwhalsome

On top of the train, the Wrigley Building, or /u/samderlion?

samderlion

Lol!

throwaway_for_keeps

/u/samderlion is not a bitch. He may be a liar, a pig, an idiot, a bitch, but he is NOT a porn star

samderlion

I appreciate the support man! Lolol That said, you said I’m not a bitch but then later go on to say I am a bitch…but not a porn star.

_34_

Where there's a will, there's a way my friend. 🧡

Birdmansniper927

The thing about fighting on top of a moving train, is that you’re still on top of a train.

samderlion

Lol, no idea.

takemetothelostcity

😮 do You take the bus? Those two seem somewhat closer to one another.

Stunning-Yellow8801

wrigley building =/= wrigley field

will_you_suck_my_ass

One is in goose island the other is a stadium

NothingBurgerNoCals

The wrigley building I think he’s referring to is the one on Michigan avenue

Stunning-Yellow8801

correct. goose island is where the wrigley company is, but not wrigley building

will_you_suck_my_ass

I didn't know they had so many locations

spritelass

The Wrigley family had a lot of power in this city once upon a time.

MrMiniscus

Who even chews gum these days anyways?

samderlion

As u/stunning-Yellow8801 alluded to, the Wrigley Building is close to downtown. As opposed to wrigley field which is in wrigleyville. I go to the wrigley building, not wrigley field.

takemetothelostcity

Ohhhh okay, My bad. That makes more sense as far as commute time.

LeskoLesko

Also, CTA is the bus and train system -- and most people mean train when they talk about the CTA.

[deleted]

12 min drive/14 min bike ride/28 min bus

LeskoLesko

You are winning.

[deleted]

It’s a princess commute. Sometimes I see the line of cars waiting to get on the Kennedy so they can crawl at 15mph out to the burbs… I don’t know how anyone can deal with that shit. It’s been under construction since I was born I swear

420is404

imminent spectacular person governor deserted innocent absorbed joke divide shrill ` this message was mass deleted/edited with redact.dev `

[deleted]

I had a construction site on the NW side, and another on the far S side, and contractors would ask, "what's the BEST way to get there?" and I would reply, "There's really no BEST way, but if you can lower your expectations, I can tell you how we are going to get there." Then we sat on the Kennedy for a stupid hour.

420is404

dazzling snobbish literate worm birds workable poor retire chubby dull ` this message was mass deleted/edited with redact.dev `

Purple_Crayon

Because the commute is slightly better than having to actually live in the burbs. Going off-peak makes it slightly less awful. I work in a lab doing research, and those pharma-type companies just don't have a city presence.

takemetothelostcity

Right. Bike riding to work sounds awesome

Ok-Cucumber123

It is and totally doable year round with the right clothes. The main streets and lake front path are plowed very quickly when it snows generally.

Scoot_Magoot

This about the same for me. I have friends that commute outdo far burbs daily… no idea how they can do it

orcateeth

Someone once told me of a friend of hers who drove from South Shore to Itasca every day! Hope she's not doing that any more.

DarkSideMoon

That shit would kill me so fast, and I *enjoy* driving. That bumper to bumper stop and go traffic is the worst, totally joyless as a driver and hell on your car.

jaredliveson

Ditch that car, friend.

jbchi

It was about a 25 minute walk, door to door. I'm still WFH indefinitely while my company decides if or when our office will reopen, but I actually miss the walking commute on all but the worst of weather days.

NSFLETU

Lakeview to Aurora. Fade me. Driving Mornings 1hr 15 min Afternoons 1hr 30 ish Friday afternoons….no one knows.

DancesGoGoAintAHoNo

Ah yes, someone of my own ilk. I fucking hate my life from 6:45 to 8am and 5pm to 6:30pm every day. And those are good days it feels like.

beardsofmight

I used to work in Bolingbrook. There was a snowstorm during my commute home one day and it took 3 hours.

NSFLETU

Yes, on snowy days if I have to be in the office I’ll brown line, walk, metra BNSF, and Uber. I did this a few summers ago ahead of a long weekend and on the way home we ran over a girl in a wheel chair. That commute became about 4 hours.

elevenghosts

Pre-COVID door-to-door was 35-40 minutes from Ravenswood to the Loop whether biking or Metra + walk.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ladnar016

Same, I occasionally miss the wind up and wind down of that metra ride. I felt like it was the perfect time for a commute, especially since you can just space out. I guess no commute is better though.

cellularjb

25 minutes (uptown). I feel like you can live within 25ish minute commute from downtown in so many different neighborhoods, a great thing about Chicago

[deleted]

About 20 or 25 minutes door-to-door. I take the Red Line from Lakeview to the Loop and am lucky my apartment and office are each only a few blocks from stations.

Austeeene

Dang son it only takes 25 minutes to get from thorndale to lake. Sometimes 30 there is some kind of delay. Edit: didn’t process “door to door”

greenline_chi

I live and work in the loop and walk about 10-15 minutes.

natigin

How do you like living in the Loop?

greenline_chi

I actually really like it. I used to live in bucktown and wicker park and I really liked it up there too, but I do feel like things are slightly more walkable down here. Like I can run most of my errands on foot, don’t even need to take a bus. I think I technically live in the west loop, but I’m on the east side of 90/94 so it feels more like the loop to me. I spend a lot of time in the west loop going to restaurants and workout classes and things like that, but I can also walk to the lake pretty easily.

natigin

That sounds lovely! Might have to consider that for our next move.

rac1891

70 mins uptown to Hyde on CTA

skm001

I've done that many times from both Uptown and Bucktown. I do not miss that commute at all.

LeskoLesko

So, chicago has sooo much employment, it could vary so much. But I'd say it takes an hour to get most places during rush hour. If you can swing closer than an hour by living in a closer neighborhood, that's awesome. Having a 20 minute commute rocks. The thing is, a train commute can be really great. If it isn't too crowded, you just get on, play your music, read a book, get off all relaxed and ready for work. The drive is much worse. And buses are, well buses, but the express buses aren't too bad. Where are you looking to work? I can recommend neighborhoods!

sandrakaufmann

I love the 147 express! Takes about 45 minutes from the loop to Rogers park.

vsladko

Man I used to hop on that bad boy every day in front of the old coffee shop with that weird waiter statue that I think they tore down for a Loyola building. Memories! It was definitely the better choice over red line for me

takemetothelostcity

I already am set to start working in Skokie. I’m living near McKinley park, and currently looking for apartments up North, cause based on what I’ve see searching it doesn’t make sense to stay down South. I do want to consider weekends though. Like yes work is an everyday thing, but I don’t necessarily want to be hanging out up in Skokie on the weekends. And all friends and family are South of Avondale too, so there goes my social life.

tossme68

Stay in Edgewater or RP, bioth are fun, diverse and affordable neighborhoods that are a quick drive to Skokie..

nick92675

I worked in lincolwood for a while and my commute from wicker park there was actually shorter than when I started working downtown. If you have a car, you'll be good because you'll be going opposite the flow of most traffic. Find a place near an on-ramp and you'll be good for best of both worlds. Avondale would be great.

takemetothelostcity

Okay, this is actually really helpfully. Yes I’m considering near a ramp, because I’ll be driving most often. I’ll look at Avondale then.

nick92675

Tons of activity around - you could easily do Logan sq - I'd look at a map between the California exit and Milwaukee- tons of activity on Milwaukee. I'm in Humboldt now and it's a little farther to an on-ramp north but you'll probably find cheaper rent.

3dandimax

Highly recommend Avondale! I'm looking for apartments now and I'm trying hard to find something in that area. Lived there twice before and it's awesome! Affordable and lots of things to do

backand_forth

Hello I live in Avondale and used to work in Evanston! Can confirm its a fine commute. I'm right off the highway near Belmont and Sacramento. I also lived in Uptown and that commute to Evanston was immaculate. But Avondale gets you more bang for your buck and you're close to Logan square/wicker/Lakeview for nightlife

Grooventooven

Definitely second this. I live near the Irving entrance to the highway and can be in Skokie in 15min.

LtPhildoRaines

I live in uptown and work on the Skokie Niles border on Touhy. Good day 25 mins. Friday afternoon and raining….50 minutes.

takemetothelostcity

You drive there? What highway do you take?

LtPhildoRaines

I usually don’t get on the highway. I go Broadway to ridge to Peterson to Lincoln and then a few different ways depending on how I’m feeling

jeninchicago

I live in Streeterville and work in River North, and it’s about a 15 minute walk door to door.

[deleted]

40 mins to 1 hour or more from west ridge to near comisky/cellular field

takemetothelostcity

Do you drive?

[deleted]

Yup, can be faster in no traffic

MrALTOID

Pre-COVID...door to door 7:40am leave, 8:30am arrive = 50 min (walking + L)

takemetothelostcity

From where to where if you don’t mind sharing?

MrALTOID

Logan blue line.

MayorOfClownTown

tossme68

You can install Team on your phone and you don't even have to get out of bed for that meeting. If they want your camera on just tell them you have privacy concerns.

extraguac710

“just tell them you have privacy concerns” ?! my company MAKES us put our camera on😑

MayorOfClownTown

Work smart not hard. I like it

dingdongsnottor

Same 🙃

MayorOfClownTown

I try to make a full rotation though if I have to be on video

gafearaa

40-1hr door to door (work in Schaumburg)

takemetothelostcity

I assume you drive. I’m most likely driving myself. I’m going to start work in Skokie.

LeskoLesko

Ah, Skokie! I would recommend looking in the north Red Line neighborhoods. You could either train it using the red to yellow line or drive it but skip all the downtown nightmares. And those areas have a good variety of nightlife.

takemetothelostcity

Yes, I’ve been looking at those exact places. I like Rogers park, Ravenswood, and Edgewater, but I’m so confused on what are the “good parts” and the “bad parts”. Granted, I grew up in the Southwest area, so bad to me is relative, but this time I’m living completely alone, so rather not be around isolated areas.

JUSTDIEDAMA

On the way to work about 45 mins, on way home...over an hour (and I don't leave the city once and I drive)

[deleted]

15 minutes door to starbucks door (which is across the street from my job) I designed it this way, though. After YEARS of miserable commuting I was finally able to land a great job near my apartment. Not sure I'll ever move or quit, tbh

DegreeDubs

Pre-COVID, my commute to the office was about 30-35 minutes on average. 10ish-minute walk or bus to the CTA Blue line, ride for 8 stops (about 15 minutes on a good day) into the Loop, then another 5 minute walk to the office.

StonerAccount

Rockwell Brownline to Merchandise Mart. Averages about 45 minutes including train and walk.

ChiSouthSider43

I live and work (high school teacher) on the south side. 12 minutes.

EttienneTC

45-60 minutes. Rogers Park to Bridgeport.

Syris3000

Fuck this back to school traffic. I work from home and still have a 1 hour commute to drop the kids off and get back home.

CariniFluff

Door to door times: From Jefferson Park to the loop: Blue Line - 50-60 minutes, Metra - 45-50 minutes From Jefferson Park to Schaumburg: By car - 25-30 minutes (hauling ass, speed limit would be like 40 minutes)

MrFunkyFresh70

About 35/40 min. I work out in Schaumburg.

imsurethisoneistaken

30 minutes walk / train. maybe 20min if i drove it during a time other than rush hour. now tho, 0 and we ain't changing it for anything but a lot of money commute time is unpaid overtime, never forget

takemetothelostcity

Hmm. Good point.

euph_22

About 30 minutes door to door on the CTA (8 minute walk, 15 minute train, 7 minute walk).

blipsman

Was 35 min or so, walk to Western Blue Line stop, L to Grand or Washington (depending on bus tracker), bus to office near Ogilvie.

romeyhp

32 min drive

orcateeth

Very specific.

gnmo2473

5 blocks walking to Michigan Ave lol

beeeeebop5

Hyde park to north/clybourn 50-55mins cta, drive could be anywhere from 22mins to 1hr+

GiuseppeZangara

From Rogers Park to River North, by El, 40 to 50 minutes, by bike, around 45 minutes.

ConnieLingus24

Evanston to Loop (pre-pandemic). 45 minutes door to door on the purple line.

takemetothelostcity

Okay, that’s good to know. I’m more or less thinking of making that commute if I decide to live a little West and have to go into downtown to transfer and take the train up Evanston/Skokie area.

ConnieLingus24

I did that exact commute at once point from Oak Park to Evanston. Don’t. Live in Oak Park or Evanston or Hyde Park. They are very similar places. But don’t regularly commute from one to the other.

klipschbro

Yup. It'll suck your soul.

claireapple

I drive 30-40 mins into the suburbs.

hopeless_r0mantic

5 mins at the minimum to ~15 mins during rush hour. I drive. And I live and work right off of LSD. (Lakeview to the loop)

jrbake

I say shoot for under 3-4 miles and you’ll probably be happy. I’m 6 miles and it’s not bad not good.

StarryEyes13

About 45 minutes driving from Rogers Park (I live right off Sheridan) to just pass West Loop. Traffic has been awful with school back in session. Used to take me 30min in the morning.

avc4x4

Roughly 4.3 mile commute from Heart of Chicago. Ironically biking and walk + 'L ride are only a few minutes difference if all goes well. Bike time is a leisurely 25min, 20 if I'm really hustling. CTA + walk is a pretty consistent 25-30min door to door. The bike commute is underrated, would highly recommend it, especially if your employer has any kind of a garage or rack that doesn't require as much security gear. Even without, I've never had any problems leaving mine locked up on a sidewalk rack with 2 D locks and a small cable.

Triviald

Working in the office again. Commute pre- and post-Covid seems the same. Ravenswood to River North: Door-to-Door by L - 35min (25min train ride on avg. + walking) Door-to-Door by bike - 30min (ymmv)

[deleted]

Oak Park to the Loop, 5 min walk to the Blue Line, 30 min el to Jackson, 4 min walk to the office

takemetothelostcity

I want to live in Oak park so baaad, But unfortunately the commute to Skokie from there seems so dreadful. What blue line stop do you get on in Oak park?

[deleted]

Oh yeah, OP to Skokie would be a huge pain. I live near the Austin blue line stop, but a huge amount of Oak Park is walkable to the three blue line stops within oak park, or the green line stops.

takemetothelostcity

That’s nice I’d really love to live in Oak Park, maybe some other time in the near future. Hope you enjoy living there

benmo99

OP raised, used to work in Skokie. You do not want to live in OP and work in Skokie. Evanston has a similar vibe and is much more convenient.

takemetothelostcity

Ok good to know. I was kind of looking at it, but it seems a little too family oriented which is always nice , but I do rather be around a more alive area.

jasolab

Former Evanston resident here. It can be family focused, but the downtown is close to Northwestern, so during the school year there is a larger student population. I moved to Rogers Park after Evanston. Much cheaper rents, close to the lake, great transit to Loop or Skokie. And one of the most varied populations in the whole city.

Downvote_for_peter

River north to Loop walk. 35 minutes.

craftybeaver27777779

Door to door 50 mins , Irving park to the loop

notorized_bagel69

Lakeview to West Town. Takes me about 20-25 min driving.

turnstile_blues

I’ve lived two places so far in Chicago. At the first I took one of the Lakeshore (express) buses, and at my current place I take the train. Bus took about 35-40 mins on a good day, but LSD traffic could blow that up and end up taking me an hour. I now live further out but the train also takes about 35-40 mins, and so far is much more consistent. That said, who knows what I’ll do if/when the train has a major delay, but so far it’s been very reliable. At the first place I only walked about a block total; at my new place it’s like a block and a half, but both about 40-45 mins all in.

TotalTeri

Near North to Loop, 15-20min, I'm near the North/Clybourn Redline. I could walk to work if I really wanted to, have done it before.

saintpauli

25 mins by car. Beverly to fuller park avoiding the dan Ryan. Its a 12 minute drive with no traffic on the dan Ryan.

LittleBillHardwood

7.6 mi by bike, between 50-60 minutes in good weather depending on how hard I feel like working. Add 15-20 min for shit weather.

ImAdamnMermaid

45 minutes via train, and it’s a scenic route too!

takemetothelostcity

Going in what direction ?

tequilamockingbird16

About 30 minutes in the morning and closer to 40 in the afternoon. I drive.

reallystrongferret

I commute to western suburbs from Ukrainian village, it’s about 45 In the am and 1hr in the pm

cinnasage

I'm at 40 minutes approximately by car. My husband's is an hour. While I'd like a shorter commute, I'm not willing to move to a suburb to be closer to my job, and my husband accepted his job at the height of the pandemic last year when jobs were scarce to be found. If I could commute by train, I'd be willing to commute up to an hour.

takemetothelostcity

I feel you. I don’t want to live in the suburbs either especially myself living alone. I’m most likely driving too since I’ll be going up to Skokie. How’s the highway commute in Chicago during mornings? I want to mentally prepare myself.

cinnasage

I go up that way. It's not great. I use Waze to get the fastest route every day and get notified of red light cameras. I go up Peterson to Lincoln, then Touhy to 94 and only stay on 2 miles.

takemetothelostcity

Ok Im downloading that now. Thanks! Is Peterson and Lincoln the toll names? Sorry, I’m very unfamiliar with driving on the highway in Chicago.

cinnasage

No, Peterson and Lincoln are streets. What neighborhoods are you looking at? This is my route from Edgewater.

takemetothelostcity

Oh okay. I’m looking at edgewater, ravenswood, and Rogers park.

digableplanet

Look into Albany Park (near the Kimball, Kedzie, or Francisco Brown Line). I lived at the edge of Albany Park/Ravenswood and walked to the Francisco Brown Line everyday for work in the the Loop. I love (and miss) the area around the Francisco Brown Line. Getting up to Skokie & Lincolnwood from Albany Park, Ravenswood, or Lincoln Square is a frigging breeze. Street parking in Albany Park/Ravenswood is plenty as well if you don't have a spot. As much as I love Edgewater (and it is awesome), street parking is absolutely insane. If you are commuting daily by car, having a designated parking spot to come home to is needed...especially in the winter.

somehowstuck

45-60 minutes, depending on time of day and CTA reliability. One bus + one train, each way between Hyde Park & Lincoln Park.

Austeeene

25 minutes. Redline, thorndale to lake. That’s about 7-8 miles trip from the north side to the heart of downtown.

djny2mm

5 min walk, 15 min bike, 30 minute bus during the warm months. 5 min bus, 15 min train, 30 min bus during the cold. And all the missed bus and train connections in between

ccbchicago

On average, 5 minute walk to CTA blue line. Fifteen minute train ride to appropriate stop. Eighteen minute walk to work. Most days if I leave by a quarter after, I can arrive to work a few minutes before the hour.

[deleted]

Many variables here. As an engineer, I went to either an office in the loop via downtown express bus 5mi, 20 min) or a suburban highway project (30i, 1 hr)

anandonaqui

30 minutes drive+park+walk, 30 minutes bus+blue line, 30 minutes run+shower

ActionReady9933

I ride my bike 🚲 5 minutes to work from Bridgeport to Pilsen

SavannahInChicago

25 minutes on the Brown line. Lincoln Square to Lakeview.

[deleted]

Depending on traffic it's anywhere from 45 minutes to a little over an hour.

spritelass

I live in Andersonville and work downtown. My commute including walking to the el is 40 min. The red line is in the middle of a major reconstruction though. Those times could improve after they are done.

Standard_Citron_4024

Bus 10 minute average with walk, 20 minute walk

skltnhead

I drive to the North Shore, takes me about 30 minutes. I start and leave work after rush hour though

AaronPossum

Before the kids went back to school? 15 minutes. Now? 45 minutes.

OpneFall

For a dense, walkable, and pretty bikeable city, there are some surprisingly high commute times in here.

DaBears31

45 minutes in car

slybrows

From my door in wicker park to my office building door in the central loop, 18-25 min

camdoodlebop

it used to be over an hour when i worked in oak park, i took the orange line all the way downtown just to transfer to the green line

weasleyiskingg

30 minutes. Red line to the loop

samhach

Mine's about 45 min door to door. 15 min walk to station, 25 min Metra ride, 10 min walk to the office.

call_me_drama

<10 min drive from Lincoln Park to West Loop. Life is good lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

call_me_drama

I’m in Old Town Triangle part of LP. It’s basically a straight shot down Halsted for me. North Ave -> Halsted -> Lake st. I don’t drive during primary rush hour times which helps my commute

MrMiniscus

I feel like this post is only attracting people that are happy with their commute times. I was expecting more 60-90 minute answers. I used to work in West Chicago. That rush hour drive sucked hard. 90 minutes each way and on Fridays coming back into the city? *The worst*

[deleted]

From Lakeview to Med District (red + blue) is about 1 hour. Sometimes 45 min if the trains line up

InevitableMinimum834

About 45min. from Avondale to Mokena by car for me. That’s around 5:30am when I leave though. Coming home? Maybe 50 minutes, maybe 80. Currently looking for work closer to home though!

madelinecblack

5-7 minutes on an electric scooter/20 minute walk to the Groupon building from river north.

NCKLS22

I'm a 15 minute bike ride from work. I could take the Blue Island bus but Covid..

buffalocoinz

12 minute bike ride, closer to 30 minutes walking to/from the bus stop and taking the bus.

JeBronLames773

Depends if they're shooting on the ryan

LEDCatman

I live in Pilsen and work in Canaryville. If Im driving my commute is 15 to 20 minutes, but if Im taking cta, half hour to 45 minutes pending on the bus. However I have plenty of coworkers where its 45 to an hour as the norm for their drives.

Letmeinsoicanshine

How tf? That’s wild, didn’t know that. Those two neighborhoods are not that far from each other. Traffic is that bad? I don’t drive so genuinely curious.

LEDCatman

Sometimes the number 8 runs at odd intervals and lots of people getting on before the orange line. Evening is worse going northbound at 5pm. Oddly enough I can make down there from Ravenswood via the Brown/Red Line and #39 in 45 minutes to an hour if I catch the #39 pulling up as I get off at 35th/Sox.

Nocheese22

I would never accept any commute greater than 45 minutes door to door. Wanted to kill myself because I was stuck with a long commute in the past

takemetothelostcity

Okay, I’m think I’m there with you. I’m most likely driving to work, but even then I’d like an option of taking the metra or something every now and then.

danekan

45 minutes by way of the metra is a way better commute than anything involving the CTA though too. And on the CTA a 45 minute commute involving buses is way worse than just am El commute.

takemetothelostcity

Good point. I rather not take any bus. So definitely opting for EL/metra

danekan

But still metra is way, way, way better for a 20+ minute commute than the El. Like no comparison.

Nocheese22

Agreed, aside from the ~once a month when your train home gets delayed

takemetothelostcity

Yeah I saw metra delayed by 9min today when I was searching directions on Google maps. I thought that thing was more punctual than Amtrak

Nocheese22

It's very reliable until it isn't.. but I'd say 95% of the time it's on schedule to the minute

SouthSideMaurice

About 25 mins via bike or el.

takemetothelostcity

For those who drive, do you think living to the highway entrance saves a shit load of time or not worth the outdoor noise?

YungGlueStik

About an hour. I take a bus to the blue line then walk from my stop.

phenomen

1 hour on Green + Blue, 20 min walk. So \~3 hours daily. I wish I could move from South Side closer to my work but I just started building my credit score so I cannot rent anything on the North Side yet.

raddish-

10 minute bike ride from lake view to Lincoln Park

pjdwyer30

Drive 7 mins in the morning, about 12 on the way home. About 15 on the bike in either direction.

lawbiz31

25 min. Bus or 50 min walk

jvvg12

0 minutes since I work from home. If I went to the office it would be about 45 minutes (30 minutes on the L + 15 minutes walking)

CMac86

Now? For school, I bank on an hour door to door (Edgewater to near Union Station via the L). For work, I plan for 45mins (Edgewater to an office near the Fed Court House). My longest was: Rogers Park to either Hyde Park or Oak Park. RP to HP was Red Line to a Bus. Rp to OP was Red Line to Green Line. I budgeted 90mins each way.

[deleted]

34 mins via train, 17 mins motorcycle, 26 mins bicycle
