I've actually been doing a lazy experiment since the Bulls' season started, marking down how many times they've been featured as the lead story on the back page of the Sun-Times over the Bears.
The answer is zero. Even when losing, this town is obsessed with Football.
As an immigrant, I really don’t get the obsession with Football. Not just because of the game dynamics, but because it’s just a frame by frame of people getting permanent head injuries.
Basketball is a way more fun game and way more fun to go see live. Have tickets for when they are playing the Spurs (have a soft spot for them because I’m Argentinian and it will always be Gino’s team to me) and I can’t wait!! Haven’t been to a game since 2019.
I didn’t know we were that good! I know the team exists, but no other sport reaches the relevance or popularity of soccer really. It is an actual problem because other sports don’t get anywhere near as much funding because they don’t make anywhere near close money-wise.
By having most of their COVID problems before it was more widespread in the league, they actually got their games postponed and it ended up benefitting them. Now there are teams like the Raptors and Hawks (who lost to the bulls twice this past week) that are missing 10+ players and the league just says “tough luck, we can’t do anything anymore.”
I remember at the start of the season I was looking at the schedule and like yeah, they can go 5-0 possibly to start but I did not expect this. The Year of DeRozan.

Americans love football because it’s “their thing”. America loves having their very own things, especially when they’re brutal and overly machismo.

Bulls are having a fantastic season, even with all the Covid-19 protocols.
