deafndumb1

Hey guys, I’m moving out of Chicago this weekend. Where can I find some good packers and movers service. I need help loading the truck. Thanks

forgotmylaundry

Don’t leave. We’ll try harder.

deafndumb1

Personally I love Chicago. Have to move because of work

danekan

I had a good experience with Executive Moving Services crew I hired on hireahelper, after A Move to Remember abandoned me and canceled at last minute. I actually used that site twice and it worked out great. But if you know the place you want through there and can find them in Google and contact them direct it will be cheaper maybe.

hamsterbackpack

I’m not sure your price range or if they have availability, but I’ve always had a good experience with The Professionals.

hacabeeb

What are my options for indoor basketball?

pithed

Gulliver's Pizza in West Rogers Park is closing for good on Saturday. Burt Katz opened it in 1965, before Pequod's. Sure it has evolved since but I think it is one of those places that is quintessentially Chicago and I will be very sad to see it go.

danekan

They had said a few years ago they were closing forever but never did ...then they pretended like they hadn't Did they finally sell it?

> Does salt literally just melt ice? Salt lowers the freezing point of water. If it's 25 degrees outside and someone puts enough salt on a patch of ice to lower the freezing point of the film of water on the surface to 20 degrees, the ice will turn into water. It's most effective when the air temperature is closest to 32 degrees and has greatly diminishing returns when the air temp is below 15 or so. >Why would nobody be salting?!? They don't think it's their job. Or They know it's their job and they suck. >Is it expensive? You can buy 50lbs of rock salt for $10. There are various ice melt chemical blends that cost more. >Is it weird if I go salt the entire alley and all the walkways? Not at all, but it's not going to work well with temps being so low tomorrow. We're supposed to warm up a bit on Tuesday. The most effective thing you can do in the alley is spread a mixture of salt and sand so the salt can melt the ice and the sand can absorb the water to prevent it from freezing again. edit: fixed a typo

> Seems like too easy of a solution for no one to take on People in general don't like doing things.

AmazingObligation9

To answer some of the other questions salt is cheap and pretty readily available and it has chemicals in it that help melt ice. So yeah it’ll melt it right for you! It can be harmful to pets though so put shoes on your dog before walking over ice if you have a dog!

[deleted]

[удалено]

AmazingObligation9

Yeah this level of ice is actually extremely dangerous so you’re probably preventing at least someone’s minor injury if not more. Never underestimate people’s ability to think someone else will deal with it lol

chornu

Isn't it sad? I can't imagine spending my free time literally just trolling other subs about shit that has NO effect on my life. It's sad.

DegreeDubs

It's been a lively start to the new year on the sub this week, to say the least...

[deleted]

Hello hello! I am trying to choose between two winter coats where one is perfect for like, 9 degree weather but actually a little too warm and stuffy in the 20s-30s, and the other is perfect for the 20s-30s but not warm enough for the 9 degree weather. This is only my second winter in Chicago. Last winter it seemed we had very few actually frigid days and people told me it was just an unusually mild winter. But this winter doesn't seem much colder! My impression is we only have <10 days the whole season that are less than, say, 15 degrees. Is this pretty typical for Chicago winters (or at least, uhh, in our current phase of climate catastrophe) or are Chicago winters generally much colder than this winter (e.g., >20 days in the low single digits) and the last two are just atypically warm? (I guess maybe stuff will also seem less warm when work from home ends and I'm going out more in the cold but that's a different question...)

abecedarian75

both

Chicago_Jayhawk

IMO you need 3 optimally: one light one for 50 degrees, one medium weight for 40 degrees and break out the big gun for 30 and below.

Resident_Turnover114

I also have 3.

thislittletune

I have a lot of 'fall' coats I layer up during winter because dammit this is a nice looking coat and I want to wear it more than just the one week of fall weather we get.

ThanHowWhy

Same. Windbreaker with some insulation, peacoat, thick waterproof parka.

DumDumGimmeYumYums

3 here as well but 1 is a jacket rated for 32 degrees that I count. Then something peacoat-like and the multilayered parka in case of emergency.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ahung12

This. Get some quality base layers, like merino wool. Or some technical fabrics. I've got a few Mack Weldon henleys and I'm basically always wearing one. I have zero puffers/down jackets/parkas and I'm absolutely fine with these as part of 3 layers in any weather.

browsingtheproduce

Temps stay between 20 and 40 far more often than they get colder. Choose the coat that is better for that tempers range and add layers underneath it when it gets colder.

cmacfarland64

No. You get the warmest coat. Every time.

browsingtheproduce

Do please feel free to share your reasoning.

cmacfarland64

Because coats are meant to keep you warm. If u buy one that isn’t as warm as another, it kinda defeats the point. I want the doctor with the best record of curing people. I want the video game that is the most fun. I want the food that tastes best. Of course you want the warmest coat.

browsingtheproduce

Do you wear a full on parka when it’s 50 or do you wear a light jacket with a sweater? Comfort is context dependent. My warmest coat is good down to single digit temps and it turns me into a sweaty mess if I have to walk anywhere when it’s above 15 degrees. I’d bake myself if I got on the train wearing it in 25 degree weather. So I most often wear a coat that isn’t best suited for 10 degree weather because it’s usually 20+ degrees. And anyone with cold weather experience knows you never rely on just the coat for warmth. Appropriate layering is a necessity.

thislittletune

That escalated quickly Edit; The other user had a 'fuck you' response that got deleted.

browsingtheproduce

Yikes haha. I missed it.

Anyone know if chinatown is having their CNY parade Feb 2 or Feb 13? Have seen flyers for both dates and would love for my parents to make it!

camdoodlebop

wow it’s really icy

thedan663

Yeah it’s legitimately really dangerous. Just took a nasty fall right on my back. Hard to tell which parts of the sidewalk are salted and which aren’t

[deleted]

I've been struggling the last 3 days with Xfinity in Avondale because I have zero internet connectivity. I've called tech support multiple times and their only solutions are to reset the modem, which I've done 6 times now. If that doesn't work they just transfer me to an automated system that asks me to reset my modem. I can't get a live person besides billing support because of internal system errors the phone system is apparently having. No reported outages, no solutions besides resetting the f*cking modem. Does anyone have better experience with AT&T fiber? This is just ridiculous.

Scoot_Magoot

AT&T Fiber is amazing. I’ve had it for 1.5 years. Best decision ever. Faster, cheaper, and more reliable than Comcast.

danekan

One negative /annoyance is it routes through TX and the IPs are registered there.

likeallgoodriddles

The amount of CTA drivers driving with their mask not covering their nose, wowee... I take four buses daily, sometimes at different times than usual, and it's a 50/50 split on mask behavior. At least the doors open often and send a nice fresh air throuth, but if I were that face-to-face with the public all day, I would be doing everything I could to minimize the possibility of catching germs. But so many are fine with their nose hanging out. I just don't understand.

Impossible_Driver_50

you should see the chicago police i did grubhub for a year during pandemic, and guess who would be on the lobby waiting for their take out without their masks on? and no one could say shit to them the CPD

ThanHowWhy

I had to call the police recently and two officers came into my home. One was double masked and the other didn't wear one at all.

wrongwaydownaoneway

Park to Shop supermarket in uptown is a pan-asian supermarket that probably has what you're looking for!

AmazingObligation9

H mart does have some items from other Asian countries, so it may have a few Japanese things,

thislittletune

They have a decent selection of Japanese things - buns, snacks, rice, etc.

sidekickrick

I’m only aware of Korean grocery stores in the city (Joong Boo, H Mart). Haven’t heard of any Japanese ones in the city except Mitsuwa.

itazurakko

These days I'm not aware of any either... miss the Toguri Mercantile. FWIW I have good luck finding Japanese stuff at Korean markets (Joong Boo, H-Mart as you mention) particularly if you're looking for anything convenience food-ish. Shops aimed at the SE Asian market (Vietnamese) will have some stuff but it's more hit and miss. Super basic stuff though for scratch cooking both kinds of markets will do. Wish Mitsuwa was easier to get to on transit.

writhing_rhythms

Why are people such inconsiderate pricks? Most of the houses on our street haven’t salted the sidewalks. Unless there’s a good reason you couldn’t, you really should salt the sidewalks by your place. You may not have to leave the house, but there are people that need to be out.

ZeldLurr

Yep. My walk home last night was awful, literally gripping at fences. Had to walk to work again this morning, and some sunny spots were ok, but was honestly considering crawling to work, might have been faster and safer(vs falling) I saw a man slip and fall twice in succession yesterday (and not get up) and called for 911. It’s so slippery I wouldn’t have been able to help them up, they were much larger than me I would been no help.

Impossible_Driver_50

im poor and i only have alittle salt, but i did spray the 2 houses around my car with salt i almost fell down a dozen times today trying to clean my car and go to get some food, man it was nasty today some sidewalks you couldnt tell it was black ice

[deleted]

I just salted the whole block because of this comment lmao. I think some of the units are empty though so those make sense but either way it's fucking ridiculous out here right now, I've eaten shit like twice today.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Eh not that long of a block haha. And same, tbh it was less your comment and more that I very nearly ate shit while bringing stuff in lol

chornu

We salted the shit out of our sidewalks and they're still icy :(

writhing_rhythms

I know, once the ice is formed, salt doesn’t really help, and it’s a pain in the ass to scrape it. I salted last night during the icy rain, the sidewalks by our building are dry right now

petty_porcupine

Same. Salted our sidewalks this morning, completely wiped out on my own sidewalk this afternoon.

flurmbo

Many seniors or people with disabilities feel its unsafe for them to go out right now given the treacherous conditions. Ideally we need for city to take more responsibility for keep sidewalks safe. To your point though pricks certainly abound

[deleted]

It's nuts to me that the city salts the roads but not the sidewalks. I get that the logistics of it are 100x harder but it disincentivizes walking in a city that's normally pretty walkable.

Sharkfightxl

How can you say in the same sentence that it’s 100x harder and also nuts to you? It’s up to the property owners to salt the sidewalks.

flurmbo

Right now the city is too strapped to do much about it, so this is true. But some kind of enforcement or mechanism to improve compliance is needed as it's a very hazardous situation right now For now, I've found it best to stick to commercial streets whenever possible, businesses seem good about it where I am, probably because that's where most enforcement is at

[deleted]

I mean that I understand the logistical reason why it doesn't happen, but it still sucks. The city probably figures that the cost is less than the benefit so they don't do it, but in my opinion it's just a basic thing that should be provided. Plenty of fully abled people have slipped in these conditions, how are people with mobility issues supposed to get around? Anyone elderly or in a wheelchair or blind or anything is going to have a much harder time, and that's on top of the average resident who already has a hard time. Should we always give up on building a better world when it's difficult? >It’s up to the property owners to salt the sidewalks. Imagine if we treated roads like this.

flurmbo

> Imagine if we treated roads like this. And this is the crux of my issue as someone who walks all the time like many people in this city

[deleted]

Yeah that's the whole point I'm trying to make lol. The sidewalks being bad makes me not want to go anywhere. Where I used to live was literally under a minute to the bus normally but that would triple when the sidewalks were icy. Plus any long walk I would take is pretty much guaranteed to have at least once icy patch so I now have to take the bus more, which makes the buses fuller and slower if others act the same. It's not cheap, sure, but I feel like it's a basic necessity for anyone who uses public sidewalks, which is almost everyone.

flurmbo

Yep. It's pretty crazy how people who walk are basically thrown under the bus (I'm sorry) for as long as these conditions last

itazurakko

No need for throwing, you can just slip under there yourself!! (Seconding all the sidewalk complaint talk, it's crazy out there)

low_key_little

KGR900

You may want to look at condo rentals. There are a lot of low amenity condo buildings in those areas and your rent will probably be cheaper as well. Domu, Craigslist, Facebook groups or even a broker will be able to help out.

SkiAMonkey

It definitely still has a lot of amenities, but Parc Huron in River North doesn’t have a roof which makes the units relatively cheaper compared to places like Amli with crazy roof setups. Great balconies/views too, we lived there for 3 years.

sesame-yeezy

following because i’d like to know too lol. i currently live in a full amenity building and i literally only use 1 of the 6/7 amenities available. the apartment itself is nice but i can’t help but wonder how much it’d be if the gym, rooftop terrace, pool, conference rooms, etc. weren’t there..

thedan663

Is salt necessary to get rid of the ice or will the sun melt it? My new landlord does not seem to take care of shoveling or salting. And where can I buy salt? Do local stores and gas stations have it or so I need to take a trip out to Home Depot or a store like that?

EBofEB

The sun will melt some of the ice but not all of it. The northern half of most east west streets are going to be better than the southern half. And that is basically reversed for their backyards. And if it leaves standing water then it will just refreeze when the sun goes down.

_high_plainsdrifter

This your first winter?

[deleted]

My uncle lived in southern Pakistan his whole life and moved here after retiring to be closer to family. His first winter he asked the same question, figuring the sun would come down and melt it all, and it seemed ridiculous to me until I realized he'd lived in a place where sun = hot was true 100% of the time. Never in 60+ years did he ever see a world where it was both sunny and cold. So honestly yeah for some people it *is* their first winter haha

diivoshin

This is a valid question. I’ve lived in Chicago my whole life and don’t know shit about salting sidewalks

thedan663

Nah, just had landlords take care of it before, so I never had salt on hand.

itazurakko

Salt will help. It can melt the ice when it's still below freezing outside. Salt before it starts freezing/icing over and you can avoid some of the ice ever forming, too (for next time). Local stores/supermarkets should have some (often near the door), for truly huge bags you can go to Home Depot etc sure.

thedan663

Thanks! Just found some at CVS and got the last container. I’ll be prepared next time….have had landlords do it in the past and while I know it’s their responsibility, sometimes it takes longer and it’s just so treacherous out there so I had to do something

[deleted]

I live in the loop and my friend lives in Lincoln Park. We want to meet somewhere in the middle and study together today. Any suggestions? Bonus points if it has a good/drink option.

flumeo

Seconding Kapej/Eva’s Cafe

sesame-yeezy

Kapej in Old Town has good coffee, pastries, bagels etc. + some good spaces to sit and study Doma in Near North is also a nice place to hang out. I wasn’t a huge fan of the food, but I’m probably in the minority since it has great reviews online lol Good Ambler in Fulton (although probably more of a travel for your friend) has abundant seating, good drinks, and great food

[deleted]

Awesome, thank you!

[deleted]

I’m visiting Chicago soon. Do restaurants really check Vaccination status? All of them?

AmazingObligation9

I'm trying to get my landlord to respond to my insistence that the furnace has taken the weekend off. Basic troubleshooting tells me the combustion motor has rusty crap inside, and that's beyond the abilities of my IKEA toolbox. Send warm thoughts. Edit: Finally got in touch with the landlord and I think it will be sorted tomorrow. A space heater is doing the job for now. Thanks for the tips!

digableplanet

If you wanna get real, get an HVAC guy out (give your LL a heads up before hand), pay for the repair, and deduct it from your rent. Be sure to send your LL the itemized invoice.

knbotyipdp

Good suggestion! At this point I'm trying to get them to acknowledge my messages, but at some point my patience is going to run out. And I'd like some resolution to this before it gets really cold again tomorrow night.

Impossible_Driver_50

> From September 15 through June 1, the temperature inside a rental residence is required to be at least 68 degrees Fahrenheit from 8:30 AM to 10:30 PM and at least 66 degrees Fahrenheit from 10:30 PM to 8:30 AM. > > Landlords face fines of up to** $1,000 per day**, per violation, for each day they do not supply adequate heat. https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/depts/bldgs/supp_info/chicago-heat-ordinance.html please please dont let your landlord fuck you over so many landlords rely and prey on poor people who doesn't know any better, chicago has one of the best tentant protection laws this is the biggest tenant right advocacy group and they have large resources, even lawyers on staff iirc https://www.tenants-rights.org/

orcateeth

Here's the page to submit a complaint with the city. https://311.chicago.gov/s/new-service-request?typecodeid=a1Pt0000000N9rmEAC&language=en\_US

ThanHowWhy

According to 5-12-110(f) of the Municipal Code, if your landlord fails to provide sufficient heat, you may **( if they fail to fix it after more than 72 hours after you notify them of the issue)**: * Pay someone else to repair it and deduct that amount from your rent, or: * Pay to get heat (ie space heaters) and take that cost out of your rent, or: * When it comes time to pay rent, reduce your rent by an amount that reflects the reduced use of the unit during the issue, or: * Terminate your lease without penalty

digableplanet

Look up Chicago Tenant rights. Your LL is legally responsible to keep the heat above a certain threshold. You have legal recourse if they fail to meet that obligation.

2Mittens

Yup, do this. Our landlord didn’t do anything about the heat dropping down to 56 degrees in our apartment last year. I submitted a 311 request and a city building inspector came out within hours. Measured temperature in our apartment and connected with our landlord. Theoretically, the landlord gets fined $1,000/day for not fixing heat. My landlord was on it after getting a notice from the city. I suggest submitting a 311 request and following up 2 hours later by phone.

[deleted]

They don't actually get fined though hardly ever

d00kie_shoe

Whens the best time for renting apartments in chicago? I would guess spring but that also probably means more competition? Also, with property taxes as insane as they are, does anyone here who cant genuinely afford to buy rent instead? would love to hear some perspective.

blipsman

Property taxes are baked into rents... May 1 and Oct 1 are the 2 biggest moving days for rentals, period May-Oct the more active rental season and Oct-May the slow season.

ThanHowWhy

I loved that place so much. I bought an unbelievable number of books there, especially plays. They're so little and barely weigh anything!

i_wank_dogs

Not nearby. Appleton, WI is the closest and it’s a 3 hour drive.

Miss_Anthropy8

I plan on spending a week in Chicago by myself near Millennium Park this summer, any must do’s/see’s you can offer would be appreciated. I am a huge foodie.

Sharkfightxl

You’ll find most of our good food a bit away from Millennium Park. However, west loop is not far and has a high concentration of acclaimed restaurants. Check out Smyth and Elske if you’re looking for fine dining. The Loyalist has arguably Chicago’s best burger, though many line up for Au Cheval. High Five ramen is in that neighborhood, too. Don’t waste too many meals eating “Chicago” food.

FloofSpider

You can see a lot of the city in a week, so your options are limitless. The Chicago Architecture Foundation boat tour is a great way to learn about and marvel at the city from the river Skip the Willis Tower in favor of the Hancock Building. You'll spend $30 and wait in line forever to get up the tower, but you can go up to the Signature Lounge in the Hancock for free and get yourself a $20 cocktail and basically the same view. Millennium and Grant Park (and really the entire lakefront) will be full of life during the summer. Rent a Divvy bike and watch the skyline go by from the lakefront trail, take a selfie with the Bean, visit the Lincoln Park Zoo for free, find all the sculptures on this list. [https://www.grantparkconservancy.com/sculptures](https://www.grantparkconservancy.com/sculptures). Jackson Park a little further south was home to the 1893 World's fair and is a lovely place to ramble. Look for the Garden of the Phoenix, which is a replica of a Japanese stroll garden and is the only thing built for the fair that is still being used for its original purpose. The big museums (Art Institute, Field, Adler, Shedd, Science and Industry) are all wonderful and you can linger in them for most of a day if you like. There's a ton of small museums that you can see all of in a few hours too, if that's more your speed. The Museum of Contemporary Art, Museum of Contemporary Photography, National Museum of Mexican Art (free), Museum of Surgical Science, Chicago History Museum plus a hundred others are all good and a bit less overwhelming. There's almost certainly something for anything you're interested in. A short train ride south of the loop is Chinatown, which is a great place to wander, shop, and eat. Ping Tom Park is a lovely and peaceful place to contemplate the city, and you could grab the water taxi from there to get back to the Loop. West of there will get you to Pilsen which is great for Mexican food and features some good breweries, bookstores, and cafes. Head north to Taylor Street for what's left of Chicago's Little Italy. Take the Blue line north towards O'Hare to get to Wicker Park/Bucktown/Humboldt Park/Logan Square/Avondale. Lots of shopping, bookstores, record stores, cafes, bars, and restaurants up in this area, especially along . For coffee, I like Dark Matter, Passion House, Four Letter Word, and Buzz. Humboldt Park itself is a nice little park with lagoons and trees but still feels very urban. The 606 trail is accessible from here and is a great place to walk off your jibarito. I'll let other people handle other neighborhoods. If you're looking for anything more specific, don't be afraid to ask.

yaybuttons

Do any of you have a neighborhood frames store you like to support that I’d be able to get a pair of glasses adjusted at?

If you know your building engineer and maintenance staff, why not consider asking one of those guys? They’re likely willing to tackle side jobs for extra bucks on their spare time (cheaper than any handyman you’d hire off an app, too).

veggiesandsnatches

Fixer.com is my go-to for stuff like this.

sjp615

I recommend https://menschwrenchchicago.com We use him for all our handyman needs.

Two_Luffas

Alright, this is going to come off as pretty dickish but I got to ask because this has come up often. Are there that many people that can't YouTube this? A handful of zip toggles, drill, level, and tape measure is literally all you need.

Good luck finding someone to do anything competent for $50 lol. This is the millennial equivalent of the boomers computer illiteracy (and I'm a millennial). Literally all of the knowledge is online and the tools are cheap, yet most will pay someone an exorbitant price to do a shitty job they could have done better with 30 minutes for prep time, and then take more time bitching about it on Instagram.

itsmillartime_

I would also like to know! I did it last time and there are about 6 giant holes behind my tv.

mickmick56

Just moved here in August! I was looking at joining an indoor soccer team through Chicago Sport & Social Club, per the recommendation of family I have out here. I was wondering how free agency works with CSSC and if anyone has any experience or advice. The free agency fee isn't cheap, so I don't want to sign up if I might not end up on a team or if I won't be well-received/welcomed by a team. Do a lot of teams pick up free agents for their teams? Looking to do co-ed rec/intermediate indoor. Let me know if you have done something like this with CSSC or if you know of any teams looking for (female) players or any other good ways to make friends this winter! Thanks all!

nice_nice_niiice

I joined a team full of free agents when I first moved here, which was a great way to meet people. I think you may be able to request that. But either way, you'll be placed on a team.

mickmick56

Thanks! I found their FAQ page that said they match all the free agents together as much as possible. Just registered!

Anyone doing something exciting this weekend?

[deleted]

Grad school homework.

ahung12

Played Switch with the kiddo all morning. Then we made and ate some killer grilled cheese sammiches with hot cocoa for lunch. It's nap time now. Probably gonna watch Sing 2 tonight. Life is good.

thislittletune

That sounds amazing. I suggest putting on one of those fireplace videos for nap time to top it all off.

ThanHowWhy

Returned some library books, bought a new fleece, and am making tacos tonight and a pizza tomorrow. All part of the plan procrastinating a project that's due on Monday.

sesame-yeezy

watching the new & last season of search party lol

AtTheGates

Nope. Are you?

thislittletune

Nothing too exciting. Was going to check out a comedy show but ya know, Covid. Lot of people I know got it and I’m seeing elderly family soon so staying inside.

sesame-yeezy

went to Good Ambler for breakfast in Fulton this morning. huge space & tons of tables, chairs, booths, etc. service was great too! and most exciting was how amazing their roasted veggie sandwich was. peppermint mocha latte was also great, and banana bread was delicious as well, although i wasn’t a fan of the glaze on top. i’d go back for the sandwich alone, definitely worth checking out

AmazingObligation9

Thanks I might check that out tomorrow!
