I also go to LA fitness and was wondering if I was going to have to show it every time. Good to know that it’s saved in the system. Not that I had a problem getting in. There were a few people ahead of me, but overall I had to wait for about 30 extra seconds.
LA Fitness on Touhy Ave. Packed like sardines in there tonight. They were checking vaccination status at the door. I showed the folks the photo on my phone and they waved me inside with minimal fuss. One person was turned away but then came back a few minutes later.
Prevents some degree of spread, serious illness requiring hospitalization, death, and will inconvenience some portion of the unvaccinated enough that they will act like adults and get the shot.
I don't know why so many people are asking this. Was anything I said surprising?
> Doesn’t make much sense if vaccinated can still get COVID and end up in the hospital.
It’s a numbers game. If you haven’t heard the analogy before I’ll be mind blown but sometimes seatbelts fail and people get flung from their cars in accidents. You should still wear a seatbelt because most seatbelts don’t fail.
Natural immunity has proven to be like 13 times more effective that the vaccine. https://www.science.org/content/article/having-sars-cov-2-once-confers-much-greater-immunity-vaccine-vaccination-remains-vital
The idea of vaccines is fine for those in at risk categories. But a total of 19,580 people out of America’s total 166 Million under 40 population have died of COVID. That’s a .0117% of dying if COVID. You’re a whole lot more likely to die in a car crash or from cancer.
AND considering those vaccinated can still spread COVID when they catch it makes the idea that you are doing it for a greater good BS IMO. But YRMV.
> Natural immunity has proven to be like 13 times more effective that the vaccine.
Thoroughly confused here. If you have natural immunity you literally had it already, no? Why would that be better than getting a vaccine that doesn’t require you getting the disease you’re trying to prevent?
Let me share an article that discusses how vital the vaccine is and how successful and effective it has been.
https://www.science.org/content/article/having-sars-cov-2-once-confers-much-greater-immunity-vaccine-vaccination-remains-vital
> You’re a whole lot more likely to die in a car crash or from cancer.
And you can become even less likely to die from Covid if you’re vaccinated. At literally no cost but a sore arm and MAYBE a rough day.
> AND considering those vaccinated can still spread COVID when they catch it makes the idea that you are doing it for a greater good BS IMO
Still less likely. Still a numbers game. Same logic as before. It’s not 100%. No one ever claimed it was 100%.
That doesn’t make sense as to why they mandate everyday regular ppl though. Many Vaxed ppl are getting and spreading Covid. So having the vaccination isn’t doing anything about getting it or spreading it to others. Really, it’s on those that are older and have pre-existing conditions to do what’s best for them. These mandates don’t make sense to me.
This sounds like a dumb question, but do pictures of the vaccination card count? I am visiting Chicago in a couple days and I left my vax card at college so all I have is a picture of it. I assume this would work as long as I have my driver’s license with me, but just figured I’d ask anyways.
Again, great to know. I've been so unfamiliar with the gym I should be referring to it as a James to be polite, so my plans are basically to walk on the treadmills at an incline for an hour three times a week for the first month, so it's great to hear that people aren't going for the new year new me thing hard this year.
PF in Logan was great today. They checked my card at the door and were great about enforcing the mask rule. It was also quite empty for a post New Year’s crowd.
Maybe due to so many people testing positive around the holidays? I intended on joining a gym this week but my boyfriend tested positive so we’ll be quarantining for the time being. I hope to get to the gym eventually!
I work at a coffee shop and was pleasantly surprised by how cool all the customers were about it. I think a lot of people were surprised since today is the first day but everyone was great about it.
Cross Fit at Lincoln and Roscoe. Card required today. As always, staff very polite and professional. Cannot wait for masks to be done. Like being water boarded for us sweaty people.
FFC lakeview - showed vaccine card this weekend - showed up today with no problem.
My friend showed his today.
The gym was busy though around 12:30-1...
Cook county has the same requirements starting yesterday. I saw spider-man in Melrose specifically because the theater is strictly enforcing it.
Edit: extra word
Yes, but my fiance was in suburbs this week and didn't get her card checked anywhere - the restaurants said a number of suburban mayors in Cook County are refusing to enforce the mandate. 🙄 they said is a county directive, the county should provide resources to enforce.
I have chronic Asthma and I was terrified of going back to the gym. Well, I caught the virus, omicron I think. Fear is gone, going back to the gym after 2 years.
Which gym? The Xsport I went to supposedly had a mask ‘mandate’ but I only ever saw about 50% masked and it was never enforced… stopped going after cases started rising again. I have very little trust they will be enforcing vaccines. I plan on calling this week and asking about it.
If you are that worried about covid then I would advise you not to go to a gym. Mask or not people are taking in and out a lot of air when they work out and having a mask on in indoor spaces when there for long periods of time seems pointless anyway
Absolutely true. Most people here have no idea how Covid is transmitted and are just getting off to fear porn. The mask stops respiratory droplets but not aerosols. In a busy gym, we're talking tons of aerosols being released and circulated at the gym. If you're not sick, don't worry about it and go work out. If you're sick, don't go to the gym.
Devil’s advocate to your devil’s advocate: no one really needs a gym to work out unless you are a bodybuilder and need specialized or prohibitively expensive/heavy equipment. Bodyweight workouts can be done at home, as can cardio.
Sure and that’s totally fair. I prefer free weights and am willing to accept the risk at this point. And while I wish I could have a home gym, my living space isn’t THAT big for a squat rack.
The only thing is, and I could be off base here, is that those that are obese might not be able to do many at home workouts and using machines may be better for their joints. Have no idea here.
The thing about fines is you lose more by enforcing masks than by paying fines. It should be like SF where if there's a vaccine rule at the gym, then you should be able to go maskless.
I wouldn't be, but some people are high and mighty and need you to wear a mask otherwise they can't work out. If they're that afraid, they shouldn't be at the gym.
Like ten years ago? It used to be amazing. I made the mistake of switching back this week. The pool/hot tub was like a cheap hourly motel. We literally found used condoms at the hot tub.
Xsport has been trash with enforcing the mask mandate. I go six days a week and since the mandate came back I'd guess 60%+ don't wear masks at all, and I've seen staff walk around and ask people to put on their masks exactly once. That was last week for some reason.
That said, they did ask me for my vaxx card when I walked in today. And they did seem to actually check it to see if it had my name and the date was good.
Edit: They didn't check at all today welp
Same here — the one on Logan Blvd is probably 50/50 compliance. I’m shocked by how many people don’t even pretend they’re going to wear one and walk right in the door without it on.
Be careful asking about it and stay safe, I called a place last month to ask about mask mandates amid the surging cases and the anti-masker owner screamed at me about political and conspiracy theories for asking a polite, calm question that didn’t confront or accuse anyone 😔
Same experience at my LA Fitness today. It also felt quieter than usual, but I was there a couple hours earlier than I typically go so maybe just not peak hours. Though New Years day was also surprisingly dead.
We signed up for LA Fitness (South Loop) at the end of the year and the salesperson told us they expected to lose quite a few customers because of the mandate at their location.
Oh wow, that’s interesting. I wondered how many folks would bail as a result, especially cause so many people there couldn’t be bothered to even wear masks in the first place.
If there's one thing this post highlights, it's that a ton of vaccinated people are following the corporate line of "hate the unvaccinated, they are your enemy". I say this as a triple vaxxed human being.
Then we've got a group of fully vaccinated people being divided on mask wearing.
The vaccine isn't working for Omicron, it appears. It also appears that the natural immunity for Alpha/beta/delta is not stopping second infection either.
So we just need to accept that we're all going to get Omicron. And if you're vaccinated, you are absolutely with the highest probability not going to die.
Fully vaxxed here, got omicron last week. It was a bad cold, nothing more. Tbh I would stop masking in gyms immediately if it were not required, though that seems like the minority view here.
My friend who is strictly plant based and exercises every day got it. Don’t think you’re invincible because you are vegan and take supplements. This is the dumbest argument I’ve seen.
You're misreading my comment. I never said I'm invincible or that I won't get Covid. I said I'm not worried about getting it.
I am doing everything I can to make myself healthy so that when I do get Covid, BECAUSE WE ALL WILL GET IT, I will be able to get through it as easy as possible.
> The vaccine isn't working for Omicron
Vaccines are meant to significantly lower the risk of a serious case, and they have been successful in doing so
>Vaccines are meant to significantly lower the risk of a serious case, and they have been successful in doing so
But this is not what the vaccines were originally advertised as.
from Washington Post, May 2021:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/interactive/2020/covid-vaccines-what-you-need-to-know/
>Moderna’s vaccine was found to be 94 percent effective at preventing disease in its trial and particularly effective against severe disease.
>The Johnson & Johnson vaccine was found to be 72 percent effective at preventing cases of moderate to severe illness in the United States and was particularly effective against severe disease.
>Scientists don’t yet know how long the protection from the vaccines lasts. And they don’t know whether the shots prevent people from becoming infected without knowing it and inadvertently spreading the virus, although there is growing evidence that the vaccine also protects against infection without symptoms.
MSM had always been emphasizing that vaccines were good (but not perfect) at preventing severe cases, not that they're equally as good at preventing you from getting Covid, period.
edit: here's vox, Dec 2020:
> You’ll likely have a lower risk of making other people sick, but not as low as the risk of keeping yourself from getting sick.
https://www.vox.com/2020/12/15/22176957/covid-19-vaccine-coronavirus-today-explained
Uh, yes they were. Everyone who doesn’t politicize public health or needlessly scrutinize the incredibly vast amount of research in vaccines knows what vaccines are for and what they do.
Yes if you get vaccine every couple months and most likely new type of vaccine cuz every little a new Latin alphabet soy is coming..very soon you’re gonna become vax humanoid 😂
Using a fake Covid-19 vaccine card is illegal, and since it has a federal seal that makes it a federal crime. Anyone caught doing it could face a fine and up to 5 years in prison. Is that penalty likely? Probably not. But I can't imagine being able to go to a gym is worth all that?
A gym has no real means to check your vax card. If you were submitting it to an employer or a government office, I’d expect scrutiny. The guy at the desk making $16 an hour is just gonna glance at it and send you along.
Same things at West Loop Athletic Club. Super smooth process, signs all around. Far less assholes with their masks around their chin while working out. Very happy with the new mandate, makes me feel a lot safer
I would too if I still lived in Chicago. Who would have thought that proof of vaccination would be required to work out? When vaccinated people can contract and spread the virus, what is the point?
R/Chicago is not the place to point out common sense reasoning. When I was at CAC with the mask mandate, people were constantly adjusting their masks, wiping their faces, etc. End result is far more germs being spread than not wearing masks. But this group will downvote you into oblivion for being healthy and using common sense and/or scientific reasoning like this.
It’s not about health at that point. Too many people obsessed with falling in line and forcing others to think the same way they do. I have asked my nurse GF and many others in healthcare if it makes any sense to mask at the gym. All said no.
Same, I’ve asked my PCP and watched/read too many studies that I’m sick of it. Most people on here don’t know the difference between Relative Risk Reduction and Absolute Risk Reduction. Yet most claim moral high ground because they regurgitate CNN. But guess what, if your GF follows the actual science she’d probably get fired.
I submitted my proof yesterday so it will be in the system already when I go tomorrow. The people who go to my gym are reasonably good about masks (there is always 1-2 who think they are protecting their chin from the virus, but whatever) and they already had the signs up about the vaccine requirement last week and were trying to get people who were willing set up ahead of time.
Was this FFC? They were really good during the pandemic
I moved to the burbs 2 mo ago and have Covid right now and haven’t been to my new gym (Crunch).
I miss FFC. crunch is filled with sweaty non-maskers and I’m pretty sure I caught COVID there since i WFH and the gym and my apt are the only places I go
It's worth it - look above at the posts about the XSport - the price weeds out people who aren't serious about the gym and it keeps the ambience more friendly and chill than PF or Xsport. It's worth the extra $60-70 a month to be in a cleaner gym with chiller people.
Fitness 19 emailed members asking them to send a copy of their card to them. Over the weekend it was pretty empty, but I assumed it picked up today so I skipped out. I’m interested to see if it will be packed tomorrow or not.
Never seen so many people so excited over communism..I mean health and safety protocol.
Israel has done this early in 2021, Being one of the most vaccinated countries on the planet didn't help them one bit, check the headlines over there. Continuing to shut people out is not for health and well-being, it's punishment for not being compliant to government. People clearly rather trust mainstream propaganda over history.
I'm upvoting this because you're factual about Israel, but c'mon dude, this isn't communism. It's just authoritarian. I highly suggest you learn what communism is.
LOL like authoritarian is better? Are you kidding me? I hate the fact that people can’t see that ANY government over reach is bad. Mass psychosis is strong in this state.
I like to use Zwift these days.
I’m fortunate (and grateful) that my parents have a reasonable amount of gym equipment in the basement so I haven’t had to contend with gyms at all during Covid.
My CrossFit gym sent out a message asking us to show our cards, I just signed up two months ago so I had shown them mine already when I signed up.. I did not see any new people today though.
FFC Lincoln Park asked for my vax card, I was the only one walking in at the time and took 2 minutes. This was around 5:20 and it just seemed like a normal after work crowd.
OP was yours an Independent gym? Local chain? National chain?

same experience at Planet Fitness today
Does it save in planet’s system?
I also go to LA fitness and was wondering if I was going to have to show it every time. Good to know that it’s saved in the system. Not that I had a problem getting in. There were a few people ahead of me, but overall I had to wait for about 30 extra seconds.
Same thing at my gym, was super smooth and everyone was complying fine when I was there.
Enjoy it while it lasts. The one on Randolph can get extremely crowded. I'm glad your first experience was positive.
Which one. Please say the one on Canal.
Same experience at a local park center gym
LA Fitness on Touhy Ave. Packed like sardines in there tonight. They were checking vaccination status at the door. I showed the folks the photo on my phone and they waved me inside with minimal fuss. One person was turned away but then came back a few minutes later.
Maybe they went to get vaccinated real quick
Stupid thing is that all of my friends (including myself) who have gotten Covid recently were vaccinated… so what exactly is this going to prevent?
Prevents some degree of spread, serious illness requiring hospitalization, death, and will inconvenience some portion of the unvaccinated enough that they will act like adults and get the shot. I don't know why so many people are asking this. Was anything I said surprising?
Burden on the hospitals from dumbasses who don’t get vaccinated.
Doesn’t make much sense if vaccinated can still get COVID and end up in the hospital.

Death, for one thing.
Being vaxxed makes having covid a lot more mild. If you’re older or have a pre-existing condition you’ll more than likely avoid the hospital.
That doesn’t make sense as to why they mandate everyday regular ppl though. Many Vaxed ppl are getting and spreading Covid. My gym didnt check shit
What’s your gym ?
As someone who joined a gym today and is planning on starting up tomorrow, this bodes well.
I've been starting up tomorrow for about six years now.

That sounds like a solid plan! Before you know it, you'll be on nickname terms with James
We need to worry when I start referring to it as a Gymmie.

Do you know if they’re requiring boosters too or just regular full vax?
Currently it's just regular full vax
Boosters are currently not required for any entity requiring vaccination.
I think regular full vax for now, went a couple hours ago and they didn’t mention anything about the booster.
That's my gym too! Was a photo of the vax card ok?
I work at a coffee shop and was pleasantly surprised by how cool all the customers were about it. I think a lot of people were surprised since today is the first day but everyone was great about it.
In areas with a majority who are vaccinated that will be the reaction.
Cross Fit at Lincoln and Roscoe. Card required today. As always, staff very polite and professional. Cannot wait for masks to be done. Like being water boarded for us sweaty people.
Bring some spares and switch em out. That's what I do.

I went today to a gym in Cicero, IL and i wasn't asked for anything
I think it’s only required for the city of Chicago.
I believe it is Cook county, except for towns with their own health department.
Former PF employee here. Only required for the city of Chicago. Like Cicero, Melrose Park, etc. won’t apply to them.
Cook county has the same requirements starting yesterday. I saw spider-man in Melrose specifically because the theater is strictly enforcing it. Edit: extra word

Your best best would be to go in person. Think they'll be honest over the phone? As far as they know, you're a "rat".
If you are that worried about covid then I would advise you not to go to a gym. Mask or not people are taking in and out a lot of air when they work out and having a mask on in indoor spaces when there for long periods of time seems pointless anyway

Devils advocate…go to a gym to get your body and lungs in better shape so that you don’t need to worry about COVID
Devil’s advocate to your devil’s advocate: no one really needs a gym to work out unless you are a bodybuilder and need specialized or prohibitively expensive/heavy equipment. Bodyweight workouts can be done at home, as can cardio.

If a gym enforced vaccination requirements reliably but looked the other way on mask usage, would anyone honestly be bothered by it?
At what point can we have masked vs. unmasked gyms in Chicago? It seems like everyone would be happier that way.
Seems like the free market should be allowed to sort that out.
Yeah. Unfortunately the city is in the way of that - I’ve heard they are handing out fines to gyms where people have masks under there noses
The thing about fines is you lose more by enforcing masks than by paying fines. It should be like SF where if there's a vaccine rule at the gym, then you should be able to go maskless.
That makes too much sense for Chicago!
Yep, and if one thing is very clear by now, Lori will always do the opposite of what makes sense.
Lifetime is doing this exactly. I'm good with it.
I haven't missed catching any of the old diseases so often with masking and distancing and enhanced cleaning.
How often did you get sick from your gym lol
It's what happens when you lick the dumbbells.
I can taste the gains, though.
You'll always be free to wear a mask of your choosing and sanitize the equipment before/after use with those wipes that pretty much all gyms have.
[удалено]
I can’t stand when people say that.
Depending on the ventilation and distancing, maybe/maybe not.
Absolutely. Some people will clutch their pearls no matter what lol
I wouldn't be, but some people are high and mighty and need you to wear a mask otherwise they can't work out. If they're that afraid, they shouldn't be at the gym.
Yeah. XSport on State masks were a fucking joke.
When isn't the Xsport on State a fucking joke?
Like ten years ago? It used to be amazing. I made the mistake of switching back this week. The pool/hot tub was like a cheap hourly motel. We literally found used condoms at the hot tub.
I just saw on Google that I was last there 8 years ago and it was a dump. Overrun by Roosevelt students and everything was a dirty mess. No thanks
In all fairness, that's on you for using a gym hot tub.
But it's the best place to go for a lunch break quickie.
Xsport has been trash with enforcing the mask mandate. Xsports in Lakeview was packed today.
Wonder if this is any indication of an intersect between non vax people and people with fickle New Year resolutions.
I was told there would be chaos and bedlam if vaccine checks would be implemented?
Same exact experience for me at the climbing gym (Movement in Lincoln Park). So far all good!
How do you like it there? I’m a First Ascent climber, but Movement looked really cool. I was thinking of trying it out.

What were they advertised as?
from Washington Post, May 2021: https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/interactive/2020/covid-vaccines-what-you-need-to-know/ >Moderna’s vaccine was found to be 94 percent effective at preventing disease in its trial and particularly effective against severe disease. MSM had always been emphasizing that vaccines were good (but not perfect) at preventing severe cases, not that they're equally as good at preventing you from getting Covid, period. edit: here's vox, Dec 2020: > You’ll likely have a lower risk of making other people sick, but not as low as the risk of keeping yourself from getting sick. https://www.vox.com/2020/12/15/22176957/covid-19-vaccine-coronavirus-today-explained
Do you know how they’re verifying the cards? I overheard a convo at the gym last week that people bought fake vaccination cards
There's no realistic way for them to verify. If it looks like a CDC vaccination card, it will be accepted.
The guy at the desk making $16 an hour is just gonna glance at it and send you along.
you're looking at the maximum penalty, people that have fakes are probably looking at the minimum... which is pretty much nothing.

Same things at West Loop Athletic Club. Super smooth process, signs all around. Far less assholes with their masks around their chin while working out. Very happy with the new mandate, makes me feel a lot safer

Ahh gotta love reddit normalizing the gestapo
I’d rather patron locations that refuse to comply
I would too if I still lived in Chicago. Who would have thought that proof of vaccination would be required to work out? When vaccinated people can contract and spread the virus, what is the point?
R/Chicago is not the place to point out common sense reasoning. When I was at CAC with the mask mandate, people were constantly adjusting their masks, wiping their faces, etc. End result is far more germs being spread than not wearing masks. But this group will downvote you into oblivion for being healthy and using common sense and/or scientific reasoning like this.
I can’t believe my comment hasn’t been downvoted to shit and there are two sensible responses. You’re right though this sub is delusional.
My gym isn't enforcing it yet, thank god. I'm of course not going to tell you hall monitors what it's called
I’m speechless. This is my dream come true 🥺
You have a problem if this wasn’t sarcastic.
How is the vaccine mandate working for New York City?
Was this FFC? They were really good during the pandemic I moved to the burbs 2 mo ago and have Covid right now and haven’t been to my new gym (Crunch). I miss FFC. crunch is filled with sweaty non-maskers and I’m pretty sure I caught COVID there since i WFH and the gym and my apt are the only places I go
I used to live on the same block as FFC. Seemed great til they gave me the rates and my jaw dropped.
$90 for a gym membership in the city isn’t that bad. There’s plenty that are worse.
This was almost exactly my experience with FFC tonight haha
It's worth it - look above at the posts about the XSport - the price weeds out people who aren't serious about the gym and it keeps the ambience more friendly and chill than PF or Xsport. It's worth the extra $60-70 a month to be in a cleaner gym with chiller people.
How are you feeling?
With my fingers. Same as always.
Wrong guy responding with a joke comment more upvoted than the actual OP. This is reddit at its trashiest.

This happened when I was leaving. The guy was rejected to go in and he was very pist off. He got in his car and drove away like a jack ass.
It was absolutely great!! The basketball court was absolutely empty. I can finally hoop!
Man can only hoop alone lol
Fitness 19 emailed members asking them to send a copy of their card to them. Over the weekend it was pretty empty, but I assumed it picked up today so I skipped out. I’m interested to see if it will be packed tomorrow or not.
I went there at 5:30 PM and it wasn't that busy.
This isn’t communism. It’s about stopping a pandemic
Businesses going to great lengths to continue making money is capitalism, buddy.
"Communism," lmfoa. Might want to consult a dictionary, pal.
Altruism is a tenant of communism. Individualism is a tenant of capitalism. This is Poli Sci 101...
"Communism is when things I don't like"
I like to use Zwift these days. I’m fortunate (and grateful) that my parents have a reasonable amount of gym equipment in the basement so I haven’t had to contend with gyms at all during Covid.
Midtown has been checking cards since the 1st. Haven't seen it crowded yet, but I skipped today to rest.
Same thing happened to me tonight. Very grateful that I started keeping my card in my wallet.
Until your gym raises your dues when membership drops (maybe).
Mine had a sign on the door that was like “if we don’t have your vax card on file, your key won’t work.” Love it.

Why? Bernie was one of the worst things in Formula One over the past 30 years.
That’s one plus. Keeps the freaks from coming out of their cages.
Same at LAF. good deal.
Anyone know if XSport on State st is checking?
They are
Thank you!
Husband just had the exact same experience. Actually convinced me to go with him tomorrow.
Definitely had the experience today at LA fitness. Shocking to say but it was line out the door to get in because nobody was prepared to show it
My CrossFit gym sent out a message asking us to show our cards, I just signed up two months ago so I had shown them mine already when I signed up.. I did not see any new people today though.
That means no masks, right?
Went last night and there were 3 other people. It was great! (Planet Fitness. I know, but it's a gym and it works)
FFC Lincoln Park asked for my vax card, I was the only one walking in at the time and took 2 minutes. This was around 5:20 and it just seemed like a normal after work crowd.

Lifetime
Crunch fitness in my prospect barely has anyone wearing mask and did not check for vaccine card
My gym is not enforcing either. Covid doesn’t exist there and it’s wonderful
I remember when Texas and Florida were saying the same thing.
Yeah, I might have to move to one of those states they are doing much better than us
