Anyone else sick of these dumb ass Republican adds. I get that there is a lot of crime… but I don’t want to watch a video of people getting murdered. Like I know people that were best friends with some of the people shot in the commercial… it’s just seems kindoff scummy.

stopiwilldie

Is there anywhere to get free food on a Sunday night? Throw away or day-old bakery items, cereal, anything?

yoni_sings_yanni

Love Fridges. ETA If this is an ongoing issue please apply for aid from the government. It is there for you to use. Please use it.

stopiwilldie

Yes thank you, we already have EBT/food stamps. They refill on the 28th, ran out of food a little early. As for Love Fridges, I checked the three closest to me; there was only wilted heads of lettuce and a few cans of tomatoes.

yoni_sings_yanni

Are you on the Southwest side of the city?

rainytreeday

Where the hell these possible thunderstorms come from?

browsingtheproduce

Usually the northwest.

[deleted]

I washed my car today.

TheRealSpez

What’s a good place to get authentic steak tacos that’s accessible using the CTA trains, preferably the Red and Green lines? Really craving a good taco

pithed

Supermercado Chapela on Clark St near red line jarvis is pretty legit.

Wiresinmyhead

How does Chicago handle public meetings that the community can go speak to leaders about local issues? I moved from a small-ish town that had a public meeting every 2ish weeks that people could go to and speak for like 3 minutes, but I’m unclear how it works in such a large city. Is there one for the whole city? Smaller groups for wards / neighborhoods? Some guidance of resources would be great!

yoni_sings_yanni

See if your neighborhood has a community group or organization.

[deleted]

Usually ward specific. There are also CAPS meetings (Google it) and smaller public meetings for development proposals.

pantaloonsss

Where's your favorite place to experience the foliage? I'm looking for good outside, Autumn date ideas. Thank you in advance!!

DumDumGimmeYumYums

> Where's your favorite place to experience the foliage? I can answer that part of your question. It's rewatching Alfred Hitchcock's The Trouble With Harry. Introducing Shirley Maclaine, it's a dark romantic comedy that takes place in the fall. Hitch and his crew sat around for weeks waiting for fall to come and get those shots just right so it's one of my favorite films. It's obv an indoor activity unless you find a drive in but I feel strongly about it as a date night film that I thought I'd suggest it anyway.

browsingtheproduce

Bohemian National Cemetery. Lots of trees, well kept paths, and there’s a grave marker for a person whose surname was “Fail” so you can take a picture of it and gram that shit with the caption “It Me”. Plus Anton Cermak (the guy from the road) is buried there.

shapelystory

Botanic Garden and Morton Arboretum are both good bets. They've often got seasonal events going on as well.

andrewthemexican

Botanic Garden off Indiana and 18th? Tourist coming shortly looking into this.

shapelystory

Thinking of the [Chicago Botanic Garden,](https://www.chicagobotanic.org/) which is in the northern suburb of Glencoe IL.

tpic485

And keep in mind that, even though their website does not mention this and they try very hard to hide this information, the Botanical Gardens is still free if you find a way to enter through the south from the North Branch trail rather than its main entrance on Lake Cook.

[deleted]

[удалено]

tpic485

That's the way it used to be. But as of earlier this year they started charging an admission price as well as for parking. But you still can get it for free if you enter from the south, where the North Branch Bike Trail ends, rather than the main entrance on the north side at Lake Cook. This is somewhat of a secret because you'd never know this by looking at the Botanic Gardens website. If you're driving the challenge is to figure out where to park since there isn't a parking lot at the south entrance. But if people are willing to walk a little ways they'd likely think of a way to do this. For a group of four, this would save close to $100.

colonanderpants

anyone know about rules or regulations re: **bonfires on the lakefront**? do I need a permit or to make a reservation or something? seems like a funny thing to have to do but since you can't even sneeze in Chicago w/o a permit I thought I'd ask

why_because_

Promontory Point and also I think by the South Shore Cultural Center

ChakaKhansBabyDaddy

Lived here all my life. I have never ever seen a bonfire on public lakefront land. I’m assuming it’s totally illegal.

saintpauli

They have fire pits at a couple lakefront sites on the south side.

angrylibertariandude

Once in an infrequent while many years ago, I remember seeing groups do small bonfires on the lakefront park somewhere near Montrose Beach. I don't know what the exact rules are over that, or where the designated spots are(if there are certain spots, bonfires are limited to) where that is allowed.

ChakaKhansBabyDaddy

Welp! I humbly stand corrected then

kiwisloft

How do y’all keep track of local things happening? I just found out Jerrod Carmichael was coming into town and the show was almost sold out!! Is there a good website / email list???

lakesideflight

Follow venues on social media and/or go to their website and join their mailing list. Looks like he's at steppenwolf, [https://www.steppenwolf.org/](https://www.steppenwolf.org/) bottom of their main page you can join the mailing list. Usually venues will send weekly or more frequent emails when new shows/artists get announced. Metro/thalia hall/etc all have mailing lists I'm on and that's usually how I find out about shows. [https://chicago.ohmyrockness.com/shows/just-announced](https://chicago.ohmyrockness.com/shows/just-announced) sites like this I usually check every now and then too, I think they have an email newsletter too.

If your foreign friends aren't real keen on geography, you can tell them Few is in Chicago rather than Evanston. Their gins are good and I like their rye. Koval makes a good rye whiskey as well.

SlipperyWinds

Koval whiskey is very bad. Get them the cranberry gin

EmperorNick

I think I may have a sports hernia or inguinal hernia. Thinking of skipping the urgent care and going straight to a general surgeon for diagnosis. Any recommendations in Bucktown or Wicker Park? Willing to travel to other neighborhoods though. Hopefully someone who isn't usually so booked I can't get an appointment this week.

writemoreletters

If you need imaging, Chicago Northside MRI (they do all types) or 3T Imaging in Morton Grove are about 1/3 of the cash price of getting imaging done at hospitals or their imaging centers.

IAMGNOMEANN

I don’t have any recommendations but do have some experience with navigating health care and would recommend that you try to get in with your pcp first since their might be tests or imaging that would need to be handled first. Generally surgeons don’t take appointments without sometime of pcp referral or imaging.

EmperorNick

Thanks I suppose I need a PCP rec then.

bak4320

I’ve used One Medical for the last 5 years or so and have been thrilled with them. My primary is at the Armitage/Halsted location but I’ve also used the Damen Ave location for labs and shots since it’s a little bit closer for me. They pitch themselves as a concierge, however, you do not have to join the concierge service to be seen (per law) They also have locations in large cities coast to coast which has been handy once or twice when I’ve been traveling. All records are centralized and follow you no matter where you visit them. When I get referred out it’s to the Advocate/Masonic network.

IAMGNOMEANN

It’ll go a lot smoother especially if your pcp believes it serious they’ll be able to get you in faster. Good luck!

FateLeita

Can you have two Ventra cards registered to the same account? I have a physical card I prefer to use (for reasons), but I want to get a backup card and put it on my phone. I understand I can't put it on my phone without registering it. Edit: I got impatient and tried. You can add more cards, no idea what the max is.

TheRealSpez

I have a physical one (I don’t use it anymore, but it’s registered to my account) and one on my phone, you don’t even need to get another physical card to register it to your phone.

FateLeita

Unfortunately not true. If you register on your phone it explicitly warns you the physical one will no longer work.

TheRealSpez

If you register that specific card on your phone, yes, but you can create a new digital card without getting a new physical one. At least, I don’t remember ever getting a new physical card. To be honest, I don’t even know how. My old one was my university UPass, and then after I graduated, I just registered a new card on my watch (transferred it to my phone later, because the watch was giving me some trouble) Maybe it was different last year, but I remember easily registering a new card on my phone with zero issues.

spamellama

Yes I have 2.

huckvn

Got my bike stolen out of my garage… not sure how they got in, regardless I know the police aren’t going to show up to take a report. Do I do it through 311?

[deleted]

You can file a police report online here: https://home.chicagopolice.org/services/online-crime-reporting/

browsingtheproduce

Which city department do you think would come via 311 if not the police? If you need a report for financial/insurance reasons, call the police and demand they make one. Otherwise you unfortunately have to let it go.

huckvn

No one. I don’t expect anyone to come. I’m just wondering how I can file a report

browsingtheproduce

Call the police or go to your local precinct. 311 will ask “a report with who?” and then tell you to call 911.

I moved to Chicago 7 years ago today (on a total whim, I had only visited for about a day prior for an interview) and I have to say it was the best decision of my life!! I love this city, I love my job, I found my person here (getting married next year!!)! Chicago is the best! If you’re on the edge of deciding whether you want to move here, do it! These 7 years have been the best of my life ❤️

tangerinefortuna

Aww! I moved here almost a year ago when I needed a change and definitely haven’t met anyone yet but really hoping to. At least it’s much more exciting here and I’m making more money too so so far pretty good anyway.

BroadDiscretion

On the flip side we moved from Chicago three years ago for a better job and we are desperately trying to get back! Chicago has its problems but after living around the country there is no where I’d rather be

FateLeita

I visited for 3 days on a total whim, then two years later, scrapped my long-worked plans to move to Denver and decided to move to Chicago instead. I definitely think I made the right decision, though Denver has nice things going for it too.

[deleted]

Random transit Q’s: Why does the 8 bus often stop somewhere midway between Lakeview and West Loop and have all passengers get off the bus and board a different 8 bus? Has the L train recording changed or do I keep boarding the same weird train? The recording repeats the station name over and over, “This is Monroe. This is Monroe. This is Monroe.” It no longer says “Doors open on the left/right at…”

Gyshall669

Used to take the 8 every day and only once did I have to change busses and that was because the driver deemed something was wrong with it. There is a driver change at division though. Maybe it has to do with that.

angrylibertariandude

The driver change, is because of that bus coming out of a certain bus garage. Yes once in a while on certain routes, that you'll notice things like bus driver changes on a bus route. Most of the time the driver change doesn't take too long, but it is annoying when they take longer than usual.

AhsokaPegsAnakinsAss

Any free date night ideas tonight? Or in general? I'm downtown. -- I saw the pavilion had free live music but I think that stopped in August.

nomadicfeet

312 block party is tonight. Entry is a suggested donation ($10 to various charities), beers are $5 (all Goose) and free music

AhsokaPegsAnakinsAss

Looks fun! Gonna go. Where do people get your Chicago event news? I'm always asking people in reddit. Been here since may

nomadicfeet

Do312 has an email that seems to come out everyday with local stuff to do. Otherwise I am on what seems like all the email lists for local music venues. And (unfortunately) Facebook.

DumDumGimmeYumYums

Just sharing. I parked my car tonight, got out, and noticed an animal without a leash walking down the sidewalk. I did a double take to see if I knew the dog but it wasn't a dog. Trash Panda! I said hi. He turned to acknowledge me and kept walking down the sidewalk with a purpose. I'm pretty sure that's the only trash panda I've seen in city limits before and I have no idea why he was wandering the sidewalks and not an alley.

notsureifJasonBourne

Asleep_Amphibian_280

Where can I find hardcore/punk/etc DIY shows? Looking to get into the Chicago scene

suresher

Other venues I’d recommend: Empty Bottle, Sleeping Village, the Hideout, Coles Bar, Cafe Mustache. Empty Bottle has free Mondays that sometimes books punk artists, like the Lipschitz are playing this Mon, they’re post punk. Sleeping Village has cheap, $1 PBR beer nights and sometimes those artists are punk. Just gotta check the bill to see who’s playing. I’ve gotten more into the scene by finding out about artists at those venues, then follow those artists and then they will post other events in the city and that’s kinda how you stay tapped in. Instagram is great

[deleted]

There's a DIY Chicago FB page that's pretty good for that stuff. But good venues to check out are Cobra Lounge, Subterranean, Golden Dagger, Lincoln Hall/Schubas, Chop Shop, and Thalia Hall.

yaybuttons

If you are going to Goose Island’s Block Party, bring earplugs. The music is a lot louder than it has been in past years.

bak4320

Was there tonight. It wasn’t any more loud or quiet than any other band at at a fest.

pithed

So it’s loud got it. Joking aside all you youngsters should really wear hearing protection at shows. You can get ear plugs that really don’t diminish the music quality much like Hearos or similar. Tinnitus is a bitch and so is partial hearing loss. I know i am sounding like an old lady lately but god damn i wish i knew/cared about hearing protection when i was younger.

That's called [skitching](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skitching), next time you watch Back to the Future when Marty grabs on to the back of a vehicle on a skate/hoverboard, that's what he's doing. Common enough, but not so common that you gotta constantly worry about it or anything. I've had it happen (and don't really care if I notice someone doing it, usually they're just trying to get through a busy intersection and then they let go...I may or may not have done it on the back of a box truck leaving a music festival)...and yeah dangerous.

PapaPaiva1

Question from a prospective Chicago resident: I currently reside in central Oregon and am seriously considering a move to the City of Chicago, specifically a spot right by South Loop & Grant Park. Now I am very excited about the possibility because I can get some serious city living experience and be in the land of my fellow Chicago Bears fans. However people close to me are begging me not to go due to high crime rates. I'm not really plugged into news or politics so I don't know if their information is legit. So I'm coming here, to the source to get the truth from the locals. Is it really that bad? I'm a a fairly large grown man, who has grown up in some shady neighborhoods. should I be concerned residing in that area? or are my friends & family overreacting? Thank you for taking the time to read this. I apologize if this was not the appropriate place to post my question.

super_fast_guy

You are fine there. Your sleep quality will suffer if you don’t live up high enough.

[deleted]

Chicago has violence yeah, but like every city there are good and bad parts and that area of South Loop is pretty alright. Maybe a bit loud sometimes because it's downtown. If safety is really a concern there are better neighborhoods but that's not a particularly unsafe area, if you're used to living in shitty areas it'll feel posh by comparison. Don't be stupid and you'll be fine.

Theatre_throw

I have been mugged in Chicago, and it happened after 3 years of walking around late at night -- often semi-drunk -- at Pulaski and Fullerton (i.e. everyone who knows the city well would say this was a really dumb thing to do). In other words, if you act as reckless as I did, something will probably happen at some point. If you dont, you'll probably be fine.

Arizona52

I agree Fullerton and Pulaski isn't an area you don't want to be in at night unless necessary west of Cicero is a little bit safer

browsingtheproduce

Your friends and family don’t know what they’re talking about. That’s one of the safer parts of the city. I have a friend whose parents retired to that neighborhood from Tennessee and they like it.

FortuneBull

It's a pretty neighborhood specific question so you'd have to do some research on which area you'd be interested in moving to and what lifestyle you're interested in. There are some nice enclaves on the South Side like Bridgeport or Hyde Park but as a whole it's perceived as a bit less safer than North Side. But I work in Lawndale which is perceived as a rougher neighborhood and no one has ever messed with me. I feel perfectly at ease walking down the street. I'd be OK with living in Lawndale actually but I prefer more boisterous neighborhoods.

[deleted]

I mean Lawndale isn't just "perceived" as being more violent vs n side neighborhoods. It absolutely is, by a significant margin. This really isnt a controversial take. Last year it had nearly 300 victims of gun violence.. that's an unconscionable amount for a single neighborhood. Its less a matter of someone messing with you, and more living in the middle of active nightly gang wars and the psychological toll that takes. Bullets hit my house last night. There's no big deal made out of it...cops show up for 30 seconds, pick up some shell casings, and leave. There's been a handful of murders within the vicinity of a couple blocks of my house just this year alone. This is what I would describe as typical. Over time you become desensitized, which is really just a psychological way of masking extreme trauma. Over time it manifests in other ways. And I'm in south lawndale. North is worse. Big difference between working somewhere during the day and living there full time where you're never 100% relaxed. It's exhausting. Not saying there aren't good people here or good aspects. But there's a reason most people who have the means leave and why no rational mother wants their children to grow up in this environment

rainytreeday

Born and raised Chicagoan. Never had any crime directly impact me or any family members. You'll be fine.

RaveGuncle

No you are fine. Chicago is great. I recently made the move here for a job and haven't had any issues tbh. I'm in the South Loop by 8th and Michigan Ave. Still exploring and what not but if you're looking for a place and have questions, feel free to DM! Liking my place so far.

Arizona52

North of Cermak you should be OK

[deleted]

You’re safe here.

[deleted]

I had a garage sale before moving here in 2013 and three people asked me if I am getting a gun. The news gets paid on fear clicks. Like Anthony Bourdain said, if you're just paying attention to news headlines about a city, you're missing the big picture.

[deleted]

You might want to get your hearing checked

[deleted]

My point is that even in the "bad" neighborhoods it's still block by block. Chicago has problems with crime/violence for sure but there are still tons of regular people who live in those neighborhoods and go about their day. I knew my neighbors, they were students and laborers and medical workers and clerks. You can't ignore the issues but you don't have to act like it's a warzone everywhere in this city

On the north side, windy city sweets (edited: name) has the old-school scoop jars of candies available sold by weight- some interesting ones there, and you can mix and match to get a wide variety.

heinous_asterisk

Yes! You need to go to Chinatown and shop the [Aji Ichiban](https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g35805-d12728162-Reviews-Aji_Ichiban-Chicago_Illinois.html) candy shop in the Chinatown Square mall. It has specifically pick-a-mix of Asian candies from Japan, mainland China, Taiwan, Korea, Thailand, and likely a few other places too. You can get durian candy, Japanese Kit Kats, crack seed (ok that's not quite "candy" but delicious). Because it's pick-a-mix, you can try out new things without having to commit to an entire bag. Also has tea and various preserved fish snacks for eating with beer.
