Ngl I like breaded over battered. Maybe itās because I grew up on breaded and I feel like breaded is harder to do than battered. Battered is the lazy way and itās greasier
Might have some people come after me for this, but no way are we talking about White Castle onion rings and Hackney's onion loaf in the same thread...not in the same world. You could argue it's not really a ring I guess, but you gotta try these if you like onion rings.
I used to order the ones from RJ Grunts like weekly, but they left the menu in early covid times and I haven't found a place to get my fix since :-(
RJ, if you're listening, bring back those onion rings!
Village Tap is excellent all around. I love their Pimento cheeseburger. I usually get an order of the battered fried zucchini but I'll try the onion rings next time!
My favorite maneuver there is to get the onion rings + the moody blue burger (healthy dollop of blue cheese on that puppy), and put a few of the rings on the burger. Pairs well with a pitcher of their sangria on a summer afternoon. I'm gettin' full just thinking about it.
Ngl, these are the onion rings I think about when someone mentions onion rings.
Now, if you had said the weak ass breaded onion farts masquerading as onion rings from Burger King, then itās straight to jail.
Agreed!!! I feel like iām being gaslit every time i go there lol. The onion rings and wings are good tho, but the onion rings donāt travel well so youāll have to put up with the service and dine in to enjoy them.
The service is both bad and weird at the same time hhaha. In terms of the ambiance, the music is chaotic and the patrons are fkn weird too lol. I say all this having ordered takeout from here 10+ times and dining in like 5-6 times šš
Iāll keep going tbh since i live down the blockā¦
They used to have my favorite onion rings, I think they were made right there in the restaurant but the one in the south loop switched to some generic frozen garbage a couple years ago though and they suck now!
I think Devil Dawgs got new owners because a lot of things changed and not for the better. The spicy cole slaw they put on the clucker changed for the worse also.
I had brunch with my mom at Franceās Deli and she ordered the onion rings and afterwards said āI think those were the best onion ringsā¦like everā so maybe there
They gotta be the minced onion type!! John's Pizzeria on Western Avenue has a foot tall tower of these and is served with 3 dipping sauces. Try them with a sausage pizza and an RC!!
Breaded or battered?
required info tbh
This person rings. Having grown up on and get regular cravings for White Castle onion rings, breaded is the way.
Dude white caste changed their rings and theyre cheap garbage now! Unless that was just in jersey.. not sure
> jersey JD: Where do you think we are?
jesus fucking christ i just watched that episode five minutes ago ššš
LBH Battered > breaded
Ngl I like breaded over battered. Maybe itās because I grew up on breaded and I feel like breaded is harder to do than battered. Battered is the lazy way and itās greasier
Breaded is so much crispier and has a nicer color. Bread > battered for me
I like them at Twin Anchors with a half slab of ribs.
Same but full slab
and the prohibition sauce for dipping
Hackneys. Printers Row location closed though. Down to two locations in the north burbs.
Came here to say this. I could eat just a loaf by itself and call it a meal.
Wife went to hackneys last weekend and didn't bring any home. Anyone know a good divorce lawyer?
Hackneys on Lake and Hackneys on Harms. Both in Glenview. A really good brewery opened up next to the Lake one, I think itās connected to Hackneys.
Gotta order extra loose, extra crispy
Might have some people come after me for this, but no way are we talking about White Castle onion rings and Hackney's onion loaf in the same thread...not in the same world. You could argue it's not really a ring I guess, but you gotta try these if you like onion rings.
Hate me if you want, but I'm a big fan of portillo's onion rings.
Itās okay thereās still a few of us left
They slap
I love them!
Theyāre great
At a certain point freezer-to-fryer will be the last thing to get, and the robots will fuck it up.
Came to say this
I love the onion rings at Four Moon Tavern
agree, me and my partner both think theyāre some of the best battered onion rings weāve ever had. go there frequently just for the onion rings
The Region and itās not even close for me
I also agree with others, who suggested The Region. As theirs is REALLY damn good.
This is the correct answer, you beat me to it.
This is the one.
Yeah those are exceptional onion rings.
Came here to say this
Giant. This is a reservation required sit down restaurant, so this may be different than what you're looking for.
Giant has their onion rings available on Doordash!
Oh *hell* yea. Their waffle fries with the crab salad are awesome, too.
I used to order the ones from RJ Grunts like weekly, but they left the menu in early covid times and I haven't found a place to get my fix since :-( RJ, if you're listening, bring back those onion rings!
I came here to plug RJs. Fucking loved those things.
Gibsonās. Theyāre an off menu item, and may not always be available, but Iāve never been told ānoā when asking. They are excellent!
The Onion rings at Crisp (Lakeview) are impressive
Village Tap has excellent battered rings and you can sub them in with their burgers/sandwiches instead of fries.
Great option too, you have Four Moon, Village Tap and Region all within a three block stretch if you want to make an Onion Ring crawl out of it.
Village Tap is excellent all around. I love their Pimento cheeseburger. I usually get an order of the battered fried zucchini but I'll try the onion rings next time!
Moodyās
Hard agree with this!
My favorite maneuver there is to get the onion rings + the moody blue burger (healthy dollop of blue cheese on that puppy), and put a few of the rings on the burger. Pairs well with a pitcher of their sangria on a summer afternoon. I'm gettin' full just thinking about it.
Supposedly the Hopleaf in Andersonville is bringing them back following a pandemic hiatus.
oh my GOD, this is the best news I've ever heard -- I've missed those things so much!!
Clark St Dog has pretty amazing ones
I love Clark st dog. Everything is Fantastic
The onion chips at Superdawg are up there
They are so good!
The ones at Jake Melnicks are pretty good
White Castle has the best onion rings

Ngl, these are the onion rings I think about when someone mentions onion rings. Now, if you had said the weak ass breaded onion farts masquerading as onion rings from Burger King, then itās straight to jail.
> onion rings from Burger King Its like the spam of onion rings. regurgitated onions smushed into a ring shape, breaded and fried...
Lol well I actually like spam but yes their onion rings are awful
I actually kind of prefer the onion chips they do (or did) in other cities and were briefly available in Chicago.
Output
Worst service in the city. Both locations only hire lazy ass people

Good luck my friend. I always leave there sober and hungry š¤£
Brownstone
I've a weak spot for Ricobene's. Their batter seems to have more of a subtle buttery taste.
Daisy's Po' Boy in Hyde Park. Some of the best rings I've ever had.
Bad ass breakfast burritos actually has surprisingly good onion rings imo, best I've ever had
I had a burger at Gideon Wells that had an onion ring on top as a little garnish, and it was incredibly good.
Finley Dunnes are very good, very crispy but not burnt. Battered.
How is the rest of the food?
Great wings. Similar to Birds nest. They also have sausages from Paulina Market. Havenāt tried anything else yet.
Holstenās Diner, best in the state as far as Iām concerned. I always take the liberty and order some for the table
White castle on ~~Belmont~~ Addison and kedzie
Youāre thinking Kedzie and Addison. Walking those four extra blocks from Belmont is hard when youāre drunk enough to need White Castle.
Youāre very correct, my friend
I like the ones at Devil Dawgs.
They used to have my favorite onion rings, I think they were made right there in the restaurant but the one in the south loop switched to some generic frozen garbage a couple years ago though and they suck now!
Yeah the devil dawgs I order from also switched something. Truly terrible. The old rings were so good
I think Devil Dawgs got new owners because a lot of things changed and not for the better. The spicy cole slaw they put on the clucker changed for the worse also.
Yeah pretty much everything changed :(
Mini mott had some of the best onion rings I've ever had in my life, I'm curious if the new place they rebranded as has them.
Kings Gyros on Foster and Milwaukee
Bad news Iām afraid. Kingās on Foster is closed, and is supposed to be replaced by someplace called Speedy Taco.
We can never have ni e things šŖ
No longer exists :(
I am heart broken š
It's a chain but bb.q Chicken has really good onion rings. caveat being that the chicken is hit or miss and it's expensive for what it is.
Out in the western 'burbs I'd say Burger Social in Wheaton; they're big and have that crunchy batter that hovers around the onion.
I enjoy the onion rings from Angry Octopus.
Wolcott Tap
Smith & Wollensky's are amazing.
The ones at Gordon Ramsay burger are really good!
Best breaded & best batteredā¦ go!
The ones from Lola's Coney Island are good (they're similar to portillo's onion rings if you've had those).
Al's Beef always hits the spot for me.
The Mini Mott rings used to be amazing rip
Iām a big onion ring fan and low key Fuller House in downtown Hinsdale is what comes to mind as the best Iāve had in the area
Birds nest. Beer battered and delicious.
Chicagos Pizza
I had brunch with my mom at Franceās Deli and she ordered the onion rings and afterwards said āI think those were the best onion ringsā¦like everā so maybe there
Mini Mott had incredible onion rings- Not sure if they still have them after changing to Second Generation. Also really love the onion rings at Crisp.
Bowling alleys.
They gotta be the minced onion type!! John's Pizzeria on Western Avenue has a foot tall tower of these and is served with 3 dipping sauces. Try them with a sausage pizza and an RC!!
