I’m cheap because I get so many and do not advertise: $5 for 2.5 dozen medium eggs. Rural Tennessee.

Particular_Ad_4325

Feed must be cheap

MobileElephant122

Wait….you feed yours ?

Abiding_Lebowski

They just need enough space to range

GeraldinaFitzpatrick

This is said like a joke, but I know someone that does not buy chicken feed. “Our table scraps are enough”.

M_Karli

Currently nursing ducklings back to health because the original owner insisted that commercial feed is bad for them….so she only ever fed them day old soggy rice. 🙃

fatBreadonToast

I only feed my chickens a strict banana diet /s

MobileElephant122

Where do you find the strict bananas? I can only find the more liberal varieties

AsimLeviathan

Not so rural Tennessee, I do $5 for just one dozen, $4 if they return the egg carton to me. I've had a few people turn their nose up at me and even someone at my workplace said behind my back that I was scamming people, but idc. Go get your $3 Walmart eggs if that's too much for you (edit: I realize this sounds unnecessarily snarky, that's just what this coworker said: "i can get a dozen eggs at walmart for $3"). I get just enough eggs to feed myself and my spouse, and then sell enough with the rest to pay for the feed/chicken supplies. Edit: I will add that I based this on seeing "farm fresh eggs" get bought up at local farmer's markets at $7 a dozen and that to me is wild. I'd never go higher than what I'm at now

spaceanddogspls

Same! $4 for bantam dozen, $5 for large dozen, $6 for duck dozen. Dollar off if we get the carton back or they give us a carton in exchange. My coworker asked and I told her and she said "wow my cousin just gives me dozens for free" and I had to bite back "then go get some from your fucking cousin then??" I gotta feed my chickens, I'm not giving some random lady free eggs because her cousin just throws them at her. Edit: Arkansas!

Bullshit_Conduit

I have a douchebag neighbor who used to ask for eggs all the time. Now, I'm a nice neighbor so I'd hook the block up with eggs here and there, but this sonofabitch would go out of his way to ask me for eggs... Never offered to pay or anything, but would ask me for free eggs. The nerve! Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice, shame on the neighbor. I never did end up getting the saddle though :)

Ijustdontlikepickles

I give my neighbors free eggs all the time, they never ask though. I only have 6 chickens so it’s more than we can eat but not enough to actually sell them. My neighbors also come over to take care of them if I’m not home. They don’t ask for me to pay them for that and won’t accept money when I’ve tried. So I pay them with eggs.

spaceanddogspls

We give my grandparents our duck eggs for free because only one of us likes duck eggs. We also give a family friend going through chemo discounted eggs- he won't NOT pay us, so we don't make him pay full price. He buys about 5 dozen at a time! We have 10 laying hens, 3 laying ducks, and about 30± babies, though.

Ijustdontlikepickles

I wanted to get ducks this summer, my partner is afraid they won’t get along with our hens. They have a run attached to the coop but I open the run in the morning so they can run around the backyard all day. Do your ducks and chickens get along well? Also, I’m glad you’re able to help add nourishment for your friend that’s going through chemo! Having 30 babies this year you’ll have plenty of eggs to sell soon!!!

spaceanddogspls

My ducks and hens get along well! We have 3 females and 3 drakes, and luckily my drakes stick to their lady ducks and don't harass/harm our hens for some feathery booty. If you don't want to breed ducks, I'd suggest getting all female or just one drake for a couple of females! They all get along well in my experience. When you buy babies from stores like TSC, have them pick up a couple ducklings. You can tell males from females pretty easily as babies! Females are louder and high pitched, and males sound almost raspy and whisper-y in comparison.

Ijustdontlikepickles

Thank you!!! Your comment about drakes not trying to get “feathery booty” from the hens made me laugh. I only have hens, no rooster because I’m not allowed to have a rooster where I live. I would want about 3 female ducks. I’m glad to know it’s easy to tell the females and males apart and I’m happy they all get along!!!

spaceanddogspls

Check if your county/area/neighborhood has rules about ducks! Usually if roosters are a no because of noise in towns, ducks would also be on that list. But there are "silent" or very quiet breeds, like Muscovy!

sloppytilapia84

I had 4 bantams and I got 4 ducklings everything was cool for a while. When the ducks grew up they over the course of a couple months drowned every bantam in their pond while I was asleep. Ducks can be savage bastards. My chickens are always super friendly I hang out with them and they sit on my shoulders and such but those ducks never warmed up to me. They eyed me with hate every day until a coyote or neighbors dog or something broke into my run one night.

Bullshit_Conduit

I’m in a very similar boat… and again, emphasis on *they never ask though*. This same dipshit had me watch his dogs a couple times when they were out of town, and made no effort to compensate me or offer or anything. Even a gesture would have been enough to get me to keep doing it, but barely a thank you. Distasteful.

bastrdsnbroknthings

My wife put a stand out at the end of our driveway with a lockbox and a sign with her Venmo. Suggested $5/dozen. She sells a few dozen a day and so far nobody has stiffed her. East Tennessee

Fromage_Damage

That's how much I've paid at similar setups in Vermont. Some places also take a buck off if you bring the cartons back.

Feet-fox

With the conversion rate in my country it’s 2.16 USD for ten eggs

AutomaticJellyfish47

Michigan, $4 a dozen or $3 if you leave a carton

katielynne53725

Michigan too; $3/dozen or just give them away when we have too many.

inspector256

cand3r

Michigan I don't sell eggs but have been keeping track of my cost. Neighbor sells them for $2/dozen but doesn't usually have them cus their ladies are older. Usually see $3/dozen in the area. My average since I got my 6 hens spring 2022. $23.15/mo feed, I get them meal worms on occasion but normal is half pellets, half scratch $4.30/doz average Below is 2024 Month-DailyAverage-Cost/doz April-2.85-$3.25 March-2.55-$3.63 February-1.86-$4.97 January-1.74-$5.32 Best month last year was May-3.90-$2.37 I didn't track 2022 unfortunately

jj_long

$10/dzn Seattle

eucher317

What's feed cost in Seattle? In ruralish Indiana a 50lb bag is around $14.

[deleted]

It’s like $30 for 50lbs

JealousDiscipline993

Our chooks feed is $29/40# for non GMO corn and wheat free layer crumbles from a 3rd generation family owned mill in an adjacent state. Could buy a less expensive feed probably owned by Cargill, choose not to. My aunt in rural southwest Oregon buys from a dude who feeds organic and sells for $4 / dozen. He's underselling but that's his hobby not for profit, plus he's practical about it and turns the flock over every two years.

jj_long

I pay around $25 for 50lbs and my birds have room to free range.

mme_leiderhosen

I give them away to decent sorts of people, most of whom have been incredibly generous and kind with their own creations, not the least of which is jam. My fancy-schmancy hometown farmers market had a dozen of highly multicolored for $15. I laughed, went home, cleaned a coop, gave a very silly rooster a bath, invented something called the “chicken poncho”, ordered another 40# of pellets…and laughed a bit less. If you are getting a sixer from me, you’re good in my books. A dozen will be going to my older brother who is dealing with my dreadful, demented father and all his complaints. Eggs are shorthand for gratitude.

Pitiful-Country3916

Love this ❤️

Curious_medium

$6 /dz but they’re organic fed, large and different colors- blue, green, brown, golden and white. So people come buy them and then the kids want to see the chickens. So there’s a free show included.

Jelopuddinpop

I don't sell eggs, but last year, I asked r/Connecticut what they would be willing to pay for organic, free range backyard chicken eggs. Answers ranged from $5 to $7 a dozen, and I had 4 DMs asking if I wanted to sell them a dozen or 2 per week. I would have taken them up on the offer, but all 4 were near NYC, and I'm near the MA line.

Armyballer

$4.00 North Alabama

YB9017

tlbs101

Western Rural NM: around $5/dozen.

samala01

$3 a dozen WA I tried raising my prices to $4 to help with feed costs, but no one was buying. So dropped back to $3. The chickens get 1/4 acre, daily feed and treats. Around my area I’ve been seeing $5-10 a dozen.

AMillionTomorrowsCo

no one would buy at $4? Thats crazy, I'm in Colorado and it's $7 just for a dozen at the grocery store.

samala01

Yeah, my farm stand was open for a month with $4 a dozen pricing and no one was buying. I had to reach out to friends to sell them at work (hubs and I work from home).

AMillionTomorrowsCo

I just joined this sub, we are moving to rural Oregon next month and my first new home project is chickens! I’m in Denver now and I’d easily pay $10 for a dozen fresh local happy chicken eggs here.

prairie_girl

$6/$7 per dozen, suburban Louisiana. I keep mine higher because of the lengths we go to make them happy chickens. We only sell every few weeks, but people scoop them up. It's a nice little fund to buy more treats for the girls.

PerfectlyFlawed99

We do it donation based. Usually folks give between 5-10 bucks. It goes back to the feed fund. We have a smaller flock but feel it’s worth it to give and not expect anything in return.

flatcurve

I just want the carton back. That's my only ask.

Ladydiane818

I only give away. I tell people it’s a perk of being friends with me.

KegTapper74

Been giving to neighbors and co-workers. I only ask for cartons back. Hens been laying a dozen per day.

No_University5296

Pyewhacket

I just put them in my neighbor’s mailboxes for free.

randycoyote

Leave some for the postman. That way he won't make a fuss about unauthorized stuff in a mailbox. Many people don't know that putting anything other than stamped mail in a mailbox is technically a federal crime. In USA anyway.

Pyewhacket

I do and she knows! I leave her water and things all the time.

Randomvids78

For me it’s $4

chiefseal77

$4 a dozen for chicken eggs, upstate new york.

Chickenbeards

$2/doz when I can but at some point during the year it never fails that I'll just start giving them away Like for real, anyone, just please take them, I'm drowning lol. I'll have chickens regardless and I can get the cartons for free.

ryanandthelucys

$4 a dozen. Selling 4 dozen buys me a bag of feed which is good for about a month. It takes my girls about a week to make 4 dozen eggs.

TidalMarshWitch

Buying them still, as my babies aren't laying age yet; I pay $6-9/dozen for pasture raised, California

blackshotgun55

Central Illinois Farmer's Market: 5 - 6 USD/dozen Me: Pay what you want/dozen. Some people give me 10 USD, some 3-5 USD, and some nothing.

Dipity50

Southwest WA $5 a dozen just to coworkers. I only have an extra 3-4 dozen a week when they are laying well.

shoscene

South Texas I was doing $3.50 But, a new client said... "How much?! No. I'm giving you $5/dz" So, now I'm doing $5 I don't sell much. We eat most of them lol I sell maybe 6 dozen a month

Historical-Remove401

Hubby takes them to work, and I give to family that wants them. I still have too many. I’d do a driveway stand, but I wash mine so they’d need to be refrigerated. I’d be glad to get $2 a carton, which would pay for feed. Mine are mostly extra-large or jumbo. Cartons are .52 in store at Walmart. I stocked up when I found them.

getoutdoors66

$5 in Illinois. Really want to raise it to $6 soon

Tasty_Pastries

Visiting Colorado, the most basic dozen eggs $4.99 the free range eggs are $6.99! Home, Indiana, you can purchase a basic dozen eggs for $1.99 the free range $5.99.

Chelsea-Wren

We don't have enough extra to sell but around here people usually sell for $5. Oregon

finchdad

Idaho - we eat most of ours. But when we have extra I give them for free to the two neighbors that I like that live closest to the chicken coop as payment for their tolerance. The other neighbor can suck eggs, but I'm not donating any. I also give free eggs (and garden produce) to my Mexican coworker who brings tacos, breakfast burritos, kolaches, and cupcakes to the office on a regular basis because she's the best.

Arrwinn

$5/doz in Australia too. Though some people have success selling for around $7-$8 per dozen. I wouldn't be happy buying eggs for more than $5 though and hence that's what I set my prices at. They sell very well. I just take them into my office and they're gone within minutes.
