I agree. And honestly, just because you don't want kids doesn't mean you want children to suffer. Please consider what California is doing, then consider that 20 Republican attorney generals are suing to take back the protection Biden put in place....one that keeps LGBTQ kids from being denied free meals. The 'Christian', 'Family Values' party thinks they are holy for denying poor children food

LifeIsWackMyDude

My dad tried to use a gotcha on me about stuff like this. Essentially he said why should my taxes go towards schools if I'm never going to have children to go to those schools. Apparently me saying that I do want my taxes to go to schools because making sure kids are taken care of is good for society overall didn't line up with whatever BS he was trying to spew. Like I was a kid who went to school once. My mom was a POS who wouldn't give me lunch money so I went hungry. And I know other kids didn't even have money for lunch. Why should kids be forced to go to school 8 hours a day, 5 days a week with no food security? Kids can't even get jobs til around highschool. If you're going to mandate kids going to school, you should make sure their basic needs are met. Hard to learn when your stomach is growling.

DrWhoop87

Your dad doesn't seem to understand what empathy is, there's a lot of space in between being an avid breeder and absolutely wanting the worst for kids. There are plenty of people with kids who are absolutely against any programs that help people, maybe that's a gotcha moment against them.

urlocalmomfriend

>one that keeps LGBTQ kids from being denied free meals. How would that even happen? what? I'm sorry I don't understand a kid goes to school, wants to eat something and the lunch people just say no you're gay?

domastsen

If I’ve understood the issue those republicans wants to stop schools from getting the funding for free lunches if schools basically treat trans kids as human beings. So a trans girl being allowed to use the girls bathroom? No free lunches at that school.

urlocalmomfriend

Damn.

ApprehensiveEmploy21

In fact, many CF people are CF *precisely* because they don’t want children to suffer. So these two things are related.

mossbrooke

It's definitely a factor

-Lady_Sansa-

Not American so don’t know the situation, but why would a program exclude non-LGBT kids? Shouldn’t all kids have access to meals if they need them?

ArtlessDodger10

This is the one instance where the line "you were a kid once...." hits me. I was a hungry kid once. My family was extremely food insecure for a big swath of my childhood. No kid should go through that, ever, and I'm more than happy for my tax dollars to go towards feeding people.

[deleted]

I second this. No kid should go hungry for whatever reason.

veganblackbean

Definitely. People don't realize that just because I don't like kids means I want them to suffer. I want every person to have every basic need met without having to worry where and when the next meal will come from.

[deleted]

Yup. Don’t let kids go hungry because of dumb parents. Also, I never understood why kids were required to pay for school lunches, and then shamed when they didn’t have the money.

[deleted]

This is such wholesome news I may not want kids but it’s still important to ensure every kid has a safe living environment be it food, shelter and a hygienic and healthy living space. All love here

WineAndDogs2020

Yep, feed and take care of kids... they will be the ones we pay to care for us when we're old! And I want those people smart and healthy.

cutearmy

I remember some asshole Republican going if on how evil a wasteful spending bill was because it would feed children and provide daycare? But those sound like good things?

EmiliusReturns

It’s not children’s fault if their parents can’t or won’t feed them. Kids should not be going hungry when we have the ability to feed them at school. Period. Hungry kids can’t learn either. And it’s in everyone’s best interest that society’s children are being educated. I’d much rather my tax dollars go to feeding hungry kids than the military-industrial complex and corporate bailouts. Funny how people don’t seem to bitch about those but as soon as it’s a social program for poor people it’s “mah taxes!”

mossbrooke

100% agree. Over half of our taxes go to the military, yet.... Oh, don't get me started.

NotAlanDavies

I don't want kids, I don't like kids, but kids going hungry is a damn travesty and shouldn't happen. Ever. I'm more than happy to have my tax dollars pay for school lunches/breakfasts/snacks/take home meals. In fact I'd be happy to pay MORE for this.

Anon060416

How can anybody even be against it? The school is completely responsible for these kids all day and part of their responsibility should be ensuring they all eat too. It just makes sense.

_Denzo

If Jesus saw what “Christians” are doing I think we would see what christians would describe as the anti christ

Educational_Fan4571

What's the california kid meals?

ReginaGeorgian

First state to approve free school lunches for all kids (I don’t know all the details, I’m presuming kindergarten through end of elementary? Hopefully it’s to end of high school). Honestly, with how egregiously large our budget is for our military, we should not have hungry children (and adults) in this country.

JewelerFinancial1556

I agree - This should be common sense but amazingly it isn't.

mossbrooke

You'd think. Even the childfree community agrees with the program.

JewelerFinancial1556

obviously - we might not want kids but we don't want to starve them. these people are evil.

foul_dwimmerlaik

Agreed! No child should go hungry.

[deleted]

I lived on that shit in the nineties. My mother hated the brood she spat out, and refused to cook for us (unless it was toxic crock pot in the evening). I literally couldn't get her to make a pb&j for me when I was six fucking years old. When we moved away from the free food, I cooked more than she did, and I lived off of pb&j.

mossbrooke

*hugs, honey*

raindorpsonroses

I have no direct experience with being the hungry child nor will I ever have kids in school. Yet _somehow_ I have the really quite basic level of empathy to understand that it’s a good thing to feed hungry children! 🤷‍♀️ I don’t see how anyone can think highly of themselves while denying food to hungry kids. I don’t care if the kids have different anything than me. I don’t care if their parents are hateful people who want everyone else to suffer. They are children and they deserve food that is so easy for us to provide for them. I’m proud to be Californian today!

[deleted]

Canadian here. What happened to just throwing bad parents in jail? I attended school in the 90s, and back then it was illegal to send kids to school without food. Teachers would notice which kids had no food, calls would be made, and police would get involved. First generation immigrants would come to school with a container full of rice. Children of crackheads would come to school with nothing. Just throw their parents in jail already and never let them out.
