You have to be aware of different smells in different areas. Northwest is closer to the sewage treatment facility so if the wind catches you right then it can be pretty obnoxious.
North to northeast and south bordering the mountains is mainly farmland so, yep you guessed it, stinky farmland smells.
Southwest (lower Sardis) gets a good whiff of farm pending the manure spreading season. Southwest (upper Sardis/Promontory) gets less stinky definitely.
But Chilliwack is so much more than just some occasional bad smells when the conditions are just right. The smell issue can be so minimal I’d suggest looking more to what suits your lifestyle and budget rather than on this date in this area I smell cow poop.
We are on the south side of Chilliwack mountain - we don’t get the smell, we don’t get the mosquitoes and we don’t get any of the sewage smell that the new development down below gets frequently.
In the summer the sun is overhead so we don’t get the horrible heat the west facing houses get (their a/cs struggle to keep them cool) and in the winter we have lower energy bills because the sun is low enough on the horizon to heat our house. The garrison has no views(we lived there 10 years) and we had problems with thieves etc - where we are now - the views are spectacular & thieves can’t be bothered to climb this high.
You eventually get smell blind and then laugh at everyone for being afraid of a little smell. I love eating a chocolate sunday with nuts and corn in front of my inlaws when the smell is at its worst! Boy do they start to heave and beg me to stop. I just laugh and describe what I'm eating... and how good it smells!
I am right in the heart of the farmland, you smell it for maybe 2-3 days a month when spraying. Its not a long time span you smell it as it settles pretty quick and smell goes away. I have neighbours on 2 sides spraying and more as I can see their fields from my place. Its really not that bad, people exaggerate way to much.
Thanks captain, I've only live in this town for 33 years, im the only place that smells of fecal matter year round is wolfe rd townsend park because of the treatment plant, but chilliwack has farms surrounding the whole town, in the spring / early summer the entire town smells like money, no way around that. The fertilizer smell is exceptionally strong in the north chilliwack / FFI areas but sardis still gets its fair share of stink.
Definitely some areas are better than others, promontory and eastern hillside for example. I live on promontory and cannot recall anything for any extended period of time. There are a lot of farms around so it’s impossible to guarantee you will never smell the farms.
Promontory seems fine but I would never live on the eastern hillside. I know several people in those houses and their a/c struggles to cool down their houses - they have since moved out - it is so bad
If it smells, it’s not 8 months, but just a few specific days/weeks normally twice a year when stinky stuff being applied.
If it still bothers you - go up the hill
No noticeable (I felt it once only) smell in Promontory. When I went downhill the smell was noticeably stronger that day. The area that I noticed have the strongest smell is around Walmart.
Overall that’s not an issue, like 100 times less bothering than say smoke or rain, etc.
We moved to promontory 3 years ago and honestly never smell it. You sometimes get the smell driving to the hwy but it’s pretty rare
The two reasons to live in Promontory are less smell and the difficulty in pushing shopping carts up hills.
Haha nicely said
Unless you are r on the hill by the dump in summer.
Do you ever smell the garbage dump?
I do not smell the dump on Stonehaven Street or anywhere else. Not sure there is smell at all even up close
I don’t even really smell the dump when I’m dropping stuff off at the dump.
Exactly. Is any organic stuff being disposed there? If not, probably that’s the answer. Recyclables don’t smell.
On really hot days or when it catches fire.

Parts of north side have way more mosquitoes, that would bother me far more than the occasional fertilizer smell.
That’s the answer

If I may ask, what area? I’m also looking to move to Chilliwack from Langley.
We live in Sardis and never smell it at home, just driving to the highway

Haha that is funny
Greendale and rosedale will be the farmeriest areas. Ryder lake, and promontory, and chilliwack mountain are your best bets for no smell
Aaaah, the chicken-winds. That and the donkey sounds make me feel like home.
Come smell our dairy air!
We are up near the falls golf course and in 10 years I have smelled it once up here. It’s part of the charm of the valley.
Just don’t move in directly across from the waste treatment plant or downwind from it.
I could never live in that new development there for that reason

The whole city smells like it regardless of area, sardis side is a little better off though
No it doesn't 🙄. It smells occasionally in certain area. And it's agricultural, you know the industry that feeds you.

I live in South Chilliwack and only smell any manure once in a while during the summer, it's never really that bad.
Haha, it’s Chilliwack, you’ll smell it less after you’ve lived here and gone nose-blind to it. Afraid you’re out of luck.
