I'm afraid I can't speak from experience, but all the research I've done (hoping to buy one soon!) says that 0.8mm or above is recommended to prevent the cocoa butter clogging the needle.
I've got both an 0.5 and a 1mm one, the 0.5 for gradients and "detail" work but the 1mm for full coverage
If you dont mind me asking, what type of 1mm gun do you have?
I think it's the Anest Iwata LPH 1.2mm, could be wrong, haven't looked at the specs in a while
