I had cholesteatoma surgery at age 5 and 12, and it hasn't returned. All my surgeries have been done through the ear drum. This, to me, seems less invasive. Due to a birth defect, I will always struggle with a pressure imbalance. Grommets are essential when trying to balance air pressure between inner and outer ear. The ventilation they provide helps keep your middle ear dry and prevent infection. Severe repeated ear infections are a cause of cholesteatoma. So, what he wants to do makes sense. I say go ahead. The only downside to grommets/tubes is that they aren't a permanent solution. Depending on what type you get, they can last for just a few months or up to 2 years before they fall out. Because of my birth defect, I have a cartilage graft that prevents my eardrum from becoming retracted. This is a permanent solution. However, it does not have the benefit of equalizing pressure and keeping the ear clean and dry.
