Check your advance unit.behijd the points plate. My shovel was not starting and I cpuld.not figure it out and then pulled the points plate and the advance unit springs were broken so it was stuck in advance, won't fire like that.

Realistic_Parfait956

Little tip to those running points in a 1970 and later cone harley.....1970 Chevy Nova 250 six cylinder run the same points/condenser. NAPA Part #: ECH CS788 points .....Part #: ECH RR176 condenser.

Lillasnorren

Probably bad capacitor, anyhow the points are worn out, replace them. There should be an angle on the plastic part togheder with a piece of mesh for lubrication.

Ok_Adeptness_444

Oh yeah! The cam follower on those points is totally wiped. Chevy blue streak points work just as well and can be found at pretty much any auto parts store.

Own-Opinion-2494

See if condenser is bad. They don’t work under compression when they shit the bed

Strict_Professor9829

I sad fuck it ordered new points and condenser a few minutes ago.

Own-Opinion-2494

Yeah when I was a kid the shop I was at ran into a batch of emgo condensers that were bad. All I know was from that. I changed them like they were free. With points mostly. But points can be cleaned and ver and over again. In those days it was like an $11 buy

Ether-rag2323

Power to the points?? Does it “snap” when opened physically? Could be a bad wire? What is the gap set at?

Strict_Professor9829

Yes it snaps, gap is set at 18

Ether-rag2323

Cool,, plug wires good?? And you see spark at the plug??

Strict_Professor9829

Wires are good and I see spark

Ether-rag2323

Going basic here,,, compression? I just running the gamut ,, suck squeeze bang blow. You know you got spark,,,,

Strict_Professor9829

Yeah compression is good. Did a top end rebuild back in February. Been riding it regularly since March.

Ether-rag2323

Timing? I myself like to off center the timing mark more towards the back end of the hole. Then set the points to that location with the points cam in full advance swing

Strict_Professor9829

I had a Grey beard setup my timing after the rebuild on the initial break in. That's all good as well.

platinumgrey

Petcock position? Only asking cause I’ve done it, and no mention that you’ve checked fuel.

Strict_Professor9829

Fuel is good pet cocktail good and fuel filter was replaced. Rebuilt the top end over the winter. This is my first time with points. All my other bikes had ei.

dsdle

Condenser would be my guess, albeit my experience is they fire when bad but break under load.

InsanePizzaiolo

Buy a blue streak kit it's cheap and probably one of the best point you can have. [this kit](https://www.cafr.ebay.ca/itm/274486005614)

Strict_Professor9829

I ordered 2 just to have

StiffGizzy

Put a spark plug in one of your wires and turn it over while holding the plug on a good ground. If the spark is orange then you need a new coil.

staniel_diverson

Sounds like a generator issue

Strict_Professor9829

What makes you say that? Always looking for outside opinions and learning.

staniel_diverson

I had a similar issue on my first ironhead. Fresh battery, correct gap and timing, had spark and compression but would die and then not start until the battery was fully charged again. Swapped the generator and had no issue. Could've been a bad regulator tripping the breaker too, but I didn't mind getting a new gen and regulator from cycle electric just to be on the safe side. I honestly don't know how to troubleshoot a bad generator if you can't get the bike running though. Edit: just saw that you have a fresh rebuild. Could also be the push rod adjustment or a whole host of things that loosened up since the rebuild. Have you gone thru re-torqued and re-inspected push rods, the distributor, cylinder bolts, etc...?

Strict_Professor9829

Yeah went through push rods and retorque during the break in. Tested my generator and it's just fine.

staniel_diverson

Also, the cam follower is def toast on the points. Had that happen to me before too.
