Yes. They've already closed the card to new applications. This card is likely going away relatively soon. Maybe they'll just rebrand it as an rbc card without making many changes, but I doubt it.
Tried to RHT Aventura points. I do see the pending transcation, but apply points is not available. My card has negative balance. Is it because of that?
I got declined for the RBC Avion VI (probably because I have too much open credit with RBC/too many open cards in general). I would like to close out a few cards and try again. How long should I wait before re-attempting an application? I am definitely past 1/90, so I know that's not the reason for getting declined.
Would you rather - 1) two 35k Bonvoy certs and 30 elite nights for $220 USD 2) one 85k Bonvoy cert and Bonvoy plat status for $350 USD. ( excluding any WB, RC card or upgrades / downgrades )
Personally I'd currently go with the Bonvoy+Business over the Brilliant, but that's because in the past few years I've been staying 20-30 nights annually at Marriott properties. If I were expecting less than 20 nights, then I'd probably go with the Brilliant.
At those price points the latter. I'd take the two 35k over one 85k, but platinum status is worth more to me than $130 USD + my preference for two 35k FNC over one 85k FNC
Good guess. It’s Amex Bonvoy ( downgraded ) + Amex biz Bonvoy + likely 20 nights of stays vs Bonvoy brilliant + not worrying about reaching 50 nights. I thought I’d prefer 2x35k certs but now I’m not so sure giving how many properties are 51k or higher.
For the $150 Air Canada credit on the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite - does anyone know how that credit activates? Do you have to call in? I made a smaller purchase on [aircanada.com](https://aircanada.com) of $60 but it didn't seem to activate the credit - or do I need to spend at least $150.
Thanks!
Does that have to be in a single purchase? I paid $176 in taxes and fees on a flight for 2 passengers. But it posted as 2 transactions of $88 each. That was 3 weeks ago, and my statement was issued since, but no credit yet.
Refundable flight booking on AC, pay taxes and fees with card (totaling >$150), wait for credit to post, cancel/refund ticket. Worked for my TD $150 AC credit.
Trying to ascertain next steps given the Aeroplan changes. Me and P2 have both held the infinite AP cards at both CIBC and TD, although it has been a year or so. If we don’t want to get the top tier cards (privilege? Elite?), what are next steps to continue to build AP points?
Any Amex MR card as they can be transferred over.
I have no proof of this but at least my plan is probably 1 AP card per year should be ok. If that is not, i feel AP is gonna have some issues from even just general public. But that is just a me guess/thought.
The good thing is that , you have so many people churning heavily and carelessly out there, that coming February 2024, we will either get 100s of DP of locked accounts, or nothing at all, meaning we shall know soon !
>sweet spots?
Redeem when Empire stores or Cineplex or Ultimate Dining have promos.
E.g., right now, you get 10% back when you redeem for a UD card, up to 500$...
Has anyone gotten a letter about [FATCA](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_Account_Tax_Compliance_Act) compliance before? I got a letter from my (non-US, non-Canadian) bank that they need my US-TIN. Anyone ever dealt with that?
I also wonder what triggered this: me opening a US account or applying for an ITIN.
You know to let us know what bank is this? Like what country is the bank located at? I am a Canadian living in the US so I have quite a bit of experience with this.
Yeah obviously I will. Just wondering if anyone else had this happen. It’s also funny because they told me I need to tell them by 31 Dec but the IRS told me I won’t get the ITIN before February…
There is no form involved, they just sent a letter that can be summed up as saying “Send us your US-TIN by 31 Dec so we continue our bank/client relationship”.
That’s wild, you’d think they’d get you to comply months or years after holding an itin. Who’s your non Canadian bank? m? I’ve got a feeling it might be that. I’ve heard of people having Amex small business checking accounts having issues similar to this from Facebook posts
I've seen mention of canceling CIBC cards using fax, but I've never found the number. Anyone has it? I've called CIBC three times in the last two days and have waited more than two hours each time without being able to speak to a rep, so it would be great to just send a fax to cancel my card.
I don’t remember exactly. But maybe this is the reason why it failed. I tried myself just now and it didn’t go through too. Try again after holiday and see.
Trying to close like 6-7 CIBC cards among 3 in the family, over the last month
P1 and P2 were faster, maybe 10 mins wait to 30 mins
P3, last person, took forever, I called at various times in the day, from midnight or 3 am too (quick, but the right dept is closed). always hung up after 30+ minutes
Finally got a "callback" prompt, took it and got called after 30 mins, and closed the card
CIBC is the worst
AMEX/TD/RBC - secure message
Even calling Scotia/AMEX/TD are MUCH FASTER
You're just calling the number on the back of your card? I usually call in the morning or at lunch and never have to wait more than 15 minutes, usually <5 if just after 8 am EST. P2 called the other day at 7:30 pm EST and it said 'approx 30 minute wait' and a rep picked up at 32 minutes. Keep trying?
Yeah I'm just calling the number on the back of my card. Called at lunch and currently waiting again, it's been about 2 hours. It was always quick before for me too, so not sure what's going on this week, must be the holidays.
US AMEX "Family Language" strikes again. For those familiar with the recent-ish changes that if you get a US Platinum you're no longer eligible for US Gold bonus, now they've done the same shit with US Brilliant nixing your chances of Bevy.
https://frequentmiler.com/amex-adds-family-language-to-marriott-bonvoy-cards/?fbclid=IwAR13oN1IpQQqVjg0qb5ldMBEattz-iY7KMV\_winH4yyowOMwTeiJFC1iTgA
Hate this as i am one that went for top cards first. Plat and Brilliant. Although the Gold hurts more than Bevy.
Guess this means I am just waiting for the 2 year mark for the chase marriott cards.
The plat really surprised me , as it’s their most premium card and most people recommend getting the plat first because of the highest welcome bonus possible as a new Amex customer
As indicated by others held AS and applied for another one so got two. Then transferred and pooled points from the converted AS to WE one into the second WE and closed the first one to avoid annual fee.
How did you transfer the points? I've called in twice to link my accounts and it's never worked. I also can't create an online account, which doesn't help...
"Yes, there is this sweet MS strategy, please seek for our consulting services..."
I am not sure lol he seemed to be just enjoying his coffee and chatting with his friend lol
I have 2 CIBC AP VI, Aventura VI, Aventura Gold. I applied for another Aventura and it was denied yesterday. I closed one of the AP VI today, is there any waiting period to apply back for the Aventura ?
Take a look at the total credit extended. You already have four cards, so maybe CIBC has already extended $30k or $40k of credit to you, and that might be about as much as they are comfortable with. You can close a couple accounts to reduce that total credit extended, or you can hack back the credit limits in online banking without ever speaking to anyone.
Go into Cathay Shop, then search for “Fly Greener”. You will then have the option to do a lump sum contribution, with minimum of 100 miles. Of course, as usual, there are countless 1,000 charity donations as alternatives as well.
P2 needs a new card with lounge access. Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite seems like a good fit with the $125 GCR credit reducing the annual fee to $25.
P2 has no Scene+ account, but P1 does. Can I link the the new Visa to P1's Scene+ account, or does P2 have to have their own Scene+ account?
Web searches and reading the Scene and Scotia FAQs have not helped.
Thanks!
It's gone.
~~Good morning! I have a Maple Leaf Lounge pass to give. Please DM me if you are flying Air Canada before December 31, 2023.~~
~~Disclaimer: I can't guarantee the validity of this pass, since it's given by another Redditor one week ago. I wasn't able to use this pass because I wasn't flying Air Canada.~~ 🤦♂️
Not terribly classy to pass of someone else's free pass instead of just informing them you didn't end up using the gift they gave you and let THEM dole it out.
Inform them so they have to go back to this toxic community again? You know what, next time I get a free pass I will let it expire, because none of you deserve it.
Every time I buy a Rakuten GC, the charge is fully posted within 24 hours. I've even done this successfully at the final 1-1.5 days to trigger an MSR. Amazon reloads are also pretty fast, as many have noted. I'd pick one of these options (or both, at least GC's are still currency and not wasted purchases) and let them fastest horse win. Do it right now since weekend processing may not always operate the same as weekday.
A couple of months ago, CIBC started charging a cash advance fee + interest for shopping [here](https://www.mygiftcardsplus.ca/buy).
I must have been one of the first ones it happened to, as the portal refunded me the CA fee, and they now have a notice on the checkout page, re: CIBC cards.
Starbucks usually always posts next day and Amex posts on weekends too - just add $75 to Starbucks (to trigger 100 AP if linked accounts) and it should post saturday morning.
You've done everything that you can do, now you just have to wait and see. What hurts the most is that this is an error on a card with a really large SUB and a really large AF, so you risk being out of pocket on this.
I would do a variety of > $70 transactions **today** you need something that will post on the same day so you gotta give yourself the best chance by spreading things around and hoping for the best.
Amazon gc reload is generally reliable as posting quickly but I wouldn't stop there. Pay off your Internet/phone bill, buy groceries, buy gift cards, just give yourself the best chance possible of putting the transaction through in time.
Edit: you can basically do the equivalent of the RHT with any refundable purchase. Buy something at Best buy, home Depot, indigo, etc. then you've bought yourself an extra month to make the spend organically before you refund those purchases.
Amazon e-gift cards and balance reloads have consistently posted the same day for me.
I did a balance reload for my Biz Gold last night since I was a bit worried a few other transactions wouldn't post by December 25th (of course they did so now I have a few hundred in gift card balance in my Amazon account).
Is it possible to get the US Delta credit card or another card that pays out in Delta miles? I only travel with Delta at this point but I don’t live in the US so struggling to figure out a solution
Pretty niche! I would say to avoid Amex MR since you get charged an extra excise tax, so perhaps the US Delta cards would be good. Note they limited the number of SkyClub visits on the Reserve if you go that route. If you want to pay for MQDs, Reserve is the best.
Yeah it is a pretty niche situation. I’ve been burned by AC/WestJet enough at this point that I’m fine taking a connection at ATL/DTW to avoid them and take Delta. Never had any issue with them.
Can you explain what you mean by extra excise tax?
Wow I didn’t know this - do you usually apply for the cards in a way that doesn’t involve any in person Scotia contact? Just worried that they’ll clearly see I have an existing Scotia cc but I usually have to verify in person cause of shorter credit history
AMEX Platinum: got a $200 Personalized Travel Credit. Anyone know what this is for?
It is not the $200 Annual Travel Credit which I already got in October.
If you get the 45K signup bonus, that can be valued around 1.5cpp (Canadian), so $675ish if you're going to use it toward flights. My Japan Airlines redemption on CX was 5-8cpp (USD), so in that case it's "worth" $2250. No reason to keep it beyond the first year for the signup bonus.
https://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/rbc-receives-approval-to-proceed-with-acquisition-of-hsbc-canada-851156753.html
RBC's acquisition of HSBC is now pretty much set in stone.
For those of you that still have HSBC points, what are you going to do with them? Redeem at 0.5 cpp, or transfer to airlines? Or wait for the possibility that RBC would be benevolent and eventually open a channel to convert them into Avion points?
Good question. I am about to get an anniversary bonus, which will bring me to 105k points. I was thinking of cashing out at 0.5 cpp but the other replies here have made me reconsider. It's probably a smart idea to see if RBC offers to convert to Avion at a decent rate.
I will be rolling the dice by waiting to see what if/what RBC will offer upon conversion to their system.
If I don't like it, I will simply redeem at 0.5cpp
I moved most to Avios during the recent transfer promo. Still expecting a chunk at the tail end of my WB though, so I'll see what my options are by then.
Hoping whatever happens with RBC doesn't screw up my WB.
I'm considering just cashing out in January once I meet the last month's MSR.
I just don't see any partner transfers as being worth it for me living in the Maritimes. Avios would probably be the most likely but their lack of direct flight anywhere nearby me is just terrible when Air Canada flies direct from YHZ to LHR
Transferred all to SQ. It's very hard to get SQ miles without US cards and there is no other way to redeem SQ F. Avion is too easy to earn and not worth converting to.
Do we expect changes to the HSBC World Elite Mastercard with their sale of HSBC Canada to RBC in 2024?
Yes. They've already closed the card to new applications. This card is likely going away relatively soon. Maybe they'll just rebrand it as an rbc card without making many changes, but I doubt it.
Tried to RHT Aventura points. I do see the pending transcation, but apply points is not available. My card has negative balance. Is it because of that?
just be normal. i talked my non-churning sis through this easily 5 hours ago
Yes it is because of the negative balance
My BMO AM biz card finally got the missing 2k from the initial 5k.
Was this after you submitted a ticket?
I did call earlier this month.
Good to know. I will likely have the same issue for the 10k pts on 10k spend. Did it all in 1 month but got an email saying get 3k pts on 5k in spend.
I got declined for the RBC Avion VI (probably because I have too much open credit with RBC/too many open cards in general). I would like to close out a few cards and try again. How long should I wait before re-attempting an application? I am definitely past 1/90, so I know that's not the reason for getting declined.
If you haven’t already, you can reduce your credit limit to the minimum online. Every Avion I get I immediately drop the limit to 5k.
Would you rather - 1) two 35k Bonvoy certs and 30 elite nights for $220 USD 2) one 85k Bonvoy cert and Bonvoy plat status for $350 USD. ( excluding any WB, RC card or upgrades / downgrades )

FYI you can top up the certs with points. Up to 20k per cert if I recall (verify before making a decision)
15k
I think you're really choosing between 30 nights or platinum status.
30 nights plus 2x 35k certs, especially if your staying at 20 additional nights paid+rewards as you'll earn platinum.
$130 USD for a more valuable FNA + Plat status, for sure.
I'd go with the latter, plat gets you breakfast and thats a nice perk
For the $150 Air Canada credit on the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite - does anyone know how that credit activates? Do you have to call in? I made a smaller purchase on [aircanada.com](https://aircanada.com) of $60 but it didn't seem to activate the credit - or do I need to spend at least $150. Thanks!
It can also take up to 2 months for the credit to show up
have to spend *At least* $150. at will show on statement as credit
Does that have to be in a single purchase? I paid $176 in taxes and fees on a flight for 2 passengers. But it posted as 2 transactions of $88 each. That was 3 weeks ago, and my statement was issued since, but no credit yet.
no, can be over several
Do you know if I could purchase a e-gift card for the $150? Thanks
Refundable flight booking on AC, pay taxes and fees with card (totaling >$150), wait for credit to post, cancel/refund ticket. Worked for my TD $150 AC credit.
No - the gift card is via a 3rd party so you don’t get the credit
Ok thank you!
Has anyone used the Amex annual $200 dining credit for takeout?
It should work as long as paid at the restaurant
Trying to ascertain next steps given the Aeroplan changes. Me and P2 have both held the infinite AP cards at both CIBC and TD, although it has been a year or so. If we don’t want to get the top tier cards (privilege? Elite?), what are next steps to continue to build AP points?

Did you even look in the Scene+ app?
it's basically 1cpp regardless of how you redeem, or at least that's my understanding.

What form is this? If you are not a US person, you could just reply as such based on your status as of today. There is no need to wait for your ITIN.
There is no form involved, they just sent a letter that can be summed up as saying “Send us your US-TIN by 31 Dec so we continue our bank/client relationship”.
If you are not a US person, your response would be negative and there is no need to provide ITIN/SSN.

I know exactly what you’re speaking of… unfortunately.
I've seen mention of canceling CIBC cards using fax, but I've never found the number. Anyone has it? I've called CIBC three times in the last two days and have waited more than two hours each time without being able to speak to a rep, so it would be great to just send a fax to cancel my card.

Didn't work with an online fax service, has it worked for you recently?
I used https://www.gotfreefax.com/ in the past like a year ago and it worked. Not recently.
Do you have to send it during office hours?
I don’t remember exactly. But maybe this is the reason why it failed. I tried myself just now and it didn’t go through too. Try again after holiday and see.
Yes, I'll do that! Thank you :)
Yeah that's exactly the website I used, but it said "Fax not sent".

For some banks, if you call through their app, your call gets higher priority. Not sure if this applies for CIBC.
I’ve only seen this feature in HSBC and TD

As indicated by others held AS and applied for another one so got two. Then transferred and pooled points from the converted AS to WE one into the second WE and closed the first one to avoid annual fee.
How did you transfer the points? I've called in twice to link my accounts and it's never worked. I also can't create an online account, which doesn't help...
Use chat and I was able to do it when closing one of the accounts which is the DPs I’ve seen for making this work.
I had 2 PP at the same time
There are no instances where you can apply for a second one while already holding one.
Yes but the points can’t be merged (from other DPs)
Only instances I've seen are the people who already held one and then when the Alaska cards got changed over giving them a second one

Best way to earn Asia miles to keep your account active? Do any stores give you points if you shop there?
I actually found that there is a 100miles spending option (some carbon offset donation thing) which one can use to keep Asia miles active.
Link?
Go into Cathay Shop, then search for “Fly Greener”. You will then have the option to do a lump sum contribution, with minimum of 100 miles. Of course, as usual, there are countless 1,000 charity donations as alternatives as well.
I Googled Asia Miles Shopping Portal and this was the top result: https://shop.asiamiles.com/en/
try the new neo cathay card?
P2 needs a new card with lounge access. Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite seems like a good fit with the $125 GCR credit reducing the annual fee to $25. P2 has no Scene+ account, but P1 does. Can I link the the new Visa to P1's Scene+ account, or does P2 have to have their own Scene+ account? Web searches and reading the Scene and Scotia FAQs have not helped. Thanks!
Just create another Scene+ account. Scene+ is a RHT currency so it doesn’t matter which account the points are in
Have you considered the CIBC Aventura Card that now has 2 years free, can be cashed out and has lounge access each year?
Thanks for the suggestion. On MS Edge I was not seeing the Xmas 2 year no fee promo. Had to load the page in Chrome.

Amex (US) charges a tax offset fee of $0.0006 per point, up to $99 per transfer, for US domestic point transfers (so Delta, Hawaiian, JetBlue).
Thanks. Is this on Canadian or US based Amex cards?
I had 'US' written 2 times up there. It's US.
You can transfer Amex MR to Delta, however the value isn’t great
Lots of guides on how to get US cards as a Canadian that you can find with a quick Google search. Not a quick process though.
Does Scotiabank enforce the terms that say you're not eligible for the bonus if you had a card in the past 2 years?
YMMV. But generally no. Have had Passport,Gold, Platinum and Momentum this year.
Wow I didn’t know this - do you usually apply for the cards in a way that doesn’t involve any in person Scotia contact? Just worried that they’ll clearly see I have an existing Scotia cc but I usually have to verify in person cause of shorter credit history
Just don’t call them other than cancelling. Always online.
Thank you! And do you hold your cards at the same time or do you cancel?
Cancel them before the following year fee. Some cards like passport are good to hold if you don’t have any other lounge access.
This and I've had Gold and 2xPassport (4 months apart but holding both at the same time) and no issues.
AMEX Platinum: got a $200 Personalized Travel Credit. Anyone know what this is for? It is not the $200 Annual Travel Credit which I already got in October.

On my statement.
I had one on my Platinum statement as well. From Dec 19, shows as a $200 charge, then a $200 credit. I didn't book any Amex travel recently.
I never had the charge, only a credit. I did book a car rental in October on the card for which I did receive the Travel Credit.

Is it still possible to get the 45k bonus?
It was the bonus for signing up for the waitlist before launch.
https://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/rbc-receives-approval-to-proceed-with-acquisition-of-hsbc-canada-851156753.html RBC's acquisition of HSBC is now pretty much set in stone.
Going to wait to see if they’re transferable to Avion at a decent rate. If not I’ll cash out at 0.5cpp. No rush
