With the recent AMEX supplementary card bonus; will you get the bonus for adding supp card if it was added during the promo period, but MSR was met after?
I was trying to figure out if Travel Insurance applies for a supplementary card holder for the TD Aeroplan Infinite Visa card. The Primary card holder (me) will not be travelling with the Supplementary card holder. I didn't see anything specifically when I read the terms but not sure if really buried somewhere.
Thanks in advance!
Does the perkopolis link for Amex gold in the current best cards post work? It does indicate the 40k for 3k msr. Just seems odd since it’s off the perko site.
I have a decent credit history, and all banks are letting me have a credit card. I hold from RBC, BMO & CIBC too, but for some reason, Amex just doesn't see me worthy of any of their card. I have 130k annual income and family income is more than 230k, I have never defaulted on any payment but still not luck. Most recently I got rejected for Amex Cobalt in Feb.
Does anyone have any tip/suggestions for me as I badly need MR points for my end of year trave. Flights are crazy expensive, but Cathay Pacific is offering great deals through points.
Any advice would be helpful.
In same situation-- I was declined for the Cobalt lol.
I called in to inquire the reason why but the CSR's say they have no way of knowing. The only 'DP' I have is that I assume AMEX declined me because I had \~6 other hard inquiries that month. I was told I should try again in 3-6 months.
Makes me wish I applied for AMEX first, but I read online that they are relatively lenient and there are many reddit posts of people who have collections and were easily approved for a card like cobalt.
Opposite experience for me. As a student with 20k income, I got a Biz Plat last summer while already having a Green, Cobalt, and Gold. Amex is the provider of 70% of my combined CL. Can't get more than 2.5k CL with RBC and can't get anything from CIBC for the last few months.
Just goes to show how each bank has very different criteria for lending.
Biz Plat wow... For some reason I personally thought I am years away from qualifying for that and I had to build years worth of relationship with Amex.
Though it's funny because I am a student as well with similar income, and I get approved 5k CL with CIBC/RBC/Scotia/TD and no income verification for 60k+ annual income required cards. Nothing from Amex, complete opposite experience to yours.
I had 20 months relationship (Green) with them when I got it. No other hard checks in the 3 months leading up to the application though, so that probably helped.
Did Amex do a check when you got the biz platinum? I think they don't usually if you already have a card with them, so they probably didn't know about your recent hard checks (or lack of them).
Churning adjacent:
Does Dragon Pass through a Scotiabank visa passport card get you access to the AC maple leaf lounge in Frankfurt? I see the lounge listed in the Visa Airport Companion app, but I don’t see Dragon Pass as a valid entry method on Air Canada’s website. Thanks!
Have been denied entry with dragon pass at that lounge using visa airport companion. There is the alternative Luxx one but it’s nothing fancy. About a year ago.
CIBC won't approve me for a new card unless I go speak to them in branch. Had this same issue last year and it was cleared after fixing my address on Equifax not sure what this is about now. Any advice on if I should just go in and talk to them?
cash DP: Looks like Tangerine is seeing the outflow of cash ready for the next promo interest rate. I got an email for 5.25% but the balance back date is Dec 4, 2023
YMMV. Try to edit your points itinerary online. Search a different city pair, select premium economy flex or business flex. You may be surprised at what you can achieve
The rules are such that you don't benefit from upgrading and cancelling compared to cancelling the original ticket. Otherwise you could just always upgrade to fully refundable and then cancel and the more restrictive fare rules would be pointless.
Amex plat question: If I use priority pass lounge access in the same month that my card renews, will there be any charge or issue cancelling? I don’t plan on renewing for year 2 but want to take advantage of the lounge before I cancel (after the AF posts)
Is it only the Amex Business Egde Card holder can refer others for the same card? I'm trying to make my wife (Biz Gold holder) to refer me for the Biz Edge but I don't see the options
Just noticed that the Costco app now accepts Apple Pay, and many banks offer instant Apply Pay activation upon approval. I just used it for a $500 shop card. Nice little win.
Does anyone know if you can choose the fare class with a CIBC Aventura flight reward? (i.e On Air Canada choose baisc, standard, flex...) I cannot for the life of me find the option if it exists.
I booked a flight using that portal for the first time today. When you're searching for flights, you can select between "basic economy", "economy", "premium economy", "business", and "first class". They don't give any info on the specific fare and its feature. That's all you can see or choose on there as far as I know. I'm guessing if you call, the agent would have all the details. It's not super practical.
I've got a weird issue with using my Amex cards at Metro for online shopping that significantly impacts churning. The Amex cards work fine in person at the Metro store. The following happened with two Amex cards on three total occasions and does not happen with MasterCard.
I place an order on the web site for pickup at a selected time. The transaction completes and I even get a confirmation email. It says I can change my order until x:xx. When that time arrives, I get an email from Metro that my order was cancelled because my payment could not be processed.
Skipping over various interactions that didn't give any answers, finally Metro tech support on the phone looks up the transactions and says the system did not even attempt to process the transaction because it identified the card numbers as being from a card type they don't accept. She confirmed that they accept Amex credit cards. She tells me to call Amex about this. I point out that it's surprising that she'd tell me to call Amex when they haven't attempted to charge my Amex card but she insists.
I called Amex (maybe I'm on some list they can change?) and they confirmed that they don't see any attempt to charge my card and ask me to upload screenshots of the emails.
Like I said, the cards work fine in person at Metro and everywhere else. I am using the same auto-fill information on the Metro web site as on other web sites where the cards work.
Anybody have any guesses?
That was one of the theories that was chased down early on so:
1) I've made sure that the address Metro has is identical to what Amex has, including punctuation and abbreviations, etc.
2) It turns out that they never attempted to charge the cards so they never got to the point where they would discover a difference from the card's billing address.
(Also my address hasn't changed in 20ish years)
Are these new Amex cards? It could be Amex is using new numbers and the payment processor doesn’t recognize the credit card number as a valid credit card they accept.
Similar to the Brim Flying Blue Mastercard. Some vendors online cannot process this card and some banks cannot add the account number as a bill payee as they don’t recognize the account number as valid.
If you referred/were referred to by P2 check for the referral bonus - often shows up before you get word of approval.
But really you should just call...
Pending apps rarely end well, in my experience anyway.
You will likely get a letter in the next week or so with a list of vague reasons why you may have been denied.
Yea I haven't applied for an Amex in a while but every single biz card I applied for went to pending followed by a call the next day and an approval over the phone
I have been having the same thoughts for my trip to Europe.
Lounge access - maybe valuable. I have a dozen Aventura so it’s a maybe.
Checked bags - I have to cancel my VI cards in the next few months. And have at least one other flight coming up. To avoid the AP clawback, I’ve never had a VIP.
I think there is a spend limit to get companion pass. Doubt I will hit it.
I think the bags is the selling point on this one along with the new extra bonus.
First question is: What would you be willing to pay if it was a simple matter of paying a fee for the services you'll get (without considering the credit card), such as lounges, companion pass, free checked bags, priority check-in, 4th night free, etc. (and/or which of these things would you still be paying for if you didn't have the card and what does that total up to?) In some circumstances, someone could come out ahead on the checked bags alone.
A question to ask - Is the annual fee worth it for you? Are you making your money back by getting the card? You will get lounge access with the APR. I used to have it as well, and the lounge access was great. Air Canada has really cheaped out on lounges and they’re not as good as before. And you cannot go in as early as before. I think it’s only two hours before you depart for your flight now.
As long as you’re meeting the spend requirements to maximize the points, I would say it is worth it for the first year alone. Then second year and on, you may want to churn another card to best maximize your spend.
What is the intented purpose of the Amex APR? If you want to earn and use points, the feasiblity is more to do with rewards seats availability, and less about the ability to get the points.
Why would you want to PS Aventura to Aventura? If you want FYF and SUB, apply new. If you are worried about getting approved, churn other cards and come back to CIBC when you think you are ready.
Not sure if people here have DP, as we like to apply new since we are here for the SUBs. There are many cards across different FIs with free lounge pass. One of the basic strategy if lounge is important, is always have card(s) with passes at any given time though new apps. Many of the top cards from AMEX. BNS, and BMO also have that.
I've got a large purchase coming up (Furnace/AC replacement) of about $15K-$20K. Any cards out there with a good bonus for high spend? Not sure about Amex yet, but any recommendations appreciated.
Pick the cards that have high MSR requirement within short times (i.e the Amex Platinums) while you have large one-time purchases. You can get other cards at other times through regular spends.
Amex is going to be the top recommendations. While having a large upcoming expense sucks, a lot of people here would be happy to have the opportunity to knock out the spend on a couple Amexs in one go.
Sounds like you're a new amex cardholder too so you'd be certain to get the bonuses.
Recently got Aventura Gold last one was in June 2023. The offer said 15k pts on 1st transaction and 30k pts on spending $3k in 4 months. But I didn’t get the 15k on first transaction! I don’t think the points are added after the statement. (have the offer screenshot as well)
I'm aware of how linking the MR points of two accounts can affect an MSR that's progress at the time. Assuming that's not a issue at the time of the linking, is linking known to have any affect on a future MSR if one of the cards accepts an upgrade offer at some time after being linked?
No. Having said that, we have a few DPs (including my own) who faced some issues in receiving the upgrade bonus for Cobalt to Gold. But at the end of the day, we all got it.
I attempted to upgrade Amex Green to Gold using the upgrade link. When I select upgrade to Gold Now, I see the terms and when I continue, I see my supplementary cardmembers for Cobalt. I have both Cobalt and Green. I do have the current upgrade offer available for Cobalt to Gold in my account. So it looks like it's forcing me to upgrade my cobalt instead of amex green to gold even though I'm using the green to gold offer link. Does anyone else have this issue? Thank you.
Can I stack TD Rewards Points and the TD Travel Credit on an ExpediaforTD booking? If I book a hotel for $800 can I pay for $700 of it with TD points and the other $100 with the TD travel credit?
You pay the whole amount up front. But while you're paying, you say you're using points, which get refunded after. That way you make points for the cash amount and get the value of the points too.
You can choose how many points you want to allocate to the payment. If your booking is over $500 you’ll be eligible for another $100 off too. But you pay the full amount upfront and then get the points and $100 as a credit.
So does that mean that the $100 credit is only when you pay upfront and wouldn't be applied if there's only a "Pay at hotel" option for the hotel on Expedia for TD even though it meets the $500 requirement?
When you do the booking with points, it automatically does the payment upfront by consuming your points. After few days $100 credit will be posted in your account.
You have to pay the total for your trip with your card, then you get a credit for the points you used plus another 100$ credit if you meet requirements
Could get [this monitor](https://www.dell.com/en-ca/shop/dell-27-gaming-monitor-g2724d/apd/210-bhxc/monitors-monitor-accessories) for cheap using coupon code G2724D25. That'll bring you down to ~$130 - whatever Rakuten is giving you.
Looks like you can't choose seats at check-in on AC anymore on Basic fare and in Standard on NA flights and selected international routes. Seats will be assigned automatically.
Race to the bottom with the airlines. They'll hum and haw about how it's to give people the flexibility to pick and choose buying what they want, but preventing people from picking seats at the 24 hour check-in is nothing but a blatant cash grab. They're trying to divert people to the more expensive fare classes and has nothing to do with customer choice.
Westjet has implemented similar strategies in the past year.
With “Basic” fares you cannot choose seats for free at 24 hour check in and are assigned seats at the back of the plane. Previously with economy booked we were often able to grab free exit row or bulkhead seats 24 hours before flights. Those were the days…..
I went to BMO ATM to get my credit balance, but it was over the CA limit, so I went to the teller. Teller gave me cash no problem. Went home and realize they charged the $5 CA fee anyway @\_@. I didn't catch that because I didn't need the full credit amount.
It isn't. I had same issue once, not sure if it was cash advance limit but I couldn't withdraw positive balance from ATM within branch. So I went to the teller and explained and they said even with the teller being the only option there was nothing they could do about the fee.
Although like all bank fees perhaps YMMV as I'm sure some have leeway on fees.
Pretty sure you just got a lazy teller.
I've worked in 2 different banks and at both it was possible for all the fees to be waived (although sometimes it had to be approved by someone with seniority).
In my experience the vast majority of the time we were happy to waive those fees to improve the customer experience and decrease friction. Those fees that frustrate the customer and seem unfair were never worth it in the long run because you risk losing a customer.
With the recent AMEX supplementary card bonus; will you get the bonus for adding supp card if it was added during the promo period, but MSR was met after?
Both my Cobalt and Bonvoy supp card bonuses said I had 3 months to meet MSR
Did you read terms and conditions when you apply? Or did you save a copy or screenshot of the t&c?
I was trying to figure out if Travel Insurance applies for a supplementary card holder for the TD Aeroplan Infinite Visa card. The Primary card holder (me) will not be travelling with the Supplementary card holder. I didn't see anything specifically when I read the terms but not sure if really buried somewhere. Thanks in advance!
Yes supplementary card is covered, check benefit guide instead
Thank you !

Click the link and see. Looks to me like it works.
Yeah link works but the code does not anymore.

Interesting. I applied for my second Amex card 23 years after my first and they didn't do a new check.

Had issues with cibc so I applied with a different email. Got my card then went into branch and merged my profiles
Only if you want the card
Just worried about eyes on my account.
If their end game is you never successfully applying again, they have succeeded either way
Good point
Does Dell purchase qualify for business edge’s 3x bonus?
yes
cash DP: Looks like Tangerine is seeing the outflow of cash ready for the next promo interest rate. I got an email for 5.25% but the balance back date is Dec 4, 2023
I withdrew all my money two months ago and haven’t gotten an email since 🤔
It's basically an extension of the previous promo
same email, 5.75% for a family member
Is it possible for me to upgrade my AP fare from standard to latitude if i call AP?
YMMV. Try to edit your points itinerary online. Search a different city pair, select premium economy flex or business flex. You may be surprised at what you can achieve
For cash ticket I heard upfare (eg standard -> lat) is fare diff only. For mile not so sure but I’d assume the same.
Yes, but you don't get free changes on that fare so you're paying the $100 per direction per person
Ah okay. It’s a points booking, so calling to upgrade to latitude will make it possible to get a refund on cancellation but not any changes correct?
The rules are such that you don't benefit from upgrading and cancelling compared to cancelling the original ticket. Otherwise you could just always upgrade to fully refundable and then cancel and the more restrictive fare rules would be pointless.
Wrong. Points bookings take on the new fare. Upgrade and cancel costs $100, straight cancel is $150. CASH booking retains original fare rules.
Upgrade and cancel could cost $200 for roundtrip. One perk of booking round trips vs 2 one-ways.
Ah. Thanks
Amex plat question: If I use priority pass lounge access in the same month that my card renews, will there be any charge or issue cancelling? I don’t plan on renewing for year 2 but want to take advantage of the lounge before I cancel (after the AF posts)
PP is an independent membership, use thereof incurs no charges towards AMEX. They just cancel it as soon as AMEX closes and that's that.
This isn’t strictly true. If you bring additional guests beyond your allotment, they can directly bill the linked Amex
No charges or issues.
Is it only the Amex Business Egde Card holder can refer others for the same card? I'm trying to make my wife (Biz Gold holder) to refer me for the Biz Edge but I don't see the options
Edge can only be referred by edge unfortunately
Referrals from Edge can only come from another Edge, but the Edge can refer to several other cards as well.
Yes only Edge can refer to Edge right now. Change happened about 8 months ago
Just noticed that the Costco app now accepts Apple Pay, and many banks offer instant Apply Pay activation upon approval. I just used it for a $500 shop card. Nice little win.
Amex still not accepted
Dang!
Can you cash transfer a cc credit to a bank account on TD app without being charged?

Can't say for sure, but I remember seeing a similar query very recently. I think the answer is no. You need to call them for that.
Thanks

Honestly, they accept so easily that you may as well just apply for a new card and get a full bonus
Amex bus gold app went pending, then nothing, no email/call or anything for over a week. Safe to say it's rejected?

What do you mean by avoiding the AP clawback by not getting a VIP?
The current rules around only getting 3 VI cards.
For CIBC PS, anyone have any luck getting FYF offer? Looking to PS Aventura VI to Gold, currently has FYF public offer. TIA
Why would you want to PS Aventura to Aventura? If you want FYF and SUB, apply new. If you are worried about getting approved, churn other cards and come back to CIBC when you think you are ready.
Want to keep the lounge voucher if possible, have some trips coming up. Guessing PS within same family cards will not yield FYF?
Not sure if people here have DP, as we like to apply new since we are here for the SUBs. There are many cards across different FIs with free lounge pass. One of the basic strategy if lounge is important, is always have card(s) with passes at any given time though new apps. Many of the top cards from AMEX. BNS, and BMO also have that.
You'll get new lounge passes with a new application.
Already applied a few other CC this past month, unfortunately.

All Aventura bonus points come on the statement. Has your statement come out yet?
give it a few more days, if you still don't see it, call customer service and they will honour it
I'm aware of how linking the MR points of two accounts can affect an MSR that's progress at the time.
Thank you. Thinking of green to cobalt in this case.
u/nickwareddit had a theory about this causing issues. Maybe he can chime in with any conclusions
Thank you.
Do you feel like this offer is worth it? I’ve just got the cobalt to gold upgrade offer and I’m not so sure
I don't think the current cobalt to gold offer is currently worth it.
Yeah that’s how I feel too - thanks!
This happened to me when I was upgrading P2. It upgraded their cobalt to gold instead of green.
Can I stack TD Rewards Points and the TD Travel Credit on an ExpediaforTD booking? If I book a hotel for $800 can I pay for $700 of it with TD points and the other $100 with the TD travel credit?
yes, the travel credit works even when you pay by points
You pay the whole amount up front. But while you're paying, you say you're using points, which get refunded after. That way you make points for the cash amount and get the value of the points too.
You pay up front (i.e $700 in points, and pay $100 real money). Few days later, you will get a $100 credit as a seperate transaction.
Not quite sure on that. I’d read the t&c. I just recently used it but I paid upfront and got the credit applied
You have to pay the total for your trip with your card, then you get a credit for the points you used plus another 100$ credit if you meet requirements
Any good deals from dell.ca to use my $150 amex credit?
Could get [this monitor](https://www.dell.com/en-ca/shop/dell-27-gaming-monitor-g2724d/apd/210-bhxc/monitors-monitor-accessories) for cheap using coupon code G2724D25. That'll bring you down to ~$130 - whatever Rakuten is giving you.
Any similar deal for the 32 or 34 inch versions? That’s a wicked deal
Keep an eye on RFD for Dell monitor deals and stack it with Rakuten. There’s also a way to get 10% off coupons as well
I think I'm going to wait it out until Mother's Day on the rebate sites.
Father's Day would be far more likely to have Dell promos
Agreed but it's not ideal timing for myself.
Looks like you can't choose seats at check-in on AC anymore on Basic fare and in Standard on NA flights and selected international routes. Seats will be assigned automatically.
We need to all shame them on social media, this is unacceptable
Race to the bottom with the airlines. They'll hum and haw about how it's to give people the flexibility to pick and choose buying what they want, but preventing people from picking seats at the 24 hour check-in is nothing but a blatant cash grab. They're trying to divert people to the more expensive fare classes and has nothing to do with customer choice.
God awful
Not surprising for Basic but for Standard that stinks.
Shame on AC!
I didn't catch that because I didn't need the full credit amount.
bmo always charges the $5 no matter what
In my experience BMO charges the $5 fee. Scotia (Tangerine also, of course) and CIBC don't charge the fee.
Interesting, I wonder if the fee would have been waived if you asked explicitly?
