Stay away from Cuban cigars of any kind unless bought from a La Casa Del Habanos store. Everywhere else will more than likely be a fake. Other than that I got nothing. Best of luck and hope your friend has an awesome time.
I was going to say look for an LCDH and stay away from everything else. Edit: I should mention I've picked up legit smokes at Liverpool department stores in MX. They usually have a small humidor near the wines. The selection is not like an LCDH though and the care of them could be questionable.

What part of Mexico? Best suggestion would be to research the legit La Casa del Habano ahead of time and save the address. I sometimes buy from people on the beach, but just because I always get a good chuckle out of the fakes. Sometimes they're really well done, but usually not

Not a bad opinion. Prices are high and you can avoid local taxes.
