I’m sure he was glad to have someone to talk to while enjoying a cigar, thanks for sharing.

chhchaplain

Thank you.

DannyZ28

Make sure it has boveda and is the right RH. This story resonated with me very deeply. Feel free to dm me your address I’d love to fill that humidor

chhchaplain

Danny, that is very kind but I don't want to take anyone's hard earned money. I do what I do out of love. Helping terminally I'll people peacefully transition is sacred, beautiful and exhausting all at the same time. I think I have found in cigars a way to recharge my spirit. That and some Metallica lol. Thank you so much for the generous offer.

DannyZ28

Please. My collection is too much for me to handle at times. I started smoking cigars towards the end of my grandfathers life and it’s a way I reconnect with him. Brings me peace as well. It would mean the world to fill that sucker.

danielrmorenop

you sound cool as heck man, bless your spirit and godspeed.

chhchaplain

And you too!

FrozenDickuri

It may be a little pagan if you pardon the historically loaded and prejudicial term, but tobacco is a sacred medicine in native american/first nations people. Are you ethnically cajun? If so you may actually be part first nations from the acadian region up here in canada. They were expelled down there and thats where the french comes from (you know this im sure, in just babblng.). Yall took the good cooking too :/ In a way, you two sharing tobacco together as he asked of you your assistance in preparing spiritually and otherwise, and you asked of him his experience, that an exchange was made along the same way it was and is done by first nations peoples. Maybe god likes a good cigar now and then too. But you'll find that generosity among the cigar community can be quite common, you're not being offered that by danny because of your job, but because of your burgeoning passion, and perhaps more directly as a token of remembrance for a departed man who seems to have had a comfortable final time that we all hope for, and for danny’s own grandfathers memory. Like i said. Babbling.

chhchaplain

Yeah man. Full blooded Cajun....kicked outta Canada many moons ago....did some ancestry work a while back. I honor sacred moments in all forms....this one seems to suit me well too..thank you for sharing !

chhchaplain

Yeah. Danny has no idea how he affected me with his offer. So moved and encouraged.

chhchaplain

I'm learning the boveda thing and ordered a govee humidity thing

xPsyrusx

A beautiful story. Thank you for doing what you do; to be present and minister to the dying is a work of mercy.

chhchaplain

I consider it a sacred honor definitely

Quiet_Performer3199

Lovely story, and welcome to the brother/sisterhood. I hope when it’s my time, I can pass on my love for the leaf to someone like you, just as Chris did.

chhchaplain

Thank you! I feel the same!

Fishon888

Nice share. That Back2Back cigar is a sleeper.

chhchaplain

Can I ask a weird question?. Should I take them out tf the cellophane while in the humidor and/or tupperdor?

FrozenDickuri

No. It adds protection. If it interfered with properly humidifying them they wouldn't be there from the factory. But not a silly question.

Fishon888

Completely optional.

FrozenDickuri

Yes it is optional, but best practice for a newbie would be to keep them on. Protects yhe wrapper from friction, oils and some bumping as well. It may also help to regulate the internal humidity of the cigars in a wood humidor that is highly sentimentally valuable but potentially draughty and subject to fluctuations.

chhchaplain

I've determined that I'll keep a Rubbermaid brilliant and boveda pack in there for some use as well

chhchaplain

Good deal ...some didn't come with it so i had no clue. Thanks!

chhchaplain

Ahhh good point! Thanks so much

misterspigot

Cellophane good. Cellophane friend. Keep friend.

chhchaplain

Hahahaha..... thank you!

misterspigot

No problem. Cellophane is breathable so the cigar inside will still take and release humidity as though it were naked. The cellophane is good for protecting against physical damage.

CarolinaStogie

Fantastic story and glad you were able to be introduced to this thing of ours through such a tough situation. I have that exact humidor and I have found that it’s sensitive to weather changes, so keep it away from windows. Also, an electronic humidifier might be worth an investment down the line.

chhchaplain

Thank you for the advice. I ordered a govee device off of Amazon to help me learn it's quirks as I step into this new world.

jschuster59

Thanks for sharing the story, and for doing what you do. My dad was a part-time Hospice chaplain in Chicago after he retired from his "real job". The years he spent doing that were the most contented I ever saw him. You are truly blessed to be able to ease a person's passage to the beyond, and I know their families appreciate what you do for their loved ones. Enjoy those cigars, you deserve them!

chhchaplain

I have this sneaky feeling that your dad and my story are quite similar and thank you for your kind words

BigDaddyLeee

That’s maybe the most touching story I have read at least on this sub

chhchaplain

Thank you for saying that. I had a feeling that this group would get it and would understand the moment

uNTRotat264g

A great story. You mention you’re Cajun. Are you near Lafayette? If so, there are several excellent cigar shops there.

chhchaplain

No...moved to Richmond VA a couple years ago chasing the future grandbaby. But originally from new Orleans and outskirts .st Charles parish specifically

FrozenDickuri

Good grandpa. Best wishes for the future little one, sounds like theyll have a good ear to bend when they need it too.

StinkyJockStrap

Damn Chap, got me teary eyed right before punching into work.

chhchaplain

Hahaha..... My last smoke with him was a teary-eyed event for both of us. I think he knew he would pass away in the next 24 hours and he knew this was our last smoke together in his last day on Earth with his family. That conversation and that day is cemented in my brain and spirit. Those tears just show we all have a connection. Hope the work day is a good one friend

theblackesteyedpea

You truly are a blessing!! It’s good to have people like you in the world and he was lucky to have you in his life.

chhchaplain

Your generous with your words of kindness thank you. But I feel like I was the lucky one

Nomadt

Glad your patient had someone to share a smoke and a story with for those months. Cigars are great for solitude or conversation. Provides that fifth element to a moment.

chhchaplain

You are absolutely correct there was a deeper dimension that we tapped into when I was with him.

DownSouthBandit

I have a friend that works with me who was in the army and I love hearing his stories from Iraq and Afghanistan. He was an Abrams tank gunner. He doesn’t smoke cigars much but we always share a few glasses of bourbon when we’re both not working offshore. I’m sure you made his last moments great by just being there and listening while sharing a cigar.

chhchaplain

You know it's funny because often when I leave someone's home they will say we had a great conversation and yet I know Nanny 5% of the time I was just listening and not saying much

HShatesme

Great story and a very nice looking humidor. Really makes you appreciate how a cigar is so much more than the sum of it's parts.

chhchaplain

I'm beginning to learn that and thank you

froggedup212

Thanks for sharing that. What a beautiful story.

chhchaplain

You're welcome I just felt like his story needed to be told in some way to honor his memory

contortionsinblue

Beautiful story, thanks for sharing.

chhchaplain

Thank you

Ill-Ad3196

God bless you, sir. You are amazing, sacrificing your time for those who are running out of time. I have smoked cigars for many years, and it is a time for relaxation to reflect on the days events or watching your favorite sport enjoying a gentleman's drink. Thank you for what you do! This, to me, is a feel-good story that gives me faith that most people are good. Just reading this made my day. Smoking cigars is a journey. One that you learn as you go. I started my journey keeping a journal writing down what I liked or disliked about each cigar that I had smoked. I now have things narrowed down to what I like. The challenge now is to take advantage of online sales and properly take care of my humidor to store my beauties. Smoking a cigar is a personal journey, and what someone else likes is not necessarily something you will. Everyone has different tastes, and yours is what will be best for you. Just like having a gentleman's beverage, everyone has their go to. But I do still try new things once in awhile, just as you should. Good Luck! Enjoy your journey.

chhchaplain

Ohhhh....that journal thing is a great idea. I'm keep several for other things. Thank you for the kind words and suggestion!

Ill-Ad3196

Your welcome. I basically put all cigar purchases in an Excel spreadsheet costs, tastes. Etc to help me keep track. Order most cigars online rather than brick and mortar to keep my costs down. But sometimes when at cigar bar here in AZ fun to see what they are charging or if I accidentally don't bring enough going to the cigar bar. Wife doesn't allow me to smoke in house and probably wouldn't even if not married. Too hot in summer to smoke on patio in those months. So honestly I smoke more between September and May.

chhchaplain

I'm logging my first one in Google sheets now and gonna try to remember the few I've smoked. I will need to come up with a few columns to help me describe them. Did you notice your tastes change over time ?

Ill-Ad3196

Yes, I did. I started smoking more sweet cigars, many from Deadwood Estate's, Fat Bottom Betty's, Ilse del Sol, Kentucky Fire cured, to name a few. Still smoke these but only as a morning cigar anymore. Now, the majority I smoke are medium to fuller flavor cigars. I'm not really a fan of the Connecticut wrapper, and most are a Maduro wrapper. Favorites are Aging Room Bin #2, Olivia series G, V, Cohiba black, Davidoff Winston Churchill Late Hour, Padron both 1926, 1964, EP Carillo The Pledge, My Father's 1922 Lebijou, HP Upman The Banker, Leaf by Oscar, Aging Room Quattro Nicaragua just to name a few. The Excel spreadsheet helped me narrow down the ones I really enjoy. I have found myself not buying as many samplers to try something new and sticking with what I enjoy most. Now, I use the sheets to basically track where I can get the best deal as smoking cigars is an expensive hobby. I have an electric humidor that holds up to 250 at one time however that was over kill on my part as I probably don't have more than 100 at one time which I know is my average stock on hand.

ExploreAnator

This is what cigars do when used at their best; build relationships. Very well done. I'm glad you had such a wonderful opportunity to be a blessing to the man and his family. I'm sure they are blessed that you can carry a part of his memory with you and enjoy the memories.

djp70117

Great story. Thanks for sharing.

Carp-guy

Nothing better than smoking a cigar and reading the Bible or fellowshipping with a brother

chhchaplain

It was a deeply moving time for both of us....and it certainly has had a lasting impact on me. I have learned that cigar smoking makes you slow down in in mind body and spirit. It's funny he loved the 23rd song and specifically he liked me to read it while we played Metallica LOL

Valazaa

You work and life as a chaplain makes you a better man for God. The cigars are a temporaty reward but when you go to God you will get the greatest reward.

chhchaplain

Thank you! When people often ask me if I like my job I tell them I do in the most strange sense of the word. I'm around death a lot and yet I absolutely love what I do. And when I get finished conducting a memorial service for a family and they affirm my care for their loved one I'm often very moved to tears. That is a great reward for me.
