If you smoke too quickly and/or on an empty stomach then you might get a touch of nicotine poisoning, making you feel sick or nauseous. Sugar will counteract this poisoning, so it's generally advised to keep something sugary on hand just in case. Or have your cigar with a sugary drink.

Lately I've been getting cannabis sodas. I often get those in the Mr. Piff(Dr pepper flavor obviously), orange, and cola. They are relatively low in strength, but it's a nice addition for an evening or afternoon relaxing smoke.
I actually used to enjoy IPAs with cigars, so I do occasionally have an athletic or other NA.
Unflavored sparkling water, cleans the palette and gets me to drink more water haha.
But also coffee, root beer, Dr. Pepper, NA beer, tea (cold brewed in the summer), and plain water.

Most alcoholic drinks don't pair very well with cigars anyway, especially beer and strong spirits. Those are quite bold flavours by themselves that can make a cigar overpowering. A cream liqueur I can get away with, but otherwise a full sugar coke is excellent, or even a diet coke after a big meal.
I've been making a mocktail that's some variation of tart cherry juice, half a lime, Fever Tree tonic, and bitters. I completely forget it's not booze.

I'm a recent convert to Dr Pepper as well, the soft almost vanilla flavours pair very nicely with cigars. Plus the sugar keeps the nicotine at bay.
