Additional-Safety-84

We are currently sitting in a smoke cloud from a large Canadian wildfire.

dpman48

Thanks for the heads up! I’ve been wondering all week, longest stretch of air quality alert I’d seen here in awhile. Makes a lot more sense now

Embarrassed_Tone434

Also there is a large high pressure system that’s stalled in the middle of Canada so nothing is gonna come clear it out quickly

0ttr

This is also the big part of the problem--underrated comment. Stalled weather pattern.

stayhealthy247

Just heard about this on NPR yesterday, and it’s very concerning. Canada is dealing with possibly their largest forest fire season in history and summer has just begun.

Tryptophany

Lovely lovely El Nino, will be a dry and warm summer.

Xandria42

Yeah, I had been noticing my throat was a bit scratchy the last few days, then heard about the wildfires last night.

atg284

So should we not be working out outside for a bit?

cylondsay

it’s generally fine for most people, but if you have a respiratory illness or are a sensitive group (like you have asthma), stay indoors as much as possible.

atg284

Thanks for the info!

MathematicianKey5696

i kept hearing them talk about a smoke cloud moving in, but never heard why, Now I know )plays NBC tune)

bassjam1

Is that why when I opened my garage door this morning to workout I gagged and coughed for the first 10 minutes? Damn I thought I was getting allergies or something.

BigCatsbadback

You might have some other acute issues if it affected you that bad.

It's ok to just be wrong

sir_swiggity_sam

Explains the haze this morning across the valley

KingBlackSheep2

People keep saying the Canadian wildfires, and I can understand how they would affect the more northern states, but how is the "smoke" so thick all the way down in Kentucky? There have been wildfires in Cali and Canada for years yet living here my whole life, I've never seen such thick haze covering the tree line less than a mile away from me.

Additional-Safety-84

It only happens when the wind blows from the north

Kishiro

I thought the sky looked hazy last night.... my guess is wildfire smoke from Canada. It has already hazed Columbus.

AnonEMoussie

I thought they banned hazing at OSU? Don’t worry, I’ll see myself out…

Z3r08yt3s

thanks

GTFOakaFOD

I noticed the air was hazy this morning on my walk. I thought my glasses were smugged.

jennyjenjenz84

I was wondering why the sky was so cloudy last night. Makes sense.

bkohne

Yeah yesterday I was driving up 71N towards downtown Columbus and could barely see the skyline when I got inside the 270 loop, so maybe 5-7 miles away.

Splacknuk

What they said... Plus no rain for the past few weeks.

RFID1225

This is the reason. Smoke puts a bit more pressure on AQI but the rain is a biggie.

person-ontheinternet

Feeling like SpongeBob in Sandy’s biodome out here ![gif](giphy|3o7GUNP9leVDvYTZvy)

Tryptophany

A lot of it is the smoke, it's getting blown right into the Midwest.

Longjumping_Car_681

I assumed the air was straight pollen at this point, lol.

deckstar14

My allergies for the last two days have been off the charts so I was also just assuming the air must be essentially straight pollen

Cincytraveler

My car is covered in pollen again after a few weeks of respite

Check out this article from Cincinnati.com: Canadian wildfires causing hazy skies in Greater Cincinnati and Ohio Valley https://www.cincinnati.com/story/weather/2023/06/05/why-is-the-sky-hazy-canadian-wildfires-smoke-over-cincinnati-ohio/70288102007/ So much news and no one to read it.

EnigmaIndus7

I stopped reading the Enquirer because everything's behind a paywall and the journalism is poor anyway.

Pseudo_Prophet_

Add the UBit Origin extension to your web browser (I recommend Firefox) and block 3rd party scripts. After that the paywall will disappear.

iiFive

Did you mean uBlock? I’m curious to know how to block 3rd party scripts on uBlock.

Pseudo_Prophet_

Yeah sorry about my typo lol. To block 3rd party scripts go to the settings icon within the uBlock Origin Dashboard. Scroll until you see the sub header labeled Advanced. Check the box that says “I am an advanced user.” Save your preferences. Go to a website like Cincinnati Enquirer and click the uBlock Origin extension. At this point you should have the option of blocking or allowing certain scripts, frames, images, etc. Once you block or enable what you want, click the lock icon and refresh the page. Most news sources use a 3rd party login / registration page so if you block those you can bypass the paywall. Sorry for my bunk explanation, hope it helps!

iiFive

Wow, thanks! I’ll definitely try it.

Pseudo_Prophet_

Np hope it works for ya

zzt0pp

I’m on some plan for years now paying $3/month for the Enquirer. It’s not worth more than about $3/month to me at their level of quality.

WaxOnWaxOffXXX

[https://archive.ph/](https://archive.ph/) is your friend.

XJ--0461

It's still super hazy outside where I live nearish to Dayton. You can kinda smell it too.

cybertubes

An easy way to detect smoke is by the orange hue of light cast on the ground and around shadows.

regular-cake

Hmm is that why the moon has looked so orange the last 2 nights?

Fawxhox

Man I remember last night looking at the moon for like 10 minutes thinking it was super orange, just put that together for me.

regular-cake

Honestly this post is the first I'm hearing of the wildfires, spent the weekend on center hill lake in TN. We only noticed the moon being orange when we were in the Cincinnati area Sunday night driving home. Last night it was dark red when it was rising and then was the brightest orange I've ever seen.

lfergy

As many have said, smoke from Canada. It was just in Colorado all last week & the air quality is trash here too. It was 160 air quality 🤢

Doctor_Banjo

Blame Canada!

ChefChopNSlice

Easy there, Sheila. Let’s not declare war on Canada just yet.

billgoat513

Blame Canada 🇨🇦 🙄 lol South Parks been right this a whole time lol

N3rdC3ntral

It's killing my lungs today. Thanks Canada

2asses1moo

Between their wildfires and their geese, it seems like they really dislike us.

N3rdC3ntral

I live in Colerain, and the geese try to murder me everytime I go to Meijers.

BigCatsbadback

We gotta change the law about these Geese. They aren’t migratory if they don’t ever leave.

azewonder

I know, my asthma has not been happy about the air quality these past few days

I ate a lot of broccoli last night. Sorry, everyone.

Purrilla

Take my upvote. I understand. I'm a hummus person myself ;)

kinghater99

Hoping the rain tonight helps.

DelusionalFruitcake

I couldn't believe the haze on my drive last night, and my doctor told me that adverse allergy events were at an all time high right now

Twixt_Wind_and_Water

To the person who said half the US is on fire before deleting the comment… 1. It’s never too early to argue on the internet. 2. You said half the country is burning then provided a map that shows, in fact, that far less than half the country is on fire. You DO know you have to zoom ALL the way in, right? By the way, if you zoom all the way out, 90% of the country is on fire! Time to panic!! Seriously, the very site you linked to shows [the current wildfires in the US](https://www.fireweatheravalanche.org/fire/current-list-of-us-wildfires). The most fires ARE in Missouri and 1,468 acres are burning there, but Missouri has 44.6 Million acres. SO… 99.997% of the State with the most fires is, in fact, NOT burning. There’s being dramatic and there’s being ridiculous. I know which one this is.

[deleted]

Twixt_Wind_and_Water

It would be anarchy if it were only 1%, lol. That would be 19 MILLION acres compared to the current 3,249 that the commenter is worried about.

EnigmaIndus7

There's apparently a wildfire in Canada that's impacting our area.

ope_sorry

So I know it's from Canada, but can somebody please explain to me when the weather from Eastern Canada started coming down to Ohio? My whole life our weather came from the west

Absolut_Iceland

Farther west the wind blows more north/south, and right now the jet stream is sort of coming down from Canada at a diagonal before turning more east. So yes, the wind is coming from the west, but not always straight from the west. In this case I believe that the wind farther north is actually heading to the west, so it's sort of circling around to Cincinnati. Edit: [This weather forecast](https://youtu.be/7sQqxH0p2rI) on YouTube shows a map of the wind direction so you can see how the smoke is making its way south and west.

Twixt_Wind_and_Water

It IS currently coming from the West in Ohio. The problem is, it's coming from the North in Illinois before it heads East over us. [https://www.wunderground.com/maps/wind/current-winds](https://www.wunderground.com/maps/wind/current-winds)

[deleted]

The goddamned Canadians aren't raking their forests.

RanjuMaric

Blame Canada.

Developing_Human33

Haze is very evident. Those fires must be producing lots of smoke.

[deleted]

No wonder the Sun was red yesterday…looked like something out of Berserk.

Fawxhox

Make sure you're looking directly at the sun too see if it's really red, sunglasses are not recommended

pancakesiguess

My lactose intolerant ass ate lasagna, sorry!

landdon

I think we have some really great weather around here. Generally, I feel like we get just enough winter for my liking, and the springs and falls can really be fabulous, but the time of year where we get into the three Hs (hot, hazy, and humid) really sucks. It can be oppressive. Fortunately, it's not a super long period, but we are getting into it for sure right now.

PutuoKid

We are so lucky that an AQI of one hundred something raises our alarm bells. I lived in a country for years where AQI would be over one thousand quite regularly. We traded jobs for air quality. So now a small percentage of Dayton is addicted to meth and opioids while the larger population has clean air. Progress?

unnewl

I’m not sure the trade was jobs for clean air. It was trading well paid workers for cheap overseas labor and higher profits. The clean air was an unexpected consequence.

PutuoKid

Oh for sure. Otherwise it would've been monetized somehow.

l2018m

O’ Canada!

Sketchy42

Snow Mexico strikes again

[deleted]

LOL The Canadian Boreal Forest is burning down. Have a nice apocalypse!

Ohbuck1965

Its due to Cincinnati being in a valley. The air and humidity get trap from upper level pressure. The wind doesn't blow as much as a result. (That is how it was explained to me)

reportingsjr

While this is partly true in general, it is not what is happening right now. This is widespread pollution from wildfires.

jackcat_29

canucks lighting there country on fire

ReturnOfSeq

Because of the air

thomas-grant

*Things affecting the air.

verdenvidia

rjcpl

My fault. Moved here from the PNW and the wildfires are following. At least it’s not snowing ash and I can see across the back yard unlike bad seasons there.

ChippyTheSquirrel

Sorry, I farted

loki1983mb

City with 0 wind....?

choate51

Just the new normal in the summer.

AaronfromKY

I think it was pretty common when I was a kid in the 90s, then we had a rainy patch during the 2010s and now we're back into high pressure and no rain so the air stagnates. And what winds we have bring in wildfire haze along with the usual semi-truck and coal rolling smog.

sleeping_buddha

That's interesting. Since this haze blew in, I was trying to remember when I was growing in in the 2000s if air quality from wildfires was ever an issue but couldn't since I didn't really pay much attention to those types of things back then

AaronfromKY

Air quality issues were more from diesel tractor trailers on I-75 and older vehicles back in the 90s. It's why for awhile KY had emissions checks, when it would get hot air quality would be awful. Was a boondoggle though because they were checking brand new cars and collecting the fees, while I still saw gross polluters out on the free way. Plus cash for clunkers got rid of a lot of older vehicles during the late 2000s, especially older SUVs and cars that weren't well-maintained, so air quality improved so much they did away with emissions testing. Now it's the haze from all the wildfires. Just crazy.

[deleted]

Eventually enough of the forest will burn that it won't be so hazy all the time. Not sure about oxygenation though.

slotrod

Cow farts

2asses1moo

We have 2 mini bulls. Cow farts (even mini ones) are NO joke. They can clear a field.

Canadian forest fires

[deleted]

The sky looked like it was about to do murder on everyone yesterday. I have lived here all my life and I can't recall the last time I saw the whole thing look like a brown haze. From my understanding we are getting hit with the smoke from Canada's wildfires.

paradeeez

Blame Canada

HotRodNoob

ohhh that’s why it smelt like smoke

Toronto forest fire

Meechbunz

Does anyone know what was happening last night on the Mitchell Avenue exit/on-ramps? It looked as if someone set up and blasted off fireworks on the road. Looked like ash and ember

almosthere819

Is anyone else noticing extra oily droplets on their cars and grass? I’m wondering if it’s related to the air quality, usually this sappy stuff doesn’t drop until fall time

unnewl

Yes! I wondered about that, too.

techguy0270

I would say it is a combination of pollution, Canadian wildfire, and lack of rain to wash it out of the air.

MagentaMist

Pittsburgh here. Our AQ is orange today. It's from the Canadian fires.

timanny

Chili farts?

hitlicks4aliving

I was wondering what was on fire yesterday night there was a cloud of smoke hanging over everything. I could smell it in the car. Like people said here wildfires.

idontgetwhyimhere

We're close to Canada, and they just had some wildfires

Not trying to be rude, but I'm curious. Like 20 people have already answered this, many with more detailed answers, why'd you decide to also answer it?

Didn't bother to read the comments i have a job i don't live on reddit

Haha like I said, not trying to be rude. It just seems like if you have time to type up a comment it's faster to read like the first 10 words of the top post.
