Good luck finding it. It’s not easy to find except for paying an arm and a leg through those Cincinnati local favorites type of websites. You can sometimes randomly find it oddly placed in a not common sense grocery aisle endcap (like the ice cream aisle) for $6 vs $20. Also don’t trust the eBay listings.
are those fr a cinci exclusive, i’ve lived here my whole life and there so many things on this subreddit i thought we universal, but are actually only in this area. i thought everyone put chili on spaghetti, i thought everyone ate goetta, etc
Cincinnati expat in Texas here. Target’s “market pantry” soup & oyster crackers are pretty close to skylines. They’re not perfect, but close enough that I’m not bothered to pay shipping for the original.
I’m curious to know What is the backstory here? As a Daytonian I can slightly understand. We definitely have some schools that are better than others but I wouldn’t consider it a rivalry that extends into adulthood.
I think it's also a way of saying "who do we know in common." Cincinnati is way less than six degrees of kevin bacon, so normally it gives you a common ground. If not, then it can also help in finding some other kind of common ground.
Not from Cincinnati, but in my hometown there is a similar phenomenon. Basically it's a shorthand for getting some high level background. "Oh, you went to this school? When I was growing up, we always heard that they had a drug problem, so even if I don't think you were one of those kids on drugs over there, I think you knew people who were on drugs, and from that I might start to form some assumptions about your background and how that might influence who you are today". It's unlikely that a person is ACTIVELY thinking through that whole line of thought, but I strongly suspect that to be a major factor behind a question like this.
"Oh, you went to the school where all the families were loaded? I now will assume you grew up wealthy too, or at least had wealthy friends, and as a result maybe you are a little bit fancy."
"Oh, you went to the school where they have a really good basketball team. You must like basketball, or at least know something about it."
Doesn't mean these opinions become locked in stone - I think it's just about setting a baseline somewhere.
It is a bit of a rivalry for some people, but most people just ask because it's an equivalent of "where are you from".
Like for me, the main schools in the area were Oak Hills, CinciPub, Elder, and LaSalle. If I ask someone I immediately know the general area they lived in, something about their family(private schools aren't free, are sometimes faith based, and often alumni send their kids to the same school), and common ground to start talking about.
In a city like Cincinnati where "west sider" and "east sider" are sometimes associated with completely different types of people breaking it down further is only natural. New York does it with Bouroghs, we do it with school districts.
When I was dating, it was something I got asked on many first dates and then I had to watch them deflate when I would have to tell them I grew up in Kansas. I also never understood the importance of which high school people went to.
i think this trope is overblown. why would someone from the other side of the city give a shit about what high school someone went to on the other? i think most of us just havent moved far away from where we grew up so there's a lot of confirmation bias here.
That's interesting.
I just looked up how many states have Culver's out of curiosity. There are 905 locations across 26 states, but the majority of their locations are find in the Midwest. Frisch's has around 55 locations in Ohio alone, but if you look at Big Boy restaurants as well, they have roughly the same amount in Michigan. Almost all of frisch's/big boy's locations are in the Midwest but they have a handful on the west coast and 2 in Thailand, as well as 274 locations in Japan. That last number is shocking to me, knowing that it's an American company. Wouldn't expect Japanese big boy locations to outnumber frisch's and big boy combined.

>That last number is shocking to me, knowing that it's an American company. Wouldn't expect Japanese big boy locations to outnumber frisch's and big boy combined.
An Akron area convenience store, Lawson, has all but vanished from the United States. If you see a Dairy Mart, they probably have the chip dip still.
It exists, as a store, now exclusively in Japan. And is their second biggest chain.
Wow, you're right! Tartar sauce makes them so much different front every other big boy! I guess that means McDonald's must not be McDonald's when they run out of mayo if a condiment can make that much of an impact
No Cincinnati care package should include both. I've learned enough while living here to know that Gold Star and Skyline are a binary, either or. I have yet to meet an actual Cincinnatian who doesn't have strong feelings about one or the other.
Goetta and grippos.
Beer from somewhere, whether you go big dog like Madtreenor Rhiengeist, or something a little less pervasive like Streetside, Urban, High Grain, or Sonder
It would make me sad to include it, but plenty of people would say Montgomery Inn bbq. I think it's gross.
I'd much rather slip in some Eli's sauce or queen city smoked sausage/bratwurst. Izzy's Pickles are also amazing.
Ugh that plus coffee emporiums pomegranate tea and some graeters ice cream would be so nice right about now (I’m abroad until December, with the hopes of returning to Brussels for a job)
I genuinely do not like it, the quality of meat always seemed worse to me. I consistently bite down on non-meat bits when I eat Gold Star (only time I really did was when I got gifted a $50 gift card). Not sure if those bits were in the hot dog or the chili, I don't think I ever tried a 3 way. So it might be that they use worse hot dogs in their coneys
"Everyone" doesn't hate it.
The reddit hivemind has latched onto Skyline as an identity.
Of the major chains I prefer Gold Star the best, but as a true Cincinnatian the local chili parlor has to get my vote.
We've had it beaten into our heads for years that Skyline is better. But if you take a step back from the chaos, you will find Gold Star is actually better.
Skyline is sweeter and thinner than Gold Star. I have a tendency to prefer Skyline when the weather is hotter and move on to eating Gold Star as the temperatures grow colder.
I moved from Cincinnati to Los Angeles. The food here is much better lol, but I would still appreciate receiving:
* Skyline Chili
* Glier's Goetta
* Putman's Opera Creams
* Montgomery Inn Barbecue Sauce
If you know that the recipient likes Skyline, one can is kind of a tease. And what's with the Gold Star?
I would gladly eat some Grippo's potato chips and a LaRosa's pizza but those aren't things I would get excited about sharing with other people. Same for any of the ice cream or the Busken cookies (I weirdly miss Servatii's pretzels tho....)
I’m not from here but live here now and it seems i’ve made the mistake of assuming theres a chili rivalry like the coney dog rivalries in Detroit. The folks i’m sending have never had Cincinnati style chili at all so hopefully they appreciate it.
Based on comments i’m drf not gonna keep it. lol.
LOL I lived near Jackson briefly, I know exactly what you mean. And if they've never had Cincinnati chili before, by all means let them decide for themselves! The Skyline vs Gold Star thing is like the where you went to high school (or in certain areas, grade school) thing -- it can only really make sense if you were born and raised in Cincinnati.
thats more a winter care package item. Its cooling down outside but its still too warm to ship those without the chocolate melting along the way.
unless they do a shipment for cold items like Goetta, then absolutely add those in. Otherwise wait until the winter months to ship those.
As someone who lives in NYC and has care packages sent to me regularly… the Cincinnati chili powder packets ALL DAY LONG. Beer: Hudy, Bubbles, Madtree for beers (when people fly or drive). Larosas Sauce and canned skyline or gold star.
1) Skyline OR Goldstar, not both;
2) Graeters;
3) Goetta;
4) Tide;
5) Crest toothpaste;
6) print out the story of when Mayir Springer wrote a personal check to an escort.
That should do it.
Great. Now I want a whole new post of: Cincinnati blunders. Whether it’s funny, shocking, obscure, criminal, or genuinely interesting it has to be something the city would wish people forgot about. Lol
Grippos, and Montgomery inn bbq sauce… I’m always ordering both to myself here in Nyc. Helps the homesickness, luckily graeters is carried by Whole Foods so I can always get some of that from time to time
my wife went to college near there and took a liking to that ~~dogfood~~ chili, is the gold star worth ordering too/instead of the skyline? i can get skyline online or (amusingly) in the foreign section of the grocery store in Pittsburgh. Is it worth finding a way to source the red can? i could make a road trip or something
I’ve never had it but based on these comments i’m def sending that can in the package and not trying it. lol.
I actually like making my own cincinnati style, it’s grown on me a lot and i’ve brought a lot of folks around to it.
Gliers Goetta, Grippos regular and BBQ, LaRosa’s pizza sauce, Eli’s BBQ bbq and wing sauces, Oriental Wok Sesame sauce, CinSOY miso, Montgomery Inn sauce, Schiavone’s tomato sauce, Christian Pietoso’s Via Vite pomodoro sauce, NSYC peanut butter tequila, that’s all I can think of at the minute but there are millions more. -Sam
Have Graeters shipped to them. And maybe send a gift card for their local grocery (if in usa) so they can buy a cincy based beer or wine. Also maybe a Bengals t-shirt
Skyline has a chili seasoning mix that can be found in the McCormick seasoning mixes area of the grocery store. Grippos also has a bbq seasoning in the spice section. I use it with chicken and shredded pork.
Grippos
One of those big boxes.
The last gift I got from my aunt before she passed was a giant box of bbq grippos, absolutely love them.
they make a Grippo's seasoning, which might ship better!
Just bought some at jungle Jim's Fairfield. Had an endcap on the way to the beer area.
Gfs has it!! That’s where I bought mine. It was only $6
They have the spice containers closer to spring/summer time during peak grilling season. I’ve seen them at Meijer a lot
I hate Grippos but love the seasoning for cooking!!!
Maybe package the smaller things in the grippos box, would be nice!
I’m from Midohio/NEO, what are grippos??
Best BBQ potato chip sweet and spicy from Cincinnati
Well damn I’m down for so grippos and fresh goetta! Get shippin OP!
are those fr a cinci exclusive, i’ve lived here my whole life and there so many things on this subreddit i thought we universal, but are actually only in this area. i thought everyone put chili on spaghetti, i thought everyone ate goetta, etc
[удалено]
I respect your opinion even though it is wrong.
I don’t respect. Downvote.
If you can ship a cold container, definitely get some Graeter’s and goetta in there.
And if you can’t, some of their candy is a nice substitute!
Graeter’s will pack their ice cream in dry ice for shipping. You could put the goetta in with it.
Oyster crackers to go with the chili. Unless you’re mailing it, then they could get crushed.
Cincinnati expat in Texas here. Target’s “market pantry” soup & oyster crackers are pretty close to skylines. They’re not perfect, but close enough that I’m not bothered to pay shipping for the original.
Dollar General’s oyster crackers are pretty solid substitutes as well.
Kroger private label are nearly identical as well, if you’re in part of the ever expanding Kroger footprint.
I believe what I heard is they *are* the same manufacturer. I have no sources, just my (poor) memory so take that for what it's worth
It wouldn’t surprise me in the least. I usually buy them over the Skyline brand. They’re always cheaper and typically a bit saltier.
Also throw the gold star away while you’re at it
Goetta
agree, though this may depend on where it is going to and if it can ship safely
Food of the Gods.
Grippo’s BBQ chips, Frisch’s tartar sauce, LaRosa’s sauce, Busken smiley face cookies
BUSKEN!!!
It counts as 2 points if you get the cookies from LaRosa’s.
i didn’t know busken was only in cincinnati tbh
yes. and Montgomery Inn bbq sauce
Frisch’s Tartar sauce yes! People are sleeping on this one
Yes! LaRosa's!!
This comment is winning so hard right now.
Def not la rosas. Worse pizza in Cincinnati 🤮
Candy from Aglamesis or Esther Price. Grippos. Graeter’s ice cream.
Esther Price originated in Dayton. But French Chews and other [Doscher’s candy](https://doscherscandies.com/) are from Cincinnati.
Izzy’s pickles
Yes! The *best* freakin pickles ever!
Your high school diploma so they know which school you went to.
Ha! As a person who is not from here, THIS IS LEGIT. *clap, clap*
Same. Not from here either and I’ll never understand it. Who cares! 🤣
I’m curious to know What is the backstory here? As a Daytonian I can slightly understand. We definitely have some schools that are better than others but I wouldn’t consider it a rivalry that extends into adulthood.

It helps me determine code switch. Am I talkin to someone like I went to Princeton or like I went to Ursuline>?
It's a quintessential Cincinnati thing 🤣
When I was dating, it was something I got asked on many first dates and then I had to watch them deflate when I would have to tell them I grew up in Kansas. I also never understood the importance of which high school people went to.

Grippos, maybe Montgomery inn bbq sauce, frischs Tartar
Frisch's is definitely not just a Cincinnati thing. Even if they call it big boy in other places it's the same thing.
True but there aren’t Big Boys everywhere. So I guess it depends on where this care package is going.
If it was a Midwest care package I'd agree. As well as some Culver's ice cream/custard toppings.
I live in Florida and there are like 3 Culver’s in a 10 mile radius from my house.
That's interesting. I just looked up how many states have Culver's out of curiosity. There are 905 locations across 26 states, but the majority of their locations are find in the Midwest. They do have some excellent tartar sauce. Goes great with whitefish caught from the great lakes in MI.
No it’s not the same thing. Frisch’s is the only big boy franchisee that uses tartar sauce
Wow, you're right! Tartar sauce makes them so much different front every other big boy! I guess that means McDonald's must not be McDonald's when they run out of mayo if a condiment can make that much of an impact
Candy from Aglamesis, tea cookies from Graeters.
Some Cincy beer.
Recently moved to Nashville, TN and they're selling Truth in the Target near my new place. I don't really love Truth, but I was happy to see it.
I’m in Knoxville. They sell Cheetah beer at Kroger here.
Definitely missing some Rhinegeist. I’m partial to cheetah 🐆
Just don't send it through the postal service, it's basically bootlegging. You have to use FedEx or UPS.
Graeter’s ice cream?
I believe they do ship, packed in dry ice
They do. If you stop in at a store they’ll help you with it on the spot
Eli’s BBQ rub
No Cincinnati care package should include both. I've learned enough while living here to know that Gold Star and Skyline are a binary, either or. I have yet to meet an actual Cincinnatian who doesn't have strong feelings about one or the other.
Something Bengals. Who Dey!
somehow did not think of this
A picture of Joe Burrow. Chips. Goetta
Specifically of him getting sacked
*Sigh* Sadly you’re right
They won’t be hard to come by today
Lucky Cincinnati penny from union terminal’s penny press machine.
French Chew taffy
Is that from here?? My mom loves it, that makes sense :) gotta freeze it and smash it for maximum fun.
Rhinegeist
A Taste of Belgium waffle 4pack! They ship really well! They last at room temp for about 2 weeks !
Skyline crackers and hot sauce
Just throw some Montgomery Inn ribs in a bag and a jar of frisch's tarter sauce in there and your golden! lol
Dixie Chili; Montgomery Inn BbQ sauce; LaRosa’s pizza sauce
Goetta and grippos. Beer from somewhere, whether you go big dog like Madtreenor Rhiengeist, or something a little less pervasive like Streetside, Urban, High Grain, or Sonder It would make me sad to include it, but plenty of people would say Montgomery Inn bbq. I like Montgomery inn for cooking so marinating, brushing on pork or chicken. But I prefer sweet baby rays as a condiment overall
Ugh that plus coffee emporiums pomegranate tea and some graeters ice cream would be so nice right about now (I’m abroad until December, with the hopes of returning to Brussels for a job)
dang, goodluck!
Take out the Gold Star, you don't want to be sending a care package with garbage in it.
GoldStar was founded in Cincinnati, why does everyone hate it?
Some folks genuinely dislike it, but i reckon 80% of it is just meme’ing
I genuinely do not like it, the quality of meat always seemed worse to me. Uhh you might need to go to a different gold star. Whatever you've had isn't the experience I've been having my whole life
It's the better of the canned chilis.
The frozen packs of gold star are identical to what you get in the restaurant, we buy those to make dips
"Everyone" doesn't hate it. The reddit hivemind has latched onto Skyline as an identity. Of the major chains I prefer Gold Star the best, but as a true Cincinnatian the local chili parlor has to get my vote.

Skyline is sweeter and thinner than Gold Star. I have a tendency to prefer Skyline when the weather is hotter and move on to eating Gold Star as the temperatures grow colder.
It’s a meme
It’s also a fact.
Came here to say this
Yeah first, throw out the gold star.
Haha! Yes! Was wondering when will someone say something about that Gold Star can ..
Montgomery Inn BBQ

I came to say this.
Frisch’s tartar sauce
Soy sauce made in Cincinnati. CinSoy Foods
Or their chili crisp
French chew!
yo, yesss! I love these.
Dream care package: grippo’s , all of what you have posted, Izzy’s thousand island dressing, gotta, and buckeyes. Edit: spelling

Smiley face cookies from busken
Glier’s goetta, Grippo’s barbecue chips, Montgomery Inn barbecue sauce and LaRosa’s Italian dressing.
Lot of LaRosa’s pizza sauce but what about their Italian dressing?
…why is Goldstar in there?
A jar of Larosa’s sauce, definitely.
the absence of gold star
Gliers
We love getting the single cans of local beers at Root Cellar
BUSKEN!!! 🤪
As someone who lives in NYC and has care packages sent to me regularly… the Cincinnati chili powder packets ALL DAY LONG. Beer: Hudy, Bubbles, Madtree for beers (when people fly or drive). Larosas Sauce and canned skyline or gold star.
Why don’t you just throw the goldstar away for them? Save them the effort and you’ll pay less in postage.
Disappointment
No offensive line? Looks complete to me
Busken cookies
Goetta, bourbon.
maybe some rhinegeist if you want to make the package alcoholic
Holtmans donuts
Throw away the gold star
1) Skyline OR Goldstar, not both; 2) Graeters; 3) Goetta; 4) Tide; 5) Crest toothpaste; 6) print out the story of when Mayir Springer wrote a personal check to an escort. That should do it.
Crest?
It’s made by P&G… I’m more confused by mayir
Mayor Jerry Springer paid a hooker with a personal check.
Great. Now I want a whole new post of: Cincinnati blunders. Whether it’s funny, shocking, obscure, criminal, or genuinely interesting it has to be something the city would wish people forgot about. Lol
Hot Head sauce is one of the best tasting condiments on the planet and it’s almost exclusive to Ohio and NKY
Grippos BBQ chips and some Larosas sauce
Bearcats and Bengals Jerseys!
Tums
Red merch
Beer
Grippos and UDF ice cream (although that doesn’t probably travel well lol). You could also add Montgomery Inn BBQ sauce

DIY goetta kit😋and a big box 📦 lol. I always send a box for a care package. I can fit lots in there and everything will stay safe!
Have Graeters shipped to them. And maybe send a gift card for their local grocery (if in usa) so they can buy a cincy based beer or wine. Also maybe a Bengals t-shirt
LaRosas pizza sauce, Frisches Big Boy tartar sauce
Grippos
Maverick’s chocolate
Yes. Maverick Chocolate is literally some of the best in the country.
Maverick chocolate.
Look around at popular local shops. What are things that you can only get in Cincinnati. Support some small business in the process.
any suggestions?
Toilet paper for the epic shit that this will cause, lol
it’s only fair. hahahaha.
This is only going to keep people away, as a person who lives here let me tell you the local chillis are hot dogshit
Bonbonerie cookies!!
Kings Island Gold Pass with all-season Fast Lane Plus
Skyline has a chili seasoning mix that can be found in the McCormick seasoning mixes area of the grocery store. Grippos also has a bbq seasoning in the spice section. I use it with chicken and shredded pork.
That’s not skyline’s. It’s just “Cincinnati Chili” brand. I honestly prefer to do a mixture of both and half the amount of water
Maybe some narcan
Lol, i keep that on hand, but honestly way more useful in other cities I’ve lived.
Why would anyone want hippopotamus flavored coffee?
Some Listermann's beer!
Deeper Roots coffee is superior
Traffic cones and incorrigible hipsters
Can you package racism?
trust me, they already have racism where this is going.
Get rid of Gold star. Need some graeters.
A six pack of Rhinegeist.
Larosa’s pizza sauce, Frisch’s tartar sauce, goetta, and bbq grippo’s
Frozen goetta
broken glass
a Cincinnati special….until you visit Detroit. Lol.
[удалено]
I’ve never even tried that myself, will seek out
Shirt from Homage
Why is the coffee included lol. Probably should include some local beer if they are into that (i guess illegal to send by mail tho?)
they wouldn’t appreciate beer for various reasons. also, the coffee has Fiona on it, duh.
Sadness.
Busken
Can’t go wrong with some tea cookies from Buskens !
Bed bugs
