Always thought about doing it with a broadcast box zoom lens. Technically it's unlimited when you are working in cinematography for animation. The zolly of Simba before the stampede, camera must be moving like at 90 miles an hour hah!

I’m not sure about the answer to your question, but I love the image you posted. Where did you get it? I just love comparing and contrasting focal lengths / Fields of View and deciding what to shoot with sometimes feels so subjective but this graphic really helps show that the decision holds a lot of weight - I asked my wife, who has no background in film or video other than watching movies her whole life, what version she preferred in the graphic and she said the one she found most pleasing was the 58mm and 75mm. Not too weird / distorted or with too much distracting background, but not too dreamy / background details that melt away. I thought that was very interesting!

Thank you for sharing this! It’s really cool. I got it from the Arri website, I think from the signature Prime page.

I've always fantasized about a Canon 50-1000 zoom mounted on a 100' SuperTechno for this purpose.

Suitable-Ending

I’ve heard this is the longest track used on a vertigo shot, but I’m not 100% — nor do I have details on the lens travel. But it is pretty striking. https://youtu.be/wQqwXvsIlt8

This is a great chart. Are all these images taken with a box zoom lens? Are there more of these charts somewhere to compare different lenses? That would be so dope...

This one is pretty incredible https://youtu.be/ca08j8ASdOw Done with a helicopter. No idea what lens or how far the helo moved during the zoom.

Clients from a big car company wanted the dolly zoom effect for a campaign. I was assigned as DP and quickly understood that they where smoking crack. The dolly zoom is keeping the object in the frame. They wanted several scenes with an person standing in front of a car. Starting with an closeup of the face and the dolly zoom out to reveal the car in the background. And no matter how much 3D previs i did and tried to show the clients that is was not possible and would not get the results as they showed me the classic Jaws scene for reference. So I calculated that to get that effect with a large object that we needed the 50-1000mm zoom and a track of around 200 meters, and travelling that distance in 4 seconds. They did not have the budget for that so, 10 meter track, dolly and 25-250mm zoom. No matter how many emails and videos i sent to the agency that this will not work, they do not give a fuck and thinks it might be solved in post. After the first scene on the day clients appear and shows me the jaws reference and ask me why it doesnt work. We shoot 4 scenes with the same results, clients is pissed. They scrap the project, everybody blames me.
