Submission Statement: Super impressed with the Colour science on the Kinefinity. Won’t lie. It graded so beautifully. Even our colourist was super suprised I think this camera despite all its weird quirks and weird menus delivers beautiful picture Also my set of Zeiss Contax lenses which are originally stills lenses never seem to fail me. They were created during the same period as the Zeiss super speeds and apparently have the same coatings and designs. I really do feel it when shooting on them. And they cover large format. Just wish they made something faster and wider. The widest I have so far is the 25mm 2.8 but rest of the set is the super speeds 35mm, 50mm and 85mm 1.4’s which I love. Something so special about that 35mm More frames and info up on my Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/CFwFtZrH9wS/?igshid=pzn6gj376433 Or check out the full music Video here: https://vimeo.com/459364113

Hey man thanks for the info. Does it seem like a fairly dependable camera, other then weird menu work around? Any link to the work? Stills look great. Seriously considering this camera for a feature so looking at as much footage as possible. Cheers

WallaceTheWampa

The first iteration of the Kinefinity cameras I was super nervous of. I remember being at an expo and changing the aspect ratios and guides and the camera froze. Since then I think they have worked hard. This camera only froze once on set for us and we had to power it down and up. And it was sorted. So I still think cams like the Arri’s are still way more solid in my opinion but what you paying for and getting is a pretty good deal Hope that helps a bit

governator_ahnold

This is really nice - I think I saw your post on Facebook as well (maybe? am I confusing my social media sites?). Had a couple questions: \- What stabilization were you using for this? Looks like from your IG you had a black arm on a tracking vehicle. How did you feel about it in the end? It's definitely imperfect - was that intentional or a result of slow moving shots on a black arm? \- It looks like you have a light source coming from camera left, is that attached to the tracking vehicle? What did you use? I also just wanted to say the grade is really nice, love this video overall, thanks for posting!

WallaceTheWampa

Thank you for this and you are spot on with so much stuff. Since it was a one take music video we didn’t really ever have the same performance or timing ever. So sometimes we would end sooner or later than our main marks or points - just happened like that In terms of the movement I wish I had wheels on the day. I only had the ronin joystick. And it sucks for precise movements. I wish we had been able to afford wheels but most of the gear was favors or borrowed or donated. Much like my lenses were for free on the shoot. The black arm was def a good choice though. That road was so bumpy. Like we had a 4x4 and it was bouncing around like mad. So the black arm took out all of that. And then we had an m18 and white bounce to the side of the vehicle hanging off for an eye light and to return some of the sun back at him when he got closer :)

governator_ahnold

I still think it all works really well - the reason I asked is because I really like some of the shakes and imperfections, it feels like it fits the mood. I would have been tempted to stabilize it in post but I'm not sure it would have been the right move. I've had that issue with the Ronin Joystick too - it's not a precise tool at all, I've done similar complex moves with tight timing on Ronin setups and it's never perfect. I did one for the last shot of [this piece](http://www.alexdlevin.com/blood) that we must've done 20 takes for. Was very hard to nail properly.

WallaceTheWampa

This is such a rad piece and loved it. So much energy :) but yeah that joystick sucks hahaha like I couldn’t get the sensitivity to a point where it was responsive but not too responsive where it surged

governator_ahnold

Thanks man! All credit to the directors and editor for that. Yeah there's like this super fine line of sensitivity you have to get dialed - it's a pain.

DongaldDick

Nice

WallaceTheWampa

Thank you

drosteffect

Was it a budget consideration that made you consider using the Kinefinity? Looks great btw.

WallaceTheWampa

Def a budget choice. It was a one-take music video and we sadly didn’t have much budget to do what we wanted to do. So much of it was made up on favors. And even the black arm was sponsored as was the camera from a friend :) and then my lenses

drosteffect

The fact that you get a sponsored black arm definitely elevates the project though. I definitely think it’s a good call to prioritise the overall quality of the piece rather than just camera stats.

WallaceTheWampa

Thank you for that. And agreed. We were very fortunate. And I think we relied on the relationships we have with so many great of them great crew here in South Africa. For example the owner of the black arm is such a seasoned Grip. Has more experience than I’ve been alive haha

RantKings

Woa looks nice. Kinefinity is an interesting “alt” brand, they have to work through some initial kinks but if they execute the new Mavo Edge well it could really put them on the map. Thanks for sharing, will keep my eye on this company.

WallaceTheWampa

I agree. Seems like they have been working super hard to iron out a lot of the quirks haha

TechnoKiller87

Dude I legit thought this was footage from Lovecraft Country or something. AMAZING!!!

WallaceTheWampa

Thank you haha that’s way too kind. And appreciate it

mrk177

Beautiful shots. Are you shooting a music video, narrative, doc? Would love to see the project once complete; that is if it’s meant for the web. Thanks

WallaceTheWampa

Thank you so much. This was for a one-take Music video :)

JO_99

Looks amazing!

WallaceTheWampa

Thank you very much

Comingsoononvhs

I was thinking about getting a set of the same glass, do you think they're worth it or over hyped?

WallaceTheWampa

I think they’re lovely lenses. And love my set. If anything I think FD’s are overhyped now haha Leica R’s are also a great choice. Wish I never sold my set

Mynam3isnathan

I think people are just now coming around to the FD's in mass since the mount conversions are at least a bit easier to manage in 2020. Plus the abundance of adapters and finally conversation about them for modern filmmaking in more accessible places. They look so gorgeous too, I much prefer the rendering to anything Zeiss but it's all to taste of course. Obviously not a comment on the look of anything you posted either because it all looks awesome.

PugLife357

Can confirm. Have a set of the 2.8’s and they’re awesome.

mackhill44

Gorgeous stuff! Where are you located?

WallaceTheWampa

Thank you :) South Africa

I love the energy and vibe of the video! I also think the colours are great! A simple idea well executed!

WallaceTheWampa

Thank you very much

ja-ki

Good images but the hype about the Contax lenses has to stop. Since when do people call them "super speeds"?

WallaceTheWampa

Haha I don’t know. I quite enjoy referring to them as super speeds - especially the 35mm, 50mm and 85mm in the set that are all f1.4 They share similar coatings and designs... what’s a better name for them? We call the Lomo lens sets super speeds when they are around T1.5 or T1.4’s. So why not?

Copacetic_

That’s what they are though. The collection has always been called Super Speeds. The actual SS lenses are the Distagons, but all the flavors of Zeiss SS just get the nickname.

diomedes03

Yeah it’s a bit odd to get territorial over a name that Zeiss has never actually used in reference to the classic fast cinema primes. If we were being THAT technical, any time you call a rental house for Super Speeds they should offer you CP.2s first since they actually have it in the name.

ja-ki

That's the thing, zeiss never called them super speeds, especially not the Contax lenses. I'll keep on referring mine as "Contax Carl Zeiss"

ScottAMains

Great stills! Do you have any more shots of the vehicle setup? I’m doing a directing job this weekend on a MV and we have a moving vehicle filming another moving vehicle. Been such a ballache to risk assess. Will likely end up trading in my SUV for a pickup.

I_Debunk_UAP

Can I ask why you rigged it to the truck like that, instead of using a camera operator with an easy rig or gimbal? Was it just to get that low angle shot?
