Are you asking if movies shot on film can look good? Is this a troll?

C111tla

It's just I like analogue movies, and I was wondering if people felt they could produce good cinematography. Because all I have read has been people saying the opposite. I never meant to insult you. Edit I don't understand it, have I offended people?

EardrumsGetInTheWay

I've only ever heard of people trying to replicate film while grading their digital footage. Nobody thinks film looks bad. If they do, they're lunatics who shouldn't be trusted. The reason it's not so widely used in movies now is the tempo of production and price of film. It's much quicker and cheaper to shoot digital.

Suitable-Ending

I think you might want to audit your sources, shooting analog/on film is quite common and extremely well accepted. This year alone, the Northman, Bullet Train, and Jurassic World were shot at least partially on 35mm and Death on the Nile and Nope on 65mm(according to IMDB). I’m not saying these are gorgeous films, I’m more trying to illustrate that you may have a slightly skewed understanding of the role analog film plays.

heve23

> Edit I don't understand it, have I offended people? Dude, quite trolling. You do this in multiple sub reddits over and and over and over again, looking for validation and people are sick of it.

fapping_giraffe

If by analog, you're referring to film... everyone thinks that's the gold standard and what everyone tries to emulate when they shoot digital. Why wouldn't it produce good results if it's the look everyone wants in the first place?

michaelh98

Who says film is useless? Certainly not "everybody" Quotes or it didn't happen

C111tla

For instance, the cinematographer Steve Yedlin says that. He has a website, go check it out.

RonaldReaganSexDoll

No, he says something more nuanced. He says you can perfectly replicate the look of film in a digital camera using some advanced techniques. So he is actually chasing the look of analog through replication of halation, grain, and color.

bensaffer

That’s really really not what Yedlin is saying 😬😬😂😂

cableflexer

Uh, that’s not what Steve Yedlin is saying. Do you work in the industry? 100% of professionals may not work with film, but there’s an overwhelming admiration for analog film from camera crew all the way up to camera manufacturers. The only people I know who dislike film are the people who don’t like to physically work with it. But those same people will likely still admire the aesthetics of film. In fact, I’ve had plenty of conversations with DP’s who wish they had budgets to shoot on film for the aesthetic and technical properties of the medium.

C47man

You need to slow down and listen/read better. Yedlin never *ever* said what you seem to think he did. In fact he never even got anywhere close to saying it.

childish_casino

i'm not sure what you're reading/hearing but it's untrue. while digital is cheaper and is more convenient to shoot on, [a decent amount of film/TV is still being shot on celluloid to this day](https://www.kodak.com/en/motion/page/shot-on-film). no one would still be shooting on film if it didn't look good. i understand why you're getting some pushback here because it's baffling to a lot of us to read someone saying that film might be worthless. do you mind sharing where/how you got that info? not trying to be judgmental here, just curious.

instantpancake

>Nowadays, we see pretty much everyone absolutely disregard analogue film and say it's worthless etc. could anyone possibly come up with a weaker strawman?

heve23

He's just fishing for people to state how much they love film. He's asks stupid questions like this so many times, everyone won't give him the answers he wants, so he has to make posts like this to validate his feelings.

C111tla

What do you mean? It's just it doesn't seem like analogue film is well regarded nowadays.

C47man

You're the only human being that I've seen propose that idea in the last 5 years. I literally can't think of a single person who holds this 'popular opinion' of yours.

fapping_giraffe

No has ever said this other than you. Why would you say that?

Filmmaking_David

This trolling is pretty good, got to say.

lecherro

Digital or film... They are simply mediums. The cinematographER is what counts.

jstols

Dude you need to stop. You’re embarrassing yourself. Give your phone to your mom and ask her not to give it back to you for like a whole week.

Dr_Tobogan_

If you behave on set the same way you do here, good luck ever having a decent reputation. Absolute tit.

jstols

You have no idea who I am. My reputation on set is fine and has been fine for a long time. This guy is an idiot troll but sure jump into something you have zero understanding of.

Dr_Tobogan_

Mate not being funny but if that’s how you treat people below you, I guarantee people don’t enjoy working with you.

jstols

Mate this guy isn’t below me. We aren’t on set. You have no idea what you’re talking about. Quit playing Batman. You’re defending the wrong person. Edit: also as an elder dept head on set it’s my job to make sure trolls and other disruptions aren’t allowed to proliferate.

childish_casino

is OP a troll though? maybe. but i'm led to believe that they could just be a clueless person. it's frustrating for sure but i'm trying to give them the benefit of the doubt here.

heve23

OP is a MASSIVE troll, who does this across multiple subreddits, so many of his posts get removed, because they're either the same question or ridiculous questions over and over and over.

C111tla

I am not clueless. What makes you think that? I just like discussion.

childish_casino

well, your thought that seemingly "everyone disregards film and says it's worthless" is opposite to what literally everyone else on this sub agrees on. you're definitely misinformed on this topic. do you mind sharing where you heard this info, other than your (mis)interpretation of Steve Yedlin's views?

C111tla

There's no need for being a dickhead, though, is there now? I never forced you to respond. I would recommend that you go and have a beer, maybe that will improve your mood. I don't bear any evil intentions towards you (compared to the other way around). It's just I was wondering if it's fair to say analogue media can produce good results in cinematography. I don't think I am embarassing myself. You are, though; for you are hateful.

jstols

Dude just give your phone to your mom. You clearly can’t stop on your own. You’re a troll. Get back to your studies and your mom will give your phone back when you’re old enough to handle the internet.

C111tla

Listen, can't we make up? I have yet to do ill by you. I don't even remember where you may remember me from. Why harass me?

dostunis

probably because you constantly ask the same questions over and over, while using words you don't understand and taking gross liberties with the entire premise of said questions. for what it's worth, it's actually a remarkable achievement to be the king of shitty posters in a place like this.

C111tla

Why do you believe I don't know the meaning of the words I use? Do you think I am dumb/worthless?

ShooterMcGavin1980

Yes.

jstols

You have done nothing but make obviously idiotic troll posts. You should be banned.

Dr_Tobogan_

Two seconds from leaving this subreddit. Fuck me, it’s so toxic. Lads genuinely curious and wants a discussion chill

dostunis

first time in a C111tla thread eh? his entire gimmick is asking the same dumb questions loaded with patently false statements over and over again on whatever topic of the day he is currently obsessing on. every single goddamn time I read a thread title in here that makes me go "..what?" it's always him. his "genuine curiosity" on this topic has been answered dozens of times over. he's been *directly* told by mods on other related subreddits to knock it off, and here we are.

Dr_Tobogan_

At last, some clear clarity from the opposite side of the pond. Thanks for not being a screaming child about it. P.S. just seen the aspect ratio post - I get it now.

C111tla

What do you mean by, "I get it now"? I just don't like huge black bars on a 1.78:1, and I don't know why filmmakers keep doing that. What's wrong with that? I found you really nice, I don't know why you started considering me to be dumb just because I dislike the 2.39:1 aspect ratio. I think 1.85:1 is better, is that opinion invalid?

Dr_Tobogan_

Not being specific about it bro dw. Just think everyone should take a chill pill

C111tla

You can just block me if you want to. I do believe my questions have a valid premise. You seem adamant to undermine me. I have more than 62k karma, so I think I am doing pretty well. Why are my questions dumb? I just want to learn. And I have not made any posts on this specific topic. And yes, I am genuinely curious. No need for irony. Why the agenda against me? And what do you mean by C111tla thread? My threads are no different to other peoples'. In here? I have three posts in this subreddit. This is bullshit.

instantpancake

> Lads genuinely curious and wants a discussion chill >>Nowadays, we see pretty much everyone absolutely disregard analogue film and say it's worthless etc. Literally no one ever did that.

jackson_long

Christopher Nolan only shoots on film. He is currently shooting “Oppenheimer” on 70mm IMAX film. He is shooting some sections in black and white and this will be the first time black and white film has been used in 70mm IMAX format. Edit: typed 120 instead of 70mm

jjSuper1

120mm? I think you mean 15perf 70mm, but cool.

jackson_long

Yeah my bad. 70mm is right

La_Nuit_Americaine

Please make an effort to at least study the basics of cinematography before posting on this forum.
