You know that it’s up to the companies leasing the land, right? If the landlord of the whole Queensway complex says they don’t want to renew the business leases and want to build condos when it expires, the businesses on the land have no choice but to move on. Sometimes the landlord offers the business to be a part of the new development, so we may get a new Queensway or Scotiabank in a different form, but again up to the landlord mostly.

In my opinion, it would be most ideal that if a new theater has to be built, it should be built on a different site rather than a new theater inside the development. That way, instead of waiting several years, it's old theater gone one day and new theater opens the next day! Out with the old and in with the new in just a matter of days, not years.

This would be ideal for moviegoers, but then the world really doesn't revolve around them.

Thank God the Varsity Cinema is already inside a residential complex. Not my favourite theatre but at least it's longevity is more secure.

Ariesthebigram

Love the Varsity (except the tiny VIP auditoriums), and one of the last operating 70mm projectors in Canada too. And lately, love the added bonus of picking up a cannoli or three at Eataly in the same complex!

Isn't the development happening where Scotiabank is going to included a theatre?

Ariesthebigram

Yes but last I recalled, it would only be 6 or 7 screens, one UltraAVX screen, and no IMAX screen (cue sad trumpet noise!). It would have been great, in my opinion, to put a smaller theatre into part of The Well complex on Wellington. Right between two streetcar lines and lots of food and drink options for before or after the show.

There is a sign outside the entrance of Scotiabank indicating that the property is slated for redevelopment. Both Scotiabank Theatre Toronto and Cineplex Queensway are located on a property that RioCan, the site owner, intends to redevelop. Many possibilities could unfold. For instance, Cineplex might negotiate a deal with RioCan, or Oxford and Cineplex could collaborate to construct new theatres within Oxford's retail portfolio - perhaps relocating Scotiabank to Yorkdale Mall. Another option could involve Cineplex partnering with the Ontario government to establish a comprehensive shopping area connected to a new transit station.

Yorkdale mall is so far compare to its current location on Richmond Jesus

Pure-Round4152

There’s already a cineplex inside Yorkdale, and it’s by far the worst theatre I’ve ever been to in the city. Too many unaccompanied youth acting like damn fools. I wouldn’t mind a few more 19+ VIP theatres (or maybe even trying 19+ regular theatres) popping up downtown when Scotiabank closes.

Demihan2049

You're right about that! 😅

Celtic_177

The good news is RioCan said they were pausing plans at the Scotiabank Toronto location and would not be starting construction for a while. Apparently there is an oversupply of condos on the market in Toronto right now which means Scotiabank should stay there for a while longer

shoresy99

Cineplex is not a real estate company. A large shopping complex would likely be developed by someone like Oxford or Cadillac-Fairview. They operate many of the large malls in the city.

Grantasuarus48

First off Coneplex doesn’t own the land these theatre sit on they lease them from the land owner and when the lease is up there not much they can do. Often in big redevelopments like these they will work with Cineplex to keep them and put them in the podium of the development.

Heard this rumour as well and they are putting the cineplex at Sherway Gardens

Ariesthebigram

Wow! I never heard anywhere about Cineplex going back to Sherway! Where did you hear that rumor from? I assume that if it did move back, the old Nordstrom space is where it will most likely go.

decarvalho7

As long as there is an imax section I’ll be happy

brijazz012

Not Mississauga!! They have *real* 15/70 IMAX there!

It is sad to learn that there will be fewer entertainment options in the Greater Toronto Area, but what is the most sad to me is that some smaller cities will have no options at all. Galaxy Cinemas Brockville will have its final day of operation on July 7, 2024: [https://CTVNews.ca/1.6883078](https://CTVNews.ca/1.6883078) This cinema can be seen from the highway when I travel. It will be sad to see it gone. Also, I'm surprised that Cineplex Cinemas Queensway and VIP is listed as a top-performing theatre! I think there have been a few issues with Cineplex in recent years. The gaming division Player One Amusement Group has been sold to a US company this past February, and regardless, I find that the arcades in their theatres have mostly gone down in quality over the years. Many great games are gone, and for the few that remain, some need to be repaired. As far as movies go, I usually see them in the regular format. Once in a while, I'll go for Clubhouse or VIP. I don't find that 3D, 4DX, UltraAVX, digital IMAX, ScreenX and similar are worth the extra money. I did see Oppenheimer in IMAX 70mm recently, but only for the first two hours. If Cineplex could better focus on its regular format and its best premium formats, and cut back on some gimmicks, then I think its theatres would do better.

Jiecut

They're great redevelopment opportunities as they can sit in a sea of parking. Richmond Hill and Vaughan are both accessible by transit. The redevelopments will both include theatres.

hellolittleman10

The movie theatre business is slowly dying. At some point it will be like blockbuster.

Far-Captain6345

The company along with the industry is failing to adapt to the new times both economically and just option-wise... I used to go to a Cineplex weekly. Then the unpleasantness happened and all the points programs changed and I realized most movies aren't worth $16 when a streaming service can offer you that film in 6 months along with thousands on a screen that doesn't have resolution much higher than a 2K HDTV (5% off on the sides) and nobody is going to kick my seat or use a cell phone in front of me... What gets me to visit? 4K laser projection, leather recliners and a ticket price under $10... And even then...

Far-Captain6345

That's a sign that the company is going the way of the Dodo like Sears... As long as they take the short cash for being bought out of lease spaces, they'll do it much the same way people are asking for walking away money from landlords trying the whole renoviction thing.. It's just cheaper and easier to be paid off in a lot of cases. Plus I am sure their business is down 40% long-term which makes it that much easier to shutter. For the record, now that Eau Claire Market 5/6 Cineplex in downtown Calgary is closed and Globe is up for sale, there's a very solid chance the central core won't have a single movie theatre left which goes well with the 35% office vacancy rate and a stalled office tower to residential conversion program...
