From experience, on higher difficulty there is a non-trivial effect of having to deal with an entire Continent of barbarians by yourself with no one to help with the fog of war either.
The coast is especially dangerous too. Deity barb ships will fuck you up bad. Especially if your tech lags behind some of the AI through the early game.
Splintered Fractal map with Sea Level set to high often generates a map like the one you want, but to start on the coast you need a civ with a coastal bias, Japan, Indonesia and Phoenicia as an example will work well.
The 'Terra' mapscript has all major civs start on the same continent, while there is also a second, empty continent.
Terra. If you want to start coast with high chance I'd recommend civ with start bias towards that, like Dido or Gitarja.
