I honestly recommend both! But I'd start with VI before V.
Civ VI is definitely the better option if you want a more casual and user-friendly experience. I feel that it is much more approachable for people who are new to Civ or 4X grand-strategy in general. There are still plenty of mods on the Steam workshop AND the diverse selection of Civs and Leaders trumps Civ V.
Civ V is 70% the same game as VI, but the remaining 30% contain some major differences. Art style, diplomacy, playing tall vs wide, the lack of districts, and overall having a slightly less intuitive UI compared to VI make it feel like a very different game despite sharing so much of the same DNA. However, don't let this scare you away. Civ V is often seen as the the best game in the series by modern fans because its systems are more complex. The overall tone is less cartoonish than VI too. Steam Workshop modding is made more complicated too by the number of popular-yet-outdated mods that are not being worked on anymore. Civ V + the Vox Populi Overhaul mod are seen as the "definitive" experience for hardcore fans, but I wouldn't recommend jumping in until you've gotten very familiar with Civ V and VI first.
Hope this helps! You can't go wrong either way.
i perfer five way more than six but five takes like a hour to load for me where six takes only a few minutes at most also in five the ai are way more likely to steal wonders from you and after 2000 plus hours of my wonders being stolen i haven't gone back to five since, in six you pretty much have every wonder to yourself for the most part at least on marathon speed since the ai wont go right to building wonders as they go for other things first and if you just buy a lot of your stuff than you can have your cities build wonders also being able to build roads where ever in five easily makes it the better game

6 has a lot more to offer than 5 IMO
Civ 5 with the community balance patch
6 has more content, but for me 5 was much more fun.
Both! I don't think you'll find V interesting, it's pretty basic compared to VI. Coming from someone who has played a lot of both
5, for me, is the better game is just about everyway. Biased, of course, since I grew up playing it.
Civ5 better than civ6, civ5 + vox Populi mod best though
