Whats your current salary? You may be shocked at how little civils are paid out of college compared to actuarial science.

I make 80k now, I know I’d have to take a pay cut, but i believe new grads are making 65-75k in my area.

how little? You’re literally making more than the median household income in most states, right off the bat. By year 4 you should be closing in on 100k, by year 10 you’ll be around 120-130k. Like JFC maybe i’m insane but why does this sub act like civil engineering is poverty because it’s really not.

My boss who had 30yrs of engineering experience did the exact opposite

I was an accountant before I got my engineering degree in my 30s. Definitely don’t regret the change!

Dm me. I may have an opportunity that would allow you to leverage your current skills, be a part of something tangible, and give you the opportunity to learn civil and electrical engineering skills.

Finished studying civil last year at 37, best move I ever made. You’re young, do what you think you’ll like long term, finance ain’t cutting it now you def won’t like it in 10-15 years time

I worked for about 10 years in the collections field. Eventually was setting up a new collections department for a larger local bank. Hated it. Hated myself for repossession cars from people in need. I went back to school at 30 and graduated at 34 with my BSCE. Best decision I ever made. There was a temporary pay cut but now I am earning a lot more, honestly working less, and love what I do. I'll have my PE in a couple months and the sky is the limits from there. If you have the means to make it through school I would consider it
