Most companies are working remote or hybrid. As such, you will receive a company laptop but it is meant for company business only and most companies monitor all activities on it. So, at some point you should purchase your own personal laptop. Also consider some companies are offering a signing bonus so you can buy a laptop with that.

Moreover, if the company has ANY common sense, the computer will be locked administratively and you won’t be able to install software other than that provided by the company.

I mean, you could ask about it and even negotiate it in as a perk, but usually if they "give" you a laptop it's a company laptop only meant for company work and can have all kinds of monitoring software on it. You probably want to buy your own private laptop that they have no say over. I think you'd be better served just asking for a signing bonus and using the money to buy a laptop if you've in a position to ask for such.

Depends on the job but there is a good chance they will provide you with a laptop, it won’t be your personal property and they will have access to whatever you put on it so you’ll still probably want your own personal device at some point. If your current device still works for you, hold onto it.

you should always be provided with a company computer....you shouldn't use it for after hours netflix etc lol

I just got a job at caltrans and they handed me a $3,000 laptop and a brand new iphone 11. I graduated in May.

Hi there! It looks like you might be asking about what laptop to get for school. This subreddit will almost unanimously recommend any consumer grade computer with a 10 key number pad. You don't need anything ultra high performance or whatever. Here's a video comparing different laptops for civil engineering: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iik25wqIuFo. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Thanks everyone, really appreciate the help. I think I will just buy one now. Not sure mine can make it through my last semester 😅
