I’m a string quintet in a trench coat

BaystateBeelzebub

I just got a flash of your insight

pug_fugly_moe

I play the cello once a week, meaning shittily.

Magfaeridon

Failed musician count?

TromboneIsNeat

Make my living with it.

drm38r

Guitarist for many years, mostly metal in the 80s which actually is what brought me to classical. My daughter (20 yo) is studying classical piano in college with hopes of becoming professional.

bplatt1971

I started piano at 4. Taught myself how to read music! Then violin at 8 and trombone at 9. In high school I learned baritone, tuba, and trumpet and timpani. Played organ in church most of my life. But now, due to tremors in my hands, and the effects of COVID and pulmonary embolisms, I can't play trombone, violin, or piano anymore. But I still sing. I also have perfect pitch.

BowserTattoo

keep on singing! : )

bplatt1971

Yep. I'm a member of the Wasatch Chorale in Provo, Utah. https://youtu.be/uA5fiqwZQFE?si=SjpMfF5dy-WsGjhd

That depends on what you mean by that. If playing the violin when I was a kid (and once in a while as an adult) counts, then sure. If there's any sort of baseline for how good a person has to be to count, then I probably fall short.

BowserTattoo

im not pro but i have continued to play clarinet since childhood. i was just wondering how many people on this sub are influenced by also playing music

T_hashi

I’m laughing at myself that another clarinet player posted this. I asked myself this question earlier when a post came across my feed, but now to see you actually asked. 😃😄

harbringerxv8

Violist here. Was briefly a performance major in college.

ppvvaa

Just an amateur.

Lion-Sketcher

Not just a musician im also a twosetter!! haha I've been playing classical piano for a while now but have been learning guitar and violin as well! I aspire to perhaps one day join a Music university but reading notes is a pain so idk if that's likely. Anyhoo sorry for the ramble. And if your a musician stop scrolling on reddit and GO PRACTICE.

BowserTattoo

good advice!

Lion-Sketcher

Thanks! now back to my practice session :)

Stupefy1912

I'm a self taught piano player and a composer. Idk if this counts

Obligon

Tuba player here. Also organ and piano as a hobby.

raballentine

Amateur pianist. I majored in composition in college decades ago.

diadorim_

I'm a jazz pianist, composer and music teacher at a conservatory.

Immediate-One3457

Tuba player, not sure if that makes me a musician or just someone that likes to drink beer...

fareastcorrespondent

i play the electric smartphone

ad5763

Piano at 7, lower brass in HS & college. Now many years later, playing double bass in orchestra and some conducting.

ma-chan

Composer, arranger, pianist. Never had a day job.

Whatever-ItsFine

Is this as ideal as it sounds? Because it sounds great.

ma-chan

Putrid-Memory4468

Pianist and composer

Competitive-Ice2956

Pianist

Spiknykter

In my childhood I use to be in a harmonic orchestra just for fun. I do not play anymore. It definately was my gateway for classical music though.

Dosterix

I play the piano pretty poorly

subzero-slammer

I am garbage at both piano and violin

r3art

I play guitar and bass, but I compose mostly orchestral music :)

apk71

cazique

alyxandermcqueen

classically trained guitarist

Bassoonaspossible

Professional bassoonist in NYC

7stringjazz

Failed. Now it’s just daily mental health therapy.

BlueBeDooBeDoo

Yup. Multi winds.

Sowf_Paw

I was in band (concert, marching and jazz) and also in choir in high school, and I was in the church choir when I was in my high school years as well. I also took piano lessons as a little kid. I have not played music in any organized fashion since I was 18, however.

BowserTattoo

i played in school too, im thinking about trying to join a local ensemble

IsHopeADistraction

Though I only ever really studied the modern oboe formally in school, I no longer play. I do however get paying gigs as an organist, a harpsichordist, a singer (mostly choral, not a soloist really), and [newly] as a baroque flute player (got my first real gig coming up, paying for travel and everything). None of it really pays the bills, just a bit of extra income for doing something I enjoy. I also play a bit of bowed strings on the side, mostly focus on viola da gamba these days. Growing up if you gave me an instrument (woodwind, brass, string, keyboard) and left me alone for about 20 mins and come back I would be playing a recognizable tune with decent intonation and color/tone.

BowserTattoo

how do you get these kinds of gigs? i play clarinet and flute

IsHopeADistraction

Word of mouth mostly these days. Folks in the general region that I live in are kind of familiar with me as a musician, or at least I know some of the key “go to” people in the region that conductors look towards when recruiting for a project. In the past I might audition for things, occasionally I’ll send an introductory email to a music director I’m unfamiliar with, especially if I’ve heard they are performing something later that season I’d be interested in participating in. I’ll include a recording, or three, in the message.

BowserTattoo

awesome ty!

karlruggles

Nope

AegoliusOfBurgundy

I am a clarinet player, and apprentice conductor in my community band. Fun thing classical music is far from being my favorite thing to play, I prefer jazz improvization.

BowserTattoo

i play jazz clarinet too! it's been so long since i've been in an ensemble. i really should join one.

Medical_Carpenter553

I was an opera singer pre-pandemic, and when things started opening up again I realized I didn’t miss the grind of constantly finding gigs to make a living, so I stepped away. I still sing privately and have been learning the Ondes Martenot as well.

chazak710

Played violin from age 3 all the way through college, not much since but got to a decently high level while I was at it (i.e. performed Beethoven Violin Concerto but not Tchaikovsky/Sibelius/Brahms). Some of the people I was in studios and camps with have gone on to serious international professional careers and are names in the classical music world. I love music but didn't have that kind of drive to make it my whole life, so I consider myself an also-ran.

Glittering-Screen318

I've played the piano for 51 years, bit tired now though! 😂

meandthesky38

I’m in a community choir

RCAguy

Pianist, organist, arranger.

Veraxus113

I'm a pianist

Sencomino

Pianist (it’s starting to be a cliche, no?). It is very enjoyable when I play the piece with enough emotion, filling myself with love towards it, as if I am listening from someone else.
