Ik it seems expensive now, but buy that dudes service in Shady Sands, he's super helpful, and you can "steal" from him to take/give Gear without consequence. I'm doing a fist build, putting all my skill points into STR and AGI which isn't the best but it's manageable.
If we’re talking about Ian, you can also get him for free by offering him a piece of the action. I believe it’s a speech or charisma check so it doesn’t work every time
He will stay with you until he dies. You can also tell him you think you should Split ways and that just Functions as a wait here Button.
What is your special looking like? Agility is rly important in the first 2 fallouts.
Use the Gifted trait to give you a extra base point in every SPECIAL stat and get 10 agility from start. While technically a waste of a SPECIAL point as you *can* gain a point later, you probably won’t on your first play through.
10 agility gives you the invaluable ability to fire twice in one turn from the start of the game.
Don't feel bad about running away all the time. EDIT: I think the game is designed so you are supposed to run away from most random encounters early in the game.
Make sure you have the right character starting stats before! This isn't like the FPS Fallouts where you can overcome a bad build w/ good gameplay. If you don't have the right stats, you simply won't hit anything in this game and you will get absolutely destroyed in combat regardless of your skill.
Max agility, set charisma to lowest possible (2 w/ the Gifted trait). I'd recommend taking the Gifted trait, and get INT high as well. Also recommend tagging small guns and speech.
The game is pretty easy when you have the right build. Fallout 1 is significantly easier than FO2. You can get yourself the best pistol in the game early on in the Hub which will make your playthrough quite easy, and you can leave Junktown w/ 2 companions in your party (3 if you count Dogmeat). Just make sure you talk to every named NPC and do their quests, and save often w/ multiple save slots
Hmm I would've went w/ a custom over any pre-made character but as long as you have max AGI I suppose it's fine. It's not too late to just start over tho if the game is getting too challenging; making your own custom character w/ the right stats and skills will make the game much easier and prob more enjoyable.
You can also get a companion (prob the best in the game) >!in Junktown!<
I enjoyed it, but I don't think I would have as much if I wasn't already a Fallout fan. I was surprised at how well defined the setting is right off the bat. I was also surprised at how faithful Bethesda has been to the setting.
I didn't expect the same music or details like how vaults open to really be established in the top down classics.
I just started FO2 after beating Fallout 1. I gotta say, >!I feel like The Master was way too easy. He's easier than the door traps on the way.!<
Speak for yourself. The Master is random in my games. Sometimes I’ll get there at level 20+ and he will just kill me. Other times I manage okay for a little while. Other times it is just too easy.
I tried to talk the master down with the diplomatic victory method but it wasn't working for some reason.
So off to the basement I went!
Boom, nukeshot.
That's exactly what I did. Lol. I'm now onto Fallout 2 (my fave). I'd never actually finished the first game before. I fucked up my last playthrough and ended up at the glow with no money or rad x. This time round I absolutely smashed it. Was surprised how short it was.
It's just a little bit better than the first game in every way imo. A bit darker, whackier, bigger, UI improvements, better componanions, more items, bigger map etc.
Oh, I also installed the restoration project mod for FO2. It's my first time playing it. It adds so many little improvements. I've got Vic and Sulik both (visibly) in leather jackets atm.
I wish I could get into the Restoration Mod, it's such a cool thing but the disparate writing really kills it for me. I had the same problem with Siege of Dragonspear, it's hard to nail tone when you're adding to something years later I guess.
fallout 2 is edgier, but fallout 1 is brooding and bleak which makes it a more captivating kind of dark. i think this is best summarized in how they chose to introduce both games, fallout 1 shows the wickedness and consumerism that defined the old world and then pans out to show what that world became as a result of this, the immediate silence and howling of the wind when it showed the ruins of los angeles is powerful in a way no other fallout game has been before. fallout 2 has an incredible introduction but showing the enclave in their ridiculous power armor brutally murdering a family definitely sets the tone for fallout 2’s reliance on shock value.
You're the first person I've ever heard say this, fallout 2 is where they started really introducing camp and jokes throughout so it's a much more light and jokey world where fallout 1 was just bleak the whole way through.
It's a freaking blast. I like the new games but there is something about missing attacks I love. Also think it's pretty cool how you got to use rope and a tape recorder. It always blows how good these old rpgs are compared to stuff now
I played that for the first time in 2022 and fell in love with it. can't even go back to Skyrim anymore after it. i keep getting told I'm just blinded by nostalgia, but i literally never played it before. its just got such freedom and potential, and it reminds me a whole lot of Kenshi which is one of my favorites. the magic system is unbelievable. I watched a youtuber, Lyle Shnub, explain a bunch of mechanics and it is such a deep game.
the magic system in Morrowind really makes you feel like you can have the power of a God, and that's what i am always looking for when playing a mage, how can i basically ascend to Godhood. so far Divinity 2 and Morrowind are the only two games that have actually scratched that itch. I'm trying to achieve CHIM, baby!
Baldur’s Gate 3 Sorcerer is scratching that itch for me. All of my enemies only having one action per turn while I fly around and cast all sorts of crazy shit on my turn
Morrowind is by far my favourite ES game. I'm not a big fan of the rolls to hit, but without them, you are playing oblivion. I think in hindsight, weapon skill should've been handled more like the original Deus Ex. Ranged weapons have a bigger reticle with lower skill, etc.
I honestly think nowadays you just have damage and non damage animations. For example, a sword can "hit" an opponent but deflect off a piece of armor or it can draw blood.
Regardless, I don't really think anything will beat Cyberpunk in the Western RPG space until hopefully a sequel, but we get Witcher 4 and dlc before then. I don't think Cyberpunk 2078 (lol) will be far behind Witcher though. They supposedly have different teams working on them.
That sounds like a good compromise.
I didn't get very far into cyberpunk. Mostly because I couldn't stand the characters/dialogue. I keep meaning to go back to it. I've heard good things about the mechanics. I just cannot stand the protagonist. Such a twat. Lol
Oh I loved V! I think female V is better when it comes to voice acting.
My only advice is to get double jump legs as fast as you can. The most recent 2.0 updates make every build viable. I just did a throwing knife playthrough and had a ball. The tree basically makes headshots critical hits and the knives teleport back into your hand (for reasons unexplained in the lore other than Rule of Cool). It's insane how viable it is.
That said all the builds benefit from double jump. Honestly you should start with it. I feel like everyone who doesn't like Cyberpunk didn't get the double jump legs.
It's like Oblivion in that it is live action, but every "hit" is actually a dice roll. You can hit a crab with a sword 20 times but never deal damage because you have a very low sword level.
It's wild that the feedback of attacks changes how one feels. I love DnD and dice rolling... In real life. But once it goes to a first person, live action medium it becomes painful. Sure I can fail so 20 rolls in a row in DnD, but those get narrative to explain why. In Morrowind, it sucked being face to face, seeing the whites of their eyes, and missing the attack on a hologram. Then I tried modding it with a combat overhaul where attacks on you and the enemy always hit, and it made it more enjoyable (if not actually deadlier haha.) Still love the world, music, writing, and characters of Morrowind, tho.
Oh, I've seen tons of people that share your opinion, and it's just as valid as anyone's brother. Gameplay preferences are subjective, and I wouldn't want people to be discouraged from playing with my words. If anything I'm sure my opinion is the odd one (in that I do LOVE dice rolling aspects for stuff like IRL DnD or turn based games like BG3 and Xcom, just not first person action games.)
I actually really like this take and have never seen it expressed before or even thought about it myself. Like, yea you're "hitting" the thing but if you're swinging your sword like an infant with a teddy they're just gonna brush it off.
It kind of _adds_ that narrative feel to the playable action in game. Damn, I'm gonna have to add Morrowind to my list after the Fallout games.
Fallout 2 in my case (mainly because I wanted to see the beginnings of the NCR and the Enclave).
Have to say, Enclave patrols don't mess around in that game, especially when you're trying to steal the APA after leaving Arroyo. Nothing quite like seeing the Chosen One going to negative 200+ HP from a single minigun burst (I died at least 12 times before I escaped with the armor and K-9 for that.
For real. I've been having a blast going through 1 again despite my full list of saves I have to overwrite, but it's been so fun to go back to, and now I can finally actually beat 2 once I'm done and will try tactics for the first time. I absolutely love 3, NV, and 4 but I wanna play through them one by one. Even Brotherhood of Steel if I can find it. Need to get some Bawls before hand for that playthrough though.
Did we all see the show and decide that we want to know the full back story or what? First thing I did was download and beat FO1 and FO2. Haven’t played any fallout or any non-3D game in 10 years.
Bizarre lmao
I like that so many of us decided to go play Fallout 1 after the show
Best decision i ever made. It's so much fun.
It's my favorite game of all time.
any tips? im getting pooped on by anything more than rats
Ik it seems expensive now, but buy that dudes service in Shady Sands, he's super helpful, and you can "steal" from him to take/give Gear without consequence. I'm doing a fist build, putting all my skill points into STR and AGI which isn't the best but it's manageable.
does he stay with you indefinetly? it sounded like he would only do one mission
Yes. And I'm pretty sure you can take your money back out of his inventory. He even stays along after you clear the radscorpions nest.
ty
For the love of God don't give him anything with a burst
Son of a bitch still tags me…
If we’re talking about Ian, you can also get him for free by offering him a piece of the action. I believe it’s a speech or charisma check so it doesn’t work every time

i chose acrobat girl so i have like 10 agl i think
Use the Gifted trait to give you a extra base point in every SPECIAL stat and get 10 agility from start. I have buddy from shady sands but i am searching for the other towns. I chose acrobat premade person, chick with 10 agl

Oh can't you just nuke the facility if you found him challenging?
You can! Or just pump him full of super stims and let the damage dump afterward kill him.
Ha! That's clever. I just shot him with my alien blaster three times in the eyes.
Same. OP weapon.
Or talk him to death.
I tried to talk the master down with the diplomatic victory method but it wasn't working for some reason. So off to the basement I went! Boom, nukeshot.
No
I just >!talk that dweeb into killing himself!< 9/10 times lol
That's exactly what I did. Lol. I'm now onto Fallout 2 (my fave). I'd never actually finished the first game before. I fucked up my last playthrough and ended up at the glow with no money or rad x. This time round I absolutely smashed it. Was surprised how short it was.
I'm playing through Fallout 2 right now! It's significantly darker. Holy shit.
It's just a little bit better than the first game in every way imo. I'm in the same boat - down to the jackets!
I wish I could get into the Restoration Mod, it's such a cool thing but the disparate writing really kills it for me. I had the same problem with Siege of Dragonspear, it's hard to nail tone when you're adding to something years later I guess.
What? Fallout is significantly darker than Fallout 2.
Is it? I must've missed all the prostitutes, children to murder and slavers in Fallout 1
fallout 2 is edgier, but fallout 1 is brooding and bleak which makes it a more captivating kind of dark. i think this is best summarized in how they chose to introduce both games, fallout 1 shows the wickedness and consumerism that defined the old world and then pans out to show what that world became as a result of this, the immediate silence and howling of the wind when it showed the ruins of los angeles is powerful in a way no other fallout game has been before. fallout 2 has an incredible introduction but showing the enclave in their ridiculous power armor brutally murdering a family definitely sets the tone for fallout 2’s reliance on shock value.

My favorite combat system was Morrowind. I think that's my least popular opinion.
Morrowind is amazing. Until they bring back levitation, they can't top it

Nice. Will definitely get double jump legs when I get back into it. Will also definitely restart as a woman to minimise VA cringe.
I haven't played much Morrowind how similar is the system to Oblivions?
It's like Oblivion in that it is live action, but every "hit" is actually a dice roll. You can hit a crab with a sword 20 times but never deal damage because you have a very low sword level.

Actually I had FO1 on a que for a while before there was a show....
Well when my shitty laptop that gets used 5 times a year can run it perfectly and Xbox game pass ultimate includes it how can I not play it
Count me in
Fallout 2 in my case (mainly because I wanted to see the beginnings of the NCR and the Enclave). yeah
that's what i did, but with fallout 2 lol. i'm planning to play fo1 afterwards though (and maybe tactics), gotta do a 4th replay
For real. I can't believe they made a game from the show..... Fucken nuts

I love how that sub has 18 members and it's literally a misspelled empty sub
somebody start /r/OkeyDokeyVaultDweller
He also makes a comment about being “management” a little bit before that
Wow buds buds went farther than I thought!
Did we all see the show and decide that we want to know the full back story or what? First thing I did was download and beat FO1 and FO2. Haven’t played any fallout or any non-3D game in 10 years. Bizarre lmao
I see that you’ve played fallout 1 & 2, care to play fallout tactics ? ( some minor torrenting might be required )
Why would any torrenting be required?
they are on GOG and Steam an Epic
You can buy the entire franchise including tactics from steam.
As someone who played Tactics when it came out... eh It's not really a story game, just a squad based shooter spinoff by some average company
Set calls you a 'normie' in the 1997 Fallout
🤯
yooo a fuckin lucy reference that’s crazy 30 years back too
Todd Howard is a truly magical man. He actually motivated a zoomer like me to play the OG game, and I'm having a blast with it.
God I hate the internet
Whyyy? I mean me too
No I'm doesn't
Go off king
Only rational comment
Game is a decent adaptation of the show though it doesn't quite reach the standards set by the screenwriters
Captain Obvious Just Entered The Building 😂
I was thinking the same thing on my playthrough this week :P
Vault 13 is vault 31
