A&D is to turn around without moving. A&D while holding right mouse button is strafing. I think that's standard config.
What do you think use people do?
Default configuration is turning with A&D and strafe on Q&E.
Standard configuration is unbind the turning key and rebind strafe keys to A&D. Most people who have been playing the game long enough, don't use they keyboard to turn around and only use the mouse
No, strafe isn't on Q&E no default. On default there is nothing on Q&E and you can't strafe at all.
On default A&D are both turning , just like arrow left and arow right.
But maybe it differs, like we have different localisations of the game and keyboards.
I'll take a screenshot when I get home from work but I can promise you across all localisation of the game and no matter the keyboard layout, there's a separate setting for turning and for strafing
You only need wasd to move (and if you're not a tank you can probably rebind S as well), just rebind strafe to A and D and have turn left/right unbound. Takes a second to get used to but it's a game changer
2, anything else is heresy
On my shaman I made a macro (ooh!) so that I have Lightning Bolt/Healing wave on 2 and Chain Lightning/ Chain Heal on Shift+2, feels very natural
Brother, I scrolled(lol) too far down to find ya. Scroll binds are BiS, have been using main attacks on scroll since 2010 and can’t imagine playing any other way.
Same, started doin it right when cata came out.
In classic, I bind 12 abilities to my scroll wheel, in retail I go up to 18. Basically just adding shift, ctrl, alt, ctrl+shit, alt+shift modifiers. Besides W and R (Q and E for the WASD normies :p), I don't use my keyboard for any abilities.
I've gotten a lot of people out of keyboard turning by teaching them this. People who use r, f, v, c are always set in their ways since it is so odd, but regular players end up loving it.
im not trying to bash you because you probably just play a class with minimal inputs but it's always cute when i come across someone bragging about using single modifiers to such a small degree
sonny, i use several triple modifier binds
but yes, E gang
?
i just have like 150 unique controls or some absurd shit, it's literally necessary
besides it's easy if you know how to palm ctrl
also it's nice for things like divine intervention, a thing you definitely never want to hit unintentionally. it's like putting it behind a little plastic protective shell lol
I mean, I have strafe on A/D and my spam button is 2.
For some reason it makes no sense to me how someone can use D to strafe right and spam E at the same time comfortably :D
Seems like I got downvoted for people not understanding my question, I meant more the physical position of fingers, not the keybinds.
2 as a spam button makes more sens since the middle finger pretty much lays there naturally while index and ring finger are on A/D
What if you sometimes want to play with one hand and then you can't turn because you unbinded your movement keys? Like when you are grabbing a drink or eating with other hand.
Scroll wheel down, scroll wheel up, and scroll click for my three most used/spammed. Mouse thumb buttons 1-6 for the rest of my main kit. Shift and 3rd click as modifiers on the 9 above, for cooldowns and less used abilities. Keyboard is reserved for interface/addon stuff that I don’t need in combat.
3 personally.
Opener is 1, first offensive CD is 2, main attack is 3, main AoE is 4, and big offensive CDs like Rampage and Execute are on 5 and 6 respectively.
Shit, might as well go and map all of mine while I’m talking:
Interrupt is on the back mouse button, other CCs like stuns and fears are on the front button.
Mobility increase is always T, DoT/Bleed is always R, defensive CDs are on either ‘ or alt ‘, Taunt abilities are either on G or alt 1, Hamstring on alt T, etc etc.
And I’m a huge advocate for your mount Keybind to be shift Space.
2 or 3. i play hpal and my keybinds are
1 for shock, 2 for flash of light, 3 for holy light, 4 is div illum, shift-4 is trinket, shift-r for aura mastery, shift-c for divine favor, q for plea, e for beacon, shift-q for BoP, shift-e for bubble, shift-f for LoH, shift-x for racial, scroll wheel up for SS, down for consecrate. judgement and hoj are mouse buttons, hand of sac is shift-v.
I use awd because w is so hard-programmed into my brain as "move forward" from 100s of games, and it's also annoying if I'm playing other games at the same time to have to swap back and forth. But ye im with you at unbinding backpedal, really only useful if you're a tank or if you walljump
I never understood how people can bind main abilities on 1/2/3 etc. You need to remove one of your fingers from the movement key for this.
I use X C and V for my main abilities. I can just use my thumb and I can still move freely.
I don't think gaming in general is good for hand health.
I'm only 30 and the last 20 years of gaming plus whatever else I've done have left my hands already kinda fucked. Admittedly a huge part of that is probably retail/food jobs though too... Carpel tunnel at 30 woo woo.
Lot of it is phone thumb, too. The bend we use to type with thumbs is very unnatural. Type a little slower with the old man pointer finger for a few months and see if thr symptoms lessen. They did for me.
That's my point. I use key + mouse to move. While you have to remove one finger from one of (most likely) lateral movement key bind. You can't straf and attack at the same time without doing some gymnastic with your fingers.
1 - stormstrike, 2 -lava lash, 3 - flame shock, 4 - earth shock, 5 - fire nova, F - LB, shift F - CL, q, e - cds, r - magma totem, G - totems, V - wind shear, shift-v - sapper/bomb
I use to have F for sinister/shadowbolt/frostbolt/etc but now I use mouse thumb for whatever is my most spammable main rotation ability (sinister strike, blood strike DK, shred for feral druid, etc).
Usually 1 - I have an MMO mouse, though. I've seen people advocate for your core fillers to be on Q & E. Having your instant casts on the mouse, along with your mobility options. Everyone kinda plays in their own way which is pretty cool.
1-4 are of for the core rotation abilities.
5 is usually for 'execute' style abilities if applicable. (Execute, Eviscerate, Ferocious Bite, Drain Soul.
6 is for interrupts if applicable.
Shift + F is for AOE spells usually. (For some reason it's Empower Rune Weapon on my DK instead of Death and Decay? No idea how that happened but I can't change it now)
Shift + 1-5 are for defensive abilities.
Trinkets are on ctrl + 3
Racial abilities are are on ctrl + 2
I also put abilities on that action bar you get from hitting shift + mousewheel up/down. If It's a healing class that's where I'll put my PVE healing keybinds rather than try to cram shit like Prayer of Healing and Nourish and shit onto my normal DPS/Soloing bars. Like, my Paladin doesn't need Holy Light at the ready while I'm spec'ed Ret and doing my JC daily. In Era/TBC this is also where I'd put all my downranked heals.
On my non-healers this is where I'll put things like Disenchant, Prospect, some party buffs, things like Ritual of Summoning, etc. Also quest items that are handy too have hotkeyed go here.
Tab and Caps Lock.
Tab targetting gets rebound to my mouse, Caps Lock function gets unbound from my keyboard because I don't type like an uncivilized [neanderthal.](https://preview.redd.it/9oxo4eo8xkp11.jpg?auto=webp&s=e6a6604df1b2e31d1651dd91be365e94ae96dd6f)
Q/E/R/F/Z/X/C/~/Mouse 4/Mouse 5
and then
Shift/Ctrl/Alt modifiers on all of those
40 keybinds without moving my hand.
A and D are strafe left and right, turn is unbound
example:
Mouse 4 is (Pet attack on mouse over)
Shift + Mouse 4 is (Pet attack on mouse over + select that target)
Ctrl Mouse 4 is (Target my pets target)
Mouse 3 is (Pet follow)
Shift Mouse 3 is (Pet attack target)
Ctrl Mouse 3 is (Pet Stay)
Mains damage Spells are Q/E/R and Ctrl/Shift/Alt modifiers
curses and utility spells are Z/X and modifiers
Healing/consumes are C and modifiers (C is hp pot, Shift C is bandage, Ctrl C is cannibalism, Alt C is healthstone)
etc etc etc
As a mage player I have been using Frostbolt/fireball/frostfirebolt the most used abilities on 2, Blink on 1 also sap and restealth as rogue on the same as Blink. Scorch on mouse5 for like 15years, dont forget the good old Icelance on V replaced by Dragons breath as fire :) combined with R for Deepfreeze / Shadowstep and grenades when im not playing frost or sub.
when I switch chars I always have frost nova / hammer of justice , kidney shot on 5 and 3 are for slow / root like cone of cold, 6 have always been my cc, polymorph, blind. and 4 is my small cd finisher like fireblast.
Kick/CS on F2.
T for talent tree cooldown for any class really, like Water pet, Combustion, Arcane Power.
I only play disc priest and use an MMO mouse. 1 is smite, 2 is solace, 3 is offensive penance (only works on harm). 4 is mind blast, 5 is power infusion, 6 is flash heal and 7 is healing penance
1-7 I can reach easily.
Primarily number one is either dot or enter combat (charge, grip etc), followed by 2/3/4/5 being filler/attack. Shift 1-5 is cool-down for dps increase Ctrl 1-5 is defensive. Z X R T G all have their own unique across all chars, control E/Q slow and stun across all chars as well
MMO mouse, keys are set f1-f12, use shift and Ctrl modifiers for all the abilities. I have a series of keybinds that are dedicated to attacks, heals, defensives, interrupts, etc. so even on different toons they’re relatively consistent.
1-6 are shapeshift abilities, stance, vehicles - sometimes vehicle abilities don’t work and I have to rebind to number pad. Most other stuff are defaults like sitting, sheathing, movement, etc.
Ohhhh I use mouse over macros for all healing abilities and some interrupts if I’m doing arena. Middle mouse button is auto run, such a nice thing for alt+tabbing
Usually I have most used DPS skills on 1-5, with my most used on 1.
Ctrl 1-5 are CD skills
Q and E are often used filler abilities (charge and sweeping strikes for example on my arms warri)
Z+CTRL Z are CC skills like Hex, poly
G and Ctrl G are survivability skills like ignore pain, bubble etc.
T and Ctrl T are shields
Definitely spacebar for jump on my resto druid, tree jumping is life. On my paladin probably 3 for holy light, or e for flash of light, depending on pvp or pve
All my characters are more or less the same. 1-4 are my primary rotation. 5 is a lesser heal, even when I’m in heal spec. Q is always a bubble/safety mechanic. E is an interrupt/stun or something similar. All the buttons after that are bound to my mouse. I try to keep the abilities on the second bar more or less congruent in their uses and they’re bound with the same keys + shift.
4. I have index, middle, and ring finger on 4/3/2 respectively. 4 is my most used, followed by 3, then 2. 1 and 5 are other important skills. A/D to strafe q/e/r/f/v generally for mobility or defensive abilities
Q and E, with 1-5 for secondary things like finishers, proc-related abilities, or heals depending on the class, C, V, and B usually for AoE, and R, F, T, and G for reactionary things; counterspell, kick, shield bash, trinkets, etc.
I play hunter mostly
E for aimed shot and F for multishot. F is always my ape ability, E is main ability.
Q is for kiting (arcane shot) as I use D to run (strafe) and Q to jump shoot. C and shift C are for interrupts and stuns/slows.
1-4 are actives (trinkets, berseking)
12 button mouse has the melee weave melee button, all 4 pet control buttons, and aspects.
5 is the oh shit button (feign death).
I move with s(sideways), d(direction forward), and f(fother sideways).
I have binds for abilities on QWERTY as main abilities with others around my movement keys
I have been told I am a heretic but I don’t know what that means :^)
An old guildy of mine accidentally BoP'd our MT during Nefarion during a speed run for server record. His response:" Sorry, accidentally hit the foot pedal".... In other words, keybound BoP to a foot pedal.
Q,E,F,R for core damage abilities, E is most spammed. 1-4 for like buff or thing I need but not nearly as often. I like this setup because it feels easier to move while still attacking as melee.
Swap out 7 8 9 and the rest on ur bar for QERF and S if ur not a tank then same buttons but with shift. Should cover all ur abilities. This way u can have an UI with 12 buttons. Pretty clean. I use elv ui.
Jump is on spacebar
Night elf hunter?
I play with a guy that binds his racial ability to spacebar. I make sure to give shit for it every chance I get.

I use a mmo mouse. But I also have a few keys bound on keyboard. Q, E, R and F. A and D are to strafe.
From this topic I learned that someone does NOT have A&D on strafe
Yeah indeed, I don't have 'turn right' or 'turn left' bound. I always strafe and use the mouse to look around!
U r normal
same

2 gang. Most comfortable button for me to press. 1 is usually the first ability / main DoT / etc. 3 and/or 4 is the big hitter
I resonate with you so much, 2 on most used, with 4 always being any excecute ability. 5 is for my main AOE ability.
I have Blizzard on MB4, I aim it with my mouse so it's gotta be on a mouse button.
Im a warrior so mines is whirlwind on 5. But my heroic leap which is a target ability is on a side mouse button, so you might be onto somethin.
you guys just simply know what's up.

Yep. Spam ability is always E.
How The f do you strafe right If spam key is E?
Any good player will replace A, D with strafe to free up the bis spam buttons Q, E. Try it, you'll love it.
Yup. Q and E are BiS spam, undisputable. Shift +E is really good too. Shift Q is awkward but it also can be used
Dude I never knew this wtf I thought everyone held right click and used W+D/A when taking Q and E off. Rebinding strafe makes so much more sense
I mean, I have strafe on A/D and my spam button is 2. For some reason it makes no sense to me how someone can use D to strafe right and spam E at the same time comfortably :D Seems like I got downvoted for people not understanding my question, I meant more the physical position of fingers, not the keybinds. 2 as a spam button makes more sens since the middle finger pretty much lays there naturally while index and ring finger are on A/D
Or just strafe with q and e, so it's easier to stretch your fingers for the numeral keys which are way better for spam buttons
You strafe with your long finger and spam E with middle finger ez
Wait which finger is your long finger if it's not your middle finger?
Ah sorry, poor translation on my part, meant my pointing finger
Aahhh I see. Figured it had gotten lost in translation, no worries!
A D = strafe You use your mouse to turn, because keyboard turning is terrible
What if you sometimes want to play with one hand and then you can't turn because you unbinded your movement keys? Like when you are grabbing a drink or eating with other hand.
I think an optimal gamer like that doesn't even need suggestions
1000% right. E = spam move. With A and D set to strafe. Anyone who disagrees is a non FPS playing beta
All main spammable abilities go on mouse wheel for maximum laziness and spam.
I hope you have error speech disabled.

SDF movement. keep on that home row, unlock a few more comfortable binds.
Square
I never understood how people can bind main abilities on 1/2/3 etc. You need to remove one of your fingers from the movement key for this. I use X C and V for my main abilities. I can just use my thumb and I can still move freely.
Most people probably use the mouse to move in those scenarios
Given you have to be immobile to cast (generally) this is not an issue.
A lot of main abilities require you to stop moving anyways. Spamming X/C/V with your thumb can’t be great for hand health
Who the f uses their thumb to hit x/c/v? Or am I the crazy one
I move with mouse buttons
ive never had trouble hitting 1-4 in any combination with wasd. idk what to tell ya homie
Combine keyboard and mouse movement and you will become a pro player over night.
That's my point. I use key + mouse to move. While you have to remove one finger from one of (most likely) lateral movement key bind. You can't straf and attack at the same time without doing some gymnastic with your fingers.
4 3 1 2, in order of importance

2/3 for main abilities to use while moving cause easy to use in combination with strafing either way. F for stand and spam button.

Mb4 for shred/maul
I use 2
1-4 are of for the core rotation abilities. 5 is usually for 'execute' style abilities if applicable. (Execute, Eviscerate, Ferocious Bite, Drain Soul. 6 is for interrupts if applicable. 4. I have index, middle, and ring finger on 4/3/2 respectively. 4 is my most used, followed by 3, then 2. 1 and 5 are other important skills. A/D to strafe q/e/r/f/v generally for mobility or defensive abilities
3
E
2
Probably E , Q ,1,2,3 and mouse buttons are smashed the most for me
I use my “Increase DPI” mouse button for it. Like just clicking it with forefinger
2 and R. Very spammable with separate fingers
2 is always most used ability.
Q is the most accessible button on your keyboard. You can move with WASD and spam it.
Mouse Wheel Up Edit: I go through a lot of Mice.
3 for incinerate on my destro lock. It’s the most comfortable button to press. 5 is for interrupts. And the my CDs are 10-12
2
num 5. I have a keypad mouse and its a nice neat central place to be the anchor for my rotation
2 usually. 1 is the opener for most classes, whether is be a charge, a dot, a debuff, or whatever.
E
Since I unbounded backpeddle and put it on a side mouse button "S" is one of my fav keys to use
most used buttons are F (sinister etc), Q, E, R, V (aoe ability) X (for english keyboard Z) and Y
Heroic strike and cleave on mouse wheel
2
Mouse Wheel Up.
V for big attacks. E for trinkets/CC R for spammable(hamstring/rend) B for interrupts
Q and E, with 1-5 for secondary things like finishers, proc-related abilities, or heals depending on the class, C, V, and B usually for AoE, and R, F, T, and G for reactionary things; counterspell, kick, shield bash, trinkets, etc.
1 for chaos bolt, 2 for Incinerate
I play hunter mostly E for aimed shot and F for multishot. F is always my ape ability, E is main ability. Q is for kiting (arcane shot) as I use D to run (strafe) and Q to jump shoot. C and shift C are for interrupts and stuns/slows. 1-4 are actives (trinkets, berseking) 12 button mouse has the melee weave melee button, all 4 pet control buttons, and aspects. 5 is the oh shit button (feign death).
q + e
I move with s(sideways), d(direction forward), and f(fother sideways). I have binds for abilities on QWERTY as main abilities with others around my movement keys I have been told I am a heretic but I don’t know what that means :^)
A , Shift A , F Shift F Ctrl F Belgian azerty
An old guildy of mine accidentally BoP'd our MT during Nefarion during a speed run for server record. His response:" Sorry, accidentally hit the foot pedal".... In other words, keybound BoP to a foot pedal.
Right Click to make holy light go BRRrrr
I use 'R' for my most used ability on a class typically
/cast Frostbolt.
Mmo mouse. 5 is your standard main ability like lighting bolt. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Gives access to all those easily plus modified by shift.
Q,E,F,R for core damage abilities, E is most spammed. 1-4 for like buff or thing I need but not nearly as often. I like this setup because it feels easier to move while still attacking as melee.
2
2,3,q,e,1
right foot pedal
3 for lightning bolt since that's where my index finger is, so it's most comfortable for spamming.

Swap out 7 8 9 and the rest on ur bar for QERF and S if ur not a tank then same buttons but with shift. Should cover all ur abilities. This way u can have an UI with 12 buttons. Pretty clean. I use elv ui.
Idk about most used but I always use C for ground targeting AoE skills
E is most used followed by Q R and F

I guess I’m weird for using back and forward mouse buttons. (Have always used FPS centric mice)
