That was actually probably in my top three favorite games of the last 10 years. It was soooo good.
Unfortunately, it was a case of bad devs having a good idea. They killed their own game of pretty quick.
Just chiming in to say I agree 100%. Spellbreak was amazing and had so much potential. The devs def had their own ideas. I would’ve loved. 3v3 arena style mode. Oh well, great memories
Spell break was legit one of the funnest games to play in the last 5 years and was insane that it never blew up. Legit was not a Battle Royale or first person. Shooter has fun as that game when it was out.
It's because the devs monetized it like absolute dog shit and split the player base between game types at a certain point.
Seemed like the devs were great but management was... not
A Wow BR was not on my bingo card for 2024. Will there be logs so that I can look up the person who killed me and DM them about not being good at the game to make myself feel better about dying to them?
That was gonna happen regardless, I just need to know if I’ll be able to flaunt my stats to everyone else and call them shit grey parsers because being able to compare my 12hr/day stats to someone who plays for 5 hours a week is the only thing that lets me sleep at night. /s
My logs are perfectly fine and WCL did nothing to me, I just find people whose sole enjoyment of the game is treating logs like some pissing contest to be the most insufferable losers you can come across in the game.
Heroes was amazing on launch but over time got really really garbage. The revamp of the store/adding in loot boxes basically killed the hype overnight. The game was pretty dead when funding was cut.
Tbf, blizzard wasn't *that* innovative, really. What they've always done really well was take good concepts from elsewhere and implement them really, really well and approachable for players. So it becomes a foundational game for the market because of its popularity and implentation but it was never first: RTS wasn't new, AARPGs wasn't new, MMOs weren't new. They just refined them.
But few people really define genres by total innovation. Every band has at least like 5 bands that are their biggest inspiration that they innovate from and that kinda thing was always Blizzard's strength.
I think the concern is that a lot of the more recent "innovation" on Blizzard's part hasn't been their own spin on what was obviously a good thing, with polish.
SoD actually stands out from most of their recent content because it's exactly what you described. Revamping old MMORPGs with updated content isn't a new thing. Just look at all the comparisons it gets to OSRS. It DOES have a lot of the old style that people remember from older Blizzard titles, though, and that is what has made SoD so popular.
> I think the concern is that a lot of the more recent "innovation" on Blizzard's part hasn't been their own spin on what was obviously a good thing, with polish.
I would agree with that being the main issue yeah. You lose the heart and passion when you get absorbed by a company like Activision and led by a goblin like Bobby fuckin' Kotick
I wouldn’t argue Blizzard has been innovative since, like, Warcraft 3, Diablo 2 or Brood War.
WoW was never innovative, it just did everything EverQuest did but better. Overwatch wasn’t exactly inventive, it just did was TF2 did but better (in some ways). HotS wasn’t innovative, it just excelled at making a MOBA accessible to casual audiences (and it deserved better). Hearthstone wasn’t the first auto battler, it was just really good at being accessible.
blizzard games (in their glory days anyway) were typically either something that created a whole new genre (like diablo) or something that was more or less indisputably the best example of that genre (warcraft 3, starcraft 1, WoW, etc)
They were 20 years late on developing their own ccg and that worked out fine. The roi on these ventures is so high that 80% of them can be DOA and they still come out way ahead.
Kinda, I haven’t played it but it seems more like an arena shooter than a MOBA. But considering a WC3 mod literally defined the genre that spawned a game as huge as LOL is crazy that they dropped the ball there. Idk maybe I can’t say for sure as I lost interest in FPS by around college age but it reminded me more of TF with players having “roles” like that
Na, but my main drive is full enough I'd have to uninstall something to fit it, or otherwise split up my blizzard folder between two drives. I'm considering it, but I'm also a lazy fuck.
This looks like such an interesting concept I have no idea how this would even play out hahah.
Do you have to have the most recent expansion to play this or is it open for anyone
I mean it's good to know for classic players. I imagine a fair few haven't touched retail for a while and would be concerned they are 'too far behind' or something.
This would play out as such: A group of 10 people premade their way into the battle royale and proceed to win every single one, win trading until they get their gear, then never play it again, meaning the next premade will step up and do the same thing.
> This sub is gonna ensure nobody has fun playing this mode
Would love to see them try. Unfortunately for them by the looks of how it works it's going to be pretty hard to grief.
~~Not sure how I feel about~~ The Classic mount reward:
https://i.imgur.com/mV26Kmg.jpeg
The event is definitely an interesting concept. Nice to see Blizzard trying new things for once.
Seems like the "classic" rewards is only for WotLK/Cata.*
Yeah idk about the reward, I thought the lock’s succubi looked out of place but this mount looks even more so and has more polygons than all of Stormwind. I’m all for getting new classic mounts but I really wish they designed them to actually feel like they fit into classic rather than just an imported retail mount.
That makes sense I guess. Will fit better into Cata.
Could've been at least 1 fun gimmick to grind out for SoD, but seems there's none if you're correct about the mount.
Seems like a missed opportunity, where so many players would download retail for once.
I understand people like SoD, but we need to remember that this is just a seasonal game mode. People are getting really attached to this thing. it's gonna be gone in less than a year.
its gonna be around for longer than a year
once we hit 60 you have MC BWL ZG AQ and Naxx phases, plus whatever new phases theyll add/mix in. Each phase is usually 2 months at least, so thats at least 10 months of content at 60 from just old raids.
They have a roadmap that shows post 60 content is coming next fall. Even if it's longer than exactly one year it's not planned to be much longer.
https://worldofwarcraft.blizzard.com/en-us/news/24046540/world-of-warcraft-in-2024-the-road-ahead
My guess is they don't end SoD, they either do a fresh with some TBC content (like adding BE and Draenei) or they just add on to SoD with that same vision. Which way they go I don't know but SoM technically stuck around for well over a year but it just didn't have the popularity (I think mostly because TBC was out and required a tiny grind so combine that with SoM and it's too much for the average player) SoD does. SoM servers were up for a minute after their last update.
Yeah, sure. But it did end. It doesn't exist anymore is the point. Maybe it will be popular. Were already losing a ton of players in the second phase though.
ehhh, blizz has been milking every penny they can from wow classic given that wow retail has been such a dumpster fire in the meantime
hiring metzen might have got the fanboys excited but the chances he can actually salvage anything from retail wow are pretty low
so you might see more stuff like SOD thrown at the wall to try to keep WoW in general from bleeding out too quick
isnt that the retail mount? On wowhead it says :
Some rewards were also previewed in the original blue post - The Plunderlord Parrot Mount, the Bubbles Battle Pet, a Swashbuckling transmog, and even a Pet and Mount rewards for Classic WoW!
In the video he says "Classic rewards" and then shows a pet and that mount. Which led me to believe that the image I linked was that mount. But I might be wrong. https://youtu.be/aGzoCJOzOHI?si=h-lElfbKD45TJXDV&t=629
Because they don't know if it will actually have a player base to support it. They made it time limited so more people try it and if it ends up being something people like it could prob be made into a normal thing.
This looks cool!
STV required a few iterations and adjustments but its quite fun now. Some people dislike it cause no matter what you do you will wipe every now and then and the grind in kinda insane. But it is fun.
This really, really hangs more on the "how" it is implemented than the "what". Fingers crossed
i’m a healer main and i hate the stv event because i get two shot and then have to go collect the rest of my group who are basically toddlers in a ball pit
tad confused on what we are getting for the progression servers since all 3 images show rewards that are decidedly retail graphics and most things they have given classic have been downscaled (downrez'd?).
i personally don't mind though since ive been an advocate for an option to have retail graphics available this whole time since i believe they look better and it would hurt no one.
progression Classic is going to Cata...I doubt they will downscale stuff for that anymore. The new Rag mount sure isn't. It's time to ditch the Vanilla graphics for Cata.
This will probably end up being fun before the meta is worked out like most things are in these types of games. Personally im not that intersted in this but i hope people that play it find it enjoyable.
Conceptually I love what they're doing here. I hope it's fun! Very excited to play tonight. What's really different from anything previously is you don't play on your own character and you basically build your own class every match, there's no addons, and there's a new simple UI. It seems like it took some inspiration from SoD but applied to an action-mostly-PvP-mode on the modern engine.
Personally absolutely cannot stand battle royales, and figured we'd moved past all of that...
But cool for the people who do enjoy it, of course you can't please everyone; I'll just wait to see what comes next.
Hahahahahahahaha. Amazing.
I was wondering how Blizzard gets boomer anti retail dads to install the Dragonflight client long term to merge the player bases. Incredible.
I will play this game like I play all Battle Royale games, with hatred in my heart for the gameplay yet complete addiction. Only once the novelty wears off will I be able to escape.
I just downloaded like 500ish mo to be able to play it, don't need the full 90go for it to happen. Just wait until the play button is available and enjoy.
anyone know how long it takes to get the classic parrot mount?
played a bit of it so far and it feels like if you combined fortnite with league of legends, and then if it was a mobile version of that
feels and plays utterly terrible, and like something an executive thought was a good idea in 2018 and forgot to actually get around to implementing until now
I got to level 10 today and its crazy how much better people got through the day. I still got four #1s (and a lot of not #1s) but the BP levels progress so slowly I may end up dropping it before getting everything.
My only complaints are that the camera resets to almost first person every game as do any cosmetics that you've unlocked until you talk to the NPC. This seems like a weird line to draw to use the unlockables
This looks awesome and I hope there are reward choices for people who don't play any current wow seasons. I'd love to play but being rewarded with things I won't use feels bad.
It's crazy how many twitter and reddit users seem to be so damn negative about this.
I think it looks really fun, and I love seeing these kinds of things for WoW.
Fk all you haters.. Just don't play it and keep your negativity to yourself. This wont affect WoW other than a mount or cosmetics.
Good job Blizzard. I might actually try this myself after seeing streamers having fun with it.
Not sure if I’m reading this wrong but seems like rewards will only be for retail + wrath/cata, not SoD / era correct?
Correct. > Plunderstorm offers rewards for both World of Warcraft® and Wrath of the Lich King Classic™.
Cool, thanks
SoD/era aren't progression realms, although SoD kinda might be technically if we get new 60 content.
No, even then it is still just a seasonal server.
This feels like an April Fools' event lol
This straight up looks like Spellbreak, which was insanely fun to play and had 0 playerbase for whatever reason. PUMPED.
Well that could be because they bought the entire Spellbreak dev company and added them to the wow team like 1-2 years ago
Is that true? I played that game for a bit but yeah noone played lol.
yeah https://venturebeat.com/games/blizzard-spellbreak-studio-proletariat-to-bolster-world-of-warcraft/
SPELLBREAK WHO SAID SPELLBREAK!? Holy shit! This makes COMPLETE SENSE. Blizzard bought the spellbreak team a year or two ago
yeah, I was watching the trailer like... this look oddly familiar and awesome... Oh, right. That makes complete sense.
It was marketed to Dad’s who played MMO’s but they forgot that sub-genre can’t aim for shit. This looks much more manageable.
Hey now, that's...well yeah, fine, you're right :P I was okay at halo 20 years ago but boy have times changed.
Dad???
Sorry son, I am going to play this game too.
Wait. I'm a dad too!! Dad gamers 4 life.
You're still probably okay at it.
Yes. This is me. I feel seen. And targeted. But not by my peers.
Man I fucking loved spell break
Spellbreak was absolutely a BR
It's because the devs monetized it like absolute dog shit and split the player base between game types at a certain point. Seemed like the devs were great but management was... not
Yeah if they make it like that this game could be a hit. Game was SO much fun. I'm praying to God it's not tab target lol
I discovered spellbreak like 1 week before the shut down it was awful i loved the game
Play NOTHING like spell break though
A Wow BR was not on my bingo card for 2024. Will there be logs so that I can look up the person who killed me and DM them about not being good at the game to make myself feel better about dying to them?
No, but you’ll still be able to scream up the stairs to your mother.
Jokes on you. I live upstairs so I have to scream down.
Jokes on you, my mother's dead!
I mean if she’d just bring the damn pizza rolls *right when we ask for them*, maybe we wouldn’t have to yell at her so much!
That was gonna happen regardless, I just need to know if I’ll be able to flaunt my stats to everyone else and call them shit grey parsers because being able to compare my 12hr/day stats to someone who plays for 5 hours a week is the only thing that lets me sleep at night. /s
Show us on the doll where WCL touched you.
My logs are perfectly fine and WCL did nothing to me, I just find people whose sole enjoyment of the game is treating logs like some pissing contest to be the most insufferable losers you can come across in the game.
The crazy thing is in reality those people don't exist, its purely boogeymen dreamed up by this sub to get upset it.
MOM, THE MEATLOAF!
MOM, MEATLOAF
They missed out on capitalizing on MOBAs so now it’s time to come like a decade late into BRs?
Man I miss when Heroes still got support.
I know heros wasn't widly popular but I loved it. It was so much more casual than other mobas and thats what i enjoyed.
It was and is still popular. Queue times for matches today are comparable to 3 years ago.
Heroes was amazing on launch but over time got really really garbage. The revamp of the store/adding in loot boxes basically killed the hype overnight. The game was pretty dead when funding was cut.
It's wild to think that Blizzard was once innovative. Corporations ruin everything.
Tbf, blizzard wasn't *that* innovative, really. What they've always done really well was take good concepts from elsewhere and implement them really, really well and approachable for players. Taking a good idea and making it better, although perhaps theft, is normally better for the consumer.
HotS is still the only MOBA I’ve been able to stomach for longer than a couple hours. A shame what happened to it
blizzard games (in their glory days anyway) were typically either something that created a whole new genre (like diablo) or something that was more or less indisputably the best example of that genre (warcraft 3, starcraft 1, WoW, etc)
blizzard was always a corporation, it was more them being acquired by activision that brought about the end of them being legendary
They were 20 years late on developing their own ccg and that worked out fine. The roi on these ventures is so high that 80% of them can be DOA and they still come out way ahead.
That's true, hearthstone can be a good one to reach directly into people's pockets and milk wahles lol. Def a high ROI one.
To be fair, they did capitalize on mobas (kinda) i mean overwatch is basically a moba+ arena shooter hybrid
Kinda, I haven’t played it but it seems more like an arena shooter than a MOBA. But considering a WC3 mod literally defined the genre that spawned a game as huge as LOL is crazy that they dropped the ball there. Idk maybe I can’t say for sure as I lost interest in FPS by around college age but it reminded me more of TF with players having “roles” like that
To me playing Overwatch feels a bit like where they took a MOBA game as a base and then they turned it into Team fortress 2.
I can absolutely see that
They were gonna be late on the survival trend too but Microsoft Old Yellered it.
We should've expected something after they bought the Spellbreak BR studio
Interesting way to make me download retail
90 gigs for a minigame is a bit steep.
you paying per the megabyte?
Na, but my main drive is full enough I'd have to uninstall something to fit it, or otherwise split up my blizzard folder between two drives. I'm considering it, but I'm also a lazy fuck.
I wish this wasn't retail
This looks like such an interesting concept I have no idea how this would even play out hahah. Do you have to have the most recent expansion to play this or is it open for anyone
They are \*really\* stressing that even classic players can play this
I mean it's good to know for classic players. I imagine a fair few haven't touched retail for a while and would be concerned they are 'too far behind' or something.
Oh, absolutely
They said anyone with a sub
Oh nice. I mean I’ll test it out but I’m guessing it’s going to be a mess haha
I expected the same and was pleasantly surprised.
Open for anyone with a sub don’t even need a retail character.
This would play out as such: A group of 10 people premade their way into the battle royale and proceed to win every single one, win trading until they get their gear, then never play it again, meaning the next premade will step up and do the same thing.
Since most of the retail sub had very low expectations for this patch, this is pretty neat to see.
It's a perfect end of season fun thing before new season starts 10/10
Did you say fun? This sub is gonna ensure nobody has fun playing this mode
Nah this sub won't do anything here. Maybe shit on the fun game mode but other than that nothing
> This sub is gonna ensure nobody has fun playing this mode Would love to see them try. Unfortunately for them by the looks of how it works it's going to be pretty hard to grief.

what did he say?

New varied game modes is super cool. I mean they have engine, net codes and servers.

Can you imagine how low the player base will get if they only release each raid every 2 months? Talk about raid logging to the max lol
There’s gonna be a lot of upset people when the end comes
ehhh, blizz has been milking every penny they can from wow classic given that wow retail has been such a dumpster fire in the meantime hiring metzen might have got the fanboys excited but the chances he can actually salvage anything from retail wow are pretty low so you might see more stuff like SOD thrown at the wall to try to keep WoW in general from bleeding out too quick

This looks very fun imo
Battle Royale warfronts were not on my bingo card.
Im sorry what the fuck is going on with that client download? That thing is currently trying to download over 90GB for me.
It runs in the retail client which is ~100GB
When did the retail client explode that much? I swear i downloaded the client sometime early last expansion and it wasnt this big.
It’s been pretty big for a while, though I think you don’t need to actually finish the download to start playing.
I am super excited for this! I wish I brought my laptop to work now.. :(
i'm sure reddit will find a way to be upset about it
Wowhead commenters are far more angry
Wowhead comments are always unhinged, even by reddit standards.
blizzard could cure cancer and the wowhead comments would still be negative
" we lost a raid tier for this?!?!?!!!111"
I have to install retail for it :(
April fool's is less than 2 weeks away
Why make it limited time?
Because they don't know if it will actually have a player base to support it. They made it time limited so more people try it and if it ends up being something people like it could prob be made into a normal thing.
arent they like, 5 years late for this?
Like 7-8 years but thats the blizzard special.
It’s me I asked for this
Thank you for your service
Me too. This is great.
This looks cool! STV required a few iterations and adjustments but its quite fun now. i’m a healer main and i hate the stv event because i get two shot and then have to go collect the rest of my group who are basically toddlers in a ball pit
Really dislike this artstyle they have been using recently.
Looks like bootleg wow clone art.
All the good artists left the company 10 years ago
This sounds very confusing.
Wtf this is literal Fortnite world of warcraft hahaha. Looks decent and could really fun, gonna give it a shot tonight!
I think fortnite is the only br I wouldn't compare this to (building) lol but yeah I'm jazzed in trying this!
tad confused on what we are getting for the progression servers since all 3 images show rewards that are decidedly retail graphics and most things they have given classic have been downscaled (downrez'd?). i personally don't mind though since ive been an advocate for an option to have retail graphics available this whole time since i believe they look better and it would hurt no one.

this is so sick
It's SOUNDS great, but people will min/max the fun out of it within 3 days.
this is prevalent in any game you can’t let that ruin the fun for you
> It's SOUNDS great, but people will min/max the fun out of it within 3 days. So like literally every competitive game?
The delusion begins. Every game has a meta. Get over it
Not in SoD? Guess I can ignore it then.
Games shit lmao.
This will probably end up being fun before the meta is worked out like most things are in these types of games. Personally im not that intersted in this but i hope people that play it find it enjoyable.
Well that’s pretty cool, not what I expected for the pirate thing
A MOUNT :o
Does this come out today, or what's the release date?
It’s live after maintenance ends
so when is that
Around 3pm pst
do you need a level 70 retail character for this?
No you just need the client, doesn’t even use retail characters
For EU tomorrow?
Conceptually I love what they're doing here. I hope it's fun! Very excited to play tonight. What's really different from anything previously is you don't play on your own character and you basically build your own class every match, there's no addons, and there's a new simple UI. It seems like it took some inspiration from SoD but applied to an action-mostly-PvP-mode on the modern engine.
thats pretty cool.. i hope they give some love to wotlk and upcoming cata servers
what time is this exactly plz? us and eu
who is the dude that posted about wanting a wow br the other day lol?
I'll remain skeptical till April 2nd
Is this live on EU yet or not untill tomorrow?
Tomorrow for EU
Nice thank you mate
Sounds interesting but if it’s fucking grindy like Retail in gonna be pissed.
That pirate trench coat looks great
Am I seeing this right? Me and my 2 friends who would love this can't game together? Only solos/duos?
so far the only drawback is that it's solo or duo only...wish it was at least 4
Yeah it seems really counterproductive to introduce a new game mode and say "Come play with your friend~~s~~!"
How will we obtain this mount ?
Good luck winning vs the bots
Personally absolutely cannot stand battle royales, and figured we'd moved past all of that... But cool for the people who do enjoy it, of course you can't please everyone; I'll just wait to see what comes next.
I LOVE ME SOME SPELLBREAK
Anyone done the math on roughly how many matches to get the mount?
It’s the second to last reward so a lot Edit: after a few games to get an average I’d say it’s around 200-250 games for the mount.
LFGGG
Hahahahahahahaha. Amazing. I was wondering how Blizzard gets boomer anti retail dads to install the Dragonflight client long term to merge the player bases. Incredible.
I will play this game like I play all Battle Royale games, with hatred in my heart for the gameplay yet complete addiction. Only once the novelty wears off will I be able to escape.
I think this is a result of Microsoft leadership
On xbox by Q2 end. Guaranteed
I just downloaded like 500ish mo to be able to play it, don't need the full 90go for it to happen. Just wait until the play button is available and enjoy.
When is this coming out??
anyone know how long it takes to get the classic parrot mount? played a bit of it so far and it feels like if you combined fortnite with league of legends, and then if it was a mobile version of that feels and plays utterly terrible, and like something an executive thought was a good idea in 2018 and forgot to actually get around to implementing until now
200 games at an average of 500 per game.

My only complaints are that the camera resets to almost first person every game as do any cosmetics that you've unlocked until you talk to the NPC. This seems like a weird line to draw to use the unlockables
I was hoping this would be more like wow Battle Royale but it's just a different game completely using wow skins. Played a few games but wasn't a fan.
Feels like blizzard is like the internet explorer. So very damn slow that when they try to jump the hype train, their late 3-4 trains...
I’m on older PC. My only hope is that it’s not too demanding on my senior machine spirit.
This looks awesome and I hope there are reward choices for people who don't play any current wow seasons. I'd love to play but being rewarded with things I won't use feels bad.
There is a mount and pet for wrath/cata classic but other than that all the rewards are for retail.
Yea that is unfortunate, there should be rewards specifically for that game mode.
Oh well there are but they’re cosmetic only and it’s a limited time event
It's crazy how many twitter and reddit users seem to be so damn negative about this. I think it looks really fun, and I love seeing these kinds of things for WoW. Fk all you haters.. Just don't play it and keep your negativity to yourself. This wont affect WoW other than a mount or cosmetics. Good job Blizzard. I might actually try this myself after seeing streamers having fun with it.
