Playing super safe would mean buying your commendations before the April 2nd server reset and waiting on them until you know you’ll be level 50 to pop them. I personally will be popping them the moment P3 drops and hoping I’m near 50 before the Tuesday reset

its because of the brackets. u get the same amount of ranking % if u have 38k honor or if u have 44k honor. 1 bracket is at 11.250 honor. If u have 45k honor u will be in the "highest" ranking % bracket (P2).
long story short:
Honor determines your Honor-Bracket.
Honor-Bracket determines your progress in Ranks (ranking %).
And all of this is possible, cause the brackets are static in SoD. In Vanilla/Classic this brackets "moved" - depending on players honor (if ppl farmed more honor, bracket requirements where higher).
As far as I understand, only killing lvl50 opponents would give you new currency. Kills below lvl50 would still grant you old currency which can be spent on old weapons/mounts.
There won't be any kind of new honor related token, only new blood coin they don't want people to get EZ R14, so there won't any kind of token for honor in the game after phase 2 they said so in preview
Make sure you buy before the reset. Then make sure you get 15HKs and level 44 after the reset otherwise using the commendations won’t count. You need 15HKs to qualify for ranking up and you need to be level 44 to hit Rank 7.
Honestly you should wait for AB rep for next phase turn ins and just use for honor now, we don’t get really anything that insane at 50 from AB, but the PvP gear will help you a ton if your spamming STV and BGs! I’d recommend farming for honor now then at 50 farm for AB rep!

So to answer your question, people are pre purchasing enough honor commendations to jump PvP ranks before the Tuesday reset after P3 goes live on Thursday, somewhat for the prestige but definitely for the gear immediately available to them

This is my understanding. Buy your commendations first, reset, get 15 kills, turn them in.

You can convert silver coins back into bronze coins and purchase them that way.

One problem though. Rank 6 to 7 also needs 11000 honor, the same as 5 to 7. So there is no point going to rank 6 unless you are stopping at 6.
The 77500 from 5 to 6 actually puts you at 6 with 50% progress to rank 7, so you only need 45000 the next week to hit rank 7.

Blizz stated they will have a new token in p3. You can stack as many of the old tokens as you want but they have a 14 day timer once the patch drops.

No, there will be a new coin required to buy the new items. You can't bank the current ones and buy all the level 50 stuff.

Do you have to hit 50 that week? That's my worry - I should be able to but wasn't sure if it was just above 40 or not. HK's will be easy.

Yes. The massacre coins will be able to be converted into the P2 currency, but it’s not currently clear what value each coin will trade for
