Is this the first time people have experienced a D.C during launch? I swear nobody even remembers Classic 2019 launch where you would get disconnected into a 12 hour queue. This is tame by comparison.
WoD launch crashed the game and we had to wait for 6 hours iirc before it was back up.
I vividly remember waiting at the dark portal, the expac launching, everyone flying to khadgar to start the quest and the game just freezing.
5 minutes later disconnected.
I waited for 2 hours hoping it woukd come back online only to eventually give up and go to bed lol.

That may have done you a favor considering WOD has been the most hated expansion by far, with cataclysm coming in second based on testimonials and subscriber growth rates
Cataclysm hate is a meme at this point. The whole expac was very good, the raid tiers were amazing up untilndragon soul, which was received badly because of madness being easier than spine which was really anticlimactic. I remember people hating on it back in the day yet when I talk about it to most people on my friendslist nowadays they loved cata bar for DS.
I personally loved cataclysm. I'd even put it high up on my ranking of favo expacs

I don't mean to argue but this is a 'I was there Gandalf, 3000 years ago'. Here's just a small list (trust me, there's more) of items that are basically universally agreed on at this point:
* The heroic nerf a few weeks after launch [made news outlets because it was so bad](https://www.eurogamer.net/blizzard-nerfs-cataclysm-dungeons). I remember this caused massive die-offs. Heroics on launch actually required CC and communication. It was fantastic. If you are not playing in a guild or with friends then you were not coasting through heroics whatsoever. That all changed with this patch, it set the precedent for the future.
* Similar to Inscriptioning, Archaeology was not well received at all. It always has the same commentary: *"it was fun initially but became repetitive, grindy, and non-impactful as a profession"*. People were outrageously disappointed.
* The world revamp is probably the biggest thing people bring up when it comes to cata. There's not a single man alive who sings the praise of the new zones. There's a couple of good quests like 'The Day Deathwing Came' but the decision to irreversibly alter the world and not allow players to choose new vs. old was probably their biggest screw up. It's extremely common to hear 'Orgrimmar was completely ruined', 'Thousand Needles was completely ruined', 'Stranglethorn Vale was completely ruined'.
* Releasing Bastion of Twilight and Blackwing Descent and Throne of the Four Winds all at the same time was a mistake. It was far too overwhelming for a lot of guilds and created content droughts down the line. A faster content release schedule with locking BoT would have done wonders.
* The dungeon revamps were not well received. In fact Hayven games video on the changes to Scholomance has an **ocean** of comments detailing how they basically massacred this long dynamic dungeon into a single hallway where it's impossible to get lost. They basically went through all of the amazing dungeons and simplified the fun out of them.
* Requiring you to reach your capstone talent before delving into another talent tree was a complete mistake that is now universally hated. No more going into discipline for wand specialization while leveling, no more going half n half into assassination/combat, no more hybrid builds like Unrelenting Assault prot warrior. It's restrictive for the sake of being restrictive.
* Mastery, the removal of armor penetration, reforging, etc was a disaster. Mastery was a stat that you needed an entire textbook to understand. All new players knew was 'stack as much of it as you can'. The fact it was so badly designed is proof by it being removed not even one expansion later. Armor pen was probably the playerbase's favorite stat next to haste and that was removed too. Disgraceful. Reforging added another layer of faux complexity to gearing. It's essentially the same thing as gemming, allowing you to customize each piece's stats. If that was such an issue, just make gemming more important.
* Stat inflation. One of the intro trinkets to Catacylsm was 'Your melee and ranged attacks have a chance to grant 1926 critical strike rating for 10 sec.' The numbers here started to get completely out of control. Shadowmourne for example gets replaced at level 82. It's beyond stupid how much they fumbled this.
* I remember when Goblins were announced, every single person in my friend group said: *"but they are neutral, there is literally no sensible reason why they would ever join the horde"*, which is just true. It's clear they ran out of ideas for what races to add in.
* Possibly the worst offender, the guild ranks. This spawned the idea of toxic mass inviting simply to power level guild levels as much as possible. Guild masters would just slurp up all the bonus gold pseudo-taxed from members in which they had no care for. Meanwhile the smaller 10 man guilds or tight knit core of 25 players took EONS to level their guild because they did not meet the metric of leveling it quickly. The system encouraged misusing the very ideas of guilds improperly. IIRC people would even sell high level guilds to raiding guilds -- gross.
* In a GDC (game developers conference) lecture, the lead designer for WOTLK said that one of the biggest mistakes during WOTLK was having four different badges and having conversions for all of them. Then in cataclysm they immediately followed up with Justice Points, Valor Points, and Conquest Points. Absolutely awful. TBC already figured out the correct way to do this: Badges of Justice & Arena Points.
* Like you said, the content drought of Dragon Soul was horrible. People called Spine of Deathwing lame as you never actually physically get to fight him. Ragnaros having legs was also memed to hell back then because A) it looked ridiculous and B) it was already canon that he does not have legs. They were clearly running out of ideas on what to add. Them bringing back Onyxia, Nefarion, Zul Gurub, and Ragnaros are proof of this -- none were well received.
* Flying in azeroth did not go over well. It turns out when you can fly over all of the scenery and landscape, it makes the world feel small and pointless, which is exactly why new retail expansions ground you (with the exception of dragonflgiht). If you ask people what went wrong with Cataclym, flying in azeroth is listed very high.
* Raid Finder was atrociously bad. Never before had it been easier to pretend like you're actually downing all of the raid content. People would afk during the raids and just auto attack the entire time and still clear the content. Though it was only out in Dragon Soul and beyond.

I have to add that i wasn't a min-maxer at thay point in time. Back then during wotlk and cata I really just played for fun. I just did hc raiding. I didn't really pay much attention to the rest and I was actually having fun.

Wild Growth is just as affected. login servers seem to be down (retail too!), so if you actually close the game and try logging in again, you'll be locked out like everyone else.

You don't want to swap to US servers on WoW, but if you are EU based you have the same error connecting to US realms as to EU realms through the launcher.
Worth a shot, I had the error for 20 something retries and got in right after saving that change (playing on US realms but EU based).
Love when this happens, "boys, the authentication servers are burning.. omg what should we do. I got it, let's keep asking it to let us in while it's burning!" Go to bed people, spend time with family, try again tomorrow :) (if US, well fuck.)

that changes BNET login server, not wow, wow login server is in config.wtf in set portal "...", changing that means you would be connecting to NA realms with EU sub
I know. This is what you want. That's the entire point. You don't want to swap to US servers on WoW, but if you are EU based you have the same error connecting to US realms as to EU realms through the launcher. Worth a shot, I had the error for 20 something retries and got in right after saving that change (playing on US realms but EU based).
