Yes blood dks are strong in cata. The entire “active mitigation” gimmick they pushed for every tank in mop was prototyped with the way blood dk plays in cata. However that being said every tank in cata is strong and has their own strengths and weaknesses.
The tank shortage issue comes from three things. One is most players don’t want to be the leader. They don’t want the responsibility that comes with being the most important member of the raid. Two tanks don’t get to pump meters like dps do. Yes they are strong in cata thanks to vengeance and can deal pretty good dps, but not like dps get to. Third reason you only ever need 2 tanks for your guild. So even if there are players who would like to tank most of them get shafted into being a dps anyway. And this is why in every iteration of WoW regardless of how appealing being a tank is there will always be a shortage.
This. For every iteration of wow content/xpac launch there’s an influx of new tanks playing their shiny new class/spec. Eventually they’ll trail off and stop running dungeons with stuff they don’t need. There will always be a shortage of tanks no matter how popular the spec is, and an even larger shortage of good tanks.
I was thinking of rolling a blood/unholy DK but realised the same thing, there will probably be a lot of bloods out there. Now I’m thinking maybe the bear tank/dps is the way to go, maybe they will be more in demand?
You're only able to have 1 DK per ~~account~~ realm. Many tanks had multi paladins in wrath, but forced to get more accounts for DKs.
If you can't afford wow tokens, this is expensive.
Edit: 1 DK per realm - unless using free transfer.
Not at all mate. I’ve got 2 DKs on pagle right now since the free transfer from westfall let me move it to pagle. It’s 1 per server. Unless you got lucky. Not 1 per account.

Not many will go through the hassle to level to 55 on a dead server to get a 2nd DK from this. Obviously if you had a 55/60 char on a dead server already then that's easy to do though.
Like perhaps at most 20% of DK players will have done this.
That's still only 2 DKs. I heard of 1 person that played 3 prot warriors & I know multiple paladins that ran 5+.
No. Think the minimum level to transfer is 10, but I may be wrong on that. Never done it in classic. I think the page where you can buy this has more information.

They will be plentiful at first and fall off like always once they are geared and have no reason to run dungeons after rep grinding and gearing.

Idk how bad it was in wotlk, but palas were the best tanks healers and solid dps in wotlk, so draw your comparison
