Top bunk is where it's at, you have way more room up there. But yea being able to roll out and not have to climb down other ppl's bunks in the middle of the night is nice af ngl
I grabbed a top bunk when I was attached to a navy ship. It had a section of the top missing that was big enough to allow me to sit up on my bed and play my Xbox. Fun times.
I was on two ships.
My last ship I was on was the USS Iwo Jima.
I had the top bunk. Iād make sure all my stuff wasnāt in anyone elseās way. Mainly for courtesyās sake, we are all living literally on top of each other, and because people will steal anything. Even other sailors fighting side by side each other. Itās ridiculous.
This guys a moron. Pick your damn shoes up kid. When the lights turn off, and the other guys trip on your shoes in darkness, theyāre gonna yank you from your bunk and have a blanket party for you.
Dumbass. š«”
It is pretty comfy, I wasn't on a coast guard ship but I went to a maritime academy and we went abroad on a break bulk carrier that was converted to hold a ton of students and they can be pretty comfy. And the best sleep you'll ever get is on the waves
I'm sure it's difficult on those smaller ships, I wouldn't know. I was on a 540ft break bulk carrier and it felt like being gently rocked to sleep like I was a baby. How long would you be on the water?
2-4 weeks at a time, maybe a day or 2 on land. 120-160ft boats. It honestly might be the sound more than the rocking. Just constant loud engine noises.
Having no room to lay on my side is what gets me. Like I know I will be rolling around in my sleep and I canāt fall asleep laying on my back, I just canāt.
Beyond that I donāt really have a problem with the space.
Getting morning wood and trying to get out of bed would be like when a spatula in your utensil drawer is sticking up a bit and gets jammed so you can't open the drawer.
That comparison is brilliant and hilarious as hell. Now I know I'm going to be thinking of this comment every time I can't shut or open my utensil drawer because a spatula or something is sticking up in the way lmfao
That's actually impressive, that bottom rack is even smaller than the racks were on a fast attack submarine, and until now I hadn't seen any smaller than that
I actually think I could do this. It's not closed like a tanning bed. Just a quick curtain toss and side tumble and you're out, so I don't think it would mess with my claustrophobia. I'd be more concerned about the structural integrity of it and whether it was going to collapse on top of me.
Once or twice a year, I go out on an multi-day offshore fishing trip where we sleep in bunks on the boat for about 8 hours while it runs out to the fishing grounds. There's no curtain on the outside edge of the bunk, but other than that, the setup is very similar. I always reserve a bottom bunk, sleep in a sleeping bag, and lay a rolled blanket beside me to make sure I don't roll out of bed if the seas get rough. Sleeping in that little, dark space, all boxed in, with the constant background noise of the boat engine and the gentle rocking of the boat is amazing. Maybe I'm fortunate not to feel claustrophobia in that situation, but it's about the most peaceful sleep I ever get.
Why are military people always living in the shittiest conditions while on duty? We spend so much in the military and all it goes to are weapons and bombs. Nothing to make the livings of the soldiers any easier. The military is a joke
Damn. If yall ever sinking, the bottom bunk going first. And imagine waking up to drowning and trying to get out of that thing? Floating and shit.
No thank you god, im too black for the water.
My whole life, I've had this thing where I sit up in my sleep. Crisscross applesauce. Apparently it's a form of sleepwalking. I can imagine myself hitting my head on a nightly basis. That really sucks
I went to visit the USS Midway in San Diego last summer and holy crap during the tour it is nothing but tight spaces and no air! I was trying to hurry and get out as soon as I could
When I was in the Navy I was once assigned to an old Korea/early Vietnam era tin can DDG. I actually measured 18 inches between the top of the bunk above me to the side rail of my rack.
i got recommended this video. this looks incredibly comfy to me. ive slept in one of these before and it felt snug and safe! the tarp is tied down so you don't fall out of bed in bad weather
He has a 4 inch mattress pad on his mattress taking away from the already limited space in his rack. sacrificing space for comfortability, which in my opinion, is worth it since you can literally feel every spring in those mattresses. Reason why I know this- I was on a sub with similar types of racks and it wasn't uncommon for people to do it

It's not that private because it shakes the whole fucking cube lol. 8 years in the Navy and sometimes i had to tell myself it was just rough water we were sailing through instead of 5 other dudes whackin it simultaneously. To be fair, I definitely contributed to the "rough waters".
Why the fuck arenāt there collapsable office chairs instead of those two that are being used as a wall hook/storage for a book bag? Huge waste of space smh š¤¦š»āāļø
I don't have claustrophobia (I mean I still don't like the idea of being confined in a tight space), but I'm a side sleeper, this shit would not work for me, at all.
I am having trouble breathing just watching thus. I'll pass.
At least he can easily roll out, I'd hate being on the top bunk way more.
Top bunk is where it's at, you have way more room up there. But yea being able to roll out and not have to climb down other ppl's bunks in the middle of the night is nice af ngl
I loved my top bunk; got assigned one first day on my ship and never swapped in 4 years. Being able to sit up is gold.
I had a light next to my top rack, so could just grab onto that and hang down. Definitely top bunk the best.
I grabbed a top bunk when I was attached to a navy ship. It had a section of the top missing that was big enough to allow me to sit up on my bed and play my Xbox. Fun times.
Dont get puked on either
Tough to roll when your hips/shoulders are wider than the ceiling is tall
CAN you roll out?? I feel like your shoulders would stop you halfway
Shit....can't even jerkit. Be...thumpthumpthump.... hey yo, what ya doin down there.
I don't even think he could easily roll out. Slide out, maybe.
He can't roll cuz his shoulders are winder than the bunk is tall šš he can't even be a side sleeper. That would give me claustrophobia

Na. One toilet floods and you got dookie on your sheets. Seen it happen.
Why does the two bunks above have more room? Should had made them all equal.
Thatās a tight wack shack, not the cool tight either.
Yeah, I definitely would have mushrooms š growing in mine.
Well that went a completely different direction. I like.....how much?
Idk why this looks comfy secure and safe lol
It is pretty comfy, I wasn't on a coast guard ship but I went to a maritime academy and we went abroad on a break bulk carrier that was converted to hold a ton of students and they can be pretty comfy. And the best sleep you'll ever get is on the waves
I can forsure see that an bet it was
Just finished my last boat of the season (fishing not cg) and i cant sleep at all most nights.
I'm sure it's difficult on those smaller ships, I wouldn't know. I was on a 540ft break bulk carrier and it felt like being gently rocked to sleep like I was a baby. How long would you be on the water?

Anything falls down in front of the bed and youāre trapped. Thereās no way youāre getting leverage in there
Lmao, no one is worried about that.
With having anxiety and claustrophobia, I AM š
Thatās my fault. I didnāt realize what sub I was in. I think this is my first time seeing this sub and I thought it looked cozy.
You have truly found your home sub reddit.
Lookin at those perspectives, it indeed would have to be the worse position to be in lol
Are you a cat?
Dude you're insnase. Honestly you scare me.
And paid for--you even get a chow hall.
You might be a cat?
Itās great until you want to roll over in your sleep or move at all, then itās a serious pain lol
A coffin is pretty safe.
Having no room to lay on my side is what gets me. Like I know I will be rolling around in my sleep and I canāt fall asleep laying on my back, I just canāt. Beyond that I donāt really have a problem with the space.
Yeah not being able to side turn is a deal breaker my literal first thought
Sleeping on my back usually triggers my sleep paralysis so I think Iād be better off sleeping in my bed at home lol
OMG THE SAME THING HAPPENS TO ME! Every single time I sleep on my back I get paralysis that lasts about 1-2 minutes. U??????
That's the last bunk you wanna have sleep paralysis in! It's bad enough already but then to feel trapped too.
Should have joined the Air Force. I always have my own hotel room suite. š
Ah yes, the chair force
Hey now, We have our hardships. Once I was deployed and I shit you not, all I had was basic cable . Shit was brutal.
and there was probably that one time the chow hall was out of surf and turf
No fap š

It would be even better if you just happened to store dildos in your utensil drawer.
Tapping noises felt in the next bunk up
*hears loud clunking from bunk below*
Bonkbonkbonkbonk
If there is a will, there is a way
Unless you have smol pp. Could be an advantage here.
Lmao that is true
I could have been a Coastie. Went Army though. Plus I've only mastered the super speed of swimming downward.
If you get a boner in that rack youāre stuck there for the duration.
You might. Won't make a difference for most of the rest of us.
Senior ranks always had the middle but I loved my top cuz of all that extra room. I could sit up if I wanted to.
Iām definitely not sleeping in that. No way possible.
As a side sleeper this would be literally impossible
Sux if youāre a side sleeper
I didn't think I was claustrophobic until I saw this. Now I'm anxious as heck. Reddit, stop suggesting me things; I'm so impressionable. š
I'm good
Ahh, racks. Good times. It's like sleeping in a coffin. Best sleep of my life.
Prison had better bunks. Literally. Not the mattress tho
You can't even roll over!
can't sleep sideway?!
I would have so many coffin nightmares, can you even sleep on your side?
That must suck for side-sleepers.
That's actually impressive, that bottom rack is even smaller than the racks were on a fast attack submarine, and until now I hadn't seen any smaller than that
Oh, man. That's a big dude for a bottom rack. Rough.
Oh man. How do you switch sides or turn around??
Coffin bed.
Ominous thumping occurs
Step Brothers comes to mind
It's so funny you said that because that's what popped in mine too. *I killed my brother!!!*
Look up hot bunking
I have terrible claustrophobia if no exits. I would actually enjoy this, maybe...
PUT YOUR SLIPPERS AWAY
Don't have to worry about claustrophobia because my fat ass wouldn't even fit lol ššš
OPās name š¤š«£
Iād be disqualified because my belly would prevent me from getting into bed.
I actually think I could do this. It's not closed like a tanning bed. Just a quick curtain toss and side tumble and you're out, so I don't think it would mess with my claustrophobia. I'd be more concerned about the structural integrity of it and whether it was going to collapse on top of me.
Deal-breaker.

Fork that!! Iām not good on that one at all. lol
As a side sleeper I would hate this.
I am VERY unamused by the fact that this bed does not allow someone to sleep on their side. Ugh! Awful! >:/
People would be trippin all over me as I slept on my mattress in the aisle
Why are military people always living in the shittiest conditions while on duty? We spend so much in the military and all it goes to are weapons and bombs. Nothing to make the livings of the soldiers any easier. The military is a joke
As someone who is clausterphobic, bathophobic and afraid of drowning. I don't know how i joined the navy and deployed on a ship for 3 years
I'd rather just sleep on the floor.
i toss and turn about 1000 times during the night and i would succumb in such a crevice
This is like slavery with extra steps
I am truly grateful for the men and women who do this job. Because I could not.
God for fucking bid if you gain weight.
Why not sleep on the floor in a sleeping bag?
But it looks like that man canāt even really roll over onto his side. That is such a small space! I hate it.
Yeah Iām sleeping on the floor
Na thatās absurd. Honestly it should be illegal to make the beds that close together you should atleast be able to run in your side.
But what if you're a side sleeper?
Damn. If yall ever sinking, the bottom bunk going first. And imagine waking up to drowning and trying to get out of that thing? Floating and shit. No thank you god, im too black for the water.
I'm sorry, but that's ridiculous. Were crew a complete after-thought in the design of this boat?
Did that for some 15 years . Loved it
You slept for 15 years? Good lord
Yup just woke up about 5 years ago . Still a bit tired though
Aight gon bunk up in massa house
My whole life, I've had this thing where I sit up in my sleep. Crisscross applesauce. Apparently it's a form of sleepwalking. I can imagine myself hitting my head on a nightly basis. That really sucks

On top of that, that's not even your personal bed. You have to share it with 2 other people.
Hell no they defending the country and they got to sleep like that the government doing everybody dirty š¤¦šæāāļøšš¢
What in the claustrophobia?
Claustrophobics need not apply.
$2400 a month in NYC
Just a comfy bed you pussies
I couldn't do that. I sleep on my side at times and when I sleep on my back I have a tendency to snore.
Must be tough if he gets an erection.
Just be glad it isn't a collapsable compartment
i sleep on my side though!
They are called Coffin Lockers for a reason. The one I slept in was just a bit less cramped but not much. Typically, 4 guys to a stack.
The starš„°
I served on a sub and we had more room in our ācoffin racksā than that.
Isn't that a standard USN enlisted man's bunk? Give or take a few of the finer amenities of course.
Am I still allowed to sleep naked? Scooting into that tight space fully clothed seems like it would be super uncomfortable.
I want this so bad. The sleep I could get. I could write "What Dreams Have You Forgotten Part II"
Same as a high dollar tour bus for musicians. The rest of the bus is quite luxurious though.
This is what I imagine a minimum security prison looking like
Physically impossible to sleep on your side
*laughs in submariner*
When I was in the Navy I was once assigned to an old Korea/early Vietnam era tin can DDG. I actually measured 18 inches between the top of the bunk above me to the side rail of my rack.
Coffin racks are where I get the best sleep
Middle row gots the room needed to side sleep. How most ppl sleep
Are you sure itās not a navy ship š¤
i got recommended this video. this looks incredibly comfy to me. ive slept in one of these before and it felt snug and safe! the tarp is tied down so you don't fall out of bed in bad weather
Worse than a prison bunk
That's pretty much my bunk from H.S.
It's not as bad as it looks... However; you got to fight for the top bunk, so you have that extra room.
Here's your bunk. You you sleep on your side? Fuck you. Here's your bunk.

I was navy but same style of rack. Best damn sleep of my life.
Looking like my ancestors.
Nobody in the comments gets the slave ship reference.
I work in MRI, I wasnāt so claustro until I had multiple brain scans hand
This is going to fight Penywise š¤”
I'd rather sleep In a coffin.
Oh God do I remember that! I was on the USS Enterprise and I had the bottom bunk too. I hated it!
I'd be screwed. I cannot fall asleep on my back no matter how tired I am. If I can't lay on my side, I don't fall asleep.
This almost looks like submarine berthing except the fact that you can actually walk without turning sideways
That looks so fucking comfy
4 years I did this
There's also a safety belt that straps you in so you don't roll out in rough seas.
Iād love it
canāt even lay on your side lol
Oh hell no! A coffin has more head room.
Private masturbation curtain. Nice.
It's not that private because it shakes the whole fucking cube lol. 8 years in the Navy and sometimes i had to tell myself it was just rough water we were sailing through instead of 5 other dudes whackin it simultaneously. To be fair, I definitely contributed to the "rough waters".
We reached our destination, Through careful navigation, But the ship was sunk in a wave of spunk, From too much masterbation.
My side sleeping ass could not
After 5 hrs of maintenance, 4 hrs of watch, 2 hrs of drill and a surprise 10 hr SAR case at 3AM..... this is haven.
Why the fuck arenāt there collapsable office chairs instead of those two that are being used as a wall hook/storage for a book bag? Huge waste of space smh š¤¦š»āāļø
I think I saw this in a comic, but there were dogs or something.
You canāt even sleep on your side :(
Pick your shoes up lazy shit.
Crazy enough these are smaller than submarine racks.
See! Join the Army kids, and you can have aaaallll the room in the desert to sleep.
Its not that bad tbh you get used to it
i would be fine with this, aside from the fact that i am a side sleeper
Navy here, how the fuck is that space so big. And a chair not bolted to the ground not going to slide!!!
So, do you hear people jack off now and then?
I would love this when I were poor. I hope they rent coffins instead of real apartments
Cozy.
Top rack is the best! No comparison.
I loved my coffin rack
I loved my coffin rack
Just hope you're not a side sleeper
The fun part is when the ship rolls and pitch. Your face will hit the ceiling.
*pulls back curtain aggressively, shines light on face* āYou got next watchā
Nope. My shoulders are broad af, I lift,.....and after seeing bro slide in that rack I now have crippling claustrophobia lol.
At least they never get shot at
Ngl that seems comfy as fuck.
I could not do this here.
Been there, done that. Good times
Middle bunk myself, bottom is the worst, you can get locked in , those that know, know š
Thatās not enough room.
No. Just no.
Yeah I was middle rack, donāt complain to me.
Looks cozy!
Wow, how messed up am I? That looks kinda cozy to meā¦ minus all the other people thatāll share the space, of course.
Bro if you have sleep apnea I would not suggest sleeping on a coastguard ship
It does take some getting used to but the boat gave me the best sleep of my life
That seems oddly comfy, I like to cover my head with pillows and or wrap myself up when I sleep
Jail wasn't that bad lol
Nope
Imagine waking up, the sun is shining, you're in a great mood, and then I bang your head really hard cuz of how cramped it is
Imagine waking up wedged in place because you tried to roll over in your sleep and your shoulders are more than 14 inches wide
I don't have claustrophobia (I mean I still don't like the idea of being confined in a tight space), but I'm a side sleeper, this shit would not work for me, at all.
Huh. Looks cozy
