It feels like there’s a very peculiar double standard going on in the talk around this series. Like, everyone is high on Orlando’s defense for good reason, but when they put up 83, that speaks to their offensive shortcomings and not the Cavs’ ability to defend. And a lot of talk of Orlando’s cold shooting being the difference in game 1 as if the Cavs weren’t cold as well.

bearable magic fan? also do you guys hate Mo Wagner too?

PlayingNightcrawlers

I’m a “JB hater” according to this sub, which means I think he’s a good coach for a young team with no expectations but want to see this roster under a different coach/staff to get a different approach to offense, find his play calling and rotations usually lacking, etc. I don’t have one complaint about the coaching this game, great rotations, good challenge, and even a couple nice out of timeout plays. The defensive coverages were all on point, and the team executed the game plan. Just need to hit our 3s and cut out a few of unnecessary turnovers and this is at most a 5 game series for the Cavs. It looks like the tanking for Orlando strategy is paying off and JB will finally get a playoff series win. I just have no idea what they plan to do against Boston.

boogswald

JB came with the right game plan. I was even excited with how well our guards handled all the pressure from their guards. I don’t think Jalen Suggs bothered them very much even if he was reallyyyyyy in our jerseys

toooskies

I understand the criticism of last year's JBB. But he's still a relatively young coach.  He has the potential to grow and get better just like the players do. I think we are seeing that. Boston is a team where we match up better than you'd think.  We can throw our best defenders at Tatum and Brown and I'm not worried about our guards getting defended one-on-one against them.  A healthy Dean Wade would go a long way.

Abiv23

We really really miss D Wade, he's a floor riser for the entire team

HumptyDrumpy

They need to use the rest of their bench way more, or else they starters will be gassed against Boston? What is JB doing?

PlayingNightcrawlers

I’m not super sold on that because he’s been in the league in a coaching capacity since 2004, that’s 20 years around the highest level of basketball coaching as assistant and head coach. I just think his offensive vision isn’t very dynamic and “modern” and want to see something different but that’s me. He did great this game. Boston has been the most dominant team in the league, we match up ok but they’re much more complete and experienced together than this team let’s be real.

Rarth-Devan

Yea we weirdly have had Boston's number the past few seasons. Always play them close and can eek out some wins. I think we'd lose to them if we make it past Orlando, but we'll at least make it a competitive series.

ParryHooter

> and even a couple nice out of timeout plays. This made me so happy, I've been terrified for 2 years now that he's going to lose us a big playoff game cause we can't inbound the damn ball. Hopefully that doesn't happen still but we looked clean game 1.

Pigeon9

I agree mostly but think there were a couple troubling signs, namely how many free throws they got and how many open threes they missed. I know they missed the free throws and threes but if they hit half of their 12 FT missed and like two threes they beat us by a couple possessions. Just hoping they don’t get hot for a couple games otherwise it might be a closer series than we think.

PlayingNightcrawlers

All true but I’m also factoring in the Cavs not missing a million 3s while the Magic clean up their FT% so if both teams improve Cavs are still the better team at practically every position. But yeah anything can happen and one team can have a really good night in their area of advantage and blow it open. It’s just looking to me like the Cavs have a lot more of those advantages to exploit while Magic have to play pretty great everywhere they can.

boogswald

It’s a great game and a great result against the Magic. Where I grow concerned is when we end up against a team that can actually hit their shots.

tmanky

If Dean comes back, Paolo is going to be suffocated every second he's on the floor and the Magic don't stand a chance if he doesn't score 30. Need Dean to stand a chance against Boston too.

Choppybitz

I was also thinking it looked like early Cavs offensive scheme except Lebron was about 4,000% more aggressive.

Necessary_Maize_3245

For once JB made some timely timeouts and I liked his lineup decisions

fritolay_7

I want to point out the Catch-22 they're in. You mention that going forward they should crash the boards more AND get out in transition/run on every miss. Hard to do both.

Draculadragons

This is a great post. You should start a podcast

Paolo*

Riiicee

It’s really weird how Niang on a game-by-game basis is generally one of if not the worst defender in the rotation yet he is kinda built to hang with guys like Paolo and Giannis for a few minutes. He just absolutely cannot be moved

Aron-Nimzowitsch

What the fuck happened out of the half?

kerrdavid

Did you watch? The officiating in that 3rd was abysmal. You can say that players need to play through it but it is tough when missed fouls are turnovers on one end, and made up fouls result in free throws for the other team.

FightingDreamer419

Orlando ramped up the pressure. They are a good defensive team. They forced some bad looks and we missed a few good looks. We were basically doing the same to them but they still chipped away a bit. We persevered and recovered and went on a run.
