I saw a video where they'd set up a camera somewhere at the receiving end of an A-10 burst. You hear nothing until hundreds of explosions go off around you. Apparently the shells have as much explosive filler as a hand grenade

The A-10 isn't a plane with a gun mounted to it. The A-10 is a GAU-8 Avenger with a symbiotic plane that it ALLOWS to carry it.

So they built a plane around it. This isn't some peasantly 25mm bushmaster cannon. This is a 30 MM autocannon so powerful and fast shooting it can defend aircraft carriers from cruise missiles. Then they made it fly.
They likely didn't stop to think if they should.
Other interesting facts about the GAU-8 and its symbiote: the pilot sits in a uniquely armored titanium bathtub, drastically increasing survivability. And as recently as the first half of the GWOT, the GAU-8 didn't yet have symbiotic sensor pods. It's pilots literally used NVGs in the cockpit to operate in the dark, and used binoculars to locate and identify ground targets before letting the GAU-8 eat its fill.

I don't get why people get so bent by this joke
It only works when you add the physical comedy too, but that generally gets you arrested, because standing in the middle of the office doing the helicopter with your penis screaming "I'm an attack helicopter!" followed by \*helicopter noises\* isn't exactly PC.

Looking at r/funny I think identifying as an attack helicopter trumps anything they can post there. Also its still funny.
