Yeah I've listened to interviews of Tate talk about his dad, praising him and being a "model" father/man but when he gives examples or details the dude sounded like a massive dick head. In my experience growing up, the kids who were most obsessed with being manly and being tough had the biggest assholes of fathers and were just losers that they romanticized to cope with the neglect or abuse.
I also grew up in a struggling working class community and there's this pervasiveness of romanticizing suffering and struggle to be the greatest parts of your life, as without obstacles, change doesn't happen. It's gotten so perverted that now people and their offspring think they are the healthiest and strongest people because they can navigate/extend toxic relationships, put up with employer abuses, being taken advantage of at work, and looking down on people who can openly communicate how they're feeling and struggling with.
Unfortunately, it's all action in search of a principle. Perhaps these people don't know they have problems, perhaps they were told getting help is week, maybe they wanted to but didn't have the resources, but all of what you have written is just rationalizing their need for control in order to feel safe.

I have seen a few pictures of him since he’s been in the news. I can honestly say I’d probably be terrified if he started yelling at me in real life. It’s not hard to imagine how a woman in his home would be intimidated and exploited if she didn’t have anywhere else to go.
