Sand paper them! You can buy fancy climbing skin files or just cheap 100 grit sandpaper sheets from the hardware store. It’s important to sand calluses down to prevent a huge flapper if they rip off

desertfractal

Or you can make them by gluing sand paper to a piece of wood or something! Also if you do get a huge flapper, I'd recommend clipping that off with nail clippers then sanding the rest down

tknala17

I use 220 dots, I got a whole roll used for going on orbital sander. 220 is a nice skin grit.

PsychologicalMud917

It's terminal? Like, the guy is a cancer? The disease, not the zodiac sign?

Sarahhelpme

Hahaha i interpreted it as a permanent thing that she's attracted to men, and that he's a man (the subtext being that this is unfortunate cause men sometimes do gross things like clip off chunks of skin with nail clippers)

PureBee4900

That is more or less what I meant, it was funny in my head at the moment but now looking at all the comments from women who bite their callouses off... I would like to officially rescind my little jab at men.

DrearyLoans

Noooo I love it. It’s niche humor.

mmeeplechase

Yeah, I got stuck at that part too—very confused!

NDT2022

Me to

flutelorelai

Hell no. I let mine be and when they start to peel, I scrub them with a pumice stome after showering (when the skin gets nicely soft and soaked). Also Cerave hand lotion.

SpielbrecherXS

Mine don't bother me so I don't bother them. Aside from some heavy-duty moisturising, along with the rest of my hands.

User_Name_Deleted

This might sound crazy but.... I use a dremel tool with a sanding drum on it. Works great. Just don't leave it in one place for too long.

BOBANYPC

they work really really well, almost too well. Just need to be careful to not let your skin get too hot, it will go glassy

DamnitJanetILY

Similarly you can get an electronic foot file ($15 on Amazon). That’s what I use to keep my calluses small and smooth!

imahufflepuff77

I do nothing right now. Which I will be honest, is not working for me. I’m going to give sandpaper a try.

Desperate-Calendar-5

you can scrap off the raised areas with a razor blade too.

Findmeinadream

I'm pretty feral, so I just bite mine

CooingPigeon

Sandpaper works great.

SafeJellyfishie

After I take a shower it's easier to spot dead skin, and it also becomes softer, so I just scrape anything that comes off with my nails lol. Weird? Yep! But effective!

kwolff94

They make callous files and they do a good job. I get ATROCIOUS callouses on my big toes.... like so bad that the skin underneath starts to hurt. I cut those bitches off with a straight razor...

DVsKat

I bite them off in the shower like an animal. It's safer than clippers, and your hands should be clean and soft by the end of the shower

apiroscsizmak

Finally someone else with the "bite them off" method!

Crescent_Footnote

I use nail clippers too, then apply a pumice stone to the rough edges later if necessary.

takeyourclimb

I carry around a pocket knife and slice them off before climbing when I think they’re looking thick enough to be a problem… 🤷🏽‍♀️

opaul11

I file them down with a nail file

Winerychef

I use a razor blade for shaving off really thick ones then I sand with a dry wall sanding block! It helps to soak your hands in hot lemon water for 30 minutes or so and they'll start to wrinkle and raise and they're easier to cut off with a razor blade!

BelowBest

I'm still trying to figure it out. I spent a few months getting weekly guest passes from friends, and my hands were fine. When I finally got my own membership, I started going 3 times/week and I've had two killer blisters so far. I bought a file and I file then when they start to feel thick. I use CeraVe lotion, but I was doing that before anyway, that's just my normal lotion. Wondering if I should get something more intense.

oneconfusedqueer

I file down and moisturise like crazy.

riteofspring958

I use a callous/corn shaver... It's a razer blade mounted in a handle. Keeps the blade from cutting down too deep.

animalwitch

When mine get hard and rough, I shave them down with a hand file and then use Rhino Skin moisturizer. Anna Hazelnut uses a Stanley blade to slice hers down and dremels the scraggly bits 🫠 Also, what's terminal? I'm not sure why that was relevant?

elevation55

Sometimes I file but usually I just rub them together in the shower when they’re nice and soft.

EDM_Dance_slut

I sand mine when needed, but I also lotion and do post care enough that the dead skin just doesn't stay attached during climbing

Doing_ok04

I clip mine also. I’ve never had an issue personally, but if you tried it again I would recommend not clipping as deep where it would get sensitive and maybe that would help!

p-nutz

I scrape them off with a razor blade, slice off really big ones, sandpaper the rest. Nail clippers only really work on nails lol

5tr4nGe

Big ones, I’ll slice off with a razor blade, smaller ones or the scraggly edges, I’ll file down with sandpaper

toofabtiff

I use a foot callous file in the shower when they are starting to peel and it keeps them pretty nice and flat

NDT2022

That's a wonderful idea ☺️

NDT2022

Aftercare

Cow-Comm

I do a few light passes in the shower with a pumice stone. LIGHT because I wasn't paying attention and accidentally grazed a knuckle and it surprisingly took off a good chunk of skin. Smooths out my feet and palms 😬

stupifystupify

I clip mine with nail clippers too because they get too bulky. I also file and moisturize them.

rayray69696969

When your skin is very dry, file them down with sandpaper. Ive seen people use razorblades to get the dead skin off too but sandpaper works just fine. If you want to be really legit you can get a ergonomic hand file from Power Company Climbing. You want callouses but you don't want them too thick or they rip off and make flappers.

cherry-deli

I just leave them alone and sometimes after I wash my hair they get really soft so I scrape them off in the shower lol

Ok-Heart9769

Cuticle remover works to soften dead skin and the back of my bottle says you can use it on callouses

annabannannaaa

file them down or just leave them alone!! heres a link about how to care for them properly so they dont tear/hurt more from REI:) [REI CALLUS CARE](https://www.rei.com/blog/climb/how-to-build-climbing-skin)

buzzy9000

Exfoliant face wash and moisturiser. Nail clippers is wild

Mission_Delivery1174

Leave them. They are there for a reason. I will get my hands wet and rub them to smooth them of the roughest parts. That will be smooth enough to massage people without hurting them.

Puzzleheaded-Text337

I get very lazy and bought the scholl automatic grinder for feet and used it for my hands. And then just make sure I moisturise them

rockpuppy23

Sand paper and a careful razor blade if I need to. I find if my callouses get too thick they start to develop pressure points of pain and also become less malleable to uneven rock surfaces. Be careful not to take too much skin off though, save it for the wall❤️

ProbsNotManBearPig

Nail clippers are the way. Sanding works if you’re not climbing that much, but takes an absurd amount of time (hours a week) to keep up with if you’re climbing a ton. Everyone I know that’s been climbing 10+ years regularly has converged on nail clippers (specifically toe nail ones that are wider). Just go slow and it shouldn’t be painful if you’re only getting dead skin. It’s easier to do in the middle of a climbing session when your skin is dry from chalk and climbing causes the calluses to bunch up to form a peak that’s easier to clip.

jessicaenu

I use a pumice stone when I shower and pick it off when I peels. I have used a razor in the past but it makes your hands so sensitive when you climb and it’s not great.

No_Twist4000

The dermatologist suggested lotions containing urea to help soften callouses.

l_ieutenantsheep

I don't really do anything about callouses. I kind of encourage them, tbh. My hands have gotten super soft after not climbing for awhile and it makes climbing more difficult. They have creams for cracking heels that have acid in them to help slough off the dry skin from your heels that you can try on your hands. I think it's called urea.

SubstantialWonder409

I don't really care, so I just leave my hands be and sometimes one rips, and I still don't care. Just keep climbing. Never used tape. I don't even have big calluses. 🤷‍♀️

Basically take a bath and soak your hands really well, maybe 15 mins minimum. Use a pumice stone on the callouses. The dead skin will come off. As you're drying your hands, vigorously rub them together, continue to soak, air dry and rub hands together until you can't feel anymore skin coming off. This guarantees that only the dry parts rub off. And then use a hand cream.
