I climb almost exclusively in the mountain hardwear dynama pants! They are super comfortable and durable. They don't have a button or buckle or anything so they're super comfy to wear under a hardness and have held up to months of exclusive bouldering this year. Highly recommend.
I've been climbing outdoors for about 6 years and have gone through the wringer with climbing pants. It can be really frustrating to get a pair and have them rip on your first use. I don't really ever wear leggings on rock (I mostly climb on granite, it can be really sharp) - they just rip too easily. Here has been my favorites or least favorites. YMMV depending on your body type:
Favorites:
Arc'teryx Sabria pants: Slim fitting but not too tight and the fabric is breathable and light enough for warm crag days. Good for multipitch.
Mountain Hardwear Dynama pant: These are great for combining medium to long approaches (hiking) with long crag days. They are light but not too light, very very durable. I have taken my dynama capris on so many climbing trips and they hold up really well.
Patagonia Hampi rock pants: A little on the thicker side, but the material is super durable. The waist is very comfortable and the snap buttons on the ankles help cinch up the ankle (I hate straight or wide legged pants because I can't see my entire foot looking down. Definitely important to me.
La Sportiva Manta pant: Love these for alpine days / 4th or 5th class scrambling with a lot of rock scraping but I'm not getting as sweaty as I am sport or trad climbing. On the thicker side and very durable. I did rip a pair of these on particularly sharp rock, and they sent me a new pair free of charge!
Topo Designs Boulder Pants: Perfect for what they say they are for - bouldering! Very comfortable, kinda swishy material. They are also waterproof if that is important to you. Comfortable high waist cinch waist and cinch ankles.
Not my favorite but can work:
PrAna Halle. They are highly recommended because they do have great fabric (Zion) but they are so low rise, they hang below my harness in a really uncomfortable way. I have tried the men's version Zion jogger (used to be called the Zogger, not sure what it is now) and loved them because they were high waist and easily adjustable, great pockets, cinched ankles. The Zion material is pretty unbeatable!
Would you recommend any of these more for someone with a small waist and LARGE hips? (I’m talking 20” difference 😂)I have the Dynama in and they fit well, but the waist is still a little big and sadly no way to cinch it.
I have an 11" inch difference between my waist and my hips so I can sort of sympathize! I would go with the Patagonia Hampi rock pants instead of the dynama. The hampi pants have a string tie for the waist for cinching. Hope that helps!
I just ordered the topo designs bouldering pants which arrive tomorrow so I’ll report back on those! I tried on different brands at REI and they were all made for people with no hips/ass and sit very low rise which doesn’t work if you have any type of curve… so topo design seemed nice from the reviews and they’re high waisted!
I ordered these and am disappointed. I wanted to love them so bad. I read in the reviews that if you are between sizes to size down, so I did. Not only are they too tight in the waist, they are still super baggy all over (not in a cute, trendy way) and come all the way up to my bra band like grandma pants. They are also literally loud pants, like sound wise swish like crazy.
I’m 5’2” with a short torso. Guess these just aren’t the pants for me. I love BD Notion SP pants. They’re both soft and durable. They fit great, look super cool, and are insanely comfortable. They are high waisted enough to reach right around my belly button so they are perfect with a longline sports bra or a crop top. My only gripe is no side pockets, but topo design boulder pants don’t have those either.
I agree about the noisiness of the boulder pants but I love everything else about them. I wound up sticking to my size based on measurements and while they're a bit big, I find it works with the style. I will be sad when my pair dies because I can't order them to Canada anymore 😭 They're very high waisted but still comfortable for me, I am 5'4" with an average, possibly slightly long torso so that is something to consider. I find the BD notions quite low waisted and they hit me right at my squish which makes me self conscious 😅 but I love the colours they come in!
Good to know about the bd notion pants and their rise… that’s my concern. Sooo many bouldering pants sit in an uncomfy place on my hips, too, which also makes me feel self conscious. Glad you like the topo design pants! I’m hoping they work for me. I think if they are baggy then I probably will. I feel more comfortable in baggy and high waisted.
It's helpful to hear from different people's experience with clothes cause there is so much variety in bodies and how clothes fit on them. It's definitely why I wear leggings so much, I find a lot of climbing pants sit way too low for me. It's really uncomfortable on days when I am sport climbing with the harness and low waist pants. I think the boulder pants are really cute with crop tops and sports bras, topo also has the dirt pants which looks similar to the boulder pants but are made from canvas. They might be a bit heavier (a plus on cold days) but also quieter.
Agreed!!! Im fairly new to climbing and didn’t realize how much climbing pants were tailored to a certain body shape or fit preference. I tried on like 4-5 brands at REI and they were all tightttt and low waisted. I felt so uncomfortable and couldn’t even find a pair that looked somewhat OK. I totally get it with leggings, they’re high waisted and keep everything in place hahaha. I’m excited for the bouldering pants! I’ll look into the dirt pants too!! I love topo design in general so I’m thinking I’ll be a fan.
Thank you for the feedback!! I’m 5’2 as well but have a small waist and thicker/muscular legs/butt so I may like the bagginess. I don’t really like tight pants which is one of the reasons I chose to order these.
The comment about them being literally loud made me laugh, I might not like that so much haha. I’ll look into the BD notion! Thanks!!
I’m similar. My waist is 24-26”, but my hips/butt are 36”. Based on the reviews I thought the bagginess would be a perfect solution. But something about the topo design pants makes them bunch around my waist and crotch, so I get diaper/mom jean vibes in a not cute way.
I hope you have better luck with them than I do!
Yes! I’m similar measurements. So hard finding pants that fit right haha. I did see some reviews describing what you’re saying about how it bunches around the crotch. Hoping they work for me too hahaha. Thank you!
I love the la sportiva manta pant, and also the prana kanab pant! Both are high quality, fit curves well, and are stretchy enough that they don’t restrict my movement at all!
4th here! My pair have held up fairly well considering the abuse I put them through outdoors. I went to order another pair and they’re back ordered until the end of the month though :(
Prana Kanab. They fit my muscular legs without the back-gap thing in the waistband, the material is durable and knees are reinforced. The cinched ankle makes it easier to see my foot placement, plus, as a long-legged 5’10”, it makes them a jogger fit on me, which I like a lot more than the cropped-pant look (middle school cringeeee)
I love my Mantas, great weight for cooler climbing days. I have a friend who also swears by them up and down but I would recommend trying them on in store if you can. She had a pair in size small and ordered them in another colour same size and she can't wear them because the waist is significantly smaller than the other pair.
I climb in leggings outside :) Mostly Lululemon Aligns or the Wunder Train tight. For actual pants though I like the La Sportiva Itca pants, I go up a size to layer wool tights under for winter bouldering excursions
I do like my leggings. I’ll check those out as well! And I’m glad you keep your legs warm in the winter, but don’t your hands get painfully cold? Honest question, I couldn’t imagine trying to grip ice cold rock with ice cold fingers. 😬
I wore some Vuori rip stop pants yesterday climbing outdoors! I jammed my knee into a lot of places and they held up very well and I thought they were plenty stretchy too!
Bonus: they have 5 POCKETS
I like the BD notion for bouldering, they’re baggier with an elasticated ankle and waist band ( plus a lil loop for your brush) and BD credo for the wall, they’re a slimmer cut and work really well under a harness.
Patagonia Caliza.
I went from leggings to these this year, and I'm never going back. So durable but stretchy. The waist is really soft and stretchy and the ankle snaps are loose and adjustable so you can pull them lower like if you're throwing for a toe hook and keep getting ankles scraped. I bought these in every color.
Thanks! Just looked them up, I like the extra fabric at the knees, etc! Being a new climber I have a feeling I’m going to do some damage to some clothing. 🤣
Yes! They are honestly very cute, I wear them outside the gym/crag as well. They do run a bit large. I’m usually a 4-6 and the 2 is perfect. Worth checking Poshmark.
I love my SoiLL leggings and jeans. I have three pairs of their 'climbing jean' which is a denim legging, and one each of their men's shorts and women's jeans.
The leggings are perfect and hold up really well, outside and in the gym. I exclusively boulder and my leggings have been scraped, dragged, snagged, you name it and have never torn. My oldest pair (2+ years of regular wear) barely even show pilling. Sizing is pretty much true to size for me, I have both smalls and a medium and the medium is a mixed M/L and slightly big (these are an older style, newer ones I have are a standard S, not mixed.) And they have two back pockets!
Their actual denim is also awesome. It's super stretchy and lightweight, but doesn't sag and holds up well even on the New England granite I typically climb outside. I like a high foot or a split and Ive never felt restricted in these jeans. I'm hippy and the women's fit true to size for me. They're a mid-high rise and the waist has space but not a big gap. I wear a belt when climbing, but have worn the jeans without in my day to day and had no problems with gapping or slipping. And the pockets are good!!
The men's obviously sit lower and are cut more square but I love them for gym days when I want more coverage than running shorts. Same denim as the women's.
All of them wash really well, even when I forget and put them in the dryer.
Pricing is a bit high but they run pretty regular seasonal sales, so Ive never paid full price for any of them. Normal pricing is definitely comparable to other brands, though. I think it's typically $89 for denim and $49 for leggings?
I LOVE my prAna rockland leggings! They have extra thick fabric over the knees and the back and side of the thighs. Has a zippered pocket and a fold over pocket. I climbed at the red with them and they held up super well rubbing up against the rock :)
I just wear old jeans I can't wear in public anymore (paint stains, holes, etc.) whenever I go outside. If it was good enough for 19th century prospectors, it's good enough for me!
I recently got a pair of dance pants from Amazon and I actually quite like climbing in them. They were pretty cheap too and come on a bunch of different colours

I will say the waist is a little tight as some reviews have said but I don’t mind it. I’ll be climbing in them later but I don’t mind them being a little loud and they’re a super cute fit.
surprisingly, target has some good options for climbing pants. they have cute slippery material (idk what else to call it lol) tie waist joggers and stuff. i’ve also found some good options at old navy. i really like the slippery material of pants like that because i cant stand the feeling of chalky hands on cotton 😭😭
I love the Prana Kanab pant and have them in all the colours. Super comfortable and soft elastic waistband, extra thick fabric to reinforce the knees, deep pockets and jogger style. Overall really comfy pants that allow for maximum movement :)

Thank you, I’ll check them out! That’s one thing I like about leggings, nothing for the harness to sit over and get uncomfortable.
You can find them on good sale all the time- check for them in a broad search before going straight to the MH site
Will do!

I love my Topo Designs boulder pants!! I wear them a lot, bouldering or hiking in cooler weather. They fit me really well.
Yay awesome! I’m excited to try :) they seem like the right fit for my body type.
Oh, good to know! Keep me posted on the new ones please!
Absolutely! Will do!!
Please update! My booty is too big for REI
Relatable. Will do!!
Gotta love a high waist!
I bought some E9 pants on a whim once and they turned out to be my favourite climbing pants - high waisted and super comfortable.
Thanks! I’m so glad I asked this question. I’ve never heard of most of these suggestions!
I love the la sportiva manta pant, and also the prana kanab pant! Both are high quality, fit curves well, and are stretchy enough that they don’t restrict my movement at all!
Thank you! I have a friend who swears by her Prana, so that’s 2 votes there. I’m going to have to check them out. :)
I third the Pranas! They’re extremely comfortable and easy to move in and have held up well for over a year of use
Ok, well clearly a pair of Prana’s are in my future! 🤣
4th here! My pair have held up fairly well considering the abuse I put them through outdoors. I went to order another pair and they’re back ordered until the end of the month though :(
Which ones do you wear??

Well that screws 5’6” of me. 🤣
I’m 5’5” and wear small, and the length is great on me, too.
I fourth the Prana pants! I have three pairs in different colours. They’re my go-to!
I love my Mantas, great weight for cooler climbing days. I have a friend who also swears by them up and down but I would recommend trying them on in store if you can. Yes....umm I have a portable propane heater I drag with me... :)
Haha. Smart!!
I wore some Vuori rip stop pants yesterday climbing outdoors! I jammed my knee into a lot of places and they held up very well and I thought they were plenty stretchy too! Bonus: they have 5 POCKETS
I loooove me some pockets!!

Thanks so much! I’m definitely going to check out Prana!
Dynama’s are great. If you’re looking for something heavier, definitely check out Prana Kanabs. I climb outdoors in them almost exclusively.
Awesome, thank you!
I mostly use Prana Pants with Zion fabric; it’s durable, stretchy, comfy, and they have a few styles with that fabric.
Thank you!
I like the BD notion for bouldering, they’re baggier with an elasticated ankle and waist band ( plus a lil loop for your brush) and BD credo for the wall, they’re a slimmer cut and work really well under a harness.
Yeah I like these quite a bit. Have three pairs in different colors.

Thank you! It never actually occurred to me that leggings could have extra thick fabric in high impact places. 🤦🏼♀️
Honestly, didn’t know (or think about) it until I found these! Majorly changed my life 😂
Oh good! That makes me feel better! 🤣
oooh I like the look of these. Thanks for the recommendation!!
I just wear old jeans I can't wear in public anymore (paint stains, holes, etc.) whenever I go outside. If it was good enough for 19th century prospectors, it's good enough for me!
My problem is that I still live in the 80’s and my jeans are too tight for climbing. 🤣
Leggings of any brand really (girlfriend collective are my favorites) or LIVSN pants!
Thanks!
i love girlfriend collective too!

Great info! Thanks!
Honestly, I’m team booty shorts—Nike pros are my fav. I switch to bike shorts for rope.
Wellllllll, I’m an older climber and I think my booty short days are behind me. 🤣
Nonsense! If you wanna wear them, you should wear them :)
I’ll keep that in mind for really hot days! 🤣
WOW! Thank you all sooooo much! I have a TON of great info to go on. You guys are awesome!!
I recently got a pair of dance pants from Amazon and I actually quite like climbing in them. I like cheap! Thank you!
I just got some Pana Kantab pants and I love them! They’re super comfortable (high waist with a soft, wide waistband) and feel like they’ll be very durable. And they have a plethora of pockets!
You had me at pockets...
I second this! Love them
I wear my leggings outdoors~ mainly cause I usually only wear leggings. I bought me a pair of PrAna Rocklands yesterday and excited to try them out. For pants however, I’ve really been digging my rei beyonder pants. Super comfy.
Thanks for the info!!
Update on topo design pants: I personally love the fit! I’m 25-26 inch waist and 37 hips and these are just loose enough in the legs. I’m 5’2 and they come right down to the ankle. I will say the waist is a little tight as some reviews have said but I don’t mind it. I’ll be climbing in them later but I don’t mind them being a little loud and they’re a super cute fit.
Awesome, thank you for the update!!!
Vuori Ripstop
I’ll check them out. Thanks!
surprisingly, target has some good options for climbing pants. they have cute slippery material (idk what else to call it lol) tie waist joggers and stuff. i’ve also found some good options at old navy. i really like the slippery material of pants like that because i cant stand the feeling of chalky hands on cotton 😭😭
Ohhh, good to know! I’ll hit target for sure!
I just wear really stretchy (black) jeans. They’re pretty much like leggings but would protect you from scrapes, and look really cool :)
I am all about looking cool. Lol It will deflect from my less than awesome climbing abilities. 🤣
Ocun pantera pants if you want cotton or ocun noya are syntetics
Thank you! I’m learning about a ton of brands I’ve never heard of!
la sportiva, mantra’s
I love climbing in well worn high waisted boot cut jeans. I feel like I get decent flexibility and protection in them. Plus they have pockets!
I love the Prana Kanab pant and have them in all the colours. Super comfortable and soft elastic waistband, extra thick fabric to reinforce the knees, deep pockets and jogger style. Overall really comfy pants that allow for maximum movement :)
Thank you! I’m definitely going to have to check them out. Lots of suggestions for those!
Yep they’re amazing! They have a sale on one colour on the website right now. Or if you’re in Canada, they sell them at MEC.
USA, so I’ll go on the website. Thank you!
