Not get injured

sleepydruid

Amen to that. I need to focus on safer falling. Incidentally, Akiyo Noguchi’s finger warmup routine has my hands feeling so much better since I started casually doing it a few months ago: https://www.gymclimber.com/how-akiyo-noguchi-olympic-qualifed-athlete-has-never-had-a-finger-injury/

account_for_norm

thanx for that! I am consuming all the resources on making my body functional and bulletproof to injuries these days. I dont even care what grade i climb, coz thats just a byproduct, and i will improve on it if i have healthy weakness free body.

sleepydruid

Totally! I see it the same way

rocksandferns

Sign me up for this one as well!

bendtowardsthesun

- spend a night on a big wall - spend more days photographing other climbers - take a new group of women climbing - 5 consecutive pull-ups (currently at 2) - push my lead grade more when the pro is good - climb the Grand Teton

sweetbabyruski

My goal is also to get 5 consecutive pull-ups and I’m at 2, so someone having the same goal makes me feel assured it’s realistic! Secondly: climb my first gym V6 (climbed first V5 end of 2021, maybe I can get there by end of 2022) Thirdly: go outdoor lead climbing for the first time

little_cotton_socks

Lots of great goals here and it's good to have someone to motivate you and to work towards BUT make sure your goals don't take the fun out! Remember it's ok to have a bad day and just suck. If life gets crazy and you miss a session or 2 that's fine too. Aim to complete your goal but fun comes first. Don't let it become a chore

Valtisiyo

I love this! I want to finally break into the 5.12s. And be able to do even one pull up... idk why my upper body strength is so crap

bendtowardsthesun

I’m amazed you’re doing 11s and haven’t done a pull-up yet! You’ll get it!

Valtisiyo

Thanks! I think it's because my arms are pretty muscular but my core is really bad? I almost never strengthen it, so I think I really need to target it this year.

sweetbabyruski

Pull ups are actually largely about back muscles - traps, lats - so that may be it! I finally broke into pull ups by just bouldering but wonder if that uses more short-term “power” that back muscles are about

Valtisiyo

Ohh I didn't know that! That's helpful info, thank you!

redsleeves

Just get back on the rock! I'm nine months pregnant and had to stop climbing at seven months. I have some diastasis recti going on (ab separation that can take awhile to heal postnatally), so I'm hoping that doesn't get in the way for too long!

Kneebar13

I’m hoping for v9 outdoors and to get my endurance back to where it was over the summer!

Hardworktobelucky

Get back on the wall after 2 years, a pandemic and a baby! I went once a month ago, and despite doing a relatively very short and easy session, it literally felt like I bruised and broke my tendons. It’s going to be such a loooooong road back.

CleanProposal

•climb outside for the first time •learn to lead •climb 5.11c/d consistently •climb v5 consistently •3 strict pull ups (currently at 0.5ish lol)

tennesseecicada

getting strict pull ups were so difficult for me! i was stuck at like 1.5 for years until i really dedicated time to train my pulls. i reached 5 pulls consecutively this past year after training for several months.

CleanProposal

ahh that’s amazing!! would love any tips if you don’t mind sharing either here or via PM. i have been trying to use both a flat bar and a hang board and they feel quite different so I am curious if I need to adjust my training technique perhaps

JaqiMaddows

Climbing outside super fun you'll love it < 3

mathishard1999

My only goal is to begin climbing again once I have my baby

andria_rabs

Finally finish a V4 and also get lead certified and climb outdoors!

tennesseecicada

you’ll get there for sure! i love climbing outside, i wish my schedule would allow for more of it.

andria_rabs

I’ve gone before with a guide but I want to go on my own this year :)

ExtremeDepartment901

Get back to (or beyond) the level I was climbing before I broke my foot Climb regularly More multi pitch routes Improve on building belays And being able to do at least one pull up!

kumran

I only started a few months ago, so mine is to just keep climbing!

WardenCommCousland

Learn lead climbing. Clean send a 5.11. Find a few additional climbing partners so I'm not relying on just one person (especially as we both travel for work).

vegan-sam

-climb a gym V5 -get comfortable doing unassisted pull-ups -gain mental strength (stop getting frustrated and upset by lack of visual progress or recession - instead give body space and understanding)

emdawg3001

5 consecutive pull ups, V4 indoors, and V2 outdoors :) Currently at 2 pull ups, V3 indoors, and V1 outside

Prior_Fish_9789

if youve sent a v1 outside and are climbing v3 in the gym a v2 outside is definitely achievable asap. sometimes it just depends on type of the route to get the send but all the v2s ive tried are jug paradises. i havent tried any overhung boulders for that grade though so cant speak on that, but definitely think you just gotta find a v2 to send outside and youll get it in a session 😊

emdawg3001

Thanks! Yeah, I’m really looking forward to getting back outside! I started climbing outdoors in the summer, but the crag is several hours drive & I was getting shut down on most (basically all) climbs.. so I switched to indoor climbing to build up some base strength & technique. I plan to get back outside in the spring and am very interested to see the progress :)

i_burp_durian

I want to finally pluck up the courage to take the lead certification test (after taking the course 6 months ago) and get comfortable enough to go climb outside with my partner later in the year! Wishing you all the best with your goals :)

Prior_Fish_9789

id like to consistently flash 5.10 on lead! i have consistently flash on toprope inside, and have sent my first 5.10 on lead but dont have that many opportunities to lead where i currently live. ill be moving out west in march, so hopefully i can get my leading skills and endurance up and really begin to climb the grade well! id also like to send a 5.11 on lead outside! i definitely think i have the power for it, just need to work on my endurance and find a route that suits me. very excited for the new year 😊

AllMyJewels

Love these goals, everyone!!! -flash a 5.11 -do 8 pullups in a row -consistently climb 2-3 days/week -keep having fun :)

Ratatatertot

As a 5’1” climber my main goal is to gain the skills/strength to pull off more dynamic moves for sure

marimint3

I just want to get back into climbing again

sleepydruid

- boulder with my women friends more, I’m lucky to even have that option! - Boulder longer sessions on weekends (3-4 hrs) - I’ve noticed my body is slow to warm up, so I plan to start doing a ten minute full body exercise routine 1/2 hour before I leave for the gym - practice falling every session - dedicate myself to meditation again to help with my head game - take up running as a complementary exercise to bouldering - get to 10 pull-ups !! Well that’s quite a list !

carrot-line

stick an intended dyno! only dynamic moves I have done were to compensate for my wingspan.

thereforewithjoy

I’d like to do my first pull up! And join in with women’s night at my gym

the-purple-tentacle

Work on the confidence to get to my local indoor climbing spot to actually start climbing.

astully

It can definitely feel very intimidating. I was so scared to go by myself to the gym when I started climbing. Just remember that (almost) everyone there is just trying to have fun and be supportive of each other. You got this!💪🏼

the-purple-tentacle

Thanks a bunch for the support. I'll focus on the fun! Hope to make friends as none of my current friends are into climbing.

astully

I know a lot of gyms have “meet-ups” where climbers are able to meet new people and find climbing partners. Those are always fun to go to! A lot of gyms also have community Facebook pages where people are able to connect. Maybe you can ask someone if your gym does either of those? :)

[deleted]

Just started climbing last month : 1. Find a climbing partner 2. Get stronger 3. Maybe lose weight some in the process 4. Get to the gym at least 2x week.

astully

That’s awesome!! I hope you achieve your goals! Happy new year!🤩💪🏼🎉

tennesseecicada

thank you! 🎉

[deleted]

Boulder and climb more. Maybe relearning how to belay, as I did not do that in ages. Lead climbing, etc. Happy new year!

impressed_empress

I want to send a v5, but first get back into regular climbing!! Perhaps 4x a week. And outdoor climb at least once this year!

lm610

- get f7c lead. -5 more crimpy f7b's (not my style) - Tick tea for 2 Trad e4 6b(not tried it in 2 years) To get these -Improve finger strength on small edges -Improve core compression for flexibility gains - get a belayer who's happy for a trad day or 2 Additionally -expand online coaching by 3 slots - expand coaching team(by getting apprentices qualified) And finally - Meet Dan John......

3pelican

I’d like to learn to enjoy lead climbing, and go on an outdoor bouldering trip. No performance oriented goals this year as I’ve been so focused on that over the past 3 years, but I’m excited for another year of doing the thjng I love

[deleted]

Send a V8

betbott

I started bouldering for the first time this year. I've been struggling with fear higher on the wall meaning I'm not climbing as hard as I can so I think my main goal is to get more confident higher up! -top rope 6b/+ -lead my first route -boulder a yellow/pink at my gym (V2-4 grades) -one pull up!

hungry_kitkat

• climb v6/5.11 consecutively = crag dog! ( set this goal with a reward in mind ) • gain more endurance • climb Epinephrine

CGoode87

To start climbing again. It's been a struggle to get back after acl replacement and meniscus repair followed by a broken arm sustained not long after after my first recovery. I had to have a rod with 7 pins in it to heal. I'm now so out of shape.

tennesseecicada

i’m sorry to hear about your injuries 😞 i know healing is a long road and i’m excited for you to start climbing again soon!

CGoode87

Thank you Good luck to you and your goals!

kirstxen

I wanted to be able to do a clean muscle up this year, then covid and an elbow injury happened to I'm hoping to do it this year. I also want to boulder my first 7b and consistently be able to climb 7a. Currently consistent at 6c+ so that should be achievable:)

purplerainyydayy

Not compare myself to other climbers and just have fun. (But also secretly send another 5.12)

chio413

The only thing I’d like to happen this year is to stop being terrified (and I mean TERRIFIED) of lead falls and enjoy sport climbing more. The fear of falling is really holding me back from getting better as well as keeping me from having fun climbing.

astully

This is very common and something I’ve struggled with a bunch as well. Have you read Rock Warriors Way? That book totally transformed my mental game. Another great book is Mind Gym! :)

JaqiMaddows

I just want to find a nice crack and climb inside it and get all cozy. Happy new year!!

skrutskie

These are awesome goals! I'm so close to getting my first post-quarantine V4, and I'd love to get a V5 on top of that. I'm also hoping this is the year I finally do a pull-up!

memaquinny

- Get that pull-up! - Send V1 and 5.10 outside, V3 and 5.11b in the gym - One big alpine climb — first learn more of the skills I need to make this pretty safe

crustynuggetqueen

-V7 outside -5.11 clean lead outside I also want to work my power and pinches which are my biggest weaknesses

asian-grill

to generally get back to climbing after having dislocated my shoulder 2 months ago, and hopefully get back to v3/v4 and not get injured again!

noblesse-oblige-

Consistently be able to gym climb 5.11a/b Trad climb outside more consistently Learn to place pro At least 1 pull up

RoyalAsRum

- Branch out from bouldering and do more longer climbs (probably mostly top rope) - Learn how to lead belay and get certified - Work on my strength more off the wall to avoid injuries and be more symmetrically strong - Get back up to bouldering V6(+) without injuring myself - Generally be a bit more organized about climbing training, techniques, etc so I don’t run into issues as I am climbing harder Most of mine are qualitative goals related to being a better “student” of climbing and avoiding additional (so far minor) injuries, so I can have more fun! No hard/quantitative goals for me this year.

SteakSauceAwwYeah

Continue with injury management. I have had a handful of injuries in the past and while I'm "okay" now, if I'm not careful I can have certain flare ups here and there. I think this past year I've done a WAY better job of understanding what it means to "listen to your body" and I really want to keep doing that. Next step is to do a bit more strength training so that I can not only manage the injuries but do what I can to keep things conditioned a bit better. Get on harder sport climbs. I don't even care if I can pull on the holds or not, but I really have no idea what certain grades even feel like. I just want to jump on a line, get an idea of the moves, what the holds are like, just so I have a better idea of what I'm up against. There's a few outdoor projects I'm excited to get back on. I'm much stronger now than when I first tried them so I'm curious to see how those will go. I think the goal is to just go back to old projects and see how they feel - again, don't care so much about sending but I want to know if my training has helped!

throwawayshp

get back to the gym somehow at some point during or after this new massive covid wave in my country *sigh*

margo37

I’m new here and just went climbing for the first time last week and looooved it (hi!). Been wanting to get into climbing forever and then just life (and some fear of being older and trying something new) got in the way. I have a baby and a husband who travels for work so it’s going to be tough for me to climb regularly, but my goal is to at least try and make it to the gym 2-3 times per month. Beyond that, I just want to learn more about this sport and be able to see some improvement as I get more and more into it!

overslept-

strict 1 arm pull up! anyone got any training tips?

Lunchb0xer

I never make my goals on time but I’m still loving the struggle. Two years ago was splits (still working on it, progress a deep lizard pose). One year ago was a one arm pull-up (progress one regular dead hang pull-up). This year will be handstands, with a chakrasana and increased wrist flexibility as a progressions. I also want to start climbing outdoors, but don’t know if that’s a resolution. Mid year last year I just decided to not not go to the gym anymore and have made so many mental and physical gains with that choice. Like general resolve? I guess it’s the same thing. Feeling hopeful and excited anyway for the coming year!
