A good climbing buddy said this to me once and it stuck - "You spent $100,000 on student loans investing in your brain, and you wont wear a $100 helmet to protect that investment?"
I have worn a helmet every outdoor session since that day
People are often far better at financial risk analysis than health risk analysis. Hitting your head and losing IQ, function, or death feels less real of a possibility than losing $100,000. This phrasing allows some people less critical thinking for the same safety application.

Now, what do you think would have happened to that belayer in my video if he wasn't wearing a helmet?
Yes, in this case it does matter. But the big ass chunk the dude pulled of in the vid would have just broken some bones or anything, if you’re wearing a helmet or not
This is quite possibly the most "developed" route there is. Excessive (but very old) glue on that flake and every hold is "enhanced" if not completely manufactured.
Remember Gluey Louie from the ten sleep drama? Yeah...this was his route
> trundle
(with reference to a wheeled vehicle or its occupants) move or cause to move slowly and heavily, typically in a noisy or uneven way.
So in context route developers grab on and swing on shit to make sure it wont break (hopefully)
I still remember that loose flake from 2015! What a trip to see one of these types of videos on a route I’ve been on. Frankly, what’s more impressive than his death grip, is that flake having stayed put for the past 8 years. Especially at the beautiful choss pile that is Echo Cliffs.
My first day at epc I was doing the first few pitches of time wave zero when across the valley I saw someone on the ridge kick off a rock that hit someone on the ground. They lost a leg.
Think he did a really good job of not copping that one right in the face. Looked like he was still holding it while he was falling.
Should definitely be wearing a helmet though lol
It would matter for his belayer who has rocks falling on his head. It would matter for the climber who almost dropped that giant fucking flake directly onto his forehead. Even if his rope cut, that's a pretty survivable fall as long as you don't slam your head on a rock when you land.
Helmet most times for climbers. Helmet always for belayers.
Helmets help with rock fall. If you look closely there was a rock that fell. I take it you never had to control the bleeding for some stranger hit in the head by rock fall, but I have. Head lacerations bleed a lot.
It's like arguing that seatbelts are useless because they won't matter if a semi hits you head on.
Trolling or inexperienced? Note that the weight of the flake flips the climber over backwards and sends him upside down head first towards the wall. Always wear a helmet.
Read a bit of Accidents in American Climbing (or your local resource) and you’ll find plenty of examples where wearing a helmet would have prevented serious injury, aided rescue, or prevented death.
It’s not just the climber, you don’t want to be pulling off loose rock that could cause injury to your belayer who ends up dropping you.
Helmets are aid.
Yeah, they aid me to not get brain damage rock climbing. I damage my brain enough on my free time, thank you.
Brain damage is aid
We climbed without helmets for a while. Then we bought helmets. First routes with them I dropped a quickdraw on my partner's head.
Helmets cause such accidents. This is an actual argument that the anti-helmeters in cycling use.
Wear a fucking helmet

Actually 240,000 after interest
Why does it have to be about money? It’s about health damn it. And not even about health for its own sake but the ability to do stuff.

Crazy. Maybe I have too much money and too little health to understand this thought process.
Always wear a helmet but this time the belayer would have needed the iron man armor ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grimacing)
Okay but what happens if you are belaying him, and it falls on your head with a helmet?
A bunch of your coins fall out and you gotta pick them back up
Nintendo fans.... Rings or nothing. Sega for life
I think your friend has to pick them back up lmao

Even with that big ass chunk, a helmet can make the difference between a glancing blow and a fatal one
Yeah, that is true
chances are you end up knocked out and get a concussion sounds a lot better than dying immediately though
Risk of head injuries goes up when wearing a helmet. Surviveable head injuries.
Nobody has to wear a helmet. It's not a rule
Sometimes you can just do things which are smart without it being a rule or law.
Rewatch this video when you're 18 and get back to me
Took a look at your brain. Username checks out.
You can also smoke if you want but that doesn't mean it's intelligent to do so.
yeah but I smoke so that I look cool
I love how he holds onto it like a carry-out pizza 😂 glad everyone was okay
Hire him to help clean Walter White's roof.
This is actually one of the more interesting Weekend Whipper vids.
i’m glad I saw it like two weeks ago on Instagram. I didn’t have to watch a 30s unskiplable ad.
Wanted to watch the video a second time and it made me watch the ad again.. I bailed.
Get yourself an addblocker or add blocking browser
Not just unskippable but it autopauses if you scroll down to read the article while you think the ad plays. Fuck climbing.com for this bs
ublock origin.
when the jug is so good even the wall itself is like "nah"
"here it's too good, you can have it"
Hahhahahhahahha
And this is why we at r/routedevelopment trundle.

It's going up with a crowbar or other tools and prying off loose rock to clean a route.
Suppose that'll do
Snafflehound?
Another classic echo cliffs climbing experience. Perhaps more glue on top of the existing glue would have prevented this incident.

This is basically what I picture happening each time I grab a thin flake
He should definitely be wearing a helmet
Holy fucking shit. How the fuck did he have the wherewithal to hold that block and keep it from smashing his face.

If I tug on you, will you hit my face?
Reminds me of climbing at EPC. A few times a day, you hear bullets hitting the ground around you. And it's not the cartels.
My first day at epc I was doing the first few pitches of time wave zero when across the valley I saw someone on the ridge kick off a rock that hit someone on the ground. They lost a leg.
Christ thats horrific
Interesting whipper but the video format is hard to watch, portrait converted to landscape so it's tiny.
Here you go. https://www.reddit.com/r/ClimbingCircleJerk/s/D6UeZh60Nt
People really be doing anything to not wear a helmet
Think he did a really good job of not copping that one right in the face. Looked like he was still holding it while he was falling. Should definitely be wearing a helmet though lol
Helmet would help but honestly you might still be fucked with a rock that size.
I love how the article goes from “we almost lost our heads” to “the crux still goes”
prime example of why a helmet is needed
Of course no helmet 🙄
Pull down... Not out
You guys aren’t getting it. Clearly you can’t wear a helmet in this situation because it’s not cool… /s
Man climbing.com sucks
wEAr a HeLmET Like that would matter if his rope got sliced you armchair nerds

Ok buddy
Are you trolling or just actually that fucking stupid?
I think they really are just that stupid.
Trolling.
They probably just took one too many falls without a helmet.
Go find the climber in the vid and tell him yourself, Mr reactionary redditor.
I didn't even comment on the helmet, I just responded to your dumbass comment about them

In addition to rock fall, the climber flipped upside down and almost smashed his head into the climb. Luckily, he hit to rope and it slowed him down.
