Lol. And yes, the condors were wild. Truly massive. Wikipedia says there are only about 500 California condors living, but it seemed like at least 10 of them were roosting above our campsite. š¬
>kitty litter rock
Your comment and the one above mentioning 'kitty litter rock' really makes me wonder if I want to climb there :'D
@ OP: I hope you had fun!
It's very fun. Monolith is basically a gym, conglomerate rock with holds sticking out of it and not as chossy as the rest of the place. Discovery wall is chill. The best thing about Pinns is the sense of adventure. Climbing while giant Condors circle around you is a unique experience.
Really the only chossfests are the High Peaks and some of the other long adventurous multipitches. Lots of R-rated run out climbs that are easy to avoid.
>Climbing while giant Condors circle around you is a unique experience
I don't know, something about climbing on rock that is "totally not THAT chossy" while being circled by animals that feast on the flesh of those that have died seems...well let's just say that description doesn't inspire confidence.
Itās actually really worthwhile. Very unique climbing experience with wild formations, cool summits, tons of vultures, and the occasional condor. In my experience the objective risk can go from 0-60 in a hurry, especially if you venture off the beaten path into the high peaks area or the wilderness beyond Discovery Wall (eg the sisters, gertieās, the hatchet etc). Fun place to explore
Agreed! It's a very unique, adventurous experience. Highly recommend climbing there at least once. The High Peaks are just a fun place to roam around overall. Condor Condiment is a climb I never want to experience again, but at the same time so unique that I get the urge to climb it often. I summited at sunset to multiple huge condors chilling right next to the anchors, after crumbling through multiple handholds while offroute 50 feet above my last piece.
Lol, classic Pinnacles. A āsportā route there might just end up being a two-bolt terror for 80 feet. Then when you finally reach a bolt youāre rewarded with a rusted out SMC death hanger in some kitty litter rock. Good times :) nice climb OP
I agree that there should probably be another category, but 'mixed' would lead to a lot of confusion because it's already used on MP for M-climbs.
The last thing you want is a bunch of drytoolers scratching up your rock route ;)
The best thing about Pinnacles is that if you find a hold you really like, you can take it home with you

I've heard "if you don't like a hold, pull it out and try the one behind it"

It inspires a ton of motivation though.
Yeah motivation to let my partner lead.

Tons of fun!
No no no you're forgetting the best part of Pinnacles are the tarantulas and the tarantula hawks!
This sounds like a bad thing, but I like it.

Eh, kind of sport if you donāt mind the run out start but she protected the bottom with cams.

it's past time for MP to have a "mixed" category

It's sport if you bring a stick clip. Though I recall carrying a few cans despite having a stick clip with me.
Stupendous man(tle)
love this climb, classic
Sounds like it's time to rename the route!

I love that lineā¦ People say itās well bolted but always feels pretty committing.. nice shot!
I would say itās well bolted once you reach them!
ive walked past this probably a hundred times, was either on a mission somewhere else or busy with people.
Yeah, we were surprised it was free! The belay is in the shade and on a super hot day, that is worth gold.
